The difference in population in Ireland between 1841 and today has more to do with the Great Famine than it does with the population concentrating around Dublin and other city centers. These two maps also show how much worse the famine was felt in western provinces--about 20-25% of the population died or left the country around that time and many more continued to leave long afterwards.

Is the potato famine a factor?
@@jnj1308 It's by far the biggest factor.
People already living in Ireland can't "emigrate" to Dublin
About the Portugal Internet thing, I cannot say for sure why is that, but I know some things that may have affected it. Portugal is quite mountainous, specialy in the north-east. In those areas populations are mostly really small villages only conected by mountain roads (my mom is from one of those, that's why I know this). This situation slowed the development of those areas in every aspect, and some are still quite below the development average of the rest of the country. Plus, those are, again, mountain villages. Reception is low and the infrastructure expensive just to reach a small amount of people. It's way better compared to 30-40 years ago, when my mom lived there, but it may likely the reason why so many people haven't used the internet yet there.
Portugal also scores quite low across the board compared to Western Europe, to the point where it's a meme that they always have similar numbers to Eastern European countries on these kind of maps.
Because our population is more likely old

3:45 with the map of Ireland there was also a genocide which took place because of the English which is why the population in more rural areas went down by so much
Wasn't it a famine rather than a genocide?
@@jishanborno no as the English forced us to give them all our food except potatoes and than did not help us afterwards and 1 million people died and another million left and our population has never recovered since
@@Mazaa24 Calling a genocide is quite extreme and against the views of almost all historians (including most Irish historians). It was a famine and yes, the British government (who ruled Ireland at the time) could have done a lot more, but to call it a genocide is going very far and frankly deminishes the term genocide. Yes the Whigs (a right wing liberal party that existed back in the 19th century) ended all ongoing efforts the previous British government had put in place to eliviate the famine, and it's quite clear that they would have never done so if it happened in England (the Whigs were openly super racist against the Irish), but lack of intervention is not even remotely the same thing as genocide. Genocide assumes active intervention with the specific attempt to eradicate an ethnic or cultural group. The British just deemed the Irish to not be worthy government support, which, don't get me wrong, is REALLY BAD, but it's not genocide. You can't commit genocide by doing nothing, and that is basically what the British did. It's not like they actively banned all trade with the outside world to starve them out or anything. They retracted a disaster relieve fund the previous government put in effect. The famine wasn't specifically an Irish thing either, Ireland was just hit really hard, since potatoes were extremely popular in Ireland as a crop. But the whole of Europe got hit, and is one of the many reason several European governments collapsed (the revolutions of 1848 were party in response to the famine and poverty caused by potato blight). So you can't really say that a million people were killed by the British, THAT would have been genocide, but that didn't happen. A million people died because of a famine (and millions more left the country, most to the US, which is why it has such a significant diaspora), and no one intervened to stop it. Eventhough the British, ruling over Ireland at the time, kind of had the moral obligation to do so. But that doesn't immediately make it a genocide. Calling it that massively inflates the term. You can never do what is arguably the worst crime in existence by doing nothing. They did not force to give them all the other types of food, I don't know where you've read that, but that is just not true. Yes, Ireland did have a net trade deficit of food at the time, but that is because some farmers chose to sell their crops in the much richer England (which also had food shortages, like the rest of Europe, just not as big as in Ireland). But that wasn't a government mandate, it just was legal to sell it outside of Ireland. That's not at all the same as genocide though. Which, again, would require active intervention.
@@jaspermooren5883At least not Stalin bad who very intentionally starved hundreds of thousands if not millions of poles and Ukrainians
@@jishanborno well it was a manufactured famine, the english converted most of the farmable land in ireland into beef farms for britain which made the irish reliant on potatos because they were resilient and easy to grow, then a disease made potato crops fail on mass (which happened in lots of parts of europe, it just effected ireland because of how dependant they were on the crop), and during the famine beef was still being shipped over to britain
That map at the end with all the animals on it is amazing and now I really want it.

Jack, the Irish population decrease was because of the famine..
So urbanization alone doesn't explain the changing population distribution of Ireland. The Irish population peaked in 1845, was absolutely devastated by the great famine, and has not recovered since. The peak population was 8.5 million and they currently stand at 5.2 million.
That sure was a British interpretation of why Irelands population declined

You are incorrect about the Irish population. The main reason why all those areas were severely depopulated is because of migration due to the Irish Potato Famine. In fact, Ireland has still not recovered to it's population from before the famine.

The fact that you didn't mention Czechia when talking about beer is sad.
Just clarifying for australia... anything a few hours inland, and no longer highly populated or cleared, is generally considered outback, doesn't have to be desert
we often call it out-bush when there is still scrubland, so that's most of rural qld, nsw, and vic, but will call it outback too.
Infact, moreso than desert, outback is often used referring to northern areas so north qld, the northern territory, across to northern nsw, some of which is heavily forested, and heavily croc, snake and spider infested
then the desert itself, the great australian desert, is made up of a bunch of smaller deserts (Great Sandy, Great Victoria, Tanami, Gibson, Simpson, etc) between kind of mt isa all the way across to broome, down south to just inland north east of perth, and then cutting back across south australia to almost the lake eyre (pronounced 'air', also called Kati-thanda) basin, which is inland and stretches from vic up to mid-southwest qld, and is itself sometimes considered desert since much of it is salt plains out of flood
