Hey Sumogurinet: This is the SECOND time your video has really, really helped me. I want to give thanks, I’ve been very frustrated with the motor. I’m a sailor, but my boat is docked on a tidal river with a very stiff current. I haven’t been able to use my boat!
Here’s what I had been missing, that your video showed me: first, I had not noticed the thick plastic spacer between carb and intake manifold (mine dropped into bottom of cowling, I finally found it) and without it, your throttle setting is wrong. Second, ’til now, I never realized there was a little valve body that comes out after the main jet. A bit of tapping and it fell right out. In fact, this may show varnishing, the fact that it wouldn’t freely fall out.
So… thanks much! You have probably made a real difference in my summer.

Thanks for the video. Small learning curve makes it quite easy after the first attempt. Had a gummed up carb on a 6hp Tohatsu, despite draining the bowl over winter. Cleaned the main jet with a steel wire strand, which allowed it to start. But could not idle. As there is no jet to clean, but a circuit, I left it soaking in White Spirit. Morning after resulted in a telltale mucus residue at the bottom of the container. Voilá, runs like new.

This worked perfectly for my problem - engine was revving with the choke on but not when i throttled up. Did a carb clean and worked like a charm. Highly recommend this video.

You’re a lifesaver! Mercury 6hp 4str 2018 did not want to run anymore. Single injector in the center, brass screw has minute opening,
Cleaned it with brake cleaner (not the carburetor). Thanks a lot.

Thanks for that, I have two 6 hp Mariners, I took no 1 to a Mariner dealer having got some water in the fuel. Charged me 2 Hours Labour at £40 per hour plus £25 for ultrasonic cleaning. Total with vat £140' Watched your video , bought ultrasonic cleaner in Lidls for £10 . Did second engine half an hour , Great result Thanks so much.

I can confirm that this is identical to a 2005 Merc 4 stroke 5 hp. I could not even get it to fire once until I performed this 'cleaning' procedure and now it's starting like new. Thanks very much for the video, I would not of tried it myself without the clear procedure in this video.

My Nissan outboard was jacked until I followed your very well done video. Now my outboard is running like a champ. Thanks for taking the time to present and post your knowledge. Cheers!

Your video gave me the courage to give this a try. Thanks. In my case, the problem was idling required a half-choke. Cleaning with your method didn't fix it. Ultimately, it required removal of the brass plug by drilling, removal of the idle mix screw, and rodding/soaking/spraying until that passage was cleaned. Now it works like a charm. Another thing to note is that there's also float needle valve in the bowl that at times needs to be removed and cleaned too. Symptoms there are no gas or flooding with gas.

Great video! Just another tip for other viewers: you can turn the black arms at the top of the carb to open up the choke valve (the black disc) and the throttle valve (the metallic disc) up a bit more so you can spray the inside of the carb a lot better!

Excellent video . . . .I have a 2006 ^ HP Merc and have had nothing but carb problems after the first 1 1/2 years. I use it on a 20 foot sailboat weighing almost 3000 pounds and I just replaced the gas motor with an electric Torqeedo which works fine. I do want to get the Merc running and this vid is a big help! Thanks, Gil

On my 3.5 hp unit from 2016, it has a small rubber stopper next to the central jet, it will pop out if you spray it with carburetor cleaner as it expands too. Be sure to not lose it, as it will mess up the whole carb will run badly. Also, good to rinse out your entire line to make sure there is not debris in it, and check the fuel filter is not gunked up too.

I think the outboard is pretty durable as long as you winterize the motor correctly and change oil based on the owners manual. I did not remove gasoline from the motor when i left a long time. Thanks!

GREAT video. Can I just suggest one thing: when you spray any cleaner, use eye protection!!!!!!!!! Some carbs are complex, and the cleaner may come back at your face through a second passage. This can happen very, very easily.

Are there air/fuel mixtures that must be set with the screws on the outside of the carb? Or are you supposed to screw them all the way in?

you are missing 1 gasket on the back of the carb, the plastic spacer is sandwiched between two gaskets, besides that the video was perfect

Does that motor have a spark advance that rotates under the flywheel ? I want a 6 hp that I can make the throttle operate with a servo = Fly by wire if you will . Thanks Tim

My problem is exactly what you don’t show. These carb are having the shaft of the float very stiff to take out. Contrary to others who just slide freely. I broke one branch holding the shaft once and have to buy another carb... very expensive here in the caraïbes. . And now the same problem... scare to scrap another carb. I can see the float’s jet is stock.

Thanks for the video!! Question, When I took apart the carburator I noticed that the choke plate was stuck open and it was hard to even move it, is that normal? Would a choke plate wide open prevent my outboard not to start?

    Hi there,
Great Video. Just bought a 5hp Mercury ,exactly the same, its a 99 model. It was not started for 3-4 years. Cleaned the fuel filter, Cleaned spark plug and fresh fuel. Started on Second pull. Ran totally ok. Warmed up with some choke. When I increased throttle, just died from idle. Powered up,pulling choke out a bit. So I'm going to do the rebuilt, hopefully this is the problem. Or could it be not a fouled up carb ? What do you think. Also Is there no need to replace gaskets ? Appreciate a reply thanks mate.

Here's what they don't tell you.....BUT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!..Remove the gasket between the carb portions BEFORE using carb cleaner.....or it will make the rubber gasket stretch and it will not fit! However.....if you are faced with this problem......place the stretched-out gasket in the freezer overnight....it will contract almost back to it's original shape and size, and it will work for you. How do I know.......been there, done that!!!

I believe it is your clogged fuel tube. You can use a carb clearer and blow the tube. Otherwise, it is the fuel pump. You can clean the fuel pump. Thanks.

I wish you would answer from comments. I took it apart and it was dead easy, looked pretty clean for a 99, not really any gunk sitting in the bottom. What l was wondering, l have the exact carb and the long brass screw, with holes both ends, mine was a bit shorter, it had a hole in the end and just from the end,had 3 or 4 smaller holes in the shaft of the screw. The end where you put the flat head screw driver on did not seem to have a hole running through. Or l did not have a pin thin enough to go through. Anyone can tell me if the is a hole there??

  • @ExamineLife4

I've got fuel coming out of the hole on the top of it and can't figure out why or what to call it. Does anyone know?

    • @GrandOldMan

Maybe the float is broken or stuck

    • @wowguy3562
      @wowguy3562 4 роки тому

its your float level, adjust the float until the needle barely comes into contact with the carb needle when turned upside down by bending the metal tabs carefully, you basically want the float parallel with the carb or approx 10 - 11 mm or 3/8 inch to top of float from carb base, hope this helps

The 2 brands use the same carb, but the carbs differ with the power rating. The 6hp carb has a bigger venturi.

Old gas will gunk up your carb with varnish.. ethanol added to gas makes it worse.. Try using a fuel additive to your gas like Sta-bil Marine... cheap insurance IMHO. Also if you have access to a good Ultra sonic cleaner that will clean out those passages where you can't spray into. I cleaned up a really gunky hood fan with hot water and TSP in the ultra sonic cleaner.. wow.. your carb did not look bad at all.. just a clogged passage I bet.

    • @mikem4432

it is exactly the same... it is the same motor, they put a smaller opening to the carborator to limit the HP. A 2.5 can be converted up to 5.5 hp with a kit.
