Easy to be calm AF when you only get shots from the point for 40 minutes. And this video speaks of the other problem - they kept shooting right at the goalie. You’re meant to go around him.
For a guy who has never won the Cup and definitely won't do so in Montreal, he is quite calm. They really wasted his career. Reminds me of a certain goalie who just recently retired from the Rangers. So many great years, gone to waste. It's a shame really.
One reporter said he saw Price yawning between periods during the Gold medal game a few years ago. I knew when he started bouncing the puck around on his glove after a save in game 6 he was in the zone.
He’s been such a pro. Playing in that tumultuous market is probably the most difficult in the NHL. Always scrutinized and under the microscope, and he’s never faltered or wanted out. Amazing role model.

Well sir Dr. Hockey, you may just have to channel good old Dr. Frankenstein and delve into the dark arts to ever see the Maple Leafs win. Build an army of undead killer zombie giants, but the only reason they kill being they are so misunderstood. But the Toronto media and fans would rip them apart for their unenthusiastic post game interviews consisting of grunts and the rare moan of disgust. The fans calling out the team for literally not having a heart, and having it be literal this time and not just a figure of speech. But lets be real, as entertaining as that sounds for a Hollywood script, the real life outcome hasn't disappointed in pure drama of entertaining value. As long as its fun its all good. But if its becoming depressing then you have to take a step back and rethink your priorities. You sound like you have a good handle on yourself so salute to you. Yes I go overboard on how long my comments go, but I am on a PC with a keyboard so its easy!
You know how much the Toronto Maple Leafs have failed when TGH gets calmly fired up and actually says their epic choke job is worse than when the Boston Bruins blew that 3-0 lead against the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010 and the Vancouver Canucks choking their 3-1 series lead away against the Minnesota Wild in 2003
As a Sharks fan, I remember when the Kings came back from 3-0. I felt that kind of vibe for Toronto with this one. That Sharks team you could tell folded over when Vlasic went out. With no Tavares or Muzzin, the Leafs were done once Perry scored. They had given up.
@@dereksbooks I was comparing more to the idea that two regular season monsters lost a key player early in the series and it showed the true character of the team once that piece was gone. Vlasic for the Sharks, and I think Muzzin was a bigger loss than realized for Toronto.
"They're not built for the playoffs." That's the most damning thing you can say about a team with this kind of payroll. The Leafs are spending money to sell jerseys and tickets in October.
Probably would have won had Tavares not been injured. I didn't realize how flimsy the roster was under pressure. Had the Leafs winning this series but I have no qualms with seeing the the curse continue.
@@Radeo they played great, they just clearly don't know how to finish off a team fighting for it's life. whether that comes with growth or new personnel in that core is yet to be determined.

@@willymayeshayes7870 That's for damn sure. The Bruins fought back in the third period to tie it. Matthews and Marner are overpaid Prima Donna pussies.
Agreed. They're trying to be clinical, when they need to get dirty. Unfortunately, they don't really have the roster for that. Just not a team built for the playoffs.
Both teams were off. I think they were exhausted! I mean maybe I'm wrong but there's clearly a difference in energy of games 1-4 and 5-7. Not saying all teams are too tired in game 7 and have that excuse. Few guys stood out like Kerfoot and Nylander.

Sheldon Keef had the number one team in Canada in the OHL. In the playoffs I went to go watch my first game and it was against McDavid. It took me one period to say if the coach doesn’t adjust his game plan when McDavid is on the ice the Greyhounds are going to lose. He didn’t do anything and McDavid single handedly ate them up. Same here. Habs had a game plan while Keef was hoping his stars would win it on skill alone.
Jake Evans has truly become one of my favourite Habs this season. Gives his all on every shift. 7th-round pick who did his time in college hockey, in the AHL, on the fourth line, on the taxi squad, and he’s now jumped onto the Danault line and made it better, playing some of the most important minutes among the forwards. If Seattle doesn’t take Allen, I think there’s a very good chance they take Evans.
@@elliotfelx9270 I hope so, but I’m definitely not gonna make any assumptions on that front, not with a GM like Bergevin and the tough decisions he has to make in the next couple months
@@switchgear100 agreed, very Gally-esque but a bit bigger and better defensively. However, with the amount of UFAs that Montreal currently has, Bergevin has a looooott of work to do if he wants to protect Evans while meeting the exposure requirements
I'd take Evans several times over Allen... Dude's not even the best available goalie! (Although, come to think of it... Team needs more than one goalie so... yeah, would probably be hard choice.) PS: I started to like Evans in 2018 when he was cut only for being too young. Did awesome work with Bouchard I really thought he'd crack the lineup last year but hey... probably better late than never for this 7th rounder steal. (Might even be a better pick than Primeau!)
Sorry bud. The signs were on the wall. I thought MTL was done after game 4. Then I remembered the Leafs regular season. They lost to Vancouver after they had been off forever. One of their best opponents was Ottawa this year.
@@snipeshow___8925 Sharks have actually won multiple playoff series this decade. Buffalo has a series win more recently than Toronto. Leafs fans have absolutely no credibility to talk any sort of smack.
Spezza and Campbell are the only ones who aren't disgusting me right now. Even Nylander with all his goals only played hard when things were going well.
I’ve noticed in the past two elimination games for the Leafs that everytime they get a scoring chance they always seem to second guess themselves and completely crap the bed by doing that
you know, people talk about 'the curse'...and whether or not we believe that kind of thing...hockey players are ultra superstitious. Maybe THATS the area they need to fix because its clearly in their heads.
Outside of Nylander scoring when the game was essentially over, just one goal by JT in the last 3 deciding games (7 and 5). Even then they were behind and it wasn't a tying goal at that. They have offence but not a heavy style game.
During the regular season we thought the question as to whether the Leafs were truly a contender or just the best team in the North was going to be answered by "let's see what happens when they're matched up with the other division winners." They couldn't even get halfway through their own division. And as a Canes fan I am happy to see Eric Staal contributing to his team's success.

the guy does gallagher's job to go up close and personnal in front of the goalie all the time and always makes something interesting every game. Always creates something positive. Big respect for Perry's playstyle especially at his age. Guy could have called it quits and rest easy during the stressful covid year but he kept grinding. Hope they offer him an extra year so the young players learn through him even more.
Steve broke last game especially with his LFR video. This game on his "Watch leafs games with Steve Dangle" he just looked and souned sad and defeated. Guy is pretty much in an abusive relationship with the team at this point

@@markpolamalu being a Sabres fan is painful. But knowing I got 0 expectations for them anymore its not as painful anymore. As for the Leafs they got lot of talent on their roster. So yes I would definitely say being a fan of the Leafs are more painful than being a Sabres fan until Toronto can prove they can win in the playoffs
@@buffalofan7169 I see Granato as a good coach and if they commit to youth it will be painful but you will have growth. Leafs window rapidly closing and core is not working at $40M.

Just a friendly reminder that Amazon Prime has been following the Toronto Maple leafs behind the scenes all season. We will all get to watch this horror show in depth
That’s what the Leafs do. They even piss off non-fans of theirs. Everyone loves laughing at them but enough is enough at this point. It’s beyond ridiculous now.

Your exactly right, all these new stats are just a way to try to justify the money that some of these players make. Habs 10 mill$ man beat the leafs two 11 mill $ men. That’s the only stat you need to look at.
I didn't hear a single "Go, Leafs, Go" chant the entire game from the first crowd in over a year Every single player barring Spezza, Nylander (maybe), and Campbell should be absolutely embarrassed by that "performance" out on the ice. No heart. No effort. Marner and Matthews were almost invisible this entire series, the notable exception being when Marner held onto the puck way too long. Big changes need to be made in the off season. There is no excuse. Don't blame it on injuries, refs, or Price "stealing the series". There was simply no fight in the Leafs, and they deserve every bit of criticism they get and have gotten. Way to win it for JT, boys. That was a pathetic display
The problem is that they JUST GOT OUT OF A SCORCHED EARTH REBUILD What do they do? Do they trade everyone and never make the playoffs for the next 7 seasons just in hopes or do they lose every SINGLE round 1?
The crowd was only 550 people and they were healthcare workers chosen from a lottery, not paying fans. i bet half of them didn’t even watch a Leafs game this year
If Matthews was invisible you are blind, sorry but just because he didn’t score doesn’t mean he sucked. Unlike Marner who put on the saddest, most pathetic excuse of a performance SEVEN GAMES IN A ROW IVE EVER SEEN.
@Samuel Marchand , Foligno was injured... he came back and wasn't up to his normal self in the last two games... sometimes, it's better to let the injured player sit.
This is UA-cam at its very best. The Hockey Guy would never get a job with any print media; too precise, too detailed, no journalistic pedigree... Just the very best analysis available, anywhere. Shannon stands head and shoulders above any other hockey info sites. Thanks for your insightful work 🙏🏻
"I'm sure that in 'expected goals for' the Leafs won this series in 4 games," that's the kind of subtle everyday brilliance we get from THG. I guess all those pre-written articles about Matthews and Marner taking over the entire NHL playoffs in Round 2 can be saved for next year.
Exactly. These dummies making all the noise about how great Toronto is all live in Lala Land. They don't live in reality, like so many people do these days. They want things to be predictable, follow the rules. I say today these dumb dumbs start calling for changes to how the game is called in the playoffs so they can see their skilled players in the later rounds. They can't stand a game being won by hard work. They want to watch figure skating, not hockey.
“Expected goals” is one of the dumbest made up stats I’ve ever heard of. Who is the one person who watches each game and decides what is and is not an expected goal?
@@patrickbooth5091 Late reply, but I wanted the opportunity to also say how freaking dumb and made up those stats are. Not all advanced type stats are 100% garbage like "expected goals", although some others are ridiculous as well. It's like someone who is so geek about something that he will manufacture more of it. We also need to consider the fact that hockey is one of the less "stats heavy" team sport out there. It is VERY chaotic and unpredictable, which for me makes it the best! But others cannot accept that and make up a bunch of stupid stat categories. Never taking advanced stats into consideration isn't smart, but making it your religion is even dumber (or "Dumba" ;).
Shannon explaining this game in the beginning of the video is like if you made a PG version of UrinatingTree's "Congrats Leafs (2021)" Video, or Steve Dangle without the screaming.
the most effective Leafs line in the past 5 years has not been seen since they dumpted Babcock: Tavares, Marner, Hyman. Broken up with Hyman's injury but never to return.
I'd say this was worse tbh. At least the lightning had made it to the final four 3 of the 4 years prior and won a cup the year after. The maple leafs had been eliminated in the first rounds four years straight going into this series and they blew a 3-1 series lead to the canadiens of all teams.
@@nova7747 that is true too. That columbus team won 11 of 14 heading into the postseason. The canadiens were rather pedestrian this season. Honestly give that columbus team a few years and they'd probably win a cup.
I completely agree the scary thing if your a leafs fan is Tampa could feel confident keeping it all together due to pass success but what is this Leafs team going to do moving forward? Tons of questions
By the way a Francophone in the sixties when introducing the production of "A Tale of Two Cities," as an aside humorously commented: "No it's not about a hockey game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs!"
3 Changes I see the Leafs Franchise will make. * Keefe is gone, and will be replaced. * Matthews & Marner will not play on the same lineup as often as they have. * Leafs will go after a top end Defenseman. Why will Keefe get fired? Because after game 4, the Habs altered their game play and played a hard TRAP STYLE GAME. The Leafs had 3 games to alter their own game play to counter this style of play and they did not. That's on the head coach, on top of not separating Matthews & Marner after ZERO Production game after game after game. Who Agrees?
they may not fire any staff unless the big boys want them gone, I think they will trade one of the millionaires away if they can find another team that wants that person, Toronto will have to eat some of the players salary to make it happen.

Just the other day I was saying if my Knights lost game seven we may need to rebuild despite being a good team with good players who make the playoffs every year. Now I’m convinced that’s the Leafs… they have some amazing talent but clearly what they’re doing doesn’t work in the playoffs, might be time to trade off a few huge assets and acquire new guys to change the team makeup and chemistry. Canada destroyed my bracket this year, thanks Edmonton and Toronto. 😡
@@vooswing , I didn't expect Edmonton to be swept... however, they screwed up one game where they blew their lead in the third period to lose in OT... the rest of the games were winnable... but the Jet Goalie was just better/luckier.
Man, what a great first round. My Avs swept, Oilers got swept, and Leafs blew a 3-1 lead. If Vegas had lost that game 7 then it truly would have been perfect.
I'M DONE. I have watched almost every Leafs game for about 6 years now but I didn't watch game 6 or 7. I knew exactly what was going to happen. I'm sick of watching an entire regular season, poring over the minutiae from each game and marveling about how good the team looks only for it to inevitably fall apart in round 1. I'm not watching another Leafs game until game 1 of round 2, whenever the hell that will be. I can't do it anymore. If the Leafs made at least round two this year I was going to buy a new Leafs jersey of whoever I thought played best. The thought of wearing any Leafs jersey except Campbell right now makes me want to puke. I'm going to go buy a Luka Doncic jersey instead to go with my Kyle Lowry jersey, at least those guys consistently act like they give a shit.
Been here since 93, my fandom is over. Tossed the jerseys and cancelled NHL. Deal with this like other r toxic relationships the best way to deal with it is to cut it out. They’re not getting one more minute of my time.
So predictable - I stopped watching this team in 2006 - after watching every game since 1968 - because I couldn’t take it anymore... I started watching again in 2016 - I think it’s time to take another sabbatical - because they are just freaking terrible and so disappointing...
Im also done, the same garbage year after year. How can a team show up to game 7 and put next to no effort in. Bunch of gutless spineless turds. If I was one of the 550 at the game I would have thrown my free jersey on the ice.
Bringing in veterans can work if they're the right ones. Staal and Perry were perfect fits for the system Montreal is running. They can play heavy and still show the hands and touch to make plays when needed. The veterans Toronto brought in don't have that complete game anymore and it showed. Montreal's depth dominated this series.
Very educational plus I appreciate your impartial take on Habs games. Ducharme deserves kudos because he came in the middle of a slump with an insane schedule.
I will say this about Montreal. They don't play a flasy game or a overly exciting game. But they play hard and they play their system well. Plus Carey Price in the playoffs is something else.
@@darthvader3742 they remind me a little of the 2019 blues, no major offensive pieces, just gusto and trust in the system. I hope they can make a run, it'd be a blast to see. Congrats habs.
The Avalanche for years were were built the same way as Leafs for a number of years. They have had the big line of MacKinnon, Landeskog, and Rantanen for awhile now. The difference is, Sakic managed it it right and didn't spend all the way to the cap. As a result, he had the cap room to be able to put complementary pieces around the big line. Dubas and the Leafs spent all of their cap space on 4 guys and as a result, he hasn't been able to bring in a Donskoi or a Burakovsky, or a Brandon Saad, because he doesn't have the cap room.
While what you say is true, the Duchene trade was a steal that you can't ask other teams to replicate. Sam Girard signing for 5 years 5 million, steal again. Something I do agree with is that Sakic did an amazing job on depth. Burakovsky flourished into a true 2nd line player. Oh yeah, the Ryan Graves trade=steal again.
@@ThankYouScienc3 Skill wins regular seasons, Heart wins the playoffs. People said the Leafs aren’t build for the playoffs, and there might be some truth to that.
If they had lost and had actually tried I would be more understanding and sympathetic. They just looked like they didn't care and by the time they actually looked like they cared it was much too late. Changes will and need to be made.
When I was in elementary school in the early 1990s a kid wore a T-shirt that read: "This is your brain (Habs logo); this is your brain on drugs (Leafs logo)." Despite the Canadians not winning a Stanley Cup since then, that shirt saying still holds true even in the early 2020s.
I feel for Leaf fans. It feels like there is something very broken with the chemistry and build of this Leaf team. Reminds me of the years my Avs had Duchene, O'Reilly, Landy, Statsny, ect. All great players but the combination was just not right to win in the playoffs. Change can be good and hopefully they make changes and can help find the right combination of players to move forward.
Being a hardcore fan of a team ends in apathy or disappointment most every year. Only one team wins it all. But some years are particularly heartbreaking. You build, you compete, and you improve to the top of the playoff bracket, only to lose three games straight. Just like Edmonton, Toronto has world class talent that can’t win a playoff series. It’s one thing to lose due to defensive lapses, it’s another to have premier offensive weapons that can’t put it in the net
Congrats to the Habs and their fans for the heart they showed in every game after being down 3-1 in the series. Leafs had it but didn't want it enough. Congrats and good luck the rest of the way.

@@6Snaus except that Kings team was a sleeping giant. No disrespect to the Habs, but they aren't the Kings!
@@dereksbooks Correct, these Habs are better. But the best is the Jets.

"They're not built for the playoffs."
That's the most damning thing you can say about a team with this kind of payroll. The Leafs are spending money to sell jerseys and tickets in October.

Choking - it's what they always do in a game 7.

Hes 100% getting protected

I'd take Evans several times over Allen... Dude's not even the best available goalie!
(Although, come to think of it... Team needs more than one goalie so... yeah, would probably be hard choice.)
PS: I started to like Evans in 2018 when he was cut only for being too young. Did awesome work with Bouchard I really thought he'd crack the lineup last year but hey... probably better late than never for this 7th rounder steal. (Might even be a better pick than Primeau!)

I was rooting for Spezza too... as an Ottawa Fan. He had an amazing season this year... I hope he continues to play well for many years to come.
Bruins experienced the same thing in 2014, so did the Rangers before Kreider "solved" the issue.
Outside of Nylander scoring when the game was essentially over, just one goal by JT in the last 3 deciding games (7 and 5). Even then they were behind and it wasn't a tying goal at that.
They have offence but not a heavy style game.
They are always looking for the fancy pass instead of shooting it
@@LeSyd1984 I guess the Leafs were scared of Price? Not surprising. Any good goalie instills fear into the best attackers.

Which fanbase is more delusional about their playoff chances Edmonton or Toronto?
The answer: Yes
I mean if your gonna look at extremes then sure
I was surprised about Edmonton. The Leafs, not so much
I’m a Leafs fan that figured we’d win a round or two but that’s it
Guys like Matthews and Marner are no match against the sheer talent of Joel Armia
Hahaha right now this statement is so true!! Yesssir
This makes you wonder why guys like danault aren’t payed 10 mil
@@stephentyler4352 Its so bad
Come playoff time, guys like armia become a helluva lot more valuable than in the regular season. Leafs GM might wanna take some notes.
@@ThankYouScienc3 Skill wins regular seasons, Heart wins the playoffs.
People said the Leafs aren’t build for the playoffs, and there might be some truth to that.
Brutal game by the Leafs. Habs played well and deserved the W.
If they had lost and had actually tried I would be more understanding and sympathetic. They just looked like they didn't care and by the time they actually looked like they cared it was much too late. Changes will and need to be made.
When I was in elementary school in the early 1990s a kid wore a T-shirt that read:
"This is your brain (Habs logo); this is your brain on drugs (Leafs logo)."
Despite the Canadians not winning a Stanley Cup since then, that shirt saying still holds true even in the early 2020s.
I really like the Perry - Staal - Armia line as our 4th line they have been playing great hockey
Don't let the Leaf's blowing a 3-1 series lead distract you from the fact that the Titanic STILL hit the iceberg
It's been 109 years and I still get surprised every time I see that godforsaken chunk of ice emerge from the depths.
They Have Even Have made at Hollywood Movies of The TITANIC !
I really like the video when the Hockey Guy is fired up!!!
Hey I just found your channel recently, love the breakdowns.
Congrats to the Habs and their fans for the heart they showed in every game after being down 3-1 in the series. Leafs had it but didn't want it enough. Congrats and good luck the rest of the way.
Your username is very fitting for the Leafs
WE DID IT! WE ACTUALLY DID IT! HABS FANS REJOICE!
From a Sens fan, thank you very much. Price was a mad beast. He deserved a shutout.
All fans that aren’t Leafs fans are rejoicing haha
