    I forgot something in the video.
    SNCF with Ouigo ES and its business model (Mix between TGV Inoui and Ouigo) is now in competition with the classic AVE and at the same time the AVLO. "Kill two birds with one stone!"
    In my opinion that's a great move from SNCF.

      There are too many grade crossings in the US, and too many car/train collisions at those crossings. Plus the freight lines own nearly all of the rail lines passenger trains currently use. In my area (suburban Chicago), they've been converting grade crossings to underpasses, not so much to facilitate passenger trains as freight travel. But those infrastructure improvements will hopefully jump-start the conversation about high-speed rail.

    The decision not to have a "high capacity" train is more to do with the product itself not being really "low-cost". In France, Ouigo has inOui services backing it up, so the more 'luxurious' product is with inOui while Ouigo goes with the lower class. And in order not to steal passengers from inOui, they make Ouigo non-attractive on purpose. But as there's no inOui backing them up in Spain, they've had to upgrade their product, but apparently the prices are the same. So that's good!

      Tbf, I also think it's to do with the base costs of it as well. I think OuiGo didn't want to risk failing in Spain AND spend a large amount doing so, so the upfront cost of refurbing all the trains into the "Higher Capacity" style would've likely been too much for them.

    Great video and interesting competition with a positive influence on price. But I don't think that complete liberalisation of train service should be the target. When looking back at last year, one can highly appreciate the state owned companies still being in service where all private companies on high speed rail reduced their schedule. In Germany, Flix train was even fully out of service due to "lack of demand". Therefore those operators should be seen complementary instead of seeing them as the future of train service.

    We did this trip in 1980 on our Interrail way to Morocco. The train was a Talgo, that was something special. At the station we ignored it at first, its low-slung carriages looked like a city metro. Then we noticed the locomotive at the front and got in just in time. These Tiltin' Talgos still are fascinating trains. A good concept to get more speed out of existing tracks.

      External companies operating for profit the Spanish most popular lines will disrupt their country railways in a way that the Spanish people could be out of pocket by the billions. Their system was designed so the profitable lines would subsidise the rest (Renfe), but now that option won't be available and I bet most of the country newly built HS lines won't be profitable. Yet they were built by Adif issuing public debt. I wish to be wrong on this, but I might not be.

    • @CityWhisperer
      @CityWhisperer 3 роки тому +5

      @@sapede (Un)fortunately, that’s not the case. And there’s a clear example to point it out. In 2013, Italy opened its high speed railways to competition, with a new company called NTV (Italo) entering service. 2 years before, in 2011, Trenitalia (the national operator) transported 25 million passengers across HS lines. In 2015 that figure had risen to 55 million, for a combined 64 million (9mill from NTV).
      So not only did passenger numbers more than double in just a few years, but the national operator doubled its passengers as well. Outcome? HS lines were popularised and average ticket prices dropped 40%.

    • @sapede
      @sapede 3 роки тому +2

      @@CityWhisperer That's really good. Unfortunately only applies to lines where there's population at destination, which might not necesarily be case with many of the Spanish lines. If only 900 people (of old age) live at the destination as it is for instance in Tardienta, you may double passengers to 3 everyday from the current average of 1.5 passengers/day (Should the low cost operator be willing to take a train there). You may attempt to estimate the real cost of that journey without any subsidies.

    • @CityWhisperer
      @CityWhisperer 3 роки тому +4

      @@sapede Yes, when high speed lines where opened, part of the project was to give "access" to high speed railways to underpopulated or rural areas. Not only to serve the town after which they are named, but the entire province.
      On another note, and unfortunately for your argument, long distance services don't recieve subsidies in Spain. AVE, Alvia, Trenhotel (now discontinued apparently) and similar services which serve long distance routes don't recieve public money, meaning that they either need to be profitable or their cost needs to be covered somehow. And in many cases, it's the money Renfe earns with AVE services (the only profitable one) that can be used to do that.

    Congrats for the great video Simply Railway! But I've to say a few things, just to make it clear enough.
    I've to say that it is quite shameful for SNCF that they're taking any type of pride of operating in Spain with no problems at all because of ADIF's clear and fair process of homologating and testing train precedure. Meanwhile they're puttling too many complicated rules and steps so that no other operators can run their trains in France. That's not fair. Neither Renfe or Trenitalia are baing able to pperate their trains on the LGV's because SNCF Réseau's questionable "policies". No one is capable to undersatand hoy a Frecciarrossa 1000 or an AVE S-100 is not allowed to operate on the LGV Est (specially the AVE S-100) when Alstom in this case has built and designed this train in a very simillar way as other TGV's that are actually able to run with any problems. Alstom has been working with Renfe for many years to make this train run anywhere in France and they can't figure out how to make the S-100 work on that particulate LGV, and this is well known by train enthusiasts that there must be something going on with SNCF's "corrupt" decisions, not with the rolling stock itself.
    If SNCF wants to take pride of how good their business is, and how good Ouigo and other products are, thery have to be fair and clear and allow other operators in the HST market in France so they can show that they're better or whatever they want. It's about all having the same chances and opportunities.
    Cheers!

      @@guillaumedu971 Well those trains have been allowed to run in certain parts of the French network for almost 10 years now. But somehow not in the LGV Est. Also, for the record SNCF has some trains that are older than the S-100 and they can run without any issues whatsoever. Also...how is it possible that the ETR-1000 and other models that are "not 30 years old like u say"(Bombardier Zefiro) had to wait almost 10 years to be able to run in France? And these two are just an example. We'll see what happens with the Talgo Avril. There is just one word to define SNCF Reseau's policies: "corrupt". The competition has begun; in first week Ouigo carried more average pepole with 5 services in each direction, when Renfe has more than double services in each direction. It's a change or it's curiosity for new things? We'll see.
    Capacity; a french Duplex in normal configuration (First or XL and second classes) can carry about 27-29% more pepole than a S-103 Velaro, the mainforce on Barcelona - Madrid HSL. In Renfe, only the new Avril's by Talgo will carry more pepole on a trainset than Velaros.
    Before Ouigo, train has catched a bit more than a half passengers in Barcelona - Madrid travel. Plane travel between the cities is still demanded, for connections and for some business (convention center is much closer to the airport than Puerta de Atocha station)
    The toll for using the infraestructure is calculated in a basis of the route, stations served and services offered. There is discussion for changing the toll schema, and one of the proposals take into account the capacity of the trains.
    Sorry if it has been bit long.

    Curious to see if all these competing railway companies do any more than just try to skim the market between a few of the largest cities. If it works out like the airline deregulation here, it will lead to cheaper fares on a few major routes but much less competition and higher prices on less-travelled routes.

      Meanwhile in Singapore our long-distance train station (Woodlands Train Checkpoint) is even further from downtown than our Changi Airport, & due to congestion at the neighbouring Woodlands Checkpoint, buses that usually serve the station sometimes skip it I heard (the nearest connecting MRT (subway/metro) station is ~1km away & ~50min ride from downtown). It's possible that our government would, by human nature, lack the incentive to improve this aspect of travel as it would facilitate more Singaporeans' travel to neighbouring Malaysia & spend there instead of locally, causing a outflow of money from our local economy.

    Such a kind of competition destroys railway business! Different operators on the same line make the timetable and the pricing complicate for customers and they make an appropriat use of infrastucture impossible. Customers exept their tickets and their travelcards to be valid on every train, so they have maximal flexibility. Indeed low prices are needed, but competition is not the way to go. Countries like Belgium or Switzerland, without competition and with one single ticketing system for all public transport operaors, have the highest railway ridership because of its simplicity and reliability. Meanwhile, people in UK startet avoiding trains as soon as they startet competition.

    • @CityWhisperer
