    Porvoo , i have been walking that road you are seeing that Cathedral , it's only about 40min drive from Helsinki , went to Porvoo often in summer time to having coffee near the water /river , and swimming on the place Sondby in Porvoo ..far from center but amazing place & beach ..thank you Matt ,, great video , Love the soundrack music also in your all videos ❤

      Thank you Mariam , glad you like the music - I often spend quite a bit of time trying to find the right track. There's a lot of buses that go to Porvoo as well, I seem to remember it being pretty inexpensive which is just how I like it 😂. Unfortunately I didn't leave the centre but the parts I did see were beautiful. It was an enjoyable day and like you said, handy being so close to Helsinki!

      Thanks, yes I do try to find the most interesting places and unique hotels. It's important to get a balance between the touristy landmarks and quiet untouched spots I always think. Have a great day.

    Good stuff! Perhaps you noticed, both Helsinki and Porvoo have street signs in two languages, Finnish and Swedish, both official languages. It just can be confusing the same spot has two addresses :)

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  3 роки тому +2

      That's interesting, I remember hearing something like that on the Helsinki tour. I think I may have recorded a short clip about it but didn't end up using it for one reason or another. Yes I bet that can get confusing, you've almost got to remember two place names for every location! Thanks for the information, enceladus.

    Red house = low class such as common workers
    Yellow house = middle class like office workers and teachers
    White house = upper class like factory owners and nobility
    Im not sure how far back these kind of "colour codes" go but at least late 19th century. In the modern country side you can still see almost every farm building painted red (except the main building is often yellow or white). I dont think its not a class thing anymore but its kind of intresting that it is still being used.
    Side note. Near the town of Pori, there is a town called Noormarkku. There is a an old and beautiful mill area called Noormarkun Ruukki (or Ahlströmin Ruukki).

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the information, Kalle. That makes sense, I guess the identification of classes was much more standard back then. Not an exact rule as you say but a helpful indicator I suppose. Thanks for the information about Noormarkku, I could find the town but not the mill - is it close to the river? Thanks for watching, I very much enjoyed my trip to Finland.

    Great footage, thank you! I hope you visited a cafe to try out the local delicacy, Runeberg torte before you left! I am a Finn living in Sweden and could almost kill for one!

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching, I did visit a local cafe (Cafe Fanny) and although I did take a few clips of my breakfast there I didn't include it in the final video. I didn't try a Runeberg torte but having just looked it up I think I may have missed one there - it looks delicious! Hope Sweden is treating you well, I visited Stockholm a few years ago but would love to get out into the Swedish countryside on a future trip one day. Thanks for watching.

    I've been wondering for months now when you've shot your footage as face masks have never been a feature and I just saw the 2019 flower bed at the start of this video! Very fortunate that you were able to do this much travelling before the world shut down! I really enjoyed the drone shots and the transitions again, and really good song choice to accompany it! I very much approve of those trails, so, so pretty! I was pre-empting those pits as being bomb craters from the WW2 so very surprised to hear they were storage cellars - never would have guessed that one correctly!

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  3 роки тому

      Ha yes I often wonder what would have happened to all this footage had lockdown not of happened. During 2018 and 2019 I managed to visit 17 countries - I was pretty much travelling during all of my free time! Finland was one of the last trips I took of 2019 (although before Albania and Malta) and I'm very pleased looking back that I pushed it so hard knowing what I know now about 2020 and 2021. Crazy times! I'm almost at the end of the pre-pandemic videos now so some more recent UK based videos coming up shortly. Pleased you like to drone shots and transitions, it seemed really quiet throughout the town and so I was able to do plenty of flying without bothering anyone. Really enjoyed the short trail walks and the river - the castle was a good find too! As much as I love Helsinki it was nice to be out of the big city for the day - glad I took the chance.
