- This is a ISM Clutch Motor. I discuss and show all the various parts and discuss how they work. I go over the wiring diagram and talk about reversing motor direction between clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Can`t beat these motors they are still making them, compared to most modern makes these are like a shire horse,just keep going for years
I have never been able to sell one and I have listed a few. You are lucky, Your favorite motors are also affordable. I get about $3.50 for them at the scrap yard and I have scraped dozens.
@@AlexanderDyer I know most people are heading towards induction motors , for a few reasons, being lighter, softer start, speed control,
But these motors can be sold as a motor for other projects, they usually come with the off and on switch,
you can link the clutch leaver to operate by foot if rigged up , they have there own motor bracket, it can be set to run left or right, its a motor that shown it can last,
You can bolt these down and run to a pulley wheel with a shaft , then connect a spiral spikes to either end then put buffing wheels on,
now you have a buffing machine,
You can screw a round bigger circumference metal or ply wood disc to where the cork screws go and then stick Velcro or double sided tape to the metal disc then put sand paper disc to the Velcro or to the double sided tape , now you have a sander,
There are so many things you can use them . man $3.50 few

Kita jgn cuba nak Repair sendiri, buka sekru, sudah nya kita tidak blh jahit macam biasa. Kena la saya panggil technicion betul kn. Cina tu ckp kak lain kali jgn memandai kak. Biar kita yg betul kn. Sebenarnya, nak baiki tu kena ada kemahiran mekanikal. Kalau xtau memang betul jgn main. Tapi kalau ada kemahiran mekanikal, tak kira nak baiki apapun boleh. Jangan kata baiki mesin jahit, baiki roket pun xde masalah. Kerana percayalah kalau tukang bengkel atau anak2 yang berkemahiran mekanikal/robotik selepas nonton video ini pasti boleh baiki punya no hal.

I am in the process of setting up an old Sewing machine that uses a Consew clutch motor (STK-M2). Although the motor I have is not an exact match, it appears to be almost identical in many areas. It was very helpful and I was impressed with your concise and professional video. Thank you very much.

Thanks for this video...I just bought a 206rb from a military unit that turned it in. On initial inspection it appears to be in great shape. I plan to follow your steps as soon as time allows. (So many other projects, so little time) a little gloat, if I may....I paid $50 for the complete rig....so stoked. I also have a Singer 211..... I'm wondering which one will prove out as favorite.

Great videos! All of them! New subscriber here with a quick question: Just bartered for a Consew 206RB and it has the same clutch motor as this video (Tacsew 1/2 hp). I blew out the lint in the motor and now I hear some minor squeaking noises from time to time. Now that I have it opened up and I've cleaned the cork it sounds like the noise is coming from the power cord end of the motor. How might I diagnose and access? Thanks in advance.

Good evening you made my dade, Thank you. I'm came across with silken motor from brother sew machine that i trying to bringing back to life. Where i can buy the clutch and the brake . motor work perfect. the pulley is freeze the corch from the brake is glue to the metal disc, after i cleaning become free turning but making noise when stoping. thanks for your help
This is an excellent video!.. my wife recently started hearing a fairly high pitched noise when using her machine (similar to the one in your video). It started off as a low drone and got progressively louder and higher-pitched. We suspect one of the bearings is faulty..but i will first try to clean the clutch plate to see if that is the cause. Can the motor be disassembled to change the bearings?...can you do a video to show this?

Another thing I prefer about servo motors is the predictable power for punching force at a very low speed. Unlike clutch motors that deal with friction in the clutch where as soon as the needle does punch through for the first stitch it often takes off very fast.

An electrician should have no problem replacing that switch. I don't like to cover electricity too much, I know just enough to be dangerous, lol.

I have always thought it would be helpful if someone where to show how to do a teardown/repair of an industrial sewing machine clutch motor. I have a couple that have stopped working and I don't know why. I want to repair them, but don't know how. If you know how to do it, perhaps you could post a video about it. Just a suggestion.
Also, do you happen to know if possible to convert a three phase sewing sewing machine motor to a 110v two phase? I have a Juki that I want to convert, if possible.
When one doesn't work, it is generally electrical rather than mechanical and I tend to stay away from electricity as a topic. If you are handy with a volt meter, test your switch if that is working the next most likely culprit is the start capacitor.
What I did since my house does not have 3 phase was to install a 3 phase converter.
Electricity can be dangerous if handled incorrectly so you assume all risks when working with it. That or hire a professional.

Smoking is bad. I can't diagnose from here. Get a mechanic or replace motor and don't risk your building to the possibility of fire.
I have a singer its similar to your. The person who had it hadn't used it in years. It turns on but wont engage. Or sew any suggestions the cork bit works . Looking at it it could be the belt

Natalie I have a clutch motor that is squealing what can I do to repair or change motor. When I turn it on it screeches an then when I turn off the squeal starts up as it wines down

These are AC motors and as such do not have carbon brushes to replace.

I just got an industrial Brother DB2-B755-5, well equipped with foot (CAN$125) and i want to use it to do fashion clothing for me etc and would like to sew light leader. What do you recommend? I am on a small budget.
I would say you have got a great machine to start with. Start with that and perhaps it will do all that you need. If however when you get into leather you find that the projects are not feeding through as you would like then you can save up for another machine to go with your Brother. Look for a machine with triple feed.
Hi. Did you say “cork” clutch? Mine is worn out and I need to know how to replace it and what to replace it with. That is the part where you had to scrape some things off. Have done a make shift with carton but I’m afraid it’ll burn and can I grease in there?

How to select capacitor value for motor textima .4 kw
Thank you for the clear and concise demonstration of the inner workings of this type of motor. Sorry for the long comment, but I have a question about re-purposing one of these. I replaced the clutch with a new servo for my Singer 20u33 (happy with that). Now I have this big motor that's crying to be used for something. I would like to build a DIY 12" disc sander for woodworking (with built in dust collection). Do you think it would be feasible to remove the clutch lever assembly, remove the cork ring, and get down to the chunky metal wheel that is shown at 3:11. Then use 4 new longer screws to attach a 12" MDF wood disc onto that chunky metal wheel? I'm thinking that however careful I am, there would still be some degree of imbalance, and I could very carefully hold a supported chisel to the edge of the wood disc, like a lathe, and feather it to a balanced round shape. I know this is unconventional, but do you suppose it would work ok? In theory, at least? There are a number of UA-cam vids of folks making DIY sanders like this, to see what I'm aiming for. Looking forward to your thoughts.
Looking at the still frame again at 3:11. . . and I'm thinking I might also need to incorporate a spacer disc first, then the final 12" disc, in order to clear the motor mount bracket.
I think it is certainly worth a go. I have sold too many for scrap and I would love to see more of them repurposed.

Hi Alex, I have a motor with the clutch and today clutch got kind of jammed. I stopped sewing and machine was keep running. Clutch got stuck and didn't bounce back. Machine is new, any tips would be appreciated.

No, that might be another country than the US. I will say that if it is possible with your motor there is probably a diagram on the side of the motor itself.

I've been noticing these motors for a couple of years with the vague thought that I might be able to use one to power a small lathe. The most powerful I'd seen for sale up to now was only a 1/4hp unit, and that just wouldn't offer enough torque for metal turning, but I see yours is a 1/2hp. That would probably be just about the minimum my little lathe could get away with. I was getting quite excited about that.......... Until you showed the cork friction material. :(
I'm pretty sure that corks not going to handle the load, and even if it did, the extra slipping as the motor tried to get the weight of the countershaft pulleys and head stock spinning up to speed would probably powder the cork in no time. It's a shame because for a reasonably heavy duty clutched motor these are pretty cheep second hand, and the idea of a lever operated brake on my little lathe is quite appealing.
I'll have to have a look into the possibility of using an alternative DIY friendly friction materials to see if it's viable to remake a clutch and brake pad for one of these.
Go to Amazon and type what I put in below. It's brushless with more power. It says clutch but there's no clutch. If you'll look at the little gray lever with springs on it... That controls the speed. I take the springs off and adjust it to where I need it. I also take the pulley off and put a crowned wheel to run a 1x42 custom knife sander/sharpening system. Good luck. 👍

Thanks for all these useful videos. Im having a problem with my industrial sewing machine motor. The motor keeps on making fan like noise after its switched off. I just replaced it after my old one got damaged. This one is used condition. My old motor used to stop as soon as you hit the button, this one takes more than a minute to stop. Any one got any idea about the problem please help.thanks

Nice video Sir! Question- I have a clutch motor that is "grabbing" when the pedal is pressed. Can't seem to "slip the clutch" to allow the motor to start more slowly. Motor is several years old but in good condition. Should I open clutch/ flywheel end and clean the flywheel and clutch as you have shown in this video or is there something else that would correct this issue? Thank you very much for your help!
Worth a shot, might help it to not grab if it does turn out to be rough or dirty or you might find you need a new cork disk.

Why do you have the option to change rotation direction clockwise or diffrent, what does it gives me?
On the tag there is "60 cycles" what does it means exactly?
A clutch motor alway runs the RPM it is set for? how can you use less RPM of it just by Playing your leg with the pressure plate
touching the motor clutch core - it means it is not natural, planned and destinated for it but it works, when you are experienced
you can get a good control speed similar to a servo motor, but the question is, it is bad for the motor or not?

That motor could be put on another machine that requires a different direction.
60 cycles is your household current.
Those clutch motors are super tough so just feather it is as much as you want to control the speed, it will not hurt the motor and the clutches are replaceable if worn out.
If your motor runs then you don't need a capacitor. If your motor doesn't you might try a new one.
If you unscrew more nuts and bolts you are on your own hahaha
I have a Consew dual RPM clutch motor rated at 2850 / 3450 RPM that I need to replace. How do I know which speed it was being ran at to get a proper replacement? Most motors today I see are rated at 1750 or 3450 RPM.

Mr. Dyer I have a motor like this. It’s installed on a Singer 96-10. It’s an old machine I’ve owned for 35+ years I truly like it. I’m having a problem with it stopping and sewing. When I cut it off an back on it sews perfectly for about 4 seconds and stop with the motor still running. Are you able to tell me what’s wrong? Should I take it down and do what you demonstrated in this video? Thanking you in advance for the help.
I can't tell what the problem might be by your description. I think you just need to get under there and take a closer look and see if you can spot the malfunction.

@@AlexanderDyer I access to a couple of these $30-40 and would like to use one or both as replacement motors for 1x30 and 1x42 belt sander/grinders that are turned into knife sharpeners. These motors spin pretty close to perfect speed (1725 RPM I believe) for sharpening while the stock motors turn 3450 RPM. I just need the clutch to lock up 100%. Well, street thinking about it... Maybe I just need to wedge something between the arm and the motor housing for full lockup? 🤔

Alexander Dyer....thank you for your time. Outlets in shop are dead, even though overhead lights were on and extension cord I ran to house was not plugged in. Three people here and I tell one to help and plug cord, but they forgot. Machines humming fine and we had a good laugh. Due to ill health, I had not been in shop for few years. I figured maybe motors got locked for not being used for so long.

Hey! I am currently taking my clutch motor apart. I just got off the phone with an industrial sewing machine specialist (i'm hunting down some parts) and he told me that people are shifting over to servo motors because they are 1- more quite 2-have variable speeds (unlike the clutch motor like this which has essentially one speed which only can be changed by getting the smallest pulley possible for the motor) and 3-uses less electricity. I recon as it is with most things, it depends on your personal needs. Right now I'm sticking with my clutch motor, but I will probably end up getting a servo motor cause I'm expecting to find I need variable speed control.

That is the pulley. The bigger the pulley on the motor the faster your machine will go. Measure your shaft diameter for a proper fit.
Thanks! Today I have been looking a place for buy it. They asked me for the motor brand and the model for they to know the one I need. Well, is a Speedway clutch motor, model DOL 12H. They don't find this motor and the suggestion was I should buy a new clutch motor. What do you think I should do?

Hello again. I found at amazon.com, some pulley and they have from 45mm until 120mm. The one closer to mine is 90mm. I am thinking to buy this one. If I want my machine be slower, which one I should to buy?

You need to reverse the direction of the motor. Notice that the wiring diagram includes both a clock-wise and counter clock-wise schematic.
do you have one of these with a pulley speed reduction set up?
No. It is possible however since the cost of a speed reducer is as much or more than a servo motor I always go that route. For me the servo offers more control and a more simple setup than that of a clutch and reducer.

Some work better than others. Did you see the part where I cleaned up the fly wheel and made it real shiny? That made this motor behave much better, my clutch was good so I reused it but yours may be worn out and need replaced. get the smallest pulley you can find for your motor. After you do all that you might find that it is better but probably not exactly like you want. Then you will buy a servo to replace it for a $100 and wonder why you didn't do it sooner. amzn.to/2oWVAg7

I’m not very mechanically inclined, so I don’t understand why this clutch motor has potential energy stored inside it, even after the power is switched. This seems like a very important fact to know, for safety’s sake. I wish you could do a more detailed video on the differences between a servo motor and a clutch motor. Thank you, Alexander.
When you turn on a clutch motor it starts spinning at 1700+ RPM when you shut it off the motor slowly spins down to zero. Like if you are riding a bike and stop pedaling, the bike will keep going for a while.

I should also say that the pedal controls a mechanical connection ( the clutch ) and not an electrical connection and so that transfer will still occur during the time that the spinning motor spins to a stop after power has been disconnected.

Despite being manufactured in the 1980's, this type of equipment looks so ancient you'd think it was from the Henry Ford original Model T assembly line.
SOS please, I assembled my new industrial sewing machine. It same as the one in the video. When I pressed the foot pedal the machine was running but the belt and needle were not moving. Smoke started coming from the motor and it was very warm.
What could have gone wrong on a new motor. Can I repair it at home. So disappointed was looking forward to sew instantly
Hi, there is no way I can say for sure what your particular problem is but I would encourage you to look at the belt and the path that it takes. Make sure that it is on the pulleys properly and that the belt is not caught on or rubbing against anything.

Please, what should I do after finding out my motor is burning
My motor in the labeling says 32 mF capacitor but connected is a 8mF capacitor ?? You know why this is? It is not starting or starting very slowly
I think you may have Identified your problem. Did someone install an 8mf capacitor where a 32mf should be? If so then what do you think the solution is?
@@AlexanderDyer it seems like the original one and never changed ,i also see many videos who install lower rating capacitor instead of the one labeled on the plate , don't understand why
