It's hard to win a Cup. The Tavares injury early didn't help, the Muzzin injury before game seven was more damaging. With all the hoopla around Carey price being the greatest goalie of our generation, he has exactly zero Stanley Cups. Think about that. Binnington has a Cup, Fleury has several to enjoy and another Finals for an expansion. Price....zero Cups.
For all the heat that Toronto is going to take, much of it deserved, they went for it and at least play a game that is built for a Finals. If not for the old, tired "Playoff Rules", the Habs couldn't slow down, interference, grab guys from behind (wth was that non-call?) etc. The game is boring, I don't care who you are a fan of. No way someone calls that "entertaining".
No wonder the NBA, NFL and MLB have such a broader global following.

I agree with you play evaluation. I would also rate Alexander Kerfoot, Alex Galchenyuk & Zach Bogosian as good/ok. I know Bogosian was on ice for a lot of goals against, but he had to play with the leaf's 6&7th best D-men, so I think that dragged him down.

I live a little ways north of Montreal. No matter how good it feels right now, the city of Toronto, and Leafs fans, deserves better. The Canadiens adjusted and changed their play during the series. Kudos to the coaching staff and veterans. The Leafs should have adjusted in their turn and didn't. I think a conclusion must be drawn.

    • @MG-im8ku
      @MG-im8ku 3 роки тому +5

You want to know why the Canadiens adjusted? Because the fans forced them too. Montreal fans will turn on the habs if they don't live up to their expectations. Something Leaf fans need to start doing. Selling out every game for a losing team, and selling some of the most merchandise in the league isn't helping the cause for Toronto. Fans need to stop supporting a losing team, and you will see the organization will turn things around to give them something to cheer for.

Reasons for loss are many but key reasons IMO:
    Coaching:
    - Thornton on PP with Matthews instead of Nylander(go figure)
    - Coach’s insistence not to adjust to Habs play
    - Habs played defensive in Game 7, containing and countering
    - Leafs refused to play shut down hockey in Game 5, 6 (don’t tell me that’s not leafs identity, well how far did that “identity” get us; hockey is hockey you make adjustments)
    Players
    - unfortunately, the players got paid big bucks way too soon and they feel like they’ve won the lottery and don’t have the incentive or hunger to win in playoffs because win or lose they (Marner + Matthews etc.) are getting paid high salaries. The money they make should be for Stanley cup winners.

@@MG-im8ku Obviously he needs a little more. Theres a long list of stanley cup champions who didn't achieve a lot before they were 23. Even some who did put up less goals than matthews has per game in the playoffs. Be patient and dont chase your superstars out of town. Its not easy to find them. Some franchises have never had someone as good as Matthews in their entire history.
It hurts to say this as Im an oilers fan, but the leafs are a good team, sometimes good teams lose in the playoffs, its a random sport sometimes and a 7 game series isnt very long. Come back again next year with a similar team and try again.

  • @johnnyfry2

I don't mind losing, I'm a Leafs fan, I'm used to it Habs are too, they have the second longest drought of the Original Six teams. Losing to such a boring, uninspiring team like the Habs. That's not bitterness, I watched them all year, they were even less exciting than the Flames games.
When Leafs lose to Boston, they lose to creativity and end to end battles and beauty. When they lose to the Habs they lose to 1995 hockey. It's the type of game that is ensured by "playoffs rules" and a prime reason Price has great playoff numbers (all defense, no offense) and zero Cups
It's all about winning a round, maybe two for the Habs, which is an odd way for an Original Six team to approach the sport. They themselves, in a 30 year drought.
Certain Leafs won't ever win a Cup, of that I am certain, but imagine sharing that same mark on your resume with the great Carey Price...
