Landscape photography - behind the scenes in the Danish woodlands | using tripod, perfect exposure

  • I am in a Danish forest close to were I live to do landscape photography, and this day is nothing but amazing. Just before the spring is about to kick in, the Nordic winter surprised everybody one last time with frost and snow.
Covered in a thick layer of snow the Nordic landscape looks totally different, and the woodland i am photographing, has almost turned into black and white.
I am definitely more a wildlife photographer than I am a landscape photographer, but on such a day I just have to get out there and challenge myself with some winter photography.
It was quite a challenge to do a behind the scenes vlog and photograph in this weather because of the temperatures which were just around 0 degrees Celsius. Both the Nikon D5, the Tamron 150-600 and especially the Panasonic GH5 ( my vlogging camera ) constantly got full of snow that melted on the front element of the lens. So the quality of this behind the scenes video is not the best, but I really wanted to share this amazing day:)

Good to see I'm not the only one out in these type of conditions! It's amazing to see how much you trust the weather-proofness of the equipment..particularly of that Tamron lens where it extends to zoom in and out, water can get in.. but hey, they're just tools, the main thing is to get out there and have fun! Thanks for sharing your outdoor adventures! ;)

Another great video Morten. I love to see photographers throwing caution to the wind and just shooting in whatever weather nature offers up. Watching you try to stalk the fox reminded me of something magical that my girlfriend and I saw a fox doing back in the 1970s. It had been snowing for a few days and had also been very cold for Britain. We were walking through some woods when, like you, we saw a Fox track and decided to follow it. After a while the tracks led into a sloping field. Down in the valley there was a pond I knew about. It often had ducks on it in the spring and summer but it was for the cattle to drink from. The tracks led to the pond but it was very open on three sides so we went behind a stone wall and crept down the field until we were opposite the pond and then peeked over. How I wish we had a video camera to capture what we saw.
The fox was pulling sheep wool from a barbed wire fence. He trotted along the fence gathering the wool until he had quite a large amount. About the size of a man's fist. He went to the pond which was covered in ice except where bulrushes were growing. With the wool in his mouth he backed slowly into the water until he was under the water then he let go of the wool, scrambled out of the pond, shook himself like a dog and ran away across the field again.
My girlfriend and I had no idea what this behaviour meant. Both of us were from the city and new to the area. A few weeks later we met the farmer whose land we had walked across and we told him what we saw. He explained that the fox was getting rid of his fleas. They have to escape the water so as he backed into the pond the fleas moved up to his head and finally, into the wool. We sat in the pub dumbfounded and it still amazes me to this day.
    Thanks for reviving that memory.

Lovely video and photos Morten. Could you one day make a video about the gear and weather. For us amateurs with expensive gear always worrying about snow, rain and water on our body and lenses. Like in this videos, if Im not mistaken, that tamron lens is better weather sealed then the nikon 200-500 but both not that well ? yet still it seems like melting snow on your lens if of no concern to you. Cheers from Norway.

    • @MortenHilmer
      @MortenHilmer  6 років тому +8

Thank you so much Iv8pv. I will definitely write that on the to-do list and thanks a lot for the suggestion. I don't know how well weather sealed these lenses are, but I have never experienced any real problems. Fog of course, but that goes away again;)
I really want my gear to last very long because I would rather spend my money on traveling and trips here in Denmark, but with that said, I also need to get out there when the weather is amazing:)

Hi Morten -- very nice video. I'm running a Nikon D800 and for keeping it dry during rainy or snowy shoots I've been using a Storm Jacket camera cover that lets you put your hands inside and see the back of the camera while keeping your lens and camera protected. I know there are other camera covers out there, but thought you might want to find one to your liking. I really like that you get out in the weather to do your videos. Thanks!

That would be awesome:) Where exactly is it?

Oregon State, where I would like to take you would be Hells Canyon which is on the very North Eastern part of the state. Lots of animals there. Elk, Deer, Bear and Mountain Goats.

Another great one with very nice photos :-) The weather down here has indeed been awesome! I wish it would be like this every year but I fear we have to wait a long time for the next time.

I like to see all this snow on your gear. It shows, that you treat it like "equipment for creative work". Unlike some other peeps i know, who would miss a Picture only because of fear of gear-malfunction. I too go out during snow, rain or whatever may awaits. So far, everything survived :D Even the photographer.
Greetings from Germany and best wishes!
