The rhythms of Vinnie Colaiuta!
It was a great honer to have an opportunity to learn and study with the master Gary Chaffee for so many years. As a full professor at the Berklee College of Music, I had the honer to teach the Polyrhythms class, that can be traced back to the 1970's with Ed Kaspick, and Gary as the teachers of the course. When Gary retired, he approached me and told me he wanted me to care the tourtch na continue to pass a log his teachings and his systems. To quote Gary on video " I want you to take over my systems and teach to others"
Working with Gary , I learned so many things and so many new rhythms. However, it was listing to Gary's more advanced players, such as Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and Jonathan Mover, that I got many lessons on the music applications of Gary's wonder crazy rhythms.
In this video, I am orchestrating some of the rhythms I learned from master Chaffee. We can hear similar rhythms played by both Steve Smith and Vinnie Colaiuta as they frequently use those rhythms presented here in inspiring ways.
I hope you investigate this book and check out some of the rhythms presented in the course. It is supper fun!
