    That was a great 3 part tour series of an old general store...you have a way to show us these great time capsules, like they want to be seen and the way you move, like your floating, doors opening by itself as you enter! Much appreciated work Oddie!

    Thoroughly riveting! I was just waiting for a little old man with a grey moustache, work apron, tie and shirt with sleeves rolled up to appear at the counter and ask what he could do for us! It must be so difficult recording these places, knowing what to film and linger on, so well done to Camera Girl! I could spend literally hours in such buildings, nosing through stuff and drinking in the atmosphere. I do hope any useful remaining contents and some of the period fittings find a new home somewhere - they deserve to. Thanks again Oddie :)

      If the little old man with a grey moustache, work apron, tie and shirt with sleeves rolled up to appeared at the counter...I would've gotten a terrible shock! lol - because I would've been seeing a ghost! I'll tell the camera-gal, she'll be very pleased! Actually we were many hours there - definitely soaking up the atmosphere; and but have to be somewhat selective in editing, to prevent it becoming boring. I'm not sure what will happen to the stuff, if the place gets pulled down, I guess they'll junk it. Thanks for your kind feedback friend!

    It would be super nice to be able to see any surviving photos from the store's heyday. This was an interesting look-around but a little late in the game. But photos of the owner with his neatly-arranged wares in his beloved store would sure be fun to see as an addition to this video.

    *UPDATE:* 16.8.16
    There's a sad piece of news regarding the old store, when we
    visited the town yesterday, we walked to the old store and saw that the
    right hand side window was cracked; and then to our shock & dismay,
    we noticed the glass had been replaced in the door - this means someone
    has either removed the old glass panel with the beautiful Gillette
    sticker....or someone smashed it. It left us with a heavy heart.
    Plus when we peered through the window, there appears to be water splashed around everywhere.
    We have discovered some wonderful additional material in regard to this old store, which will be upload in the near future.
    Here is the video of what happened to the items from the store: ua-cam.com/video/MKxJcDU2Y10/v-deo.html

      Gary Hardin
      Yes Gary, at least that, but it annoys me all the same that that sticker has survived for nearly a hundred years, and then along comes a........ (please fill in missing adjective) ...and destroys it.

      There would have been broken pieces on the floor, if it were broken.
      More likely the building owner has removed it. I noticed the air hose or extension cord, & ladder upstairs & the removed doors indicating it's being dismantled. The way all the shelves were being emptied & stuff clustered together precisely reminded me of my grandparents estate sale. Their lifetime belongings out on display to be sold. The store up front, looks as if the late owner had turned to try & sell the remaining stock as antiques/Flea Market. If it were thieves, then entire truckloads worth would be gone, & it would look a mell of a hess in there, if you know what I mean.

    Oddie, my friend, you've left me in complete awe with this three part masterpiece of video work. It was a nice touch to omit music so that the old place could quietly speak for itself. It would be a travesty for this place to be torn down and not preserved in some way after surviving the ravages of WW II, time and vandalism. As always, I wish you and your helper blessings from the good Lord and good health and happiness.
    William Charles

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 років тому +1

      Thanks so much William Charles, glad the videos were to your liking! Much appreciated. Yes I thought, as you quite rightly said; that I'd let "the old place quietly speak for itself" - Over the weekend I managed to find an old photo with this shop (or half of it) depicted.
      I will include it in my next upload. My next video is also in this town, it's an abandoned hotel.
      Thank you for your blessings - I wish the same of course to you and your kin.

    • @williamcharles9480
      @williamcharles9480 8 років тому

      ***** As always, experiencing your work is a delight and I anxiously await your next piece with the photo. I could imagine the many stories that have been heard by those old walls as the little general merchandise store fead the needs of its community. I wish that I could turn back that clock to the time when the old store was in its prime. It would have been a treat to experience its good days. Thanks for the trip into an enchanting era.
      One more thing. I remember the days when the Gillette "Blue Blades" were widely sold as was shown on the ad that you feature. I wasn't shaving as of yet, but I can remember when my dad would complain that they would become rusty at a quick rate. This was a time when technology wasn't able to get as good of a sharp edge on a stainless blade and the price of stainless was expensive then, also.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 років тому

      William Charles
      Thank you for your kind words William Charles. I wish I could travel back in time also to see the shop in it's heyday. I will soon be publishing an interesting addendum to the old store videos; we managed to locate a lot of the precious vintage items that had been removed from the store. We have filmed & photographed those items, which are fascinating in their own right.
      I enjoyed the anecdote about your father & the Gilllette 'Blue Blades' - there's a sad piece of news regarding that old door sticker; when we visited the town yesterday, we walked to the old store and saw that the right hand side window was cracked; and then to our shock & dismay, we noticed the glass had been replaced in the door - this means someone has either removed the old glass panel with the beautiful Gillette sticker....or someone smashed it. It left me with a heavy heart.

    • @williamcharles9480
      @williamcharles9480 8 років тому

      ***** And another piece of the past fades into history, but with thanks to you, it shall live on for others to see. Those who were appointed to do the job of repair (?) probably didn't give the old sticker much notice. Or the opposite, it received notoriety and the panel was moved to a private collection to be out of public view forever. Sad indeed with a liberal dose of selfishness. If that were the case. I guess we will have to settle with a nostalgic trade off. Your documentation of the old inventory. Thanks for your efforts in securing that. I'm interested.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 років тому +1

      William Charles
      I'm really hoping (and the thought had already crossed my mind on that day) ...that the window pane (& the all important sticker!) have been moved to a local museum.
      Although the cracked show window and disturbance inside the shop, leads me to fear the worst.
      I'm just glad I got to film the store at the right time; and indeed the"nostalgic trade off" adds balm to the wound.

    as much as i enjoy the history of this place, it truly makes me sad that no one thought enough of this old gentleman to clean out his possessions or anything. my house was left the same way after the previous owners passed away, but nothing compared to this. it really hurts my heart to see this, as beautiful and haunting as it is.....

    You've done it again!!!! Found another truly amazing little gem and preserved it forever with your video. I wanted to watch all 3 pts before commenting and just got done. I must say this is a truly wonderful little store. The kind of place where you could find anything you needed but couldn't get anywhere else. So sad :( that it's being demolished even sadder that the family either didn't want or couldn't keep it. The coffee grinder is amazing looks new. Also the bicycle in the back looks like it's never been used. Saw a lot of beautiful old furniture I would love to own. I can't get over how much wonderful stuff was still inside and how big the place actually was. I hope whoever owns it now is going to do something with all the stuff inside and not leave it for the wrecking ball too. Once again many thanks and my deep gratitude to you for preserving these amazing place and sharing them. It allows me to travel in my mind to the most beautiful places I would never see in real life. P. S. Loved your little picture show in the glass. Wasn't it the pic from the gentleman's mansion that was sealed for 100 yrs. ??? Have a great weekend!!!! Let camera girl know I truly appreciate her as well☺☺☺👍👍👍

      I'm not sure if there are any owners, but I intend to visit this town again and try and find out.
      Regarding what's left behind there, I'd say not, they had a sale after the old man had gone, it was open to
      the public for 1 day and they could buy the old stock at discount
      prices.; so what's left behind is regarded as rubbish.
      Yes that clip on the windows of the show case was from the French Mansion video - spot on! lol
      I'll tell the camera girl of your praise, I know she'll be delighted!
      Have a great weekend too :)

    The display cabinets and shelves are a treasure in themselves, as is the coffee grinder. Wandering around in there must have been a treat!
    We had a small general store in the “town” where I grew up. Not as much in there as we find here, but there were yard goods - mom made many dresses for cousin and me, and a small butchers area. Their belongs that they made...goodness!!!

    Really nice video thanks. It was one of those old knick knack stores. had everything you needed on a daily basis. I remember we had one in the city. I was born in well lived there most of my life, till now. The owner was a old man, who couldn't hear that well but you could always get a present to your mother or father cheap. bought those elegant coffee cups with saucer and it said mother or father on it one Christmas, I was 8 or nine then :) He closed in the late sixties. I could recognize a lot of the things, but what caught my eye, was the sixties vases orange and brown, they are in again hahaha. loved the coffee grinder. I don't know of course but the place didn't looked like it was plundered, more likely it was newer things, they either had on sale or the family removed it to use or sell. thanks again. who can forget the great videos of Mr Martins house :) the laughing misstres, Loved part 2 to. Just wanted to hold back on my writing a bit for once :)

      Thanks for your great feedback and anecdote about the old man and his shop, I remember a similar shop also as a child, like an Aladdin's cave for a kid! One thing for sure, these sort of shops are not found very often anymore, they've been put out of business by the big warehouse type stores. I found out that most of the items that were saleable, were sold off on a special day - this was after the old man was long gone. Then they closed it up again and what they left....is just left to gently moulder. Very astute, yes the clip is from French Mansion Unlocked :) "the laughing mistress" ...ha! I like that, sounds like the title for an old painting.

    A Fascinating tour! Loved it. Seems that more than one generation lived there at the same time. And visible were the upgrades as the years passed. Loved the floor in the upstairs rooms with the well laid floors in pattern. With the things,lights and such, with ladders, that someone had the idea of renovation at one time, but didn't get too far. The shop was amazing, seemed to cover about every need. The house and the shop were huge on the inside. Someone at one time did a thriving business there I'm betting. Speculation suggest that after the elder members of the family passed, and the younger generation, as is often the case, didn't want to follow in the family business. Had a sell off of all they could, in a quick take on what cash they could get, and locked up and walked away. Probably meant to sell the rest to someone, but an unknown disaster befell them and now there's no one to care for the place or it's disposition. That it's been plundered, I have no doubt. If it was here in America, I fear it would be in worse shape. I've seen some examples. Was curious about the tape across the rear entrance you passed under to enter. Reminds me of crime scene tape. Wasn't any hints of a crime there, was there? Lastly, it's sad that it just sits there deteriorating. It seems well built, and could be and should be restored and used. Another fine presentation. Loved the tour !!

      The shop had belonged to the same family for generations - started out as a bakery and ended up as a hardware store.
      If you'd like to see what happened to the cool items that were taken from this store before we explored it, then look in the description of this video, or my pinned comment in the comments section. There you will find the link, if I post it here, you may not get the message.

    Loved it!! Reminded me of what we called a ten cent store as a kid. That counter was awesome. Between the house and store they could of housed many family members. My husband is one of 15. I showed him the attic and we both agree his parents would of loved that. Where we going next??? Thanks again dear Oddie!

      Thank you friend as always for stopping by and the great feedback! Yes where are all those wonderful stores from bygone years? Ok maybe there's more range in those big warehouse style enterprises, but the service personnel know next to nothing about the products. In the old stores, if you asked the shopkeeper for advice, off he'd trundle to the deep recesses and come back with exactly what you need!

    It must have been a lovely store :) I bet there were also cupcakes (in this pyramide) to the coffee availabe :) And I've seen (near the coffee grinder) an old holder for newspapers that were used in cafès to read the big old newspaper format comfortably :) The (mainly) women (I guess) could hang out and chat :) While been asked if the salesman/woman has this or that item also in blue, he or she replied: "oh let me see in the storage" :)

    Fascinating to see items from yesteryear. There’s a UA-cam channel where they visited a store that has been untouched and have kept all of items sold in there since the early 1980s which was also fascinating. 😊

    Really nice. Probably the last owner closed the shop and retired, lived some more years in the house, then died. Therefore the most recent items appear in the house. The house was obviously emptyed, the shop was simply left alone.

    It looks like it might have been a flea market/antique store at one time recently too.. beautiful building and store Im very surprised no one has redone it and is living in it. Is it expensive to live in Switzerland. I would love to live there.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 років тому

      No, it was a general store right up till the end. After it was closed
      for several years, the townsfolk opened it up and sold off most of the
      inventory and the house furnishings.
      It is expensive to live in Switzerland, but it's relative because the income is high too.

    • @originalredneckgirl
      @originalredneckgirl 8 років тому

      ***** Thanks for the reply , In America a lot of old stores like that would be rented out more recently as flea markets/antique stores is why I thought maybe that one had, and with the orange sticker on one of the copperware I kinda that that is what had happened.. :( looks like I may not be able to live in Switzerland in this life time :( enjoy

      Yes you're right, this would make a perfect antique/junk store; but unfortunately the antiques trade is in a decline in Switzerland at the present time, so I guess it's not a viable venture.

    I am amazed that an abandoned property appears so clean (the store). Do you know how long the store has been shut down? Perhaps the most amazing is that thieves have not totally removed or destroyed most of the contents of the store. It must be a cultural thing.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 років тому +1

      I gather it's been closed for quite a while, but recently the local
      authorities had an 'open day' and sold off whatever people wanted to
      buy, and then closed it again and left it. That's why some of the items
      look cleaner than others, they were no doubt dusted & cleaned to
      sell. Thieving and vandalism doesn't happen much in country places here...thank God!

  • @2utoday
    @2utoday 8 років тому

    This is my first visit to ObsoleteOddity videos. This was a long one, in three parts, but it was interesting. Some of the merchandise is now too old to be sold anymore. And some merchandise would look good in a museum. The living area was most unusual with outside toilets with no toilet seats. Perhaps the toilet seats had been stolen by thieves. An investor with plenty of money could rebuild and restore this place to a more modern retail store and living area. Or, the entire store could be turned into a museum requiring a complete makeover. However, there is always a chance the building will be demolished for something totally new. Thanks for the look at what once was a thriving business.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 років тому +1

      Hi, thanks for your feedback. Your suggestion for it to be turned into a living museum is lovely; unfortunately the reality is that the town itself is not thriving - so other than businesses that people need for day to day living, such ventures have no economic viability...and as you & I know friend...money is the key word. Saying that, I have heard the village museum (housed in an inappropriate modern structure) has collected some of the better artefacts from the shop and put them on display; so we're heading out there today to see if they will allow us to film it.
      Thanks for watching!
