The first improvement I would make if I had to live in that place: spending a few dinar on a piece of pretty fabric to cover that horrible window. I don't know how to sew a curtain, but double-sided tape would do in a pinch to put up a fabric panel and conceal the tarp and duct tape. My husband and I live in a small 650-sq.-ft condo with a bedroom loft, but each room reflects our personalities: art, photos, cherished knickknacks. There's also attention to color-coordination in the kitchen and bath. It would be one thing if Foodie's 'new home' is just minimalist, but it's also unsightly and dirty with NO personality. A bunch of scented candles don't count.
