the dog one makes me weirdly happy. not only does it mean that humans have an urge to pet even the image of a dog, but also it makes the dog look like it has a heavenly light on it, and the way people touched it makes it look like the light also reflects off of surrounding objects.
The reason people pet the dog and the falling woman is because it brings luck (sort of like kissing the Irish stone) not because they like doggies unfortunately
@@lottiewright7674 Traditionally it's a luck ritual, but realistically most people who aren't local don't actually believe in that and wanted to pet the dog statue regardless. This dog wasn't even part of the original story of St John the staues depict, just an artistic addition, so people did initially started touching it just because it's a dog
I believe it was actually some art students who went there and polished it so it looked like people had been touching it. After that people started touching it for good luck
@@lottiewright7674 I kind of agree, but it depends on the statue/figure? Like, I'd rub a Buddha belly for luck (I'm not Asian, though, but there's something tactile about models of chubby figures) but if I saw a dog statue, I'd pet it literally just because it's a dog, same as if there was a statue people could sit on the back of - regardless of the lore or superstitions that might be attached to that statue, you can bet people will sit on it, even if it's not 'allowed'.
The painting varnish hurts me, because people are way too scared to restore the most famous beautiful paintings, which are hiding behind yellowed varnish and dirt Edit: screaming, crying, it covers up a lot of detail, even if u like the different pallet it makes the actual painting harder to see! Edit 2: ua-cam.com/video/DV0mctgFPBs/v-deo.html this ytber shows the contrast greatly
The other bad thing is people will look at these paintings and think these historical figures were swarthy therefore running to the bank saying that they were of color...
All it takes is one mistake and you not only destroyed a priceless piece of human culture, you get to be the person infamous for destroying a priceless piece of human culture. I understand the hesitation
The grilled cheese painting is super impressive. Drawing food and making it look delicious is a very difficult art form and is an excellent practice for painting anything you want
I know that people can damage works of art by handling them, and I always respect any signs in the area around an artwork, but it is by itself a beautiful emotional statement that people love their dogs, and I think that there are two pieces of art there: the dog created by the original artist, and the dog lovingly made golden by thousands of people who touched him.
I don’t follow. At first i thought you were talking about a codpiece due to the emoji, but there isn’t one. I guess his hand is golden, too, but I’m pretty sure that isn’t the joke.
Honestly the fact that the dog is "glowing" in an otherwise quite dull and dark-looking place is very realistic. A happy dog lights up your world! Even in painting form.
Theres a statue like that dog in Washington DC. Its a Statue of Einstein and everytime someone has a test, (Or are a tourist wanting in on the sweet nose action) they rub his nose, essentially polishing it.
The last one is in Prague! There's a statue on the Charles bridge of the priest John of Nepomuk, and under it are two plaques. One has the one with the knight and the dog. The second plaque that has a depiction of the John of Nepomuk being tossed off the Charles bridge for not telling the king all the stuff the queen told him in confession, and the saying is that if you touch the priest on the plaque you will have good luck and it will ensure your return to Prague someday. But apparently a lot of people got confused and thought it was the plaque with the dog, and so now there are big lines in front of both plaques of people trying to make wishes. Obviously I did both because who doesn't want to pet the dog 😂 (Of course I was there at the beginning of 2020 and was supposed to stay for the whole year before COVID hit, so take the good luck bit with a grain of salt I guess- or maybe you could say it ensured I would leave Prague in order to return to it 😂)
I talked to a museum curator once about people touching dog statues and whatnot and he literally said "we have a rule to try and not put them in reach of anyone because everyone just instinctually tries to pet the dog and it will eventually destroy the statue" He said they have a similar problem with statues that have horses (like the common "guy on the back of a horse" statues) but it's not as bad.
