Well said- every artist needs to get over the whole "wasting paint" misconception! When you're in front of the easel, it's not certain whether it's going to result in a great painting every time, but you can always be completely certain of the results if you never try! We checked out your "favorite supplies" list, and it's full of great suggestions! Thanks for including some of our private-label items, too- we're very proud to be included!
Oh my goodness! Your abstract is so what I am going for! People think abstract is easy, as, it does not replicate something exactly, but, I feel, that abstract is almost more “difficult”, as, it evokes a feel, a fluid energy that invites you into the abstract world. To me, that is very hard to do, but, it seems, you have mastered it! What a talent you are. Your sketchbooks of you abstract are my favorite. I am hoping, someday, to evoke what you do. What a wonderful artist you are. You inspire me. I am now off, to play in the abstract world! Thank you!
Oh no, I'm late again. I really enjoyed this video, it was interesting and informative. I wish I could be as loss as you, my drawings are too tight as well as my paintings. You find freedom in your process that I have trouble finding, maybe I'll find it someday. I love the large painting and the smaller one, I think they came out great. See you in two weeks, have a wonderful weekend.
Great video!!! I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE watching Sandi put product on substrate... I can never get enough of that, but I have learned SO much in all the things she says about how she thinks and her processes. Friends, watching her videos and following her advice: " let go of perfection", "enjoy the process", "don't be precious with materials", and things like timed sketches, using non traditional colors as well as too many to mention here are VALUABLE art journey gems ❣️💥😀thank you once again...the podcast was crazy GOOD!!!
I love how you show us how much the small work effects the big work. You learn so much doing those small pieces and the momentum and consistency contributes to the mammoth, meaningful pieces down the track! Cool vid.
Great and inspiring video. And can we just collectively giggle that in one of the snippets of your class you out a box on your head and started walking?! Thanks, Sandi.
I find soo hard to paint or to do anything when I have migraines, even breathing hurts. Love that landscape you are creating there, all the colors gave me 90s vibes, very nice!
Enjoyed your podcast,I agree it is about about connecting with community,I have had some amazing encounters when I was obedient to take my sketchbook out to cafes.blessings😊
I’m here for all of it, but I especially appreciate that you share your process. I’ve purchased your landscape class and your acrylic class, and I’m totally buying more classes as you make them!!! PS. Glad you’re feeling better! Sorry to hear about your cat allergy.
I love to hear you describe all the skills of experience that goes into creating your art. Your painting is gorgeous and you were totally right to nock the water back.
I can’t wait to get you book when you make it of your sketchbooks please make them available in Australia. Also I’m a chronic migraine sufferer and I’ve found that a neurologist can really help. I have 6-8 week nerve blocks and it’s changed my life.
I discovered and bingewatched your channel during a flu in November (I also have a lot of serious health issues) and it’s already seeping into my creating-life in the very best way! I’ve bought a cheap sketchbook and do a little bit of doodling and playing every morning, which makes me SO happy, such a good practice to get back into beside my normal pretty tight work. Thank you!
Thank you ☺️ for another brilliant video Sandi and for sharing about how you’ve learnt to persevere when you’re not feeling well. I suffer with Rheumatoid Arthritis so really struggle to paint at times, so your advice to just grab moments as and when you can is so helpful. You are so inspirational and encouraging to those of us who struggle with health challenges too 👏👏👏
Sandi, your videos make me so happy 😊 I love all your lake paintings and sketches, they inspire me to experiment more. I also find it so interesting how your sketches inspire your paintings at such a level ❤ And lastly I admire how you keep creating even when you feel sick. I guess you just can’t live without the joy of painting 👍🏻😘
This is the best video I have seen from your channel dear friend and sister, the depth of your artistic growth gives me so much courage, keep up the good spirit. God bless you.
Thankyou for sharing your experience of staying sharp even when you're not feeling well. I've had a lot of headaches lately and used it as a reason for not painting. I will remember your words!🥰
Well you definitely don’t have to do anything when you have a headache! I just wanted to paint and it was a blessing to be able to since I had headaches for a few days

It is summer in Australia & I find it difficult to get motivated to create. Hearing you talk about creating when unwell makes me realise that sometimes I need to push through to enjoy creating. Thanks for putting up your favourite mediums on your website.
I love how the painting turned out! The sky!!! Yummy! Yes, the movement in the water is perfect. I am personally fond of the little houses you do. I have a thing for houses in paintings. Always have. I plan to sign up for your class Sandi, but waiting to recover from Christmas spending.🙈
Thank you Sandi for another marvelous episode. I’m sorry about your cat allergy. I hope you and the kitties can find some balance. I’ve long wanted to take one of your classes and I think it would be an amazing resource to keep. I so appreciate what you share with us. Sending love and light from here.
Really interesting Sandi, thankyou. As a chronic illness warrior also, I am learning more to do this, I wonder- even though you are not painting for results do you find that work produced when sick has a different emotional tone or feel to it?. I loved your watercolour sketch particularly, It made me happy that on the left it looked like trees falling off a blue mountain 🙂 It was really fresh. Its funny that so much of what we do in art is about what is happening inside us, not so much the paint on the paper. x
Sandi, I so enjoyed this video (sorry you aren't feeling well!) --- your attitude is so inspiring (maybe I shouldn't have trashed some of my older work --- abstract isn't as easy as it appears) --- now I'm eager to start back to painting again!! (Looking forward to your new podcast!!) Take care and BEST WISHES!!
I would be thrilled to hang that abstract watercolour from your sketchbook in my living room! (Actually any/all of your work, but that’s a different story)
Sandi this is Bonnie, from NC. I enjoyed this class so much. How do you get all that great texture, it’s wonderful. Hope that your allergies are better. I am also loving the landscape class, thank you
At the 7:45 minute mark when you hold up your sketchbook: "would anyone want to buy these and put them up on their wall?" Yes! I've had lots of people ask me if they can buy my journals and sketchbooks. It baffles the mind, however they do ask!
You love what you love you don’t have to explain it to others 😌I find people always like my favourite paintings I do, less than the ones that aren’t my favourite it’s weird 🤣
That is my biggest problem Sandi, I got out of the daily habit of creating back when the craziness started a couple of years ago. I am having a hard time getting back into the flow. Stops and starts but not on a daily or consistent basis. I am closer to 'just do it' but maybe I haven't given myself permission to put myself first. Hmmmm PS I love your abstracts.
I was viewer 485 which is my childhood home address! 48 5th ave!! Is that like good luck!? Lol I loved this video! Those paintings are all really good! And I'm working on 4 diffrent paintings myself. I feel like I'm in the flow when I work on many art a time. ❤🤗🙏
It's not easy, but I do agree that sometimes when you're in pain, working on something you love (unless I have an absolute blinding migraine) can help as a welcome distraction. I've made some decent art when I'm hurting- but to be clear, I much prefer to work when I feel decent! haha! I really love these pieces, by the way. The sky and the seagull flying overhead might be my favorite bit! And oh no, allergic to the cats! Sandi, what a bummer :( My mom is allergic to cats and only discoverd this like 20 years ago when she was in her 50s when allergies just appeared one day. We always had cats and she wasn't about to get rid of the two of them (thankfully for everyone's sake!) so she just takes allergy meds and it works for her. But I found that switching to a non clay litter can help, like Feline Pine. A few years ago, my son had a friend that would come over for playdates and his mom used to say she was surprised she wasn't bothered by our cats. She said she had bad allergies with cats, but not mine for some wild reason. I realized maybe it was because of the litter I used. Or I had magic cats? I'll accept either explanation😜
@@sandihester Ah, I see! Then that’s not gonna be an issue👍if it’s worse in the warm weather months, it could just be their dander and other allergens like pollen that sticks the fur when they come in from the yard. Either way, I wish you good health and less suffering from allergies. I know it stinks 😷
I have a friend who is allergic to her cat 🐈 she takes antihistamines now and again and has managed well enough they are doing just fine I am also a bit allergic to my cat but again I rake beconese badel spray prescribed by my doctor where's there's a will there's a way love the artwork Sandi your vids are awsome hello to Cooper and the cats xx
Do you go in detail in your landscape class about how you achieve all the yummy textures in your paintings, with mediums or etc?!?!! I'm planning on purchasing as soon as the finances become available 💁😇
I don’t. I go into some of the mediums I use on my acrylics class. But my texture is built up with paint. Every now and then I’ll try something new and slap it on there but it’s mostly just paint over paint
You are lucky. My mother had to give up her heartthrob kitty that she raised from the dumpster with a bottle. She tried for ages to keep it but in the end the doctors told her she would die if she didn't get rid of her baby. She was swollen all over and her lung was barely functioning any longer 😭
I'm deathly allergic, so I take maintenance medication and have air filter machines in my house. But even without the cats, I'd have allergies; chronic allergic rhinitis. So either way, I'd need the machines and the meds. At least this way, I also have the cats.
dear sandi -- i might have an inappropriate question, forgive me if this is a wrong question to ask but i'm going to anyway. i would love to take your landscape class, but. the work i do is mostly voluntary work; it's about 30 hours a week and with the amount i do receive (in dutch it's called "bijdrage", so like, contribution; it's a small amount as kind of a thank you so i don't think "contribution" has the same exact meaning) i'd have to wait months before i've saved up enough money. probably worth it but (sorry for using this argument but i do feel it's true) i really feel the urge to jump into this right now. so, my question is: is there any way i can pay in... parts? like, a fourth every coming month? i know this must be like... i don't know, this is probably the second or third comment i'm leaving on your channel, ... so i know this is a long shot but i thought i'd ask. i think it's possible through paypal, i did a course last year where i paid a certain amount for several months in a row automatically... well. thank you anyway, i understand if this turns out to be impossible. so, again, thank you, and another thank you for all the inspiration you're throwing out there... your spirit is contagious. X
Kim I totally understand and I am so sorry that we don’t offer PayPal at this time. The fees are so high and we are already paying a bunch of fees from the platform we use. We are trying to keep the price down and this is the best we can do right now. The class will always be available so it will be there waiting for you I promise!
ive always thought the idea of 'archival' quality work for any purpose is just silly. Do we need art to last for 500 years? What's so special about pictures they need to last that long? Why can't we think about art like a car or couch? You have it for a bunch of years then move on. It's the institutional art world(and supply manufacturers) that has misled everyone to believe they need to treat their materials like a museum thinks of a rembrandt. 99.99999% of art in the never needs to be archival for any reason. Do house builders think 'hey, we need to be sure this house is archival, it needs to last 800 years!!' ? Houses now are torn down after 50 years and they cost hundreds of thousands. What makes a bunch of ppl who play with plastic paint pigments on paper think they are such geniuses that their work needs to be treated so precious? Its such a dumb game really, and ive fallen into the same mode of thinking like all artists. btw, i love that painting at 10:43, i think its just fab that one 'you don't like as much'. :)
Well said- every artist needs to get over the whole "wasting paint" misconception!
Did Sandi say the cats have to go???? I missed that...
Ya gotta just show up. :)
dear sandi -- i might have an inappropriate question, forgive me if this is a wrong question to ask but i'm going to anyway. i would love to take your landscape class, but. the work i do is mostly voluntary work; it's about 30 hours a week and with the amount i do receive (in dutch it's called "bijdrage", so like, contribution; it's a small amount as kind of a thank you so i don't think "contribution" has the same exact meaning) i'd have to wait months before i've saved up enough money. probably worth it but (sorry for using this argument but i do feel it's true) i really feel the urge to jump into this right now.
so, my question is: is there any way i can pay in... parts? like, a fourth every coming month? i know this must be like... i don't know, this is probably the second or third comment i'm leaving on your channel, ... so i know this is a long shot but i thought i'd ask. i think it's possible through paypal, i did a course last year where i paid a certain amount for several months in a row automatically...
well. thank you anyway, i understand if this turns out to be impossible.
so, again, thank you, and another thank you for all the inspiration you're throwing out there... your spirit is contagious.
