You lot aren’t messing around with the suggestions lately, damn🤣🤯
Definitely an acquired taste these guys - Not sure if I’m there just yet but I can appreciate the talent for sure🙌🏻
Can we hit 1,000 Likes for more Meshuggah?🔥
You NEED to hear Bitter End by Fit For A King and have the lyrics on screen. Makes your pancreas BLEED!!
Edit: BTW... They're technically a Christian Metal band I believe.
I'm with you on that, Meshuggah is kind of some wankery in my opinion. Talented musicians and pioneers of metal, but I've never really found their sound to be all that interesting, despite my interests in many bands influenced by their sound.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I also feel like you're fairly new to this type of music and I think a lot of these suggestions are sending you straight into the deep end and not really giving you a chance to listen to the more accessible pieces. That said it's all subjective so don't take any of this too seriously lol.
Soulfly is a good band to get into. I recommend Under Rapture
@@RichDawg91 I love their "Dark Ages" album.
It is absolutely an acquired taste. It took me a long time to get into their style, and I’ve been a metal head from day one.
I feel like other good entry-level meshuggah songs would be Obzen, Combustion and Born In Dissonance
"The longer I listen to this riff the better it gets"
You now have a basic understanding of Meshuggah
Meshuggah: plays bleed
Noone:
Bill Burr: BRRTA BRRTA BRRTA BRRTA BRRTA BRRTA BRRTA BRRTA
Tomas Haake is a machine
Tick Tock Tick Tock...like clockwork!!
That's more accurate than most realize since those drums were initially programmed for the demo and then poor Haake had to bring it to life on acoustic drums. Poor guy wasn't sure he could do it to make the album at all! lol Dude is a cybernetic monster.
@@Schatje79 There is also live drum cam video of Bleed :) The Guy is real deal 4sure
@@KORNBG Watch the Thomas Hakke playthrough of Clockworks - much better than the drum cam Bleed video.
@@jpgduff ive watched all the drum cams waaaay long time ago,but ty anyway
I was not expecting Meshuggah just yet... I think you deserve a medal for indulging this kind of insanity so quickly. It's not what I would have suggested having just finished Tool. Maybe Opeth or something lighter like Mars Volta.
Inertiatic Esp for sure
@@tetrahedrontri roullete dares and drunkship of lanterns are super cool too
Fuck lighter 😂
Mara Volta, Meshuggah, TOOL, Gojira, Opeth
ALL MUSICAL MASTERMINDS
The fact that these guys can perform this flawlessly live blows my mind.
The guitarist of meshuggah collabed with gojira on the track "Of Blood And Salt", featuring devin townsend for guest vocals. This you must do!
Seconded
needs to do devin townsend Kingdom first before he does Of Blood and Salt, otherwise he wont know who Devin is!
Amazing song good choice
I saw them play that live for the FIRST time ever in the world!! Soundwave 2012... I uploaded the video onto my UA-cam channel!
The "riff" actually changes throughout most of the song, but the more times you listen the more things you hear. I don't think anyone is prepared to hear Meshuggah the first time.
7:13- "The guitar riff has finally ended" That "guitar riff" has been the double base from the drummer the whole time, so so you know Tomas Haake has the calfs of steel!!!
The guitar and bass are doing the same pattern as the drums but yea i laughed cause he didn't know yet either haake is the machine
Meshuggah-demiurge
Or clockworks
4:49- I still make that face when I listen to that part , EVERYTIME.
(Fun fact: Bleed took the same time to make as obzen , the whole album)
Way too early for Bleed... if ever you even aspire to tread that far. It's a "shock and awe" song. Demiurge is more universal I believe.
Man clockworks is so good, ugh. The timing makes me sick and i love it
@@Z1LT01D Nice pic! Clockworks and Demiurge are my two favorites Meshuggah songs
Opeth would be a great band for you. 'Ghost of Perdition' or 'Harlequin Forest' may be a good first listen, bc its a great representation of how versatile they are.. then delve into Blackwater Park tracks. Love this channel!
GaryDaSquid you’re completely correct. I’ve been fortunate enough to see them three times live. OPETH is brilliant.
Opeth - Blackwater Park or Deliverance. They're both amazing songs
^This
Opeth!
Fuck yeah
I would genuinely love to see a reaction to Opeth's "The Grand Conjuration". Amazing mix of prog rock and death metal.
harlequin forest is possibly one of my favs, too many good ones to decide for sure
Drew Fortune: "If i'm not in the deep i dont know what can be deeper than this"
Infant annihilator: hold my beer
appeasedbeast baby steps 🤥🤥😂
Yep, IA will just about do it! lol
@Legion of the Damned yeah they don't take their own music siriously
@@juulblom649 Yes.... They do lol.
Eh, I would say Dying Fetus, Cattle Decap, & Pig Destroyer are better bands that are heavier than Meshuggah.
A quote from an interview with Meshuggah's drummer, Tomas Haake:
"And then, of course, the further you get into the song, the more it's broken up into different segments and stuff, so there's... also a challenge in that. Like, the different... cycles that go on later in the song. But the... main obstacle for me was just learning that basic pattern. I probably-.... that song alone... I think I spent probably as much time on that track alone as I did all the other tracks combined on the new album. That's... pretty much how much time it took me to learn how to play that track."
The album "Bleed" comes from is called ObZen. And every other song on that album isn't exactly a 4|4 toe-tapper. Very complex stuff.
If you're following the cymbal, they are all 4/4 toe tappers
@Bean's Butter Review Wagon I guess what I meant is that it's not music that the general population would enjoy.
@Bean's Butter Review Wagon It did take me a really long time to figure out the bass drum pattern during the section just before the guitar break. And if I don't listen to "Bleed" for a long time, I will often forget the pattern.
@@Salomon_G There's actually one bar of 6/4 in this song and it's right at the end of the guitar solo where the silence is ;)
@@Salomon_G 100% Truth. If you can find the pulse, you can feel how the patterns weave through the music.
Drew - though Bleed is surely the most reacted to song (and likely their most popular), the rest of their discography does offer plenty of songs that aren’t as bludgeoning and straightforward. If I can, please check out “Dancers to a Discordant System”. It will blow your mind with the intricacies and shifts.
Definitely their most underrated song.... Dancers I mean obviously not Bleed. lol
A more straightforward but still fun is "don't look down" as well
I was waiting for this one, personally.
Band: Opeth
Songs: Cusp of Eternity
The Funeral Portrait
Deliverance
Cheers from Mexico
Band - Opeth
Song - yes please
opeth - to bid you farewell
Bro, please do the songs “the drapery falls” and “ghost of perdition” by Opeth
@@heisengbergaguilare7881 or Harlequin Forest, all of them are beautiful songs
@@heisengbergaguilare7881 drapery falls for suuuure. it would be good for him because it has heavy elements but its still accessible
Drew: oh man that riff is finally over
Meshuggah fans: lol no it’s not
I absolutely lost my shit laughing. He thought he was safe.
Meshuggah is a unique band no one sounds like them.
You need to listen to Meshuggah - Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion or Demiurge!
Absolutely second this, Perpetual Black Second is another great song.
Break..... Is one of my favorites. And Don't Look Down.
Yes. My all-time favorite!
It's weird because there are plenty of songs of theirs that have much "heavier" drops (Demiurge is a great example) but this song is literally just a relentless assault on the senses, which matches the lyrical content as it's about having an anuerism.
For a first Meshuggah song, Bleed is as full on as it gets. I would have started off with a less intensive song from them like Demiurge or Clockworks due to how relentless Bleed is for first timers. You've handled it pretty well though
It's easy to focus on the guitars but when you realize what the drums are doing the music just opens up to a new level even from that.
The drums are the glue that keeps the music together and working, and is working on multiple rhythms.
Meshuggah-Combustion
Meshuggah-ObZen
Meshuggah-Demiurge
Gojira-the gift of guilt
Gojira- l'enfant sauvage
Opeth-Ghost of perdition
Ties Dumont yes!!
Most metalheads: "I love metal! The heavier the better!" ... Meshuggah: "Hold my brännvin." ;-)
The fact that the guitars and bass are just following the drum double pedals rythm is insane
ngl as a guitarist and knowing that meshuggah's bassist uses pick, I kinda feel that the drummer is the one pulling the master effort. To direct everyone using every limp of your body to replicate that is nuts. Is one of those examples of a song that was developed on a guitar riff
Please react to Meshuggah Demiurge and Gojira Silvera, both are the masterpieces
the drummer tomas haake is playing poly rhythms with his feet while playing a more traditional hand driven beat that slowly starts syncopating itself at the song progresses. He starts by playing a poly rhythm then goes into offsetting each foot(he plays two kick drums). This is some of the most complex drumming out there. He said he had to completely relearn his approach to drumming to learn to play this. To even come up with something like this is insane. The dude is a living breathing metronome.
if you ever get the chance, seeing the drum cam kind of puts it into perspective how relentless the drummer is.
Next video - already recorded my friend.
@@DrewFortune97 you rock my man
Meshuggah - Neurotica: its a little easier to follow, more of a groove/rhythm to it. In 2-3 weeks you'll be searching for the hard stuff lol
Honestly, anything by Meshuggah just slams so. fucking. hard.
Some of the fast ones are kinda hard to get into, but there’s almost always a basic 4/4 going on with Haake’s right (cymbal) hand that makes the most insane time signatures and polyrhythms headbang-able.
Straight genius.
Maybe give the track "Humiliative" from Meshuggah a listen. It's what got me into them. It's not as harsh and complex, and draws you in with their odd rythms without overwhelming you. Plus, the outro riffs is one of their best.
This is the best reaction vid I’ve ever seen. It’s so badass and heavy Drew’s eyes, facial expressions and statements seems to suggest he almost can’t handle the utter awesomeness 😂😂
Never watched you before but kudos to you taking the dive. Meshuggah is one of my biggest influences as a musician. “Scared the flu off me”🤣 I’m stealin’ that shit. Great reaction vid. Thanks brotha. Stay safe overseas.
The timing needed to play this song is insane, i fucking love the drums so much. \m/ Surprised you didn't mention the brutal length of the bass drums as well. Shit just doesn't stop.
A drum cam version would be something you'd find very interesting on your spare time.
Drew Fortune: "If i'm not in the deep i dont know what can be deeper than this"
You're in the deep-end my friend, and here, there be monsters.
Big respect to you for being absolutely honest about your opinion on the songs, part of the reason youre the only enjoyable reaction channel in mý eyes.
As a metalhead myself i wanna say its totally fine not to like everything, obviously - and you should never feel like pretending that you do just so that some ppl are happy
Oh man i wanted this one for a long time ... now next stuff
Dying fetus - homocidal retribution
Slayer - angel of death
Oh Dying Fetus is a fine choice. :D
@@IR4TE hell yeah it is
Chimaira - Nothing Remains. The band that got me into "screaming". Sit with the lyrics, like I did, might work for you too!
Haven't thought about those lads in a while!
What a classic, and brutal, track! Chimera still going?
@@stevethornton3901 nah they called it a day back in 2014 I think. Probably something to do with not being able to keep a stable lineup.
Pray for all is a god damn BANGER
@@gibsoadstudios648 the whole ST album is insane!
I appreciate the honest reaction, and don't blame you for finding this to be a bit much. Meshuggah is pretty much as heavy as it gets!
If you're interested in something Meshuggah-influenced but more melodic (including a mix of screamed and clean vocals), I'd recommend "The Bad Thing" by Periphery.
There is an excellent drum cam video for this song. You should check it out. The drums on this track are absolutely incredible as you already heard, but seeing them is something completely different.
Meshuggah are probably the only band this brutal that I absolutely love. They have become one of my favorite artists. I would check out Dancers to a discordant system by them.
Yes please continue reacting to Meshuggah Drew! They have a deliciously complex and heavy style. Thomas Haake is a god tier drummer and there’s so much more good music to get through. My personal recommendation for your next song is Swarm! Love your channel bro 👏🏼
Awesome reaction. Meshuggah always has me in tears, so emotional, being proud coming from Sweden. Other suggestions:
• Attila - Proving grounds
• Dead Crown - Dethrone
• Cannibal Corpse - Sentenced to Burn
• Cattle Decapitation - Bring back the plague
• Meshuggah - Demiurge
• Signs of the Swarm - Cowards Deathbed
• Stray from the path - Goodnight Alt-right
You need to hear blackwater park by opeth
The drum cam footage of the drummer performing this song is insane. My legs begin to ache just watching it.
Can’t believe this video came so soon 😂
Got nothing to do lol
Took it like a champ too! That is punishing for a just the tip into the heavy deep end with the masters of Djent. Too early for that one, lost on him was the timing and the fact that the double bass on the drums was locked with the guitars.
Ahh man good effort for sticking through, not an easy one to get on with straight away. It's an interesting style as it is so relentless but has this interesting riff and changes throughout.
Oh boy!!! You made my day! Am a Meshuggah fan, and Jizzzz! That is my I call a kick in the ass! Good job!
Meshuggah is the quantum physics of Metal.
What about some Opeth? Bleak would be awesome.
Or Ghost of Perdition
To me the whole watershed album of Opeth is epic.... Consider this too ;)
The fact that you heard the variation from the regular riff pattern in that one part deserves a lot of cred! It’s one of my favorite sections of the song. Well done!
Gotta check out the drum play through of this man. It’s incredible. Gojira- Gift of Guilt, Lamb of God- Ghost Walking, A Perfect Circle- Counting Bodies Like Sheep, Avatar- Tooth, Beak, and Claw. Just a couple suggestions for ya man.
Meshuggah is insane live. I've seen them two years ago, and i have to say, best live experience for me so far. I didnt like them too much at the begining either, it is the kind of music you have to slowly get your self into.
I like your reactions because we can tell you are generally and genuinely just a fan of music. You give anything a chance and still show respect for things that you may not have a taste for quite yet. Keep expanding bro!
Yo Thank you been requestin this for atleast 6 months Thank you Drew!! And thank you for doing the full video
Meshuggah are relentless. It's their nature. That said, they do have much more songs that follow more "conventional" structures.
this has got to be my favorite band of all time.... love the fin poster in the back lmao
Props to you bro for indulging in this song, it's definitely an aquired taste. Esoteric Surgery by Gojira 🤘
Yey!! Greetings from Sweden! I love Meshuggah!!!
BTW the main sound that you are hearing in this song is not coming from the guitar. Its coming from the drummers.
Try fleshgod apocalypse-the violation for even more heavier drummers.
The drums :)
Haha, Drew! I feel you. I couldn't get into MESHUGGAH for over 10 years. I don't know what happened then. At some point, it just clicked, and for almost a year I listened to barely anything else but their entire discography. I felt like Alice in Wonderland, and I'm still not entirely capable to express my newfound love for these djentlemen. Keep at it! :)
"If i'm not in the deep I dont know what can be deeper than this"
I see your play and I raise you...
Humanity's Last Breath: Abyssal Mouth
Amoung all the suggestions I'll add one more, "Twelve Foot Ninja" great band live and recorded band. Great diversity as well, you would most likely dig them.
Props for diving head first into the deep end, before knowing the waters temp! That particular track is pretty grueling - I'd recommend Colossus from the newest, I think you'd feel that tempo, but it still delivers full Meshuggah chills
For future reaction when your ready to dive into this genre again, Meshuggah "Rational Gaze"
It may interest you to know that one working title for this song was 'Aneurysm', as that is what the song is basically about.
Don't know how to convince you, but Rivers of Nihil could be your new favorite band. Heavy. Deep lyrics. Innovative. Ridiculous groove. Even use a sax on a few tracks.
Meshuggah songs you need to checkout down the line! Straws pulled at random, lethargica, obzen, dancers to a discordant system, stengah, closed eye visuals, rational gaze, by the Ton, born in dissonance, monstrosity, ivory tower. I honestly have so many more, but the list would take to damn long lol.
My favourite Meshuggah song is Neurotica, i feel like it has a few more ideas in it than most other songs of theirs, not that their other songs are bad at all it just stands out to me.
The slow progression was how I got into it. Loved metal before I knew what it was, I grew up on Iron Maiden and Twisted Sister. I get to my teen years and avoided death metal until I was eased into it with metalcore or melodic and progressive death bands
Another drum machine, from quite an underrated band : Dan Presland from Ne Obliviscaris. Highly recommend the song "And plague flowers the kaleidoscope" by them, either an audio only video or the drum cam on Dan Presland's youtube channel. The song is 11 minutes long, but it's worth it in my opinion, my favorite piece of music ever written.
I'm sure plenty of people will mention it, but the reason this song was requested as a good drum song is the footwork. The guitar has lots of pretty different picking patterns, mostly fast triplets with a variable number of individual notes between, and the drummer *follows the guitar note for note with his feet.* The stamina of the guy is unmatched, he's a bloody unit. So the legend goes, getting Thomas Haake to a state where he could record this in the studio took several months.
You're right though that you probably haven't been exposed to enough music like this before, so the technicality is obfuscated. If you're interested, though, one of the most informative videos on UA-cam about this song is a bongo cover. It shows plain and simple all the complicated tripled-note patterns that the guitar and drummer are doing. If you listen to this song in your own time again, that's probably good (and pretty funny) video to go for!
Edit: In fact, you could probably do a reaction to the bongo cover in the future. It'd be pretty interesting seeing you watch all the crazy drum and guitar patterns that you don't notice first time through!
Nice to see someone that goes into something like this with an open mind and an honest opinion. The reactions were great as well.
Oh you should watch the drum cam, the foodwork is nuts
Im glad that you dig the original version and not the shorter video one!
I’d love to see more Meshuggah!
I’d recommend ”Break thos bones which sinews gave it motion” or ”do not look down” next. More groove. :)
MESHUGGAH is a very different. It took me a long times to get into them and now i love them. They are highly highly talented.
They way I understood, the topic of that song is a trope of the albums title: Obzen. The song, as the opposite of zen (peace, harmony, balance) obzen (wordplay on obscene), deals with an aneurism or as I like to think of: a cancer tumor. But sticking to the original song title (aneurism), the crimson liquid frantically spilled...bleeed...so the thing that normally keeps you alive, is serving you and does this relentlessly, now turns against you and with the same force, destroys you. It's impressive to me, because it's quite the extreme contrast building with the purpose of signalising, that one and the same thing, lives force, can keep you going (fortunately) but also can end you. I like how the concept of their album is interlaced throughout the title, lyrics and music in a similarly consistent way as tool usually does.
The first time I ever heard anything by Meshuggah was at a concert. I was definitely not ready. The relentless syncopation and time signature changes just were too much for me at the time. I get it now, and it's entertaining to hear all the shit they come up with.
Hahaha! You're so right. Metal is surprisingly very vast. Lots of sub genres to explore so it's quite easy to come across more extreme versions. Even the accessible sides of the genre have little snippets, like harsher vocals, for example. It's surprising how easy it is to go from Korn to raw, lo-fi black metal. I got into metal at 13 or so and by 15 I was already into old school black and death metal.
Bleed is definitely in the deep end. Below are some suggestions for "Beginner" Meshuggah songs:
Combustion
Demiurge
Rational Gaze
ObZen
Revisit Bleed once you get more well versed with Meshuggah, I feel like you may appreciate it more on another hearing in the future.
Keep on making the videos, really enjoying your first-time reactions
It may have been a bit early in your metal journey for a stop in Meshuggah country. lol. The important thing to remember is although it sounds like absolute chaos, every single thing in the song is deliberate, as you can tell by every instrument being in complete sync.
I love Meshuggah. Reading the lyrics while this is playing just adds even more to the song.
There you can find dozen of synonyms to a word "blood"
I can't wait for you to do Leprous, you will LOVE them! Leprous - "Slave" live at Rockefeller! You will want to listen to all their stuff afterwards!
Cool reaction. You should really check out the live drum playthrough of this tune. Intense.
The Mars Volta-meccamputechture. It’s crazy, complex, and not heavy. You’ll love it. Or maybe not...but you’ve never heard anything like it before.
Tetragrammaton too!
You really need the music video. Fascinating to watch.
Now yer talking, seen them in vicar at. Blew the head off me, great gig
Future breed machine by Meshuggah is INSANE!!!
M E S H U G G A H 🤘 Masters of the MetalUniverse. Soooo glad you did this🙏🏻 Now do more, please😁 There are so many epic songs by this band, and its all about the groove. Try Neurotica, its a masterpiece from 1998!! Sounds more like 2057...
Kudos to giving this a shot. It’s definitely heavier and darker than most of the stuff you’ve done
Stifled by Meshuggah is a great track, jazzy, much slower than Bleed and you can hear the John Coltrane influence in the guitar.
Everyone has that one song that carpet bombs the floodgates to how far you desire to go when it comes to metal. For me it was love by gojira. It starts off so ominously and then goes into a wall of annihilation. After that, nothing was ever heavy enough and i needed escalation and i never stopped looking
Dude, you need to watch the drumcam video of this song, Thomas Haake is a beast.
yeah, it does take a while to get into Meshuggah... took me a while but I really love that song now.
You gotta watch the live drum cam for this song!
So After The Burial might be something you enjoy more. Try Cursing Akhenaten, they’re like Messhuggah but I consider them entry level, so it’s perfect for you who’s just getting into it
Context;
The bass soloes in The Pot and Rosetta Stoned were based upon the bass in Meshuggah, especially the Catch 33 album
Should take a look at the drum cam for this song 🤘
It’s not a guitar riff it’s the drums. Ya need to first watch the drum cam video of Thomas Hackke then watch any video of him interviewed and the juxtaposition of how chill the guy is to the manic pace of this song is something to behold.
