That doctor dident even bother to look at Leo's wound. He was like "Its 1880! What the hell am i going to do? leaches?" Lol
He didn't have to. A gunshot wound to the abdomen was a death sentence. If it had hit an arm or a leg the doctor could've helped.
😂😂
This part is sad but its brilliantly written.
Harold doesn't want to fight his son, he did ask Kid to drop out. And it also shows that while Harold's harsh words and constant insult for the Kid, he still respect his skill as he told the Kid "your time will come".
In the gun fight, you can see that they both landed the shots, while the Kid wants to show off his skill and aims for the head, he slightly misses it and only hit Harold's neck, while Harold's shot aimed is precise to conclude the victory. If the Kid aimed for the body, Harold may not have survived though.
I’m always thought that harrods shot hit first which made the kids arm jerk making him miss.
who is Harold? and the kid isn't his son
I think he meant Herrod.
He was a deadbeat dad who wouldn't acknowledge his son's paternity.@@philipmohlin3887
@@farimir120 I figure they shot at basically the same time. If Herod's bullet had hit first, then in the brief close up shot of the Kid firing his gun, we'd see a bullet hole in his vest, but we don't.
@@TheHeater90that could just be an error they never corrected in post
I love the level of subtext that Gene Hackman brings to the John Herod character.
In a script like this, he didn't need to be anything more than a dragon for Sharon Stone to slay. But he really makes it more.
There's palpable self loathing rotting away beneath his big, tough, mean exterior. Everything he does is out of an unconscious desire to destroy himself.
That's why he goes out of his way to deny the Kid is his son. Even though he likes the Kid, he doesn't want to be responsible for him. He doesn't want a reason to live beyond himself.
I especially love how, as big and mean and tough as he is, he sees the way Ellen looks at him, and is compelled to say some words in his defense.
He was the Duck of Death.
@@theartistworks LOL😂😂
yes! An excellent observation and I have seen this within men and women over my life experience and it really is a destructive cycle of the self if not acknowledged and overcome!
Absolutely, Gene is a highly underrated actor. You also make good observations about the scene, those subtle nuances are often missing in film today.
@@jackslater5886even the hat has a sub text. No one picks up Heron’s hat but there is the kid’s girlfriend who picks up kid’s hat.
Cynically brilliant scene.
Doctor standing 10 feet away looks and shakes his head ....and thus telemedicine was born
The rules are one must die. The doctor can not interfere with the tournament. If both are still alive they must continue the fight.
Gut wounds are messy and damn near deadly even today, with top notch medical care. Back before mordern medicine and advanced surgery? It was a death sentence.
You see enough wounds and you can eyeball a fatal injury without high level care and sterilized environment when you see one.
Well back then it was a tradition that one must die. Also, the doctors back then didn’t have the knowledge they do now and certain wounds or fatal back then
It was a stomach wound with Civil War era medicine. You didn't need anything more than a look to know he wasn't gonna survive
@@SWIFTO_SCYTHE yes and this is shit…. In my opinion herod just chanced the rules because he wanted kid to die
Gene Hackman was such an amazing asshole in this movie
Hackman also has the unforgivin feel in this movie too lol.
Yesss he was. Thanks for the commend 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I’ve seen much worse. At least he gave the Kid chances to back out and also, was he wrong about Russell Crowe’s character?
Right up there with Crimson Tide for sure.
Gene Hackman and James Caan. Undisputed AHs in Hollywood.
It turns out that accuracy is at least as important as speed.
This is how Vader versus Luke would’ve ended if he had grown up in the empire 💀lol
The dolly zoom and Dutch angle combo is just insane.
It gives a aense of dizziness, almost like an unbearable tension. And it's executed with such ease...
Top notch filmmaking.
Absolutely hated that part imo it takes away from the experience and makes me realize it's just a movie.
@@ThouArtOfWar0724 Can't please everybody, amirite?
Agreed. The movie itself is shit but the craft was nice; wasted on a crap script.
It's Sam Raimi at his Sammiest Raimiest! I've always admired his commitment to his style!
@@ThouArtOfWar0724because it is
i appreciate gene hackman's modicum of humanity. he gave leo plenty of outs and seemed a little bit regretful at the end. not enough for the audience to forgive him, but enough to confirm he did care about as much as he could.
He could have said the 'not my son' line while the kid was still alive, but he didn't. At least he spared the boy that.
He should have never challenged his father
When the kid reached up for Harod to take his hand in his final moments and Harod just stood there, leaving his hand empty. Cold AF.
I believe Herod may have contemplated taking the hand but the kid died too quickly.
Missed the quick time event
it was another element within the self-destructive and cycle hate that was eating Herod up inside that would eventually destroy him. Often times people become so wrapped up in that cycle that they don't believe they deserve to experience joy and fulfillment often contributed to by a trauma or event that contributed to their low self view and hatred.
"Along with the kneecap, the gut is the most painful area a guy can get shot in. But it takes a long time to die from it. I’m talking days. You’re gonna wish you were dead, but it takes days to die from your wound. Time is on your side."
You die from infection... is sickening
The wound looked like it was in the aorta, not the stomach. A ruptured or pierced aorta can lead to death even faster than what you see here. There's a reason on a shooting silhouette target, the 10/X ring are where they are.

I finally found this damn movie after like 8 years
When I was younger, like 12, I saw this scene along with one where he was sharpening a bullet or something (the old guy)
Nothing I searched for on google seemed to show me this but randomly through UA-cam shorts I found it. Seeing Leo in those clothes stirred up old memories
I honestly believe Kid did *not* do it for his father's respect. He did it because he was addicted to the town's love and praise. He constantly wanted to one up himself.
he literally says it in the film he wants respect from his father
He literally died while reaching out for his father. Figuratively, same.
He was probably faster ... but his aim was not enough
He was faster, he was just overly confident. He went for a head shot while his Dad went for a center of mass. Had he gone for a center of mass shot he most likely would have gotten off his shot first.
No his father cheated all the time
@@sweetburgers1 No he never cheated
@@calvinmiguel4405 Or the dad was faster and that's what spoiled Kid's aim.
@@Blaisem Dad was faster in getting to his intended target. Had the Dad aimed for his kid's head, he would have likely lost since we can see the kid grazed him in the neck.
I wouldn't say he was necessarily faster in this instance, just smarter.
I haven't seen this movie in so long!! I love it!
But seeing this scene now, dam that's cold how he reaches for his dad and he doesn't even move to help him at all
I don’t know which one is more saddest kid death or Jack death in Titanic
I cheered both of them.
“please i don’t wanna die” 😢😢
You dont want to die, but you accepted a game of death, all just for a father respect, sad story.
This scene kills me as a father. Especially now that I have my own son.
The only reason the Kid missed his shot is because the bullet from Harold hit Kid first and make him fail. That's how quick he was. The kid had no chance at all!
This might be the saddest movie scene ever. Brings tears to my eyes every time.
Truly, the more you watch the sadder it gets
Lmao poor sentiment boy. I laugh at this fake acting scene
Nice sarcasm bro
@@iuregreciano who? Lol
For me the saddest scene ever is the ending of Bridge to Terabithia or the ending of Pan's Labyrinth. I'm a big hairy male but both of those endings are guaranteed to get me bubbling like a cauldron. Fucking kryptonite!
The dual RAC focus on the 1 shots are immaculate
The cinematography was wonderful and so over the top. Great bubblegum tribute.
Gene Hackman never ever had a bad performance in his entire career
Herod gives Kid an epitaph "it was never proved that he was my son" - and yet, if you watch him walking away in the background, you may notice that he's dropping his hat, his gun and finally throwing away the bandage he's been stopping the bleeding with, all in obvious expression of utter distress. He might have been a cold, ruthless bastard, but man, he truly loved his son and never wanted it to end like this.
I think it was not love, but the knowledge that it was the worst thing he ever did.
He definitely did not love his son
This definitely wasn’t love. Did you watch the whole movie? He always blamed his son in every way. He was cold and cruel to him and he even chanced the rules as he saw how good kid was. And he joined the contest after he realized that kid joined. So there’s nothing good at him. And even the fight between father and son wasn’t fair. Court told Ellen in a scene that before the clock shows the first time of the hour, there’s a klick. Herod probably knew this but Kid didn’t.
@@miaeinhornfederzd "Did you watch the whole movie? He always blamed his son in every way"
I wanna ask you the same thing, because I watched this movie multiple times and I know that there was no such thing as Herod "blaming" his son for anything. You just made that up.
Yes, he was cold towards his son and repeatedly made him aware that he's disappointed in him - but that does not necessarily mean he did not care about Kid. Many people in the real world are also callous towards their children, not because they're evil nor deprived of love, but because they (erroneusly) think that they will motivate them that way. And besides all that, Kid still had much better living standards (Herod even get him his own gun store) and much happier life than other citizens. So it's not like he didn't owe his father nothing. He never had to go through the same hardships as others precisely because he was Herod's son.
"And he joined the contest after he realized that kid joined"
At this point, you conveniently leave out the fact that Kid joined the contest knowing that he will likely face his father and later challenged him to a duel with clear intent to kill him. I'm not even surprised. People like you just love to create a delusion of black-and-white morality (both in fiction and in real world) and will gladly leave out any redeeming traits of a person they label as "evil" and conveniently forget about any heinous acts of a person they label as "good".
Another thing which you conveniently left out is the fact that Herod was clearly unhappy that his son joined the tournament, repeatedly told him to withdraw (even shortly before their duel) and was openly frustrated when revealing to the Lady that someone (i.e. his own son) challenged him earlier than her. He never wanted to face his son. He wanted to avoid this. And when the duel still occured, despite his wishes, he basically had only two ways out - either shoot his son dead or let his son shoot HIM. Maybe it was cowardly of him that he put his own life in front of the one of his own son, but as terrible as it was, it was understandable.
So yes - in the end, Herod definitely loved Kid, in his own twisted way. The fact that he loved his own life and power a bit more does not change that.
"Herod probably knew this but Kid didn’t"
That is something you just made up (like that rubbish about Herod "blaming" his son) and which has absolutely no basis in the movie. At this point, it is clear to me you are growing increasignly desperate to cling to your sick black-and-white morality.
@@Genesivare Ok I mean everyone has his or her own opinion. That shouldn’t sound mean or something :) sure it’s possible that he cared about kid but I don’t really think so, because respect is an important kind of love and herod didn’t respect kid…
The doctor:
The dad was looking at the son like "look at this little fucker"
Little details, such as that girl picking up his hat at the end of in this very wide shot.
Such a powerful scene!
It's interesting people talking about Herod's "humanity" or "mercy" in this scene when talking about him giving Kid an out. I feel like people are missing the point that JOHN DOESN'T HAVE TO FIGHT EITHER. If he really cared about him, if he truly didn't want to fight/kill him, HE had every chance to step down if he wanted to. This scene does tell a lot about his character, it shows that his pride is worth more than anything to him, and further adds to what has already been shown about his own self delusion that he is anything more than just a killer.
Kid answered this. His invincibility would be gone. He is in a spot he cannot ever back down... or they will all come for him way harder.
It’s fascinating, watching people rationalize a man shooting his son dead.
Yeah, because you guys had experience living in the old west. Thank you for descending from the mountains, zarathrusta

He's just a LITTLE bit slower than he used to be.
gene hackman was literally already dead here, if it was for speed alone. the fact that it was not a straight headshot is the only thing that kept him alive, but hey, i understand he needed that plot armor
Watch again, Gene shaded the kid on the draw. This was just enough to spoil the kids aim. The kid would not have dared a fancy head shot as he would have been aiming for mass dead center.
That's the problem. If he went for the chest instead of the head, the movie would be shorter. And if Thor aimed at the head instead of the chest, we wouldn't get Endgame...
@@marabu78 This! Solid arguement! We can debate and assume as much as we want, but at the end of the day, that is what it is supposed to be. Can't have it any different!
Hackman shot first, Kid getting hit made him miss. That's also why on the draw when they show the gunshots it cuts to Hackman draw and shot first then the Kids. Like yeah, the movie required the villian to survive this fight, but this isn't a case where they made some stupid happenstance occur to let him survive
@@derekfishman3412 there was not even time for the impact of the bullet to change the way dicaprio shot. it was all so fast, they both hit what they aimed for, i just think that dicaprio was so afraid of hackman that he failed. the pain and the damage the bullet did to him only appeared 1 or 2 seconds after getting hit. meaning it did not change the way he shot.

okay… he is definitely an evil villain but all of his duels were fair fights, except when he was triple teamed to finally kill him in the end
I like how he was evil, but never over-the-top cartoonishly evil. He clearly was upset over this
@@leonpaelinck agree. and he was only evil to the extent of morality in the film. other than being a total asshole, he didn’t do anything different than anybody else in the movie. the kid dueled for fun and fame, nobody but the preacher has ever been forced to duel. actually, forcing preacher to duel might be the only real crime he commits the whole movie. the rest he is just “the evil ex gang member landlord that we all pay rent to” and he plays a deadly game that OTHER PEOPLE CHOSE to participate in
i think it’s a great movie that shows how much we can violinist somebody, but in real life nothing of what he did was worth an actual death sentence in modern time… but we cheer for the hero anyways naturally
Never seen this movie. I briefly heard about. But just this clip alone, knew it was a Sam Raimi movie. The whipping pan. I need to watch this.
