  • So how much of a difference do reinforcement rings make on a DW Collector's series maple snare drum? Here we compare two DW Collector's Series Exotic finish snare drums. 6.5" x 14" maple shell and both have an outer veneer of almond. One drum has the maple inner ply, while the other has an almond inner ply as well as almond reinforcement rings. I tuned both heads the same and play some samples captured with an Earthworks DM20 on the snare, Earthworks SR25 mics on the overheads and an sE Electronics V Kick mic. I left the heads wide open but personally I would use a small amount of muffling if I were recording these drums. Let me know if you think the drum heads make more of a difference in this video than the shell construction.
Update: check out Part 2 where I do the same shootout with matching batter heads.
