Is the FX Superior Slug Liner really better?

  • Today I explore the possibility that the FX Superior Slug Liner is much better than the original slug liner, shooting out of my FX Impact Mk I with the 700mm barrel. I am also testing to determine if you can use pellets in the slug liner.

    Love these tests, so much going on, with different power settings, pellets, pellet weights, and slugs.
    With a rifle like that, and the new barrel liner it's bound to be promising. The thing is, all this sucks you in little by little and before you know it you've spent a ton of money!! Lol I personally have been shooting pcps for some years now, love it!!
    And I've spent a TON of money as well, it's so damn addicting it's just not funny!! Especially when your kit performance is exactly how you want it. But something strange happened to me. I was paying attention to my friend's HW97k and his tx200mk3, after talking to him and showing me his targets from 25 yards to 90yards I was dumbfounded!!! He also mentioned the fact that he has used pcp rifles loved them but found it all too easy! So he got some great Springer fixed barrel rifles and personalized them to his taste, achieving some incredible groups at long ranges, he mentioned that the techniques were much more difficult, but way more satisfying...
    He said it took him at least 5 months to REALLY start seeing progress. His groups on those targets didn't lie!
    So, I thought, I could sell SOME of the pcp rifles and easily get at least two great springers, and start this journey!!!
    Well, apart from having a much simpler set up, less weight to haul around what with scuba carbon bottles, and extras, it seemed like I was extremely excited doing this test! Especially Now when I hunt for small game! And do pest control! Grant you can't do those FX Impact crazy long shots, and have the same high power levels that only those type of air rifles can deliver, but there's something oddly satisfying about being able to hit your mark on paper again and again, and it being so damn hold sensitive, and trigger sensitive!! Hunting is the real rocker when your heart is racing and with all the adrenaline after putting down a rabbit at 73 yards! Is pretty exciting... it all depends what you're going to use a kit for, personally I don't need to go out more than 85-90yards with my favourite air guns...
    But boy do I love seeing Matt from SA, and others pesting at 120-200 yards!!!!!!:-) :-) :-)
    Nice videos here, glad I found you :-)

      Thank you sir, I also shot s lot of Springers and got provincial colors in doing so, the hold sensitiveness takes time to master but can be very fulfilling, shot the AA TX200 and LGV master mostly. Awesome guns.

    Great tests as always and interesting results. No surprise the knockouts didn't like it as they don't particularly like a normal Slug A due to the 216 dia. They seem to have been designed for general barrels with a slightly tighter choke ( Pellet A, Lothar Walther and the like ) can fully understand that as JSB want then to have as wide a market as possible.

      Nice if it can shoot both, but the original liner was built for pellets, super accurate but a very slow twist rate. The newer liners have a faster twist rate that stabilizes slugs better, still good with pellets but not brilliant anymore.

    I thought the standard STX barrels were designed for pellets and hybrids the slug liner A for lightweight standard slugs like nsa and the slug B for heavy slugs. This explains why the 26 grain slugs shot good in the slug a liner. My Wildcat 3 700mm stx liner loves the 23 grain nsa slugs

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  2 роки тому

      The original liners were quit good with all slugs up to 30gr, the A and the STX. The heavy Superior liner was designed for the 30+ gr slugs. I have a simple philosophy... if your liner works with a specific slug... shoot it and don't mess around with other slugs.

    Thank you for this great video. i do need your help though regarding the new superior liner heavy .I ordered the new superior liner heavy a some weeks ago but when i got the new liner, it didnt say Heavy OR slug liner OR pellet liner, it Just had the superior sticker on it. after contacting the shop they say that this is the new heavy...Im very frustrated. shouldent it suppose to say what liner it is? Did your liner say heavy or slug liner on it?

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  4 роки тому

      I also find the naming very confusing, it would have been better to add the twist rate onto the liner (engraved and not a sticker), most of the different liners have different twist rates. But marketing is another beast on its own. At least FX is constantly trying to improve the product, other manufacturers have been using the same old stuff for 20 years...

  • @SethMcClaine
    @SethMcClaine 2 роки тому

    If I'm not mistaken the standard STX liner is the STX superior liner. Is your video covering the difference between the same two liners, or are you comparing the STX superior liner to the STX superior heavy liner?

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  2 роки тому +1

      The FX liners are more confusing than politics on a good day. The "superior" liners were introduced after the STX liners, what makes them suprior? Nobody knows. In the video I use the old STX slug liner (before the suprior branding began), I compared this to the Heavy Superior slug liner. According to the FX guys the old STX (Superior or not) is great with slugs up to 30gr and the Heavy superior is great with the heavier slugs. The difference between the two is minute, I did get pockets of accuracy improvement, but in hind sight I don't know if that is due to the Heavy liner or just due to the difference between different liners, the heavy is supposed to have a slightly faster twist rate...Who knows.Each liner differs and you will get different results from two of the same type of liners as well. I have given up on the liner battle, focussing more on getting the optimal speed for a specific slug in the liner that I currently use.

    Have you had any feedback about the reliability of the FX impact Mark II and Mark 3? From what I was told the Mark II has less issues than the Mark 3 and the problem is leakages from seals. But overall from what I hear FX has excellent products except for reliability. What's your opinion?

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  3 місяці тому +1

      The challenge with FX is the high pressure being used to get thye max power out of th guns, with that you need to accept that o-rings are going to blow. The guns itself are good, but regular leaks are common. I still have my pimped out Mk I - with 72cc Power plenum, power block built in etc. Sold my Mk II as I didn't have a use for both. WOuld like to buy the Mk III for the adjustability it has over the MK II, but not going to waste time if my old MK I is still a laser. If you buy an FX, just buy a seal kit as well, lots of UA-cam videos to replace the o-rings. They also have a warranty on new guns to fix the leaks in the first year.

      Yes, FX now has a Superior Slug Liner and a superior Pellet Liner, I chose the Slug Liner due to versatility, it shoots pellets just as good, I don't know if the Superior Pellet liner will out-shoot the slug liner. The science is different but the ability of the average shot (like myself) will probably never notice it. PS: Try the JSB KnockOut slugs in the pellet liner, it is probably the only slug I have shot with that loves a pellet barrel as well. Unfortunately H&N is not coming to the party, can't get test pellets currently and the importer isn't service orientated either. Might never get the chance to test them unless somebody sends me the stuff.

I know Daystate is bringing out the Delta Wolf - I would love to get my hands on one to test, the preliminary reviews shows it can be fine tuned almost the same as the FX... The difference lies in the twist rate, and a few other small modifications. I did do a test on this and found that there was a difference in certain slugs and pellets. Very unfair comments from you, I post honest reviews, I don't select the best grouping out of 30 or 40 attempts. If your gun is accurate with a specific pellet than good for you, I have a HW100 that will out shoot the FX everyday at 30m and 50m, but can I change the speed on my HW100 to try other pellets... NO, can I go hunting with it? NO. The FX is great because of its versatility and options. If you are looking for the best gun in the world... you will never find it. Each gun is purpose built and most guns are pellet fussy. Once you find the right pellet, weight, speed and you get good groupings, stick to it. I am testing a lot of pellets and slugs, I have found some that are excellent and some that are really bad, it doesn't mean it will shoot bad out of all guns.
