What do you think I should have done differently?
Awesome Josh. Looks great. That's like the Cadillac of benches. I really like how you laminated the legs and rails. Looking forward to seeing the upgrades. Nice work!
Haha I think it’s far from the Cadillac, but I’m sure enjoying it. Hopefully in a few months I’ll have an upgrade video.
Thanks for this. I recently acquired a load of MDF from an old wardrobe/closet, which I hope to use to build a work bench like this.
Watch the 10-minute workshop. He demonstrates several novel ways to build, instead of cut, traditional joinery using sheet materials.
Quck simple bench. Good job. For the casters, I would have used lifting casters. They fit on the outside of the legs instead of under them and activate by pushing down on the caster levers so your bench sits flat on the bottom of the legs until you push the levers to raise the bench to move it. Then push the levers again to lower the bench to sit flat on the ground so it doesn't move.
That's an interesting take on a mortis and tenon joint. Never even thought about making it out of laminated plywood.
Thanks!
Awesome bench build. Love how you flip the old one out of the way 😂
Haha yea that was so much fun to film! I’m glad you liked it!
That bench will serve you well! I struggled with the same caster wiggle and opted to get side-mounted casters that are retractable. That way I could have the bench sit on its legs when stationary and lift it to the wheels when it needs to move.
Yea I was just looking into some of those yesterday. I’m going to do an upgrade video in a few months and I might switch to those then.
Great job Josh!! I'm looking forward to seeing how the shellac mdf top works for you as I took off my mdf top for melamine for no other reason than it was black. As far as power if you can do an overhead cord reel I really am loving that upgrade in my shop. Looking forward to the upgrades.
I can do an overhead cord reel! I’ll have to consider that. I definitely need to figure out something. I have to unplug my miter saw every time I want to use something else. Like my sander or jigsaw or anything like that.
Late to the game, but they have casters that raise and lower. That way weight is on the legs unless you're moving it.
I'd get a parf drilling jig and put some clamping holes in it. I do that with my benches. Just for the fun of it!
Simple sturdy bench. Good job. Plywood was a great choice of materials, since it will resist seasonal movement. I like that you made (instead of chiseling out) what acts like a mortise & tenon on the stretchers. Every bit as strong as a traditional M & T, especially once you added the screws. Perhaps a few purists will scoff at this technique, but whatever. The bench is finished. Now you can get on with making.
Thanks for watching! It’s holding up great still!
I believe you’ll have to get the dual-locking casters. Once locked they don’t spin either. Mine are Moogie and I purchased off Amazon.
Once mine are locked they don’t spin. The only problem is there is a just still a bit of looseness in them. They don’t fully rotate, but they can rotate just a tiny amount even when locked.
I like this idea rather than waiting for dimensional lumber to dry... did this hold up?
Yea it’s still holding up great today.
Well done and great video! I'm planning on going MDF for my workbench tops going forward. Are you happy with the MDF decision so far?
So far I am. It’s hasn’t been terribly long yet. I did get some glue on it the other day and it cleaned up just fine.
Get after it Josh...good video and nice bench. You are killing it with good content. Keep it up. You used lots of glue - not saying that is a bad thing. By the way, my batteries always seem to go dead when I am working on the last screw in a compromised position. Are you considering a vise for the bench?
I would like to do a vice! Just can’t decide what exactly I want yet. Still thinking through it for sure.
Nice job Josh! I can't remember who did the video, but I saw someone who laminated a few pieces of 3/4 plywood scraps together, cut out a few inches for the caster to rest in (kind of like a square "C" shape if that makes sense) and glued some anti-skid shelving material to the bottom. Reminds me of a wheel chock, keeps the caster from rotating.
Hmmm I like that idea. I’ll have to think about that some more.
I have read some reviews on the lifting casters whereby after a short time the metal on y the caster actually bent from the weight, even though they had a high weight rating. Also the casters on these are not large in diameter, so depending on your floor debris, cracks, smoothness , they were not rolling very well
How's the mdf and shellac holding up? I'm looking to do the same thing with the plywood/mdf combo!
It’s holding up great! I have been impressed with the durability.

Awesome, thanks for replying
How flat is your top? Mines kind of pull around. It’s out about a 1/6” in spots
Mine is really flat. Usually MDF is really good about staying flat.
If only plywood we’re not so expensive
Luckily this was plywood was purchased in January so prices were a bit better then.
@@GraffWoodshop nice 👍🏽
The Shellac doesn't cause the MDF to swell??
I haven’t ever had issues with using shellac on MDF and many others have had great success with it as well.
Problem is, currently plywood is really expensive and MDF.
You should update your miter saw station...
I definitely should! So many projects so little time. Hopefully I can get to it before long!
Ha. When you chucked the old workbench across the shop.
I had so much fun doing that! Broke the corner off the top of my old workbench but it was totally worth it!
POOR DOG.
Not the best way to go about it a work bench should be solid and not have that wiggle
Who wears their cowboy boots like that?
Me.
I can’t tell if this is serious or a joke
I followed Finewoodworkings article to a T. I used a better grade of ply.. I’m going in 20 years now with this bench! Rock solid.. I will say that this spring, I’m going to replace top. Easily done,,, So in short to answer your sarcastic question… No! It ain’t no joke! In fact, I have used this method to make several other different sizes of benches and machine carts!!! Incredibly strong and stable!!!
To the videographer! Thanks for a visual explanation of plans..
