I’m a lucky guy. I’ve been listening to James Taylor sing for 50 years. I’ve attended numerous live concerts and watched many on UA-cam and DVD. I’ve learned from his guitar lessons. And now I get to look over his shoulder at his creative process. This is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you.
....me also, I feel blessed! ..."That's Why I'm Here" and "Country Road" stand out in my mind and of course "Fire and Rain" "Sweet Baby James!" Glad one of my sister's older, always appreciated James Taylor even her children heard her singing his songs in the car! Her 5boys and 1Daughter heard what I heard beautiful melodies and gorgeous lyrics ...so many great songs! ☀️🌾🙏🏼🏞️
Gifted. Sir James multiplied his a hundred fold. 🎁 I was in a school fair in 1971 when I first heard You got a friend. One a kind. Thank you Mr. Walking 🚶🏻♂️ Man. Thank you for your kindness and music 🍏
I just came back from a concert with he + Jackson Browne, over this last weekend. . He sounds phenomenal still Been a fan for 50.years . ..I am still in this magical weekend. ..❤
Never say never...there are more melodies within you that you need to share with us. Thank you for revealing your inner self through these wonderful sessions. Love hearing about your creative processes. 💕
I find this so interesting, to be able to have this kind of insight to one of the great American songwriter, singer. To see the whole thought process, the day to day ramblings, to driving the car and jotting stuff down. Thank You for letting "us" fans feel as if we are there with you. Just really appreciate you even wanting to do this type of thing. Thanks to all that put this film together, and to James for wanting to. 🙏
It is Toronto, that I'm going to, some how down the line. And I don't care, if I don't dare, to find a better rhyme. But to get there, during this Covid scare, will take me quite some time. So in the meanwhile, I'll put on JT, to listen to and smile. I know, don't quit my day job... but then, I'm just two years shy of James' and already retired.
This mini-documentary captures the multi-layered process of creativity on the genius level. I have enormous respect for anyone who cares this much about taking the time to make something beautiful.
Dear James, it's wonderful to hear your voice, to see you with your band and learn about your process of creating lyrics and music. Thank you for all and everything, and most of all for all your beautiful songs. Charlie DeVey
Please come to Texas I am 51 & been enjoying your music since the 70s. My late father worked for WEA for 25 years and although i didn’t realize it then the your music was a type of bonding, it spoke to my spirit and to thus day im realizing just how much your music means to me. Its spiritual. I would love to see you in person and take my son as i know it would be an experience of a lifetime for both of us and most importantly inspire him to pursue his musical might. I know he doesn’t realize it but i hear a lot of your theory in his personal writings. If only he knew how talented he really is. So maybe sharing an experience of seeing you in person would special in more ways than 1. PLEASE COME TO TEXAS, thanks again for everything James, love you sir
So? Did he come somewhere near enough for you to see him? If not, (in person), I hope you have enjoyed the many concerts available on this channel for free, like me!🤩
Despite the acclaim and brilliance of James' early work and steady stream of consistent remarkable lyrics and melodies throughout his career the last two studio albums of original work are both significant masterpieces. Forever hopeful we'll be enjoying more James Taylor originals for years to come.
I have never met you Mr. Taylor, but you are as much a part of my life as my heart . Thank you for the wonderful music. I know in some cases the joy we hear came at personal sacrifice to you. Though I may never understand it all, I am aware and very appreciative. Keep on strumming!!!
Sister, Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said, “ I’m just a little pencil in God’s hands”. I am reminded of her words each time I write or paint or engage in any creative behavior. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful music... surely gifts from the Father.
Thanks for sharing your creative process and the powerful elements of the community within which you give life to the poetry of a meaningful life. Your journey of discovery gives us so much to appreciate.
Oh this was so very enjoyable. I've been wanting to see something like this since forever, James. I'm gonna love this song. You just can't make a bad song.
How fortunate we all are to have the opportunity to watch and listen to these insights of a musical genius at work. His creative processes and how he gathers everything, every part of a song, and blends it all together with his band of brilliant dedicated musicians. Blessed. Much thanks JT for sharing :)
This made my day... Thank you for this awesomeness! I love this record and this was an amazing peek behind the curtain. JT will always be #1 for me :-)
Querido James que hermoso estudio tenes!! Y tan bello lugar!! Todo armoniza con tu bella vos y hermosas canciones!! Gracias por todo lo que nos das!!❤❤❤
THIS is what we (ardent, life-long, JT-addicted) fans love to see. The process. The inside stories. The workflow and organic process. It's like being there, and we watch wishing we were just one of the musicians in The Barn during the creating process. Please keep these documentaries coming. I know they're a lot of work to make, but they are JUST the kind of viewing that makes this Covid-restricted existence bearable! And lovely to hear the perspective from your wonderful wife in her third-person account of how you arrive at the lyrics (and melodies) of your beautiful songs. And thank you for giving us the ability to offer up our humble efforts in your #JTJamesTaylorChallenge series. We somehow feel that by offering up our cover versions, we enter into your world in just a very small way.
Very cool to see the space where you colab with the crew, James! It’s a beautiful place. Who wouldn’t want to get into the wood and nature, smell the pure oxygen, and revel in beautiful melodies. I see why TheBarn is so precious. The juices (or sap has) have freedom to flow there. May you be blessed well into the future with creativity!
Dear James, you never cease to amaze us in your musical journey. This new project shows incredible resilience and passion.Ten songs in ten days means literally"the wind is at your back". The comraderie and mutual respect make for the right chemistry.Your life is blessed with the right people and family. The woodsy homey feeling makes me think of a Quebec painter who drew inspiration from the fresh smell of newly chopped firewood. The composition and writing process are profound and inspiring. May this new music be enormously successful for you , my friend.Blessings always, Simone
🥀Amazing interview with James Taylor he's so creative with a twist of sence of humor. He's serious with his music he puts his all into every note of a song. I can feel his words that's a true artist for you. God Bless you all🥀✌🥀
This video was beautifully filmed! Just wonderful! 👏 👏Hearing the band’s insight was great, and getting to hear Kim speak about the process James goes through when writing was brilliant! 👏👏 Looking forward to Part 2! Thank you! 🙏
James, this was just wonderful. I have enjoyed your music for so many years, decades really. It's just lovely to go along with you as you walk us through your process. When this "album" (I'm old school) came out, I bought it right away and I have enjoyed it ever since. You are the best James, and I wish you health and joy for many years to come.
This is such a treasure to watch. It's especially interesting, and an important lesson for songwriters who want to do this their whole life. James was doing this since around 16, and I think he's 76 now: that's 60 years of songwriting. As he points out here, this stuff just flows out at 20-25, especially once you become so successful that you have no day-job except writing and playing music. The mind works differently then, and after Fire and Rain made James a huge name, I don't know if he thought about songwriting with the care & reflection that he does here. Mud Slide Slim, Walking Man, One Man Dog... all those albums, all those songs, just kept flowing out so rapidly that he just had to get out of the way and let them happen. And as James ages and that natural flow fades (it does for all of us), what strikes me is just how well he's adapted to age as both a singer and songwriter. For me his voice sounds better now than it did on the Sweet Baby James album: he has more mastery of it, maybe less intuitively, but with the kind of control that comes from experience. He's become, pound for pound, a superior guitar player than he was as a young man--and this at an age when most of the more flamboyant virtuosos have started to slow down. Joe Satriani is 68, Eric Johnson is 69, and the thing they do is not a thing they'll be able to do forever. LIke Olympic athletes who compete in figure skating or rhythmic gymnastics, they have chosen a worthy and beautiful art form, but one that doesn't play well with crossing into middle age. James, like an Olympic athlete who competes in equestrian sports, or archery, James has a much longer horizon to pursue his mastery, and you can hear how he's made the most of it. Songwriting, though... that's the real challenge. The world is full of people whose response to aging is to push too hard to hang onto the way they used to do things. James pursues his songwriting with such gentleness, and such comfort, that what comes to him now comes so beautifully that it seems effortless even when it isn't. The songs that came down like lightning at 20 now come out like butterflies coaxed out of a cocoon, and I think there's a valuable lesson in that for any of us who intend (and hope) to survive into our "retirement" age, and to spend those years still doing something worthy. It's a pleasure to see James still doing what makes him happy, and what makes us all happy, long after so many others have set it aside.
This is amazing! I love hearing and seeing into the world of the wonderful Mr. James Taylor. I am a long time fan, clear back from high school, and now into my 60’s. I think I’ve seen his concerts about 10 times; not quite a dozen! But that is at the very least, my goal. Thank you so much for an interesting peek into your creative process!
Bought my first James Taylor album in high school when I was working at a local drug store soda fountain making 1.65 per hour. Got it at the Music Nook in Milford and went home and played it on my little record player a million times. Finally saw him in concert at the Wang in college! Sweetest voice I ever heard and beautiful guy too!
Cannot state enough how much I enjoyed this excursion into his studio and songwriting process, James Taylor an American icon in every sense of the word always hospitable in his interviews with honesty and integrity, how can we not as fans or otherwise be pleased with him as an artist worthy of praise. Thank you James; as a fan since your earliest days you continue to inspire with just who you are.
...you guide the song so we'll! Hitting those notes ...holding them as long as you want, ..you can tell the appreciate the song Lovely is watch you all play! wow a gift
Listening to the song I heard the word "samba" which immediately brought "Only a Dream in Rio" song back to my mind and your amazingly emotional performance in that show here in Rio! That was one unforgetable moment, no doubt about it. Thank you, James, for your decision to get back on the road again. Never yield 😉
I hope to see/hear him live one more time. I live in a nearby place to where he resides. I've loved his music since I was still wet behind the ears. Now in my 60's love him even more. I get to walk down roads that have so many memories that warm me, make my heart cry for so many loves and so many lives that have moved on. Thank you JT.
Thank you James! This was an emotional experience. I'm a musician who really never found his group. I've done many but alas. Deep down I'd love to write but lack the confidence. I just love playing your songs. Thank you! 🙏🏼❤️
Had tickets for Tacoma but Covid intervened. Was ok with the first several reschedule dates but not sure I’ll still be around for this last one in October. I’m sure going to try. I love hearing you play and I love hearing your voice, even when speaking. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us. ♥️
We are all fortunate to have lived in the decades when James has been making music [first concert I ever attended (50 years ago maybe? Carole King opened, Boston Garden] -- life has been so much richer with his music and there were times when songs (Enough to Be On Your Way) have literally held me up at painful points of transition -- some songwriters are historical figures who contribute indefinitely to the ongoing lives of the human species -- people will be listening to James' music in 2 or 300 years (as we do people like Stephen Foster) . . .
You’re an amazing soul, all the waiting, for your Masterpieces, all well the wait, Sir. Percolation just like coffee, it’s the sound, the smell, the fire of the rain as that coffee brews...it’s just all a part of it and as said before well worth the wait of your tunes, your notes and your Lyrical and edits coming to fruition. Grateful and thankful for your puzzles 🧩 of creation James of the gems;). Take your time in peace and smoothie views bro. I’m super grateful for all you do and your team. Thank you, kindly. #buckwheat me likey;)
I've seen JT 11 times, though it's been nearly two decades since the final tour I saw... He and Jackson Browne are SUPPOSED to be playing together in the Tacoma Dome in Western Washington, Jackson got Covid so they've delayed the show, but I don't know that the Covid shutdowns will allow them to perform live... Even if it's allowed, the show is sold out... I am very sad, as I've never seen Jackson Browne but love his music, and would love to hear James and Jackson do a short set together... How much longer will these people be doing live shows? Feels like I'm missing my last chance to see these two masters together! Bless you James, like The Beatles and The Band, your music is the soundtrack of my life!
Loved seeing bits of the recording process. Every song seems to be complex so it’s no easy feat to accomplish without cooperation and everyone’s involvement knowing their own parts so well. Writing lyrics, revising as the melody comes in..or at the same time..whatever works. Just saying I admire the process that turns an idea into an incredible song. 😱
This is awesome! Just the sort of discussion of the actual music I am always wanting to see. I've gotten used to only being able to find tidbits here and there in interviews which are mostly about other stuff.
...I was looking for the song that popped up in my feed yesterday it was James Taylor singing about "The Distance"? It was a new song for me or it's a new song of his it was really cool! Made me think of my Mom and I miss her
Definitely enjoyed this. Glad to see it's only part 1 :) Waiting for the sequel to Break Shot. Would love to see you perform something locally with the Berkshires coming back to life this year.
#jamestaylor, I loved all your music, James. I learned how too differentiates music from nuisance songs hahaa by the I'm cris palarca. And I love your music from the first time I've heard during 70's and now on my 50's.
Well I guess for a recording artist that’s about as ideal a setup as you can get. A dreamy home recording studio in the woods, your family a few feet away, THAT band coming in to record your music in what seems to be a very friendly atmosphere, all the time in the world, and on top of that your very own snow removal equipment. Pretty sweet!
Before this world is such a great album . I like the JT original songs much more than the covers that JT does most of the time . Thanks for any music you do , please go away to Montana and write some new and wonderful songs .
James, how many of those _precious notebooks_ do you have and how are they stored/organized? As a sometimes- writer, the way you use them is very intriquing to me. *I get the tape recorder/napkin stuff, though.* We be crazy sometimes. 😂😂
I found myself today, painfully forcing out those useless words. It happens. Writer's block. Nothing works. Then, I confide in my long-time friend (to me) James, to give me some consoling wisdom. Write something - anything. Get something to work temporarily. It will fix itself later. TNX JT.
So it's more work than we untalented people may think it would be? I tried songwriting 50 years ago and gave up because the songs didn't just plop out. Funny! But you know what? I once knew a guy who was leaving a song with every footstep. But he is still not James.
NICE.VWJHATVIS YOUR MUSE? My cancbe anything at all for poetry...I lovexwarching the creative process....and understand...my dreams mynprayerscreate my most productive muse...

Made me think of my Mom and I miss her
So interesting to see how song writers work on their craft.
James your one of the few folks from the 60's that survived drug addition and then created your dream. Well done you.
Definitely enjoyed this. Glad to see it's only part 1 :) Waiting for the sequel to Break Shot. Would love to see you perform something locally with the Berkshires coming back to life this year.
All the necessary elements to produce wonderful music. Once again I thank you, master. ❤️
I'm liking the facial hair, Mr. Taylor!
#jamestaylor, I loved all your music, James. I learned how too differentiates music from nuisance songs hahaa by the I'm cris palarca. And I love your music from the first time I've heard during 70's and now on my 50's.
Thank 💜 You LOVE
Well I guess for a recording artist that’s about as ideal a setup as you can get. A dreamy home recording studio in the woods, your family a few feet away, THAT band coming in to record your music in what seems to be a very friendly atmosphere, all the time in the world, and on top of that your very own snow removal equipment. Pretty sweet!
Come to Florida please!!! South Florida 🌴
This album is sooo underrated.
Ah, that was the one!
James maybe you should write a song about your life journey from start to I'm finish.Love you my friend.
Would have loved to be a fly on the wall at those sessions!
👍😎❤🖖
Love brother
I found myself today, painfully forcing out those useless words. It happens. Writer's block. Nothing works. Then, I confide in my long-time friend (to me) James, to give me some consoling wisdom. Write something - anything. Get something to work temporarily. It will fix itself later. TNX JT.
Btw...love the the mustache and goatee.
Great! Is there a part 2?
There are two more parts.
@@jamestaylor thanks. When will they be available?
The next two Fridays.
@@jamestaylor thank you looking forward!
James is NOT a narcist!
Another suggestion (All souls gentle are my closest nabors ) Blessed Be from Francis Connors.
James, Whats the Name of the instrumental at 7:03, it sounds Beautiful
You tinker and noodle an infinite beauty. #SoulFood
In Gadd we trust 🙏😂
What will we hear in after time? Listen up!
"Long lanky Yankee boy". James is basically describing himself.
My husband uses Alexa Dot to record his ideas 💡 through out his sleep schedule. Most of it is garbled.
😀👍I don't write, but i undestund.(music is universale). Don't lauhg please. 😀
Great
So it's more work than we untalented people may think it would be? I tried songwriting 50 years ago and gave up because the songs didn't just plop out. Funny!
But you know what? I once knew a guy who was leaving a song with every footstep. But he is still not James.
Lol...neat process. All my stuff in writing is done by myself...
8:16 Esperanto :-)
Steve Gadd looks a lot like Billy Joel?
