    // ABOUT THIS VIDEO
    In this video, I make a simple DIY workbench out of plywood using a style of construction I learned from the wood whisperer (video linked below.) I'm not saying this is the best way to build a workbench, but it's good for a lot of people, so it's worth considering.

      Yeah. I don't know why. But I also feel like crying. I don't understand, why you made the legs stick out instead of putting the top on the top. But I am thinking about building a workbench like this for a few days now ... or another one ... more stable, more features ... you know the hussle. Your video convinced me to just do it. Thanks alot! All the best to your son and his best dad in the world!

    I really like this design, man. I'm in the process of designing my new outfeed/assembly table and this checks a lot of boxes for me. The only other think I'd probably add would be drawers for more storage.

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  6 років тому +3

      Yeah. A drawer would be nice. I didn't do it b/c I have lot of small tool storage already, and I couldn't go big b/c of clearance for the CNC machine

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop 6 років тому +2

      Yea, makes sense. Mine is definitely going to incorporate some Systainer storage, those things take up a ton of space.

    • @taycky22
      @taycky22 6 років тому +1

      Are you getting rid of the Polk table? I gave away my Polk build and made an oversized Torsion table with systainer storage last year. Best decision I've made on a shop project was to take it to a large CNC to have the MFT hole pattern cut out and add 80/20 extrusion to the perimeter. While the torsion was probably overkill, that pattern (and extrusion) unlocks so many work holding and assembly conveniences. Just something to think about (especially with your recent Festool goody packages).

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop 6 років тому +1

      Taylor C yup, I'm kind of tired of losing screws through the holes. Although, that does sound like it'd be sweet. Got any photos?

    This workbench has a lot of the simplicity (and shallow shelf concept) of Donald Judd's desk and work in general. How with simple and austere materials as plywood, you can do brilliant objects. Love your work Chris!

    I don't reply to many UA-cam vids, but when I do it's for a reason. This design is exactly what I was looking for. I needed a little more "beef" to mine since it will be my primary workbench for now anyways... I ended up dropping the shelf lower for stability, making the legs 6.5 inches, then gluing and screwing the entire thing together. Yes, overkill I know but I wanted to stay away from traditional. It turns out that the workbench doesn't move! there is no racking, is "light weight" and takes all kinds of load. Thank you for posting a great idea!

    I actually like the revisions you made to Mark's table. I built my own version of Mark's table about 7 years ago, and when I last moved, I gave it to a friend. Like yourself I needed it to double more as a a working surface I could clamp to, and I found that the low bottom shelf I put on it collected too much long-term junk. I still probably wouldn't build this version (still not for me, I think), but I do need to put some thought into building a new outfeed/workbench table. Thanks for the video!

  • @ryandraker9265
    @ryandraker9265 6 років тому +1

    Always look forward to your videos, Chris! Completely agree with your point about a workbench being suited to your individual needs, which may change over time. I don't have the time or space in my shop for a traditional style workbench, and my space limitations require the bench to pull triple duty: workbench, outfeed table, and assembly table. My modest bench made from sheet goods meets all three needs, and therefore keeps me going in the shop. And a side note: your bench set-up in your shop is what inspired me to make a few modifications/upgrades to my existing bench. Keep up the good work!

    I built the same thing for my workbench and I love it. I did add a piece across the front, to make the edge of the table flush with the legs so that I could add a bench vise, though. It's plenty sturdy and now I have tons of space to work with.

    Nice utilitarian bench. One thing I would have done is to allow for 1/4" melamine to top off the baltic birch. It is somewhat slick and glue doesn't stick to it. Then you have an assembly bench as well, and if it gets nicked with a drill or a saw, turn it over and eventually put another waster on top.

    Excellent video and build. Your reasoning to justify each area was well timed...and disarming. All I'm left with is "this is perfect for you ", and based on the narration I think that's what you were going for. At the end you managed to skillfully blend woodworking into your life philosophy, which was incredibly well executed. Best woodworking video I have seen in a very long time. Bravo, my friend. Bravo!

    This is a great design, about as simple and inexpensive as it can get. Just about anybody can make one of these workbenches and all you really need is circular saw and a 8 foot straight edge. The 1/2 inch lower top height for outfeed and the low height shelf makes so much sense to me. Thanks, Chris Salomone!

    I believe Mark's table was inspired by Norm Abrams. I watched the new yankee workshop a lot when i was younger, and was then inspired to start woodworking by Mark and other youtube woodworkers (one day I woke up and said, why am I watching; I can do that. Bought a lathe and started). I'm sure Norm took a lot from those before him, but it's good to understand the lineage. Your videos are great. Keep it up.

      stonehill865 You're right. I'm pretty sure I've seen Jay Bates build one similar, also referencing Norm. I'm sure I've seen April Wilkinson in a build video with another referencing Jay/Norm too. I've built a tiny one for my hollow chisel morticer. My video would be really boring though; Chris's philosophical approach make his vids so much more... I hear there's a car wash video next; or was that hair wash... looking forward to that :) ;)
