      He's just salty because he has that old school mentality that thinks videogames, even gtas, are for kids like cartoons as he says when he acknowledges Trevor, so he doesn't like to be recognized for something "kids" like, because he wants to be recognized for his career as an actor instead. In his mind being recognized as a videogame character or like he says "a cartoon" means he is not being taken seriously as an actor. Thing is, like Shawn Fonteno says, Steven was never a big actor to begin with so whether or not he likes videogames he should be grateful that a "cartoon" made him as popular as he is now.

      I understand both sides of it. I mean he’s basically played Trevor again on The Walking Dead and then Trevor again in Better Call Saul.
      I would imagine in his mind it’s hampered his acting career some.
      Like if he goes in to audition for a role as a CEO of a company and the casting person says “Hey aren’t you Trevor, the crazy guy from GTA, we can’t let you be our CEO it’s not believable that crazy Trevor is a ceo”
      Or for a love movie or for basically anything other than another version of Trevor
      So I understand why he feels that’s way.
      Michael and Franklin I haven’t seen get too many other big roles so of course they are still happy about being recognized as GTA characters, that’s basically still their biggest ticket.
      But eventually Trevor will come around to appreciate his role in gTA just like the blues clues guy or peewee Herman or any of the other famous one character actors who hated their famous role but then come around to being thankful for it

    I really hope Steven Ogg eventually accepts the recognition he got from GTA. I don't get the impression that he's a bad guy. I just think he doesn't fully understand that video games are a legitimate artform and not just "cartoons". He shouldn't feel insulted by that role. It's one of the best performances in video game history and I'm not sure he gets it.

    • @Illusionaire1
      @Illusionaire1 8 місяців тому +94

      I also feel that he doesn't realize that it's not Trevor that "hurt his career", it's the roles he choose to play.
      Steven plays some pretty Gnarly villains in most of the stuff he is in. He starts Westworld as basically a rapist. Liking or not these kinds of roles "mark" the actor and may severely hamper the diversity of roles you get asked to play. And that's just how the business is, many great actors got stuck into the loop of small parts as very fucked up people, and we love them.
      But I feel that Steven thinks it was GTA V and Trevor that typecasted him, and I don't think that's true. It's the sequence of roles he choose afterwards that set him on this path. Trevor is as evil as evil gets, but GTA is very lighthearted, caricate and humorous in nature. Westworld on the other hand is not.

The other roles he might’ve been offered mightve been tiny and not furthering his career or giving him opportunities to become a well known actor outside of one project, like bands that literally can’t make it after a huge hit throwing them into fame because nobody gives a shit about the other stuff.
      I don’t think it’s cool how he acts with fans now at all but I feel sympathy that out of all 3, he probably has the hardest time distancing himself from the character in his work and daily life so it probably fucks him off a bit now having to be Trevor 24/7

    • @Majuular
      @Majuular 8 місяців тому +27

      Yeah, I think that's exactly it. It's probably a combination of being entirely distanced from the medium (prior to being in GTAV), and growing up in a time when video games were seen as toys for children. He likely doesn't see the legitimacy of video games as an art form. He's a consummate professional who sees television & film stars getting a great deal of respect, yet from his perspective, he gets a bunch of weird man-children coming up to him and asking him to swear at them over some "nothing" project he did. Not saying it's accurate (at least not entirely), but it's probably the way he sees it. Instead of owning and embracing it without understanding it as he did when the game launched, the years have seemingly made him quite resentful of it. I can almost guarantee if GTAV was a springboard to non-stop work, he'd see it more favorably, but the acting gig is tough. Being Trevor or having a bit part on Better Call Saul don't pay the bills 10 years later, and based on some context clues from his interviews/cameos, I'd say that he very much hoped for more in his career by now.

    I believe the same. Steven in the past was an average actor, but Trevor catapulted him to fame, and unfortunately, he is recognized for his brightest role as Trevor. This is unlike his appearances in TWD, Better Call Saul, or WestWorld, where he practically acts the same in all his roles, that sarcastic and loud demeanor that is easily forgettable. I follow him on Instagram, and he always posts very peculiar content but also shares small snippets of projects he's involved in-flat and easily forgettable secondary characters from productions that don't have a huge budget. Perhaps the issue here is not Trevor but Steven, who doesn't try something new and doesn't choose powerful projects that could make him stand out. However, I don't judge him to be a good actor because he is.

      1. Trevor did not catapult him to fame. He’s known by the GTA fan base and that’s it. If it had catapulted him to fame, it would have gotten him good, big roles.
      2. Acting the same isn’t a bad thing career wise. Stallone, Schwarzenegger, DiCaprio, Ryan Reynolds, Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, etc all just play the same character. Typecasting can save careers. It’s great to have range and it can help your career, but also sticking with and perfecting a certain style can help you with getting popular with that specific type of role. People then will go out of their way to get you for those roles.
      3.”Chose powerful projects that could make him stand out” That makes no sense. That’s not how cinema works. You don’t choose your roles unless you are at least a B-list actor and even most B-list actors don’t get to choose unless they have a huge Hollywood cult following like Danny Trejo. He can’t chose roles. No one is going to just offer him a role, especially for good projects. He has to go audition. That’s how he got Better Call Saul. They didn’t even know he was in a video game.

    I respect Solo's take here, full on. I do understand Steven's frustration, to an extent. He's probably tried to land other roles and wants to be known for more than just Trevor. But his performance in GTA V is literally one of the best in gaming history.
    Not just the insanity and psychosis. But the layers Trevor has as a character. His loyalty, obvious abandonment trauma and the idea that he's playing up & *acting* crazy as a means to his ends. That's not a cartoon character, like Steven seems to allude to. That's a fully fleshed out person.
    I remember seeing interviews very soon after V's launch where Steven was actually really enthusiastic about his time working on GTA V. I can only assume that the years since then have embittered him to Trevor in some way.
    I hope he can remember that his performance is still loved and treasured by millions and that it isn't always so bad to be synonymous with one, massive standout performance. Most actors can only dream of hitting it THAT big with a character like that. Food for thought.

    Steven Ogg thinks he's too good to own his "cartoon" character portrayal, but he's not too good to take someone's money on Cameo and then not only fail to deliver on their request, but also use their time to throw his toys out the pram.

      @@cheekyhazelnut That's fine. But if we're being honest his roles outside of GTA aren't that remarkable. Simon from The Walking Dead is just a more serious and sane Trevor Phillips and his roles in Better Call Saul weren't all that memorable. Like Ned Luke said, he should just own what he's known for and make the best of what he's got. He certainly shouldn't be dissing his fans.

    • @cheekyhazelnut

      @@brsvideos8143 it’s really dumb to compare all his other roles to Trevor. He doesn’t have to recreate Trevor in all his acting roles. This is why he’s upset, people see him as the “crazy hillbilly” from gta and nothing else.

    • @brsvideos8143
      @brsvideos8143 8 місяців тому

      @@cheekyhazelnut I'm not "comparing". The parallels are just there between Simon and Trevor. And any actor who gets famous off of a particular well known role is always going to be associated with that role whether they like it or not. No point whining about it. Arnie knew he'd always be associated with Terminator so he just owned it and carried on. Mr T knew he'd always be associated with B A Baracus and owned it. Keanu Reeves was Neo from the Matrix for a long time and now he's John Wick (Or Johnny Silverhand depending on who you're talking to). It is what it is. If Ogg wants to be known for something different, all he can do is cross his fingers and hope that break out role comes along. He has nothing to prove. We already know he's a great actor.

    Love Shawn, and he do keep it real I'll never take that away from him, one of my favourite figures and his book is inspirational, but I'm going to disagree respectfully here and say Steven should have the right to disassociate with any character he wants. Yes it might come off as "rude" but do you really think the actual Trevor would do any different? The reason why he played Trevor so well is because he could probably relate to the character to some capacity. I don't see people complaining about CJ or Nico's voice actors feeling the same way. It is what it is, Steven is his own man, if he doesn't want to be Trevor that's his choice, and he loses money from that decision, so I doubt it's one he takes lightly.
    I don't like seeing the bad blood between the trio actors. All three rock, all three are amazing, one just chooses to live his own life away from GTA now. Idk what might have personally gone down, but I hope they don't hate each other.

He doesn't seem like a bad guy and It's completely understandable if he wants to be known for other roles and all but for one he shouldn't really be a dick about it towards his fans and sometimes this is just one of those things he's gotta appreciate for happening considering it's helped put him in the spotlight as an actor for others to see, He honestly should've followed through it like how Roger Clark did after he got recognition from his role as Arthur Morgan and everyone respects him all the more for it.

    He’ll come around at some point. Of all three protagonists, Trevor is the one that gets talked or asked about a lot in the majority of interviews you find on the internet and that’s because that man was such a powerful phenomenon on the screen. Your eyes were on him, even when all three got together for a mission, “what’s he gonna do next? God, just don’t do anything stupid!” So unpredictable, so chaotic yet he somehow made you love him. And that was beyond fantastic. It’s damn hard to breathe life into a character that encompasses the whole width of the emotional chart. In some cases in under 10 seconds. Extreme to the extreme yet remains tangible. But we had him! He was a damn wild unforgettable ride! And that’s because of Steven. He likes it or not, he is going to be known for bringing THE Trevor to life. And I am grateful for that.

  • @gabrielarkangelo

    Franklin's impression of Trevor for that one second was really good! Also, yeah, I also dislike how Steven doesn't embrace Trevor. I would never hear about him if it wasn't for GTA V.. and I'm sure he will never do a character as nearly as big as that. It's not because of lack of talent or something, because he has a lot. It's because, in the middle of thousands of actors.. Rockstar put this guy on the goat list.

  • @CatCooties03
    @CatCooties03 8 місяців тому +7

    I have to defend Steven though. I remember in seeing in previous interviews that Steven would get REALLY uncomfortable requests all the time by fans wether it be him doing something to them or like just being creepy.
    It’s not really fair for anyone to say “be appreciative” when half of the fans beg him to spit on their face or fuck them up physically. Where as the voice actors for Michael and Franklin they never had to worry about that type of behavior from fans. I don’t know I just don’t feel like he has a right to speak on it when his fan base is waaaay more relaxed.

    • @CatCooties03
      @CatCooties03 8 місяців тому +4

      AND plus not to mention he also got A LOT OF SHIT FOR THAT ROLE. I remember one interview where someone literally asked him if he was okay with knowing that his children knew he was a character in such a violent game and okay with playing such a monster character and seemed to try to down him for voicing Trevor.
      So I mean yeah he blew up for Trevor but he also got the shit end of the stick and so many people went after Steven when the whole “video games are causing violence amongst kids” because of Trevor’s torture scene.

    It's probably because he is still acting and it hurts his casting ability when everyone remembers him as Trevor, No matter what character he plays he will always be seen as a crazy murderous sociopath. Patrick Stewart experienced what Steve is experiencing. Patrick was annoyed that after TNG started everyone was saying “it’s captain Picard!” When they saw him.
    It annoyed him because he’s a classical Shakespearean actor with a long, fruitful and decorated career before he did Star Trek and yet people only seemed to care about Picard.
    But he said himself he realised he has to accept it because it makes so many people happy. He [Picard] means a lot to many people and to be mad at those people for being excited when they see him isn’t fair.
    So over the years he learned to accept that he *is* Picard and for many decades now he’s full embraced that.
    I think Steve needs to have the same realisation.
