OMG!!!! I would go nuts in the fabric stores- I live in UPstate NY so nowhere near the good stores. What do you do with your left over scraps? I make doll clothes to put on dolls I buy from thrift stores. I plan to sell the clothes with each doll online for extra money. I am disabled/retired and a little extra money really helps on a fixed income! Also, LOVE how easy you make it look when you are making all the beautiful dresses, You inspire me.
Besides your designs which I love, your voice is incredibly calming! Its just so relaxing!! If I am having a crazy day, I will watch your videos & bam I am calm. Also love how you think of the real shopper who can't afford expensive fabrics & accessories! Your the best!!
Gunnar, As someone who was the only one in school who could not do a sewing project (even though it was not for lack of trying!) and was ridiculed by my teacher and fellow classmates, I thought I truly was a failure. Watching a video of yours for the first time, you sound SO helpful and make me feel like I can be successful at sewing some day! I am going to ask for a sewing machine this Christmas and learn! You make me feel like I can overcome the horrible experience that I dealt with in school and prove my teacher and classmates wrong! I cannot thank you enough! In the meantime, I will watch all of your videos and learn!
I would also love to know which of these places might have an online retail presence for those of us who live too far away to come shop in person. Costuming and cosplaying are expensive hobbies so I'm always on the look out for deals and steals I can get online
A lot of the fabric shops in DTLA have wholesaler online sales, but by the yard is typically in person only in my experience unlessssss you're in a specialized store like Michael Levine's or Blue Moon Fabrics.
Yes, more! I lived in LA through the 90s and, not, do i miss it! I LOVED going downtown. Not only the fabric district but the bead district too, and the supply houses for needles, machines, etc. Oh, my. Now I have to plan a trip to LA. See what you've done?
Good evening Gunnar, oooo, how i wished i lived nearer you but i think that bus ride from Central Scotland to downtown LA is a doozy. My eyes were just popping at all those beautiful fabrics and notions, but since the only person i know there is you, lol, so i would need to sleep on your sofa, hee hee hee. We just don't have a smiggen of all that gorgeousness that you have and so close at hand. I think i would be forever skint because i love all things crafting from knitting and crocheting to embroidery, lace work(beginner level), dress making, now quilting, leather work, as you see the list goes on and it is because i had a very clever lady for my mum how could look at something and recreate it from just looking. My mum had such talented hands and taught both my twin brother and i to knit and sew before we were 3 years old and for me it just carried on. I never go anywhere without something in my hands because empty hands is a waste of valuable creating time. THank you flower for sharing such brilliant shops with us. Crafty hugs from Norah, Glenochil, Scotland
OMG, I was just up there!!! A lot of the stores that I used to go to are not open anymore, but I definitely went to that corner store on wall. I’m gonna go check out every place you listed, thanks Gunnar!
Ah, this brought back memories of my days in L.A., when I would go downtown for fabric. I could not go by myself, it was just too overwhelming, so I'd go with one of my mad seamstress friends who knew exactly where to park & which shops were best for what, and yes, where to pee! The visual overload is massive, which many people enjoy. Prices are great, selection is huge, and it is pretty fun! Thanks for the nostalgia burst!
I wish I could find places like this in Boston. I’ve only ever one found fabric store even a fraction of the size of these. These are my absolute dream! Although I spend so many hours in my tiny stores I’d probably spend at least a week getting lost in just one of these. And I only know of one discount fabric store and it’s pretty tiny. I usually don’t mind paying higher prices but I have my first solo gig as a costume designer for two operas and have the tiniest budget imaginable and it’s ROUGH
I'm in the Boston area also. When I was young, we used to go 'downtown' to the little fabric stores. They appear to be gone now. I am living in the western suburbs and the only thing near me is the big box fabric store. I would love to find something like this for online shopping. It's not just the prices, it is the limited selection .
I know it's a 3 or 4 hour trip to new York, but, I think the garment district in new York may have something similar. I'm guessing the stores in Bernadette Banner's video are more pricey, but my guess is there may be something nearer to Boston...
My son lives in LA. Next time I am in town, I’m going shopping. Can’t wait to visit all those stores! And I so would love to meet you in person. So many ??? So little time. You are the bomb! Thanks for doing this video.
Yes please!! To more videos like this. I like the field trip and knowing what is available. Thank you for sharing your treasures. PS: The wind made a very playful and cute hairstyle for you
That is so cool to see shops like that. I live in a big city and we are stuck with Walmart and Jo-Ann stores. Luckily, we have a few quilting shops that carry some interesting fabric. . A designer living here would have a hard time really expressing their creativity. . Love your videos.
I adore fabric shopping, but we only have one chain store in my city. We had a fabric clearance store that was burned out of business many years ago. So, thank you so much for this video! I love your channel, but haven’t seen it lately, so I was greatly surprised by your new intro!! I love it!! I will make a point of looking for your posts from now on! Pinkie swear!
I had to move from SoCal for employment reasons & I've never regretted a decision so much. I can't even begin to put into words how much I miss the LA fabric market. My obsession with fabric & making my own clothes began in 7th grade & never faded. My best friend was equally addicted so I have wonderful memories of spending days on end with her in my really big bedroom turned sewing room. My mum was really good about the room conversion until I told her I wanted to get rid of my bed to make more room for my sewing. I've made trips back to visit a few times & always come back with a fabric haul. I empty my Vanagon of all but bare essentials. I'd come back with it packed to the gills with my haul. Omg the buttons to be found there!
I’ve really been wanting this video!! I live in Texas, and want to make a quick and efficient trip to LA, just to shop for fabrics. So thank you so much for this video.
Thank you so much!! I am panning on going to the la fabric district for the first time soon and this is so helpful!! I also love all your fashion videos. You're amazing!!
Hi! Love this video - just wanted to say I think "Imperial trim and lace" is mislabeled as "imperial trim and bead" - Trim & Bead is just up the street closer to Maple, it's a rhinestone store - you can def get embellishments there, but Trim & Lace is down the street with the boas and hat forms and foam and all that.
How lucky I see this when I’m staying with my grandma in Bakersfield for a couple of months. I’m from the other side of the country, and it’s a small town that people don’t make videos about lol. but now I’m looking forward to a day trip to L.A… if I can convince my grandma to let me make the commute. I’m a grown adult, but she’s worried about my safety on the roads… 🥺
Pls pls don’t forget your biggest fans in Alaska!! We all (from age 6 to 67) love watching your creations and feel the love u have for it & for all your fans.
Amazing!!!❤❤❤ I recently asked a friend in Pasadena to go fabric shopping for me🤣🤣🤣 based on your previous shopping trips. I had no idea what I was asking. Thank you so much for the joyous tour❤❤❤
I literally just came back from there today such an amazing place. Some shops were a bit pricey but you can definitely find just about anything you’re looking for. Loved visiting polytex. Incredible prices on thread and elastic.
Perfect shopping day. I’m on the east coast otherwise I would meet you there. Just love what you do keep it up the world needs more people like you. Big smooch
Thank you so much for showing the places to buy fabric, etc. I would be so overwhelmed. It’s like Christmas. You are an incredible guy with an exceptional talent. Thank you again. 😊
Thanks for this! I went shopping here once and was so overwhelmed I never went back.. Will try again. As an LA native, it’s a bit of stretch to say it’s safe. It’s safe ish, be aware of your surroundings
Thank you so much for making this guide for the LA fashion and fabric district. I was so lost last time I went there a few years ago. Now I have a better resource for what shops to go to next time I make it back there.
I bet you could do a part 2 of recommendations 😉 I loved the tour and someday I would love to endulge there a bit..now I am just grateful for the safe distance from 99c treasures.
Hello ! I'm a new subscriber and when a saw you short in UA-cam, I cannot subscribe to you're channel. You're voice is so calm and sweet, you very talented ! As you can see, I'm not english but I'm a french subscriber and I have to tell you : all of you're creation is so ✨ BEAUTIFUL ✨
Thank you for this, Doll! I'm in LA for a couple of weeks for a work trip and really only have 1 day to explore on my own. This helps so much! I appreciate the work you put into making this video. Also, I just HAPPENED to have parked in the PERFECT spot for all the places you mentioned. SCORE! Also, if you could mention some good places to get quilting cotton and sewing tools that would be awesome. I'm sure I'll be back in LA again in a couple of months.
OH MY! that fabric covered in applique flowers!! I love your videos, you are so enthusiastic about everything, it's really infectious and spreads happiness. xx
I’m drooling! I haven’t been there in a few decades. I get exc😢just seeing the streets! There is nothing like it! The garment district doesn’t disappoint either. I used to get the most fabulous things! Thank you for making my day!
Enjoyed going fabrics shopping with a professional. At 75 years young I still design and make my own clothing. When I was a lot younger I would shop the garment district and material district. Please do another fabric tour. Love the unique materials for my clothes.
I can’t wait to visit LA just to go there. I’ve always wanted to become a fashion designer and my goal is to pursue my dreams in the fashion industry. Although I’m not the best at sewing and all I’m always down to learn and improve my skills. Thank you so much for this!!!! I love it!
I truly enjoyed the tour and the recommendation who you speak with in each store, love that. I was only in the fabric district in LA twice. That was many years ago when my son was a student at FIDM. I just wanted to buy fabric and lace to bring home with me. However I never did.
I could have sworn I saw the fabric used by Oscar de la Renta, containing all these 3 D embroidered, colorful flowers on it. The dress cost 7k. Taylor Swift wore it at the award show for Willow, I believe. Now I HAVE to come to LA to buy that fabric!!!
It's great that you get to choose your fabric and design, print or what have you. I just wish I had a sewing machine, I'd love to give sewing a whirl since I'm locomotive challenged. I have my pooch who keeps me company and is a great warrior for when I watch scary movies lol. She doesn't even know how multi-talented or resourceful she is to me. ♥ ooo textiles! Gorgeous fabrics I'd want so much from them thank you for toyr.
Loved this video and would love to see more. And if you ever think about it, maybe you could make some kind of list of the fabric stores you shop at and what you look for in them?
Thank you for this. The next time I come to visit my daughter who lives there, I will have to talk her into a trip down there again. I went before Covid. You made this so fun.
Hey if you haven't already, could you please do a video about how to select good fabric, like for different kinds of clothes, and a normal price range for a particular type of fabric?
Wow, I haven't been down there for 16 years. The "barracks" have been renovated or rebuilt. I can't wait to go back there again. Fabric, lace, Trim, sequins, thread, I just go crazy! I have to give myself a budget and set limits on myself, otherwise I have no room for ME in my car! Maybe I should just move in with my sewing machine!
I studied for 3 years to be a fashion designer and then I got a job in drycleaning with leather and wedding dresses. I love fabrics. Each does something different and ove differently. You explode my creative mind. I love your enthusiasm and passion. ❤😊
Gunnar!! U just make me so so happy to see u doing your thing......I want to take a weekend workshop from u.....I DO dream BIG!! TGT and have a super day!! Love love from North America's oldest city--St. Augustine xox
I was on a project runway binge and totally recognized your voice and almost died because I ❤️ you and didn't realize for a few episodes I kept trying to place the voice
I love to fabric hunt I learned how to sew my grandmother & mother were magical without a pattern I made a lot of my tops since Jr high I would buy the rest in the LA garment district I didn’t want to look like everyone else but made my kids costumes & usually whipped the up in a day or two ( no wasn’t a stay @ home mom) I always have fabric on hand 🤗🤗🤗
So envious of the variety of fabric stores...I've lived in KS, MO, OK, LA, and now IA and the # of fabric stores is a fraction of what it was 50 years ago...sometimes just a tiny dismal section at Wal-Mart. In larger cities there's Joann...and they're limited, too. 99cent fabric? Not here! I'm looking for websites for your stores now!
OMG!!!! I would go nuts in the fabric stores- I live in UPstate NY so nowhere near the good stores. What do you do with your left over scraps? This is SO helpful. The LA fabric market is so overwhelming. Thanks for always looking out!

Alysha Hurd,
Have you ever done any sewing by hand? It is a great way to learn.
If you can read, you can sew! You’ve got this! 😀
And be sure and let yourself sew and enjoy it. It's OK to make mistakes, that's part of learning and why there are seam rippers.
O ed the video! Think my daughter knows of this place! She's a teacher of "Fashion Design & Production" in Tustin, Ca.
That was me in home eve!
I would also love to know which of these places might have an online retail presence for those of us who live too far away to come shop in person. Costuming and cosplaying are expensive hobbies so I'm always on the look out for deals and steals I can get online
Great suggestion! I'll keep that in mind for future videos like this.

@@kristapottinger5012 not just Sewfisticated but also Windmill, Windsor Button and many without names.

OMG, as a sewer these vlogs are really interesting, it’s good to know fabric can be bought cheaply like this. Isn’t it great knowing how to sew? ❤️🇬🇧
I enjoy shopping and spending time with you. You do have so much to share, not just sewing
I adore fabric shopping, but we only have one chain store in my city. We had a fabric clearance store that was burned out of business many years ago. So, thank you so much for this video!

You really should! One of the ladies in my sewing group came from Georgia and I showed her round L.A... she got soooo many fabrics
I am so excited for this video. Thank You! I would need so much restraint!
Frequented some of these in the '70's to sew for home ec class. Great memories. I love to watch you sew and your personality is very welcoming.
Thank you so much!! I am panning on going to the la fabric district for the first time soon and this is so helpful!! I also love all your fashion videos. You're amazing!!

Well, now I want to go shop in LA! And I must say, don’t worry about your hair, even in the wind it still looks great. Thanks for all the great tips.
IDK what's different, but you look marvelous! Hair darker? Longer? What ever it is, looking good! Love you and your videos!
Thank you so much for this video! This is much more helpful than just knowing where the stores are. I think it’s time to plan a trip to LA.
Pls pls don’t forget your biggest fans in Alaska!! We all (from age 6 to 67) love watching your creations and feel the love u have for it & for all your fans.

It can be a lot! I'm glad I could help for the next time you visit.
More shopping videos, please. I love seeing the stores. Also, a fabric haul at the end of the video...or even a "teaser swatch" of any purchase, lol.
Oooh love this
I bet you could do a part 2 of recommendations 😉 I loved the tour and someday I would love to endulge there a bit..now I am just grateful for the safe distance from 99c treasures.

❤ this VIDEO! Brings back SO many memories!
Your personality makes me so happy on sad days, thank you
I could have sworn I saw the fabric used by Oscar de la Renta, containing all these 3 D embroidered, colorful flowers on it. The dress cost 7k. Taylor Swift wore it at the award show for Willow, I believe. Now I HAVE to come to LA to buy that fabric!!!
Feel free to take a Southern Girl on any LA shopping trip...Love you, can't wait for the newest videos !!!!

Thank You !!! I watch you all of the time and have wanted to share where you buy those beautiful fabrics so cheap !!
Great trip. Thanks for taking us with you. Never thought I wanted to see where you get the materials. Should have said about shopping in the survey
THANK YOU! For the tour!
Gunnar , Thank You for The Tour Of Your Favorite Fabric Shop In L.A. 👍 And Your Boots Are So Cool 😎
I think Gunner’s fabric would be so fun ! All your favs under one roof. Heck yeah! Maybe someday soon???? Love you dear 🍀♥️
Thanks for the trip, I've been there, and it is awesome place to buy all things sewing! I live near SF so I go to LA when I can.
Thanks for the suggestions of where to shop!
Make longer videos like this! I can't get to L.A. (or any store, I'm disabled) but I'd love to look at the fabrics more in-depth.
I've been to Wall Fabrics. They were a Godsend when I was planning my wedding!
Oh how I'd love to go shop with you Gunnar! So beautiful!!
This is so helpful! I need some lace and you just made that task much easier! Thanks!

I loved this video. I would also like you to do one about your nail polish. It is always wonderful.
I studied for 3 years to be a fashion designer and then I got a job in drycleaning with leather and wedding dresses. I love fabrics. Each does something different and ove differently. You explode my creative mind. I love your enthusiasm and passion. ❤😊

I love this!! I'm hoping to visit a friend in LA and going to the fabric district is the 1st thing on my to do list!!
Love shopping for fabric in LA. I always have so much fun. Thank you for sharing your favs. I’m going to check them out on my next trip
I wish there were places like this around here. It looks almost as relaxing as walking and browsing in a used bookstore.
Wow, What fabulous shops. Yes please keep these videos coming. I am in the Uk and we have nothing similar to you. Im well jel. xx
I love your channel your personality is fantastic, creativity, amazing love love everything you do 🥰🥰🥰🥰🤷
Love love your videos and love this tour of your favorite shops!!
Such a great video!!! I love all of your work, thanks for sharing where you shop with us!!
I love your videos! I like to sew but fabric stores near my house are expensive so I rarely get new fabrics.
