FINALLY! THE SERVICE TRUCK I NEED AND CAN AFFORD!

- THE ONLY WAY I COULD AFFORD THIS SERVICE TRUCK IS IF IT HAD SOMETHING MAJOR WRONG WITH IT......AND IT CERTAINLY DOES! I SHOW WHAT THE TRUCK IS A BRIEF LOOK AT THE PROBLEM. ONCE THINGS SLOW DOWN, I WILL TAKE IT IN THE SHOP AND GET WORKING ON IT.
Now I know who to call when I'm broke down! JC and his portable toolbox!
you drive fords with cummins engines......you will never need to make that call!
Portable toolbox lol.
where's part 2 of this truck
Looks like a nice setup for sure!
Glad you finally found one! It would be a perfect truck with a 6.7 Cummins and a Allison much like were optional in the 650-750 trucks. Which im sure you have plenty of for parts 😎 congratulations man.
Can’t wait to see this awesome project
That service body on an awd S1900 or 4700 series IH with a mechanical DT466 would be about the best all around service truck I could dream of.
JC sounds like you’ve got a good candidate for a 12valve Cummins swap.
That would be a major downgrade!
That would be a major and good and better upgrade
John Mclaurin Mclaurin I’ve see several people on UA-cam do it.
The pressure lube equipment is worth a chunk by itself, that rig is the mechanic special. You did good.
Congratulations on the new service truck. From what I have seen, you can fix it one way or the other, and use it for many years.
Congratulations, you will love that E - vac system as far as oil changes. You can drain oil from fill tube no mess , or clean drain pan out without making a mess. Definitely happy to see your good fortune!! Love the video’s keep up the good work !! Sincerely Dave!
Congratulations on your service truck. My first service truck was a county retirement . It had 40,000 miles on a factory new 350motor with a turbo 400 . I loved it sadly before i got it set up like I wanted . A drunk driver in a grand Cherokee ran into my tow truck and landed on my service truck . The insurance company got them.
I replaced the service truck with another GMC but this one came from the le-may car museum. Nice low miles bigger but now I'm old and retiring so I'll probably sell it
Nice score J.C! 😀 that truck looks great overall. Nice that even though the engine has a problem, it still starts up so you can move it around easily! Hopefully its an easy fix. If not, I would love to see a cummins swap 😍.
You need to make a service truck out of one of the F800s!
In my opinion western truck repair is probably the best guy to talk to on powerstroke repairs. I’m real happy you’ve at least got a project to build from. Real nice setup
i like warren and he is knowledgeable but if you want to talk with someone who KNOWS superduty engines, talk with anthony. his channel is "superduty service". you wont find a man that is more knowledgeable, dedicated to precision and accepts nothing less than perfection.
@@j.c.smithprojects Another person who has many years of experience with Powerstrokes from the 7.3 to the 6.7 is Bill Hewitt of Powerstrokehelp.com
Awesome glad you found what you needed. I’m also a guy who finds the usefulness from what someone else walked away from. Best of luck
the bigger the risk...the bigger the reward!
Haven’t checked much comments here but just in case no one has said it or you don’t know, 2011-2014 6.7 Powerstrokes had a couple problems. Turbo came with ceramic ball bearings so look into a retrofit kit for 2015+ turbo kit, SPE sells an upgraded factory if you want a little more power out of it, it’s not crazy but is good for towing and overall mileage. Address the CP4 HPFP, it will destroy the engine no matter what, it’s only a matter of time if that isn’t already the problem. You can buy a simple disaster prevention kit if you don’t feel like investing in a new or Aftermarket pump. Also Ditch the DPF and EGR if possible, atleast do the DPF and get a tune to disable the EGR. Idle hours kill these trucks with all the emissions equipment attached. Once you delete it, you’ll get way more power and reliability out of it.
Looking forward to seeing further videos on the repair/replacement of the engine and what you do with this truck. It's hard to run a truck repair/sale/restore business without a really decent service vehicle. Now you have a great one, it seems. Not only do you have the best detailer in the world but also the best looking! Seriously, it is really great to see how well you two work together and the obvious respect you have for each other. When you have that you never really work a day in your life.
i sold this truck. truck prices were so high that i could not pass up the opportunity. when the economy tanks....(because we know its coming) i will pick up another service truck then. i have added more tow trucks and trailers to my collections. so i dont need to do as much of sight work as i once did.
@@j.c.smithprojects They are nice work trucks and so handy. My son has a heavy equipement/truck repair shop and he does a lot of site work. I think he has three of this kind of truck now on the road. His best deal was a three year old Dodge extra cab from texas w/ low miles. Usedin the oil fields 'till the company went out of business. He got a real deal on that one.
Good luck to you!
Very nice👍👍
I like my toolbox on the passenger side but that is because I'm usually on the road with a breakdown.
Can't wait to see more
i agree. the tool box would be better on the passenger side but for this truck, that would mean the torch tanks would have to be on the driver side.....no thanks!
Very nice truck JC! Can’t wait to see you get her back into shape!
Congratulations, JC !!! I am happy for you!!!
Hope the engine difficulty doesn't turn out to be a big job. Looks like a really great truck. All the best from Canada
I want one so bad. Good luck 😃
Update that 6.7 to 2016 specs. Ditch the ceramic bearings in the turbos and other issues.
Congrats on your major addition. It would be cool to see you swap a Cummins into it. Pulling the cab off will allow you to treat any rust on the frame and, of course, get to know her intimately. You want to start off the relationship right.
It sounded like at least one cylinder is down on compression when you were cranking it over. Leads me to believe something up with the valves. I don't know much about the 6.7... but I'm sure you will be able to educate. Nice truck I look forward to seeing you working on it.
That year is known for the intake vauls cracking on the passenger side and they do it around 180,000 miles can't wait for the build
That’s a perfect set up, look forward to seeing it running 100% 👍
That’s awesome, we got one just like it, first thing is first egr and dpf delete with 5” straight. Thank god I did it egr was already leaking coolant, and gave me better mileage. Also get spe thermostat it runs way more cooler than factory.
Absolutely! But if he deletes it he won't be able to do a video on it. There are some improvements you just can't talk about.
That's a good-looking rig JC I think this truck is going to work very good for you you should do what you think is best for you with this truck
Looks like an old United rentals truck. It is set up similar to the truck I’m in. The main differences in the bed are my bottles are in the rear driver’s side box and I have the Vanair arc-n-air on a PTO.
Good luck with it. Looks like it has everything you need for your work.
If it was a 6.4 truck then a cummins swap is needed, but that 6.7 is a decent power plant.
That will be a good service truck when completed and stocked.
i will just have to keep it out of "public view". seems like every time i build a truck for myself, someone always wants it more than me and is willing to pony up the dough to get it.
Also 6.7 powerstrokes 2015+ are a good power plant, although not as much aftermarket support as Cummins, you wouldn’t get much more reliability if maintained properly, and the 6r140 that they’re paired with are pretty durable, I mean Allison probably has it beat but I don’t think there would be much of a gain for how much money you’d spend to get one and start fitting it in it.
This is going to be a great project! Cant wait
You will get the motor sorted out in no time. Awesome rig should provide many years of service and a bonus you didn't pay retail but sweat equity should discourage you from selling once you get it done.
i will have to keep reminding myself how long i looked at these trucks all the while knowing i couldnt afford them.....
Glad you found just the truck spec-ed the way you would have had it built if you were ordering it new.
Oh wow jc you must be as happy as a kid on Christmas morning
i am for sure chad. i will likely fix this engine. i wish i could make the time to put a common rail cummins in it.
That's one of those early 6.7 powerjokes, they had issues with crank shaft breaking, but this one still runs. Nice set up, I'm sure you can handle an engine swap, even if you didn't have one already, they should be easy to come by as later ones are reliable, not sure if an older ecm would play nice with a newer engine though
I personally can't wait to watch you tear into it, I don't do it often, but I turned on my notifications so I don't miss you take that truck apart.
That is a nice truck. Don't you have another 6.7 engine lying around from the donor truck for the F-550 project you and Brandon rebuilt the frame on? Interested to see what the inside of a 6.7 looks like.
yes i do. that is one of the reasons this was an attractive purchase.
Wacko the diddelyo JC just what we all out here need. It’s great truck for you. Bloody big crane with remote control. Woop woop! Great purchase mate. You could lend it to the BGM for some of his bus Detroit engine swaps. Lol. Greetings from Australia.
Awesome buy! Some friends of mine who are brothers own a mobile diesel/hydraulic repair company. They only have 550s with similar setups however they are 7.3 powered mid to late 90s models with manual transmissions. They personally drive early 00 model Fords with 7.3s. Altogether they have 7 vehicles with 7.3 motors.
I agree on the Cummins if the PS repair is cost prohibitive.
I also like the Ford 7.3. What a workhorse!
Nice chassis to build on, sounds like compression is low when cranking, I'd guess you have a burned intake valve by the sound of it.
You have to go into the "Reset for System Check" menu for idle hours.
Yep yep yep
It is a nice truck. You work hard you deserve a truck you enjoy.
So happy for you
so much better than the railroad truck that was too far gone
We are Gonna need a 10 minute update everyday till it’s don’t 😂👍
It's a ford... But if thats what you like more power to you.. Good luck with it. It seems to have nice equipment!
When it says "reset " for system check press the reset (down arrow) it'll give you all that info, plus the oil percentage, but hopefully by now you know that.
Nice truck! I have basically the 2015 version of that truck. My F550 has the 7600# Autocrane 11foot bed and crane though. I idle my truck 12-16 hrs a day in the cold Ohio winters or Hot summers. My 2015 has 6500 idle hours so far but only 138K. Only issue so far was my DEF tank heater went bad last year and I blew an outrigger hose on the right side 2 months ago. I do have an upper oil pan leak that is leaking on my front driveshaft and rear wheel seals need replaced.
i still have not touched this truck! it keeps getting pushed back because of other trucks become priority.
@@j.c.smithprojects I fully know what you mean! I have several projects and the squeaking wheel always gets the grease!
Nice truck, man I love that oil hose setup
Excited to see what’s wrong with it and eventually being used as your service truck
if i can get it going, it will be a huge time saver for me. no more trying to think of what all i need to gather up to take. just to get there and realize i forgot something.
Perfect work truck. Best of luck to ya!
Former hertz/united truck. They always sell them like that. Likely broke a valve. Early 6.7s have that issue. Fyi the 6.7 ford is excellent have 270k on mine-10k hours. Full emissions. Original trans/engine. F550 service truck- 20k weight.
Also idle hours are in the setup screen on the steering wheel. If it does not work, you need a clock spring
Score. I like this , its got dang near everything you could think of if you have a truck down by the side of the road to see if you can get it going, this would be nice if your ever going to look at a batch and you want to poke around because you would have just about all you need onboard that you would like to carry, I could see this being handy to have and no not cheap by any stretch even a few years old but you think of the cost of one new and then to set up like this... lol that isnt for the faint of heart. I think you ought to be able to fix the engine up, that is the funny thing about fleets when they get to the number or years, it's just iron to them they would rather replace than fix when it gets close to their internal miles or year that they consider a truck expendable
I am suprised they left so much of the gear in it, most times I see them the crane stays but everything else is out, some stay with most of their stuff included but you see it reflected in the price. Nice score, now the question is how long can you manage to keep it, I can see a lot of people banging on your door wondering if your going to sell it... even if the engine needs to be swapped you could easily sell this one as is or throw some part ad selling it as a working one... but popping on the intake most times isnt too bad, I have seen more rockers then anything else. look forward to the getting to it video
way too nice for what i am use to! having this truck will save me so much time. have all the tools, parts and fluids on hand all the time. keep it in the shop where it is out of the weather and clean....sounds like a fairy tale.
Nice service truck looks good 👍
Very nice truck, alot of use in the future 👍
Looks like a score! Hope it was maintained.
Awesome! Congrats on your new trk wish you best bud ! Very nice 👍
For hours push setup then reset.
My service truck was $107000 new in 2016. F550 same tank setup and compressor. But mine runs on a PTO. Miller 325 amp welder. The company I work for is replacing a2010 with 55000 miles . Not setup as nice as mine.
Don't understand why people would want to change a torqueshift for an Allison. Allison is good but the torqueshift is one of the best heavy duty transmissions out there. The 6.7 power stroke also has a good reputation. I know of more people personally that have had trouble with the newer Cummins engines than the 6,7 power stroke. Sweet work truck btw.
i feel the same about the 5r110 and the 6r140. the only reason i would do it it is because the cummins i would choose would already have an allison mated to it and it would be simple to use the 2200 i have. this would save me making an adapter for the cummins to the 6r140....since no one seems to make one.
Cant wait to see it all set up and a tour of it!
Well deserved JC its everything you need for your fleet of trucks
it really is everything i need.
Awesome JC!

Doug@ the "ranch"
I'm watching this video for the second time and I didn't realize with the first video what you actually acquired,as far as the motor to you that's minor
That is an awesome service truck.
Congrats on the new truck. I am jealous lol
Great truck.. 6.7 cummins, 2000 series Allison would be the perfect swap.. and very easy to make emissions legal.. 🙄 although I have a soft spot for mechanical dt466 and dt360 with a p-pump..
I have a 96 3500hd with a 12v 5.9 swap I did 10 years ago still starts and pulls hard every day, 10 years of working the snot out of it on a unknown used motor in the mountains,. I got my money out of it and then some.. I am sure you will do the same,. Now I just need the same truck crew cab flatbed on the west coast.. for the right price so I can swap it..
Nice find!
Fix the motor and a set of all terrains. A lot of farmers here are switching to a similar setup.
Great job jc
Got a truck just like that sitting on the yard. Herc bought a bunch of them. Had a ton of problems out of them Mi t M compressor welder combos. I think it has a robin/Subaru tho on the compressor tho
Nice truck I bought a 2011 with a bad engine from the auction. The problem was the glow plugs broke off an ruined the cylinder.
Very Nice! ConGrats!
Who would have guessed a ford with a blown up powerstroke 😂 That should make one heck of a truck once you get it going though and will probably last a lifetime if you keep it. Got to add a fuel tank to the set up though...
a service truck that idles most of its life has an engine problem...who would have guessed? i will likely fix this engine if it is cost effective.
@@j.c.smithprojects I bet you can get it going for reasonable as long as the cylinder wall isn't damaged. I would guess it has between 8-9 thousand total engine hrs. and probably 4,000 hrs at idle If I were a betting man...
that is going to make a sweet service truck.
eventually...i have too many projects in front of it right now to even look at it. i am thinking it will be a valve rocker issue and may have piston / cylinder damage. it may need to come out and be gone through completely.
@@j.c.smithprojects wouldn't be surprised. back when i got my little service truck (350 chevy engine) had a dead miss 0 compression on 1 cyl bent valve bent push rod piston hit the valve, i shoved a junk yard engine in it, later ended up rebuilding the engine that came out of that truck and that's now the engine that is in the jaguar.
Man that thing is set up nice 👌
Great find
Check your top end the popping back through is usually a head problem and that what it sounds like
i believe it to be a rocker / valve issue.
Cant wait to see the next video cant remember if the 2015 had the go plug problems where the ends would fall into the engine and grenade it
I didn’t understand all that taking the cab off stuff. Then I started seeing listings with engine problems saying our shop isn’t set up to take the cab off and the truck cab and chassis is $1500 dollars. Or a big truck for $2500 now I get it.
if i could buy these that cheap....that is all you would ever see me do!
Had a 2012 f450 do same thing, rockers got worn, popped push rods off broke lifter retainer and turned a lifter and ate the cam, parts were about 5500$ cad from Ford new cam lifters holders rockers head gaskets and all that, I deemed it as poor maintenance idoling all day and not changing oil enough, fairly easy to do the work
Cam was only 230$ cad from Ford
Also new front cover aswell
if the cam was ruined by a a turned lifter, all that metal went through the engine. it would have been taken out, stripped down, tanked, heads done, completely inspected and then rebuilt.....or replaced with a superior engine.
Absolute UNIT! 👌🏾
Ford dealership technician here. Don't even bother to waste your time trying to figure out what's wrong with it. It won't be cost effective to "band aid" this engine. Not to mention the lack of parts available from Ford to repair this engine. Do yourself a huge favour and simply just long block this truck with either a Ford remanufactured unit, or a reliable used unit. Don't listen to these guys telling you to put a Cummins in it. You'll be causing yourself a lot of unneeded headaches and greater expense if you go that route.
i will take it apart and find out what happened. i will make my decision on how to proceed after find out what it will cost to repair, replaced or repower. if i decide to repower, it will be because i believe it is the best solution for my situation. if i use a cummins, it will be done properly and the truck will function as it should.
Hey, I know where the Mi-T-M factory is, it is in Peosta, IA I have seen it and they make really nice stuff!
Thats my dream truck! Except I want a GM 4500 chassis. Cummins swap it and it will last a lifetime! My friend just bought brand new Ram 5500 set up just like this and it cost him $140,000.
stick around.....i have a c4500 crew cab that i am going to ditch the isuzutrash and put a superior diesel in with a manual transmission ......it will be a vary hard truck to beat towing.
Very interesting. I'm in the market for a similar chassis that I can install a dump box. I'm betting you'll fix it as is.
hard to say...i have a 2013 crew cab with 16,000 miles that is a 6.7 4x4 that i could put this body on.
That’s an awesome Service truck
If it’s a keeper, I’d go with a Cummins!
Service truck envy 🤤👍
Nice truck I believe it deserves a new motor
Surprising that 6.7 powerstroke lasted to 185K. I Cummins swapped an Expedition that sounded about the same but not quite as bad when it came in to me. The junkyard 12 valve Cummins
Purred like a kitten but had to buy an aftermarket module to trick the computer to talk to the stupid computer and transmission module to get it to work right together Owner real happy. Over 100K trouble free miles since I did this job almost 2 years ago. If he wasn't family I'm might have passed on the job as it was a fair amount of work, though can do it again easier. Check the guys at power driven diesel. I have been watching you for a while now and think it tv should be easy for you. If you don't turn up the power you should be able to pass emissions if they check it where you are. 6.7 Powerstrokes that still run from the junkyard wont be cheap so repairing the one in the truck is cheapest option if not too much damage to fix Whatever you decide Good luck. Can't wait to see what you decide
Have a 2012 F450 since new 340,000 1 injector, and intercooler hose blew off once. Fuel filter changes every other oil change. Not even dpf or def problems.
185,276 miles on the truck getting 9.4 mpg average equals 19,710 gallons of diesel burned. Maybe more with idle hours included.
Scale that truck and find out what your numbers are if there's any chance your gonna get run across DOT scales. My 550 with a 10K crane on it was over 17K pounds empty. Not much payload left on a 19,500 chassis for working with heavy parts / tools.
i am betting it is every bit of 15,000 lbs empty. truck tires wheels and parts sure do add up fast!
Looking forward to this one.
Reset for system check will give you Total hours and idle hours.
Looks like a good clean body on it. It’s going to be real handy to have man.
hardest part is going to be keeping it. when it is fixed it will have the potential to make a great profit.....just have to remember how long i looked for a truck like this and couldnt afford it.
Awesome buy
Would be nice to know if someone went through that fuel system and if it has an updated turbo since it’s a 2012. Should do some necessary preventative maintenance while the engine is apart!
Turbos on f550 are different than 250/350. Not quite as problematic. As for fuel systems absolutely. Cp4 pump is the weak link in these things. Also would replace every valve in the head. 2012 450/550 were valve droppers. However, normally it happens much sooner. Still an excellent engine especially if your forced to keep it emissions legal. The 6.7 emissions system is excellent. Far superior to anything out there.
Kevin Oscarson you’re right forgot cab and chassis have different / smaller tubos.
Now, J.c., repeat after me: This one's not for immediate sale...
Get some use out of it and some understanding for exactly what you need and want out of the truck you end up building for yourself...
I try not to get excited anymore. As soon as he starts doing cool stuff, someone comes in and ruins it by buying it! LOL
unfortunately it is the nature of the business! once a build starts coming together......buyers take notice and are usually willing to pay enough to gain ownership.....it just means i can move on to another build!
@@j.c.smithprojects You've always made it abundantly clear that everything in your world is for sale. I admire your resolve, if I had that in me, I'd have a lot less stuff!
Nice truck for you.
