I was looking at prices back in Sept 2020 and found that the A7R ii can be had for $1398, while the A7 iii is till $2000. That says a lot about the A7 iii, but I still went for the A7R ii for $1298 at Greentoe because I don't think it's worth an upgrade to go to the A7iii nor the A7R iii. Not even the other brands have something to rival the A7R ii, it's just simply the best bang for your buck Full Frame BSI 42MP 5-axis IBIS mirrorless camera.

I have the A7Riii but still love the A7Rii, and on most of my shoots have a double shoulder strap switching from one camera to the other so I don't have to stop and swap lenses.
Same I've seen the A7iii maybe used around $1600-$1800 and new still body for nearly $2k. Seeing the A7Rii still around $1.2k-$1.4k online in a lot of places so it's hard to hold out for the A7iii. I think the larger pixels, better autofocus, better 4k, and much better battery are worth it really though.
Great video! But you forgot to mention that in order to take advantage of all the megapixels on the Rii you absolutely need a high end expensive lens since not all lenses are sharp enough for 42mp. So that you have to add it to your budget if you are deciding on Resolution.
Is there any problem if I install a sub par lens? It will be there artifacts or something wrong in the picture or only less resolution? It's a serious question, I'm a hobbyist and planning to buy an A7RII
@@amermeleitor it will depend on the lens. Mostly a sub par lens will only offer less resolution, probably decent still but just not the full potential of the camera. Personally I love using really old lenses (film camera lenses with adaptors) for some things because they create and effect that is difficult to recreate in post editing. So if sharpness is what you are after, then a top notch lens is a must, but if you want interesting looking photos, then a really old lens. I would stay away from the middle as it doesn’t offer much but is still good for practicing your photography skills
Picked up an a7iii it low key gets better battery life than my d500. Granted my use case is slightly different than a normal photographer as I am constantly sending photos to my phone when I'm shooting. On my d500, if I don't turn on airplane mode, I get about 1200 still images. In the a7iii I was consistently getting 1600-2000+ shots along with maybe 20 or so short videos while still transferring maybe 100 photos to my phone. And I don't even have to turn on airplane mode on the a7iii. I really don't understand how they test the batteries to get the ratings. I had a shoot the other day and forgot to charge the battery. Charged it for 30min in the car up to 47% and got 1200 pics. Then transferred about 60 to my phone and still had 25% remaining. Quick tip. Star pictures while you take them and you can quickly flip through a few starred pics (custom scroll wheel under playback menu) to send to your client as a simple preview.
All really good points but I have to disagree a bit. While the higher MP is great I think the A7III tends to check more boxes off in resolution beyond that though even at lower MP. Realistically people who want a lot of MP are really specifically photographers wanting to have very detailed prints at about the size of a typical piece of computer paper to a movie poster in size. Most really large prints are actually rather minimal amounts of megapixels as you needed fewer megapixels at something being seen further distances away. A lot of prints can really easily get away with much less than 10MP. Also realistically some of the quality goes to Microns which also goes to the A7III over the A7RII with larger pixel size for better low light and dynamic range. When I look at tech in general I tend to look at what fits a broader spectrum in going forward. I think the A7III checks a lot more boxes on the video and photo combination at this specific price point. Much better autofocus and eye autofocus which both in tandem have seemed to be near the top of the line in the field. Improved video for 4K HDR quality. Touch screen, bluetooth, dual SD, really vastly better battery, higher ISO range, and quite a bit more. Realistically I think anybody looking at a camera would maybe more likely to look at the A7RIII vs the A7III. If they are wanting to spend more and invest in the RIII or even maybe wait for the SIII or save but still have pretty comparable quality for years to come on the newer A7III now. Maybe use that extra money from not getting the RIII or SIII when it launches to grab a G Master or Zeiss lens to go with it the A7III.
I don't understand why the anti-Sony crowd's go-to bash is "yeah go ahead and buy one of their cameras then a new one will come out 6 months later!" Look at the breadth of time between the releases of the A7II and A7III and of the A7RII and A7RIII.
After less than two years shutter reliability of A7III has been under the microscope as many units have been reported to have a failed shutter mechanism. The 7RII has proven to be a more robust camera, at least its shutter has proven more reliable, which is the heart of any camera, even more than the sensor itself.
The a7rii kit is $999 right now and the A7 III KIT is $1999. A $1000 difference. Would I be better off getting the a7r ii and getting a high quality lens?! I want to use the camera for nightlife photography and video. And yes I k ow I need and external flash as well
I already have the a7iii but want to buy another body so that I am not changing lenses when out doing landscape and street photography. I do not shot video nor do I shoot a lot of autofocus, especially when I adapt old manual lenses. I also have an l-bracket and lots of NP-50 batteries from my a7ii. I am therefore leaning toward the a7Rii. What do you think?
Island ProperTV Phuket if you do real estate photography, I recommend the A7rii because you don’t need the auto focus of the a7iii and you’ll get super high quality still shots with the A7rii sensor. A 20MM f1.8 lens may be good for lighting and the shots you’d look for in real estate.
Question(s),I've had the Sony A7 RII recently, actually traded it back in for the Sony A7 III due to a incident of the left side of the A7 RII getting rather warm..In your opinion,so do you think I did the right thing by trading the A7 RII for the A7 III due to current budget restrictions and the issue of a heating problem with the A7 RII?I'm looking at turning this hobby into a career,so I'm looking at getting the A7 RIII in the next few months to become my primary camera, with the A7 III becoming a secondary camera...I've heard that you really have to have the high dollar GMaster lenses to take advantage of the resolution quality of the 42mp sensors...What's your opinion on what I've brought up?I liked the A7 RII,but the heating issue and really short battery life kinda gave me a unsatisfied feeling due to the fact of cost of the camera...Any correspondence would be greatly appreciated,I like your videos and you seem to be rather reliable in knowledge on this subject matter.... Thanks!
Right now, a used A7Rii runs in the area of !,000 to !,100 dollars while the A7iii runs about 1,700 to 1,800 dollars used. I think that I might pick up the A7Rii to work with my A6400 and A6500...
I have both camera bodies and really can't tell a difference if shooting between f/5.6 & f/8....I have done several side by side comparisons in my studio with the strobe power set identical and using the same lens and tripod etc......Once I know what pic was taken with what camera then it seems my mind starts to find more detail in the A7R2 but think that's just my brain wanting to see that lol.
Great video, thanks so much for doing it. I was wondering, which one would be better for traveling-documentary making (video) ? thanks again!! kind regards from Mexico
After having owned the A7RII for over a year the one main difference on why i switched over to the A7III was because of battery life. I am mainly a landscape photographer but if i was able to squeeze out large prints with my Nikon D700 which was 12MP i know i'll be fine with a 24MP. That was my main worry. For my video work, the A7III is the better camera IMO because having to swap out batteries every 45 mins was a real pain.
The secret of getting more shots with the A7Rii battery was to turn off the camera after you take a few shots. Never leaving it on while walking around etc...doing that I was able to get 500 and more shots with one battery. I would shoot models all day and only use two batteries. But yes, I jumped to the A7Riii for all its new features.
The biggest and most important different between these two for a beginner like myself is just like when big studios film in 8k witch is total over kill but gives them the chance to crop the image without hurting the final products resolution. Basically, i'm getting the a7r ii because i'm a beginner and will make mistakes but the higher Megapixels will allow me to adjust the image in post making the early images i take salvageable. Yes the Battery life, Micro C charging, touch screen, higher ISO (Witch you did not mention btw) and refined auto focus would be nice but ultimately the a7r ii result in higher quality images, it cost less and can also record in 4k, i might as well buy a high quality lens for the money i save.
im the exact same as you! im not beginner but im new to mirrorless and im getting back into the photography game after being gone for 2 years or so! A7R2 and a top top lens!
I know this video is over a year old but I've just bought the Sony A7Rii and I love it. My other camera is the A7ii so big difference in pixel count. Really awesome camera and battery life is no problem for me because I use a grip with 2 batteries and I have 10 to keep me going. Great insight into these cameras. But the extra pixel count is what I was after for what I will use it mainly for which is landscape photography. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
@@siyashedhes9503 Hi. The A7iii is the newer camera but for me the extra pixel count is what made me go for the A7rii. It depends on what you will use it mainly for. If it's weddings or portrait work maybe the A7iii is the better option. Faster frame rate and better battery. But batteries for the A7rii are cheap and I also use the battery grip which doubles the battery life. I think whichever you go for you won't be disappointed they are both great camera's. Hope this helps.
Buying my first camera, will be shooting landscape, wildlife, weather, time lapse. almost no video at all. Strictly photography. Which of these two cameras would you recommend for that purpose.
big time, all those people who stuck with the A7r ii when the a7r iii came out will most likely upgrade now since the MP is higher witch gives them an insensitive that isn't just quality of life stuff that the a7r iii upgraded from the a7r ii
Great comparison! That was the video I was waiting for. How about the picture quality? Could you show a comparison of similiar shots with a7rii and a7iii? Would be great!
@@islandpropertvphuket4318 if you want to post on social media, then the first generation sony a7 would be just as good. I do portraits for people and even for me 24 is plenty. Even 16 megapixels would be enough for me

Great video, very well though out and accurate points. As a landscape/cityscape/portrait photographer I went with a second hand a7rii for the exact reasons you mentioned, that sensor. Really gives you unrivalled quality for cropping and printing. For live events or just as daily shooter, 100% would go with the a7iii, what an amazing camera Sony has created!
Hey. I have an 800D from Canon now. The A7Rii and A7iii cost respectively 2500$ here in Norway. The A7ii however, cost around 1500$, but maybe it's not worth it to go for that one. The Canon camera I own just does not give me the same feel as the Sony cameras ( that I have tried ), and therefore thinking about changing it up. I also own a Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 for the Canon, which I also have to sell. Tough life..
I originally bought the A7RII,ended up returning it for the A7III,still use it,really like it..Recently REacquired the A7RII,decided to add this for landscapes,etc...Do you still like the A7 RII?I like the play memories remote,it locks onto my phone and has the touch to focus, touch shutter and wont disconnect unless i exit the app in camera..i usually use a Sigma MC11 adapter with a Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4 Canon mount for landscapes, etc and im adding the Sigma 24-105 f4 Art, Canon mount to the mix for general usuage..Ever had any issues with the A7RII? Thanks
Can you shoot at 24mp raw in a7rii? I like to have the flexibility to shoot 42mp on certain jobs, but it might be too big for just day to day fun shooting..
Yes, you can shoot lower quality Fine setting etc jpg.....but not RAW. If you select Raw you then only have the choice of Compressed or Uncompressed Raw. Compressed Raw is 85mb files. I have not been using the Uncompressed setting.
THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED... But the first thing I Read was 5 Years Ago!!...and then I cried. I wanted to ask your opinion (I'm kind on short on time) on buying the A7RM3 and which lens....BUT 5 YEARS AGO!! 😭😭😭 You always made me CRY. SEE?? see you around 😞👍
Thanx for this vid... just got the A73this weekend and just when I saw the A7r2 new price, I started to wonder if I should have just gotten that. But then... with what you have explained... I realized all the new features on the A73 will be more useful for me... as it is more capable for general use. Thanks again!
I am also the 7r2 owner, version 4 feature for selecting focus point is really a plus and I don’t think it’s necessary to upgrade to a a7iii, until or unless you feel it’s too harsh to edit the 4000MP photo lol
hyuga. Same here! Got mine a little while ago for $1400 USD on eBay with only 1,000 shutter count. Super excited about it. No marks, scratches, or smudges
I also currently own the em5 ii and thinking of upgrading to the a7rii. How would you compare the inbody image stabilisation?. Can you get 1/5 second usable shots?
Right now, the a7riii is listed at $3599Cdn and the a7rii is $1999Cdn. As a nonprofessional still photographer, if I decide to switch, the a7rii is a no brainer. A7iii is listed at $2600Cdn
The Rii is still a great camera so definitely worth it especially on sale. I've seen several sales too dropping it below $1.5K which makes it really tempting honestly. Think I'm holding out a bit longer for an A7iii but I'll see.
@@zardosspinosa6944 From what I've seen the eye AF doesn't even come close at all it's just that good on the iii. If you haven't gotten either I think it's smart to go for the A7iii.
Having owned a A7 iii and now thinking of buying a A7R ii (because I sold it to buy a Fuji but I realised I made a mistake) Here is the truth from a user: The A7 iii Pros: great battery life, great picture quality, compact, and all the bells and whistles of having a mirrorless compared to a DSLR (better quality than my D810, because Nikon and Canon's lenses are now super old and can't keep up with the high megapixels, so I never really got 36mpx) Cons: The touch screen only lets you select the focus, can't pinch zoom in playback, the touch screen used to disable it self, having to go in the menu to reset it, the dual card slot was always confusing and gave me an error message, the thumb shutter speed dial is awkward to access and I always had to lift up my eyes and look at it to find it, the eye autofocus was great when it worked, but I found it would often not register, maybe those points were just on my unit or maybe it's happened to more people. Overall having used many Nikons some Canons and a few other cameras the A7iii has been the best camera hands down as far as picture quality, when I used it with my Zeiss 50mm F1.4 and Samyang 35 and 24mm F2.8. But... Now that I have to buy a new camera and the A7 iii is about £500 more, I'm really thinking the A7R ii would be a better choice as it has 42mpx, time-lapse, and the ss looks more accessible. Thanks DD for the video.
I can pick up a new grey market a7r2 for $450 cheaper than the new a7m3 I already own a a6500 I am only a hobbyist who loves taking pics of family my dogs and sometimes some in door sports which would you recommend Thanks
hello buddy I'm a huge fan of your...I have one question...I have nikon d5300 with 35mm lens. But now I want to buy a full frame camera...my purpose of buying a full frame camera is that I want to do videography of sports and short films...I got the chance to work with professional videographers and photographers...please suggest me a full frame camera my budget is $2000 and camera should have fast focus system while doing videography and photography...there are two cameras in mind Sony A7III and canon 5D mark IV... Thank you Regards Ajay Pawar From India
Do you know what the burst rate on the a7r2 is I while it's in crop mode? I really like the auto focus improvements, joystick, and alot that the a7iii brings. But, having the a 6300 and a6500 already with some great glass, I'd really end up using a pc crop mode, which makes me lean a7r series. Crop on a7 is like 13mp. I also own a ton of w batteries, so not a huge loss there with benefit of just 1 type charger. As well as the time lapse app as well as unlimited recording hack. Yes I know overheating issues, but still.
best thing to do to start, is find some lenses that fit your style and budget, and then choose a body that fits, and fits into your remaining budget. The camera will be replaced eventually, the lenses you will use much longer. Hope that helps a little Ankur :)
My friend i myself am an amateur! My opinion about the a7r2, wow thats a beautiful camera and idea for stunning travel photos, but i would recommend looking carefully at the usability (the buttons, menus and screen) make sure they are to your liking, the most important part of using a camera is being comfortable using it. Most of the big name cameras these day will be more than enough, but consider will you need to use it in the rain? are the lenses affordable, and available? Sony has very few cheap option for lenses, canon and nikon have many, and a very strong second hand market. Lastly i would say, having a screen you can see as vlogger is very helpful, if you plan to film yourself it maybe the most important thing! The 6d mark ii could be an option, although it is bigger and heavier than the sony, but its weather sealed, has a flip out screen, but not the epic image quality of the a7r2. I hope some of that helped, I'll reply again if you need anymore help. Good luck my friend!
@@kalisti2323 well that was very much informative, yeah i do need to research about the usablity and type of lenses that fits to my requirement. i'll definately look into the models you mentioned. thanks mate.
Cracking video: thanks a lot. I have an A7III and consider it to be a brilliant camera. I am considering buying a second hand A7RII as I have been using two cameras side by side for years. I thought I could get away with just one camera; but after month I am not convinced.
I use the two camera system and portrait/model shoots, as you don't want to stop and swap lenses. You miss the shot sometimes, and more risk of getting dust/crap on the sensor.
Hi, thank you for the great comparison, liked your comparison series. One quick question, isn't a7M3 has better pixel density at 24mp against a7RM2 with 42mp when both of them have almost same sensor size!! Shouldn't this reduce the noise for A7M3 that higher megapixel a7RM2 is immune to record? Thanks.
Both cameras are more than enough for most photographers an if you can't take great pictures with one, buying the other wont save you. For me it comes down to sharpness vs file size. if the a73 had no anti aliasing filter, it would win. if the a7r2 had lossless uncompressed raw files which weren't huge (or at least the ability to choose), it would win. Saying that though,, I do remember not being overwhelmed with the difference in image quality going from a7ii to the a7rii. Meh I suppose you need to have both in your hand and a good control of your GAS before you make a call.
OH heck. I remember that time of the hurricane. I was wow..... and in a self correction...misread. You are comparing the A7RM2....not the A7RM3....which probably will make me cry anyways in another of your videos...but I'll watch is (well that's a given) see you around 🥸😎🧐

so many people do this and break their tongue comparing these two cameras (lot of youtubers even mix the names up and then keep fix it with text over the footage)... isn't it easier to say 'a73' and 'a7r2'?- the difference is so clear ... stop saying 'mark'.... GREAT video, sir

Thanks I was on the fence between these two and this help bring the true difference to light.
I don't understand why the anti-Sony crowd's go-to bash is "yeah go ahead and buy one of their cameras then a new one will come out 6 months later!" Look at the breadth of time between the releases of the A7II and A7III and of the A7RII and A7RIII.
Yeah every update are amazing not like canon.. They get new camera that's barely any improvement to the older one.
And yes I k ow I need and external flash as well
Where'd you see it for $999 ?! That's a steal !
Very informative. Thank you so much!
A7rii has dropped since this video. Now $1600. Even more worth it if you need those extra MP ☺️
whats better for stills? I do real estate photography, is the low light still good on the 2 vs 3? Thanks !
@@coreycollinsm Thank you Corey!
maybe I'll do that and wait for the upgrade in two year... ;)
Bought one 2 weeks ago for $1000 basically new! Love it
Does the sony a7 rii has an Apsc Mode for these type of lenses or the crop on Full Frame lenses?
I think it does. You end up with 18mp on the a7rii and 10mp on the a7iii
ill be keeping my A7r2 !!!
Why not just buy a battery grip for the a7rii?
I see this was from a month ago. You can get the A7RIII for $400 more on www.42ndstreetphoto.com. Just FYI

Which one would you recommend for fashion photography?
i recommend u to go for Sony a7 iii, as this one is specially made for Fashion and Landscape photography..
Is the same on video? documentary, videoclip, maybe shortfilms
Thanks for sharing 👍👍
dave perrin i’m convinced to buy a7iii but as i’ve watched this video and have read your comments .. ohhh i’m confused now haha
So what have you finally ended up with? Mark lll or 7rll?
I intend to use the camera for food, automotive and watches photography which one would you recommend?
You didn't pay attention to the video. You're not a landscape or architectural photographer.
Buying my first camera, will be shooting landscape, wildlife, weather, time lapse. almost no video at all. Strictly photography. Which of these two cameras would you recommend for that purpose.
Just bought mine used from a friend with only 11k shutter count for $1,000 super excited for the upgrade from my A7RII
It sounds like the a7iii, just based on the autofocus, is a good deal for candid/street/photojournalist shots.
Street photographers are zone focusing.
That's exactly what I needed to make up my mind.
Thanks for the great comparison!!!
How much will the price drop on both of these in September?
big time, all those people who stuck with the A7r ii when the a7r iii came out will most likely upgrade now since the MP is higher witch gives them an insensitive that isn't just quality of life stuff that the a7r iii upgraded from the a7r ii
It's 2023 and I just bought a a7r ii for 650$ on ebay.. with only 3,000 clicks.... Couldn't bring myself to spend an extra 1000$ for a a7r iii.
Amazing camera, especially for that price
Great comparison! That was the video I was waiting for. How about the picture quality? Could you show a comparison of similiar shots with a7rii and a7iii? Would be great!
A7rii is gonna have better picture quality. It has 42mp vs 24.
@@squirreldemon3506 > if one is posting on Utube or Fb, social media, would the 2 be as good or same as 3?
@@islandpropertvphuket4318 if you want to post on social media, then the first generation sony a7 would be just as good. Good job on your video, what Nikon mirroless in the Z line up would you compare the Sony A7III
How does the eye auto focus compare?
A7ii is very badly reviewed. Don't get that one lmao.
The best comparison!! Thank you! Regards from Chile!
Which one will be best for low light photography?
For low light, a7iii hands down.
A7 RII’s layout is similar to my A6500’s layout
personal opinions for those who have worked with both should i just go a7lll?
Thanks
Which camera do you suggest for Real Estate photography?
either one will be fine. It really depends on your budget.
Does the same shutter release cable work in both?
You have a great voice for this kind of stuff
You didn’t even mention the A7III greatest strength-the higher ISO.
Thanks for the video!...and I hope you have recovered from Hurricane Matthew...

I wouldn't unless you really need the new fearures.
I am also the 7r2 owner, version 4 feature for selecting focus point is really a plus and I don’t think it’s necessary to upgrade to a a7iii, until or unless you feel it’s too harsh to edit the 4000MP photo lol

The Rii is still a great camera so definitely worth it especially on sale. I've seen several sales too dropping it below $1.5K which makes it really tempting honestly. Think I'm holding out a bit longer for an A7iii but I'll see.

Having owned a A7 iii and now thinking of buying a A7R ii (because I sold it to buy a Fuji but I realised I made a mistake) Here is the truth from a user:
The A7 iii
Pros: great battery life, great picture quality, compact, and all the bells and whistles of having a mirrorless compared to a DSLR (better quality than my D810, because Nikon and Canon's lenses are now super old and can't keep up with the high megapixels, so I never really got 36mpx)
Cons: The touch screen only lets you select the focus, can't pinch zoom in playback, the touch screen used to disable it self, having to go in the menu to reset it, the dual card slot was always confusing and gave me an error message, the thumb shutter speed dial is awkward to access and I always had to lift up my eyes and look at it to find it, the eye autofocus was great when it worked, but I found it would often not register, maybe those points were just on my unit or maybe it's happened to more people.
You are a very well spoken person

Senson Pan a7rii in that case... as long as it’s new and sealed
Very informative
Do you know what the burst rate on the a7r2 is I while it's in crop mode?
I really like the auto focus improvements, joystick, and alot that the a7iii brings. But, having the a 6300 and a6500 already with some great glass, I'd really end up using a pc crop mode, which makes me lean a7r series. Crop on a7 is like 13mp. I also own a ton of w batteries, so not a huge loss there with benefit of just 1 type charger. As well as the time lapse app as well as unlimited recording hack. Yes I know overheating issues, but still.
I'm here from 6 years in the future to tell you the a73 and a7r3 are only like $100 diference in price now
These beast are so awesome 😇😇 I am still a beginner, what will be good option for a beginner-intermediate photographer like me 😉
best thing to do to start, is find some lenses that fit your style and budget, and then choose a body that fits, and fits into your remaining budget. The camera will be replaced eventually, the lenses you will use much longer. Hope that helps a little Ankur :)
@@kalisti2323 hey kalisti
