I have some Rio stories myself from almost the same period. In 2003 I was invited to Rio by my producer friend who was recording a Brazilian artist who lived here in Denmark at the time. At some point we were introduced to his nephew and ended up hanging out with him when the artist was busy. He also wanted to take us to his favela but at night for partying. I ended up driving us there and at the gate two guys started to draw their machine guns. The Brazilian guy started shouting to me in Portuguese and I started to slow down, to which he yelled não não, and I did understand that much. Fortunately he threw himself across the steering wheel, to flash the lights three times, which was apparently the signal preventing us from getting gunned down. During the completely crazy night there, with endless cheap liquor and literally naked women lying on all the bars, the guy's friends told us that while not the boss, this guy was high up. He had once gotten a ride to the hospital by the police, because his hand was injured. But the reason for the injury was that the grenade with which he had killed five cops had been thrown a bit too late. Crazy and interesting experience, but no, I also didn't feel comfortable for a second. When we finally left that night, they told us not to stop until we reached a different part of the city, and certainly not for red lights.
To any Brazilians reading this, I have to say that I know Brazil from a completely different side today, and the vast majority of the country is nothing like this at all. I have great friends in Braziiiil and always have a blast visiting.

Even if you have absolutely zero interest in owning any firearms, I highly suggest checking to see if you have a local shooting range close by so that you can learn safe firearms handling from a professional and at least knowing how to check and safely unload firearms. This is not only so that you know how to do it for yourself, but also so that you have the knowledge to spot right away if someone around you is not handling firearms around you safely, so that you can then ensure your safety, whether that may be by communication with that person to gain more information, checking the status of the firearm and unloading it or making sure it is safe to handle if a person ends up putting a firearm into your hands again, or by simply leaving the area if you come to the conclusion that it is the best way of dealing with the situation. It's definitely a valuable skill to have.
When you mentioned that your bandmate took some shots into the air I almost fell out of my chair. The projectiles will still be lethal when they eventually come down, especially with such large caliber. I'm hoping that nothing valuable got hit that day. What a crazy story, I'm glad you guys all made it through well and unharmed! PS: I hope you guys all got checked for parasites after coming back home, not only for local ones but those local to tropical countries to which we Europeans do not have any natural defenses.

Hi Jon and thank you for this frankly crazy story. Now listening to your story, I am reminded of my life from 2004-2006. It didn't have such disturbing stories, but it was horrible and depressing in its own way. And during those years, I actively started making music and recording on PC. It would be interesting if you still sometimes tell about your flashbacks nowadays.

Wow, that is an amazing story. You did the right thing as that situation could have easily gotten much worse, and a hat is not worth risking your life over under any circumstances. Hats are replaceable, your life is not - and as luck would have it, you got another hat later on. Regardless, I am glad you stayed safe, lived to tell the story, and also lived to share all of your great gear videos with the world over the years.

This story is crazy, Jon, even for Brazilians like me lol. Middle class in Brazil gets shocked with gun violence in the US, because it's not at all normal to carry guns in Brazil; but the middle class also don't usually go into the favelas, in which it is, contrarily, extremely normal to see guns carried around. It's like two different worlds. But also this type of favela is very unique to Rio, which is not at all synonym with "Brazil" haha. What did this Norco guy made you guys go through, huh... That was disjointed hahahaha
    All the best, man!

How many people in their lifetime have any kind of an experience like this? Very few. People who don't live in countries that have such brutal cities, towns and villages just don't know what being alive can look like or be like those people do. It definitely puts so much in perspective for the few who do get an opportunity to see with their own eyes how brutal life is for so many people. To me I think this kind of experience would cause most to come away with gratitude for what their life has been like compared to those unfortunate people. And with a determination to somehow find a way to help people in places like that who can't help themselves for fear of having their life taken. It's just awful what many people go through.

Crazy story! You never will forget such moments. Maybe you can tell us some funny stories...
I remember a funny story, long time ago, as I played in a band and this were our first big gig. As it was time to play my solo, a string braked and I showed my guitar my friend that played the rhythm chords and he was shocked. He had to improvise a solo during I grabbed his other guitar and at the right time I started with my next part of this song. I never will forget his scared face and his wide open eyes. 😱 🤣 This was an adrenaline push for my friend and he played the whole gig very well. We never will forget this situation and we learned that there is always something that you don't expect. So it's good to have a plan b, c, d...
Other funny moments are... if you singing to a wrong song and both don't really fit together and you can't stop...you have to be creative and at least it was a new version. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Cool story! That kind of trip stays with you for life. I think Brazilians especially just love to mess with people sometimes, not out of malice but more like a friendly joke at your expense. Which is probably a good thing when you are meeting with mob bosses and armed kids.
I don't think guns are something to be afraid of unless they are pointed at you, or handled by someone who doesn't respect them and treat them like they are loaded even when they are not. To be fair, I would feel uncomfortable around armed guys in favelas too, it's not a place where you go through firearm handling 101.
Like most Finns, I've gone through army training. You get to carry a rifle enough that you mostly just want to chuck it into the woods, because it's heavy and annoying to carry all day. But they are fun to shoot when you are in a safe, controlled environment like a firing range. If you feel uncomfortable around them, consider taking a course at a firing range where they teach you how to handle them.

I'm from Brazil! Right here in Rio de Janeiro. I don't live in favela... but some people only have this place to live. This is the reality for some people...
Do a rock performance in that place is not usual...I'm saing to you: I've lived here for all my life, and I've never played in a place like that. Because they don't listen rock too much 😂😂😂.
I'm very surprised that you were here and in these conditions! You are a brave man 😅!

    Hair raising stuff mate!
In my 20's i worked on an extremely remote farm in the Australian outback up north... with a lot of interesting characters. One of which, turned out to be an incredibly dangerous and violent offender who one day, after a number of disturbing encounters with this guy, had cornered and threatened to stab everyone with a hunting knife. He was deadly serious and we were terrified. Long story short: once the authorities were notified, we were immediately told to take everyone and lock ourselves into the most secure room on the property as quickly as possible, and stay there until authorities arrived.
A helicopter of armed police officers flew in, landed, detained the guy, but not after he demolished the unit he was staying in during the confrontation, and he was quickly flown out of the state... We were since notified that he had been on the run for quite some time, and wanted for stabbing a large number of people over several years, and across multiple states of the country. Still gives me bad goosebumps to think about. I used to work right along side this guy, on a daily basis.

I think nothing of it and we chat a bit. Since I'm out for a while my relatives come out looking for me and they see me with that guy they're like hey come back inside soon, I'm like yeah sure.
Then this man and me part ways and I to back inside. They're all looking at me and they go "you realize he was flirting with you right?" I did infact not realize that he was flirting with me, but when they said it, everything made sense. I'm a dude and he was like twice my age so that thought never crossed my mind.

Haha. Yeah I’m one of those guys. I grew up shooting guns. I have one within arms reach right now. I hunted a lot as a kid. Not so much anymore. But I still have a gun for home protection of course. But I’m saying all this to say, it is interesting to hear the perspective of someone who didn’t do the whole gun thing growing up. I can only imagine your discomfort to the shituation. You’re already uncomfortable being around a guy that is known for mass murder. And then you get handed not just guns but heavy weapons. Oh yeah that must have been near outter body experience. Hell, having grown up around guns I would have been uncomfortable myself. I would have also been reluctant to shoot it in close proximity to other people and children. Good on you for making through the experience!!!
I’m also one of those “infinite parallel universe” people. I bet that mob boss guy had you shot the second you held a gun in several of the parallel universes. But no worries. I was there in your place in many of those as well ;)

That's a crazy story for sure. I'm not fond of guns either. :(

Being around loaded guns in the context of a firing range *can* be fun, but it's not for everyone. Being around loaded guns in the context of them being handled by kids in the streets, speaking from experience, is never fun and it's reasonable to be scared by them. Glad nobody among your group was harmed on your trips to the favelas.

@@jorgea.9988 look and the real numbers. You just have to do a simple search on Google. We don't have guns. We don't kill each other for to colour of our skin or for road rage or for whatever. The police here is not gonna shoot at you if you make the wrong move or you're the wrong colour of skin. Have you ever been to Spain or to the Nederlands? We are cool a peaceful people. Obviously, there's criminality. There are now South American gangs, but nothing to do with what happens in America, the whole continent, not only the US of A, Africa, Asia. Search for the statistics. There is all in the Internet.

@@EclipseAtDusk that is reassuring but also concerning. It’s sad that so many people die because of gun violence in the US but the government will never reform gun laws because weapons manufacturers are extremely powerful and colluding with the former.
