Is it just me or is most of these switch games lately dropping the ball in the performance department? Look at games like the witcher 3 and Skyrim then there's no excuse for these little games to perform this way.
I really enjoyed Stardew valley in March 2020 and later played My time at Portia. From what I can see now I will more likely return to this two then buy new Story of Seasons

The visuals to me are right in a sweet spot. Not quite as cute as friends of mineral town but not overly realistic.

Have it on pre-order already, glad that most of the negatives you mentioned are the sort of things that can be patched out down the line, which isn't so bad on a game that you can basically play as long as you like.

No offense, but unless there is a pre-order bonus you just can’t live without or it’s a limited edition, there is 0 reason to pre-order a game. It’s always a better idea to wait for reviews to see if it’s worth buying full price.

This will be first ever story of seasons game and although it's got some things that needs improving, I'm really excited about relaxing and enjoying this charming game. Really reminds me of My Time At Portia which is the only farming game I've ever played. Can't wait!

maybe im just being hopeful, but i hope the developers are watching reviews like this (especially when they are the ones giving review codes/copy) and then patch the problems and improve on the critique. XSEED imo are more credible and respectable than Natsume, so lets just hope for the best.

I'm so glad someone else finally said they miss the character portraits. They were always gorgeous and gave all the NPCs so much more personality...
The 3D modeled graphics need a major overhaul too I think. They were fine for the 3DS but there hasn't been much improvement for the Switch.
I did already buy this one, but I'm not sure if I'll be playing it any time soon. I've always loved this series but I think they still have a lot of work to do.

I heard that there are patches coming and hopefully that will fix some of the game's issues..but it doesn't matter to me I'm still getting this game..I have SoS Friends of Mineral Town and I'm still enjoying that one..I am so excited for this game 😁
Love the series but was really bummed to see no character portraits. That combined with the poor performance means I'll skip this for now.

things that kill this game for me:
-All the unnecessary makers
-Boring characters with barely any interesting dialogue
-No portraits
-The terrible character designs of the new sprites
why didn't they keep the artstyle of the doraemon game, so beautiful.
Performance looks like a deal breaker for me. If it gets fixed looks like a decent game. Thanks for the thorough review!

When there are already amazing games like Stardew, Littlewood, Graveyard Keeper, and Sakuna, it's disappointing to see where the series has gone. I'm worried for Rune Factory 5 with how this one turned out.
Wishlist game at least, hopefully it shows up on an All Patched Up soon with positive changes.
from what i've seen, XSEED social account is engaging with its player. they probably will listen if a lot of people complain/critique their IPs. and well the game just released this day, lets just hope they are planning to patch the problems.
@@immanuelandreaspanda It's been out in Japan for awhile now though with minimal changes unfortunately. But maybe at least, I generally love Xseed games. Wish they would bring back Ragnarok again, the vita game was a lot of fun.
@@xelthos2051 Yeah I've been watching the game being played by Japanese streamers for a couple days now and it looks pretty good. I suppose when starting out the performance would be pretty smooth but over time as your farm gets larger, it could chug I suppose.

I think the Doraemon watercolor style suited this type of game better. I'm interested in all the activities except from farming 😅

I'm trying this now, harvest moon a wonderful life was my favourite game cube game and I literally played it on and off for 15 years, never felt the need to buy an upgraded console. Anyhow now with the switch having it on a free game trial decided to give it a shot. I DO like it, been playing all day ( I have a day off which is awesome lol) however I hate the animal crossing like camera angle, you can have first person pov when taking photos so I don't see why this isn't a constant thing. I love the fishing and farming, I find the villagers far more enjoyable to talk to than in animal crossing and the main reason for my comparison is that dreadful fixed camera I just mentioned and the copy cat museum this game has provided which is no where near as well done as ACs museum. I feel this is far more playable and my kind of game, however because its just not as pleasant looking as a wonderful life I won't be buying it unless it falls to under £15 which may seem a bit over cheap for what it is. I do feel it is a very good playable game it's just not improved enough over 20 years like many other games have so I'll be giving it a pass.

Damn I been playing stardew a lot. I heard the reason why the guy even made stardew was because he wanted to make it how Harvest Moon was SUPPOSED to be. Now this game came out. If get this I'll feel like I'll be playing stardew but with upgraded graphics ugh 😆
Seems like I would rather pick up the Mineral Town Remake over this, when it does on sale of course.
The only true deal breakers for me was the lack of character development and the fact that monster hunter was a few days away. One of the devs said that the relationships aren't a main focus and I disagree. They are equally as important as the farming and the economy of this series and there needs to be a balance between the three

I’m rlly enjoying the gameplay so far but the dialogue is a marked downgrade from previous games in the series and it rlly is a bummer that portraits aren’t used- you are unable to see the characters you are talking to wayyy too often.

It's a bit disappointing, especially seeing how much work XSEED put in to making the English release better than the Japanese one. (For example, early Japanese reviews complained about how "same-y" all the language was for things, and I know XSEED has put out in their fun facts how much extra flavor text they added; I've not seen a single English review criticize the flavor text.)
Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until they patch things up. Littlewood is just too good right now to drop to a different farming sim that has more issues.
I find Stardew Valley and Rune Factory 4 to be the best farm/life sim games on any console.
In my opinion they totally went in the wrong path with this way, hope they'll orient themselves more at the roots in the next one. Was quite disappointed since it felt like a downgrade for me in comparison to the older games.
I really really hope, that the "release now, fix later" policy will be gone soon, because I think almost every series has lost its charm due to pre release and promises of future updates. Don't want to play a half finished game, just give me a full game, even if I have to wait 5 more years.

Yeah the promised updates are nice, but they've turned this game into Genshin Impact with all of these updates and patches. Hopefully we won't have to wait until patch 1.09 in September for this game to be worth $50.

Thanks so much for this. I was in two minds as to whether I’d like this, or not. I love games like ACNH and My Time at Portia but SoSFoMT didn’t quite grab me.
I'm going to hold off on this, and see what Rune Factory 5 or other potential games like it have to offer. I was interested, but watching other people's playthroughs and seeing the frame rate has me not as interested. Shame, too, cause I likely would have gotten it day 1 otherwise.

I have a feeling the portraits will be added and the framerate capped at 30fps soon. Marvelous is a very good developer, I think they just have their assets spread thin and with RF 5 releasing in May. Strangely because it's such a chill game the frame rate doesn't bother me as much as the lack of portraits.
I'm having a lot of fun with it and really look forward to the improvements bound to come. PS, these games don't go on sale very often ;)

For me the best installment in the series was Trio of Towns. The performance, sense of progression, and characters were so good.
Disappointed about how Olive Town seems to have turned out. Maybe they can do updates to fix theses issues. If they do its a solid buy for me.
Does someone know if they fixed the performance issues already? Game is on sale now and might consider it if it's fixed. Would you also prefer FoMT instead?

Just picked up Rune Factory 4 recently.
Really wanted to like Stardew but just wasn’t into the whole farming and running out of time so quickly.
Was really looking forward to seeing what yee guys thought of this one as graphically it didn’t impress me either from what I had seen.

I've only played a couple hours this morning I'll play more later but I have seen a lot of people talking about the Performance and it is a bummer, but I will mention that the Devs have stated they are working on it and hopefully that means we get a patch soon!
This reminds me of my favorite HM. Being able to rebuild the town however you want.... Plus it has some of the rune factory improvements. May definitely have to get this at some point

I’m so torn on this one. I love the IDEA of farm sims, but I often feel that they stretch the experience by making core gameplay mechanics tedious, shallow and less fun than they could be. I basically want ACNH WITHOUT tool durability and WITH a farming mechanic. This seems like a cash grab. Maybe less so than the new Harvest Moon game, but still.
My first experience with this type of game was Stardew Valley which I loved. I'm not really sure that this one is calling out to me. I find the 3d graphics slightly ugly - the character models are giving me mobile game vibes.
I love Olive Town. It's one big area so there's no annoying shift between areas like in FoMT and best of all everyone is easy to find because you can look at your map and see where they are
I'm surprised you didn't mention the $20 DLC that is available day one, so you have to dish out $70 just to have the complete game. I'm usually fine with DLC but when it is sold alongside a brand new game, it rubs me the wrong way as it could have been in the game to start with. It feels like a cashgrab rather than a thoughtful extension.
You're right about the impact of character portraits, and I hope they include them in the next installment. I'll be skipping this one
The 20 dlc is getting released over the next five months. Only the clothes of past mc is out during release
@@christopherjansevanrensbur9983 I know what you mean, but for me, it's offputting. Most SoS fans are going to buy the DLC, which means spending more than you would on any new AAA title. I don't think the value is there personally.
Animal Crossing released in an unfinished state like this game, but the updates were free so it was more acceptable. They could have charged for DLC and they chose not to, which is more consumer-friendly.
All that being said, I hope others have fun with the game
Normally this would be an instant day 1 buy for me as I love games like this, but I bought Story of Seasons:Friends of Mineral Town on my Switch some months ago and found it a real drag to play. Guess I've been spoiled by Stardew, so unfortunately I'll pass on this or wait for a deep sale.
I recently got into stardew valley like obsessed with it. So I found harvest moon and I accidentally bought “harvest moon light of hope” thinking it was a new harvest moon only to find out it’s not the real harvest moon anymore and “story of seasons” is the new harvest moon so I just picked up this game. So much better has a animal crossingish vibe the harvest moon game is like a cheap mobile game.
Rune factory is my absolute favorite but animal parade is my 2nd favorite.
Well that looks pretty good. I'll likely pick it up physically sometime soon. Yonder is the only game in this genre I've played and I quite enjoyed that title, but once the end credits rolled I didn't stick around much longer
Feel like this would be a great game for me to just chill out with, but find the price a bit high and not sure I need another one of these type games.

Play Stardew since you have it. It's basically a Harvest Moon/SoS but better.
One thing I really disliked was the moving of tools in and out of your item bag, why not just have a second bar???
Yeah, that was odd. I just moved them out and kept them out so it wasn't a big deal but it's a strange choice.
The performance is definitely a disappointment- I had assumed this would be very much in line with Mineral Town, just with more added to it. Here’s hoping they patch the frame rate issues.

Wow, this game really needs a framerate cap. That should be easy to fix in a patch, but considering it's already overlooked for launch I wouldn't hold my breath.
Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning is probably my favorite farm-sim game...either that, or one of the Farming Simulator games lol.
I wonder if the Coronavirus is one of the reasons why the performance of the game couldn't be sorted out in time of the release.
Interested in giving this series a shot. I've played these kinds of farming sims and building games before. Terraria, Animal Crossing, Minecraft, Conan Exiles (even though that last one is that's more of a survival game), etc so I'm quite familiar with them.
For anyone who knows more about this series than me, I was wondering if I should start with this one or some of the older games in the series?
Meh, I think I'll wait for a good sale on this one. I'm pretty entertained by littlewood and miitopia + MH stories is coming out? Yeah I think I'll wait. Not to mention coral island is looking infinitely better.
I live in fear of the cows from this game. There is something so unsettling about their design in this art style e_e
I've heard too many bad things about this game and when even the developers are saying they'll try to fix it I don't really want to spend my hard earned cash. I hope Story of Seasons next entry will try a little harder. If they have to copy another modern game I'd love to see them put more in depth farm mechanics like how deep Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin rice growing mechanics are.
....man what a let down.... if the performance wasn't such ass I would've considered the game but that price is not worth 20 FPS. Can they stop fucking up Harvest Moon for FIVE SECONDS!? I see nice QoL add ins but not enough to stream line the bulk of the early game OR past the early game if I'm gonna be honest.
The buildings looks too small and the world feels empty, the rest is good

Excellent review thank you very much for the well educated information. I'm wondering how this game's going to do obviously the loyal fans were going to pick this up without any hesitation. But people that have invested their time in animal crossing I think may stay there. It's just nice to have both games out there I applaud Nintendo. Let the farming and fun begin.

Personally, I would pick Mineral Town as I prefer the simplicity and more focussed gameplay but I could see a lot of people preferring Olive Town as it expands the formula. Glen

Town’s small too, and there’s not detail on characters like animated face reactions or portraits. Just seems inferior to games before it like animal parade and stardew valley. for the price, it’s ridiculous.
I think Pioneers of Olive Town fell into the "we'll finish it in updates" trap so many games have fallen into these days. Disappointing.

Personally, I prefer the simplicity of Mineral Town over this one plus it performs a lot better but, to be fair, this has introduced a lot more mechanics that some people will really like. Glen
FOMT, is graphically pleasing but a very basic game. its too simple and easy, wasn't pleased at all but understand its more for nostalgia. maybe you'll like it but I stopped playing after a week

I will be skipping this game. I had it preordered but then I learned how many features were cut out from previous games.
I wish you spoke on the fact that there are no 3D models for items and everything is changed into a plain present box when gifting.
All the food is the same 3D model so even if you order omelets your char eats fried fish.
Animal care has been simplified to the point where all you do is click A repeatedly.
No more Animal and Crop Festivals. Festivals that are present are bland eg Egg Festival
I think you should have spoken about these features because they are part of the gameplay loop that you praised.
There is still more than enough to the gameplay to warrant it getting a decent score. Some of the festivals are bland, some are better. The other points you make all relate to visuals and, without the video being about 20 mins long, I needed to pick the parts for the visuals section that I had the biggest problem with and that was most certainly performance.
