We used Early US History this year and LOVED it! It was phenomenal, and I love that we made it our own! I added hundreds of picture books and we went on so many rabbit trails! It was amazing!

Make a timeline of events as you learn American history this year then when you do world history place that timeline within the first and your kids can still see the connection as they learn!

I used this curriculum with my 5th grader this year. He's more of a visual learner, so this was perfect for him. We both loved it. We added lots of rabbit trail books and chapter books. We actually used HOD's Bigger Hearts science books along with it because it covered science in Colonial times and the pioneer days. We also choose books set of in that time period for his reading this year, pulling some from the HOD lists. We loved The Year of Miss Agnes. We read all five books of the Sarah, Plain, and Tall series, at his request. He really loved them. So many things just came together for him.
Next year we're using Biblio Plan Ancient Days. We plan to read a lot of chapter books to go along with it. I'm considering getting the BFB Ancients guide to use as reference though. The struggle is real and I totally understand.

You should really look at how Charlotte mason does history. She encourages you to do your homeland for form 1 then add on British and ancients in form 2 which is 4-6th. But ambleside online would be a good guide for you to see what books they lay out. A gentle feast is also great and covers many books that beautiful feet books covers but just dispersed differently.

We’ve used the first two years of Biblioplan and have really enjoyed it. We’ll be using year 3 next year which is early modern and year 4 is modern. Year 3 and 4 cover world history and US history together. So, it does exactly what you were talking about and covers what was going on in US and in world at the same time.

We are going to be doing this next year as well. And I got the first year of American history (d) from sonlight for my oldest. So I’m really excited to see how you incorporate some of those books as well. I’ve really enjoyed seeing your videos on beautiful feet. This will be our first year trying them out

Thank you so much for that free shipping code! I want to try to find most of my books 2nd hand or at the library - but I wanted to get the D'Aulaire pack from them and it wasn't enough to get free shipping, so your code helped so much! Good luck this year!

You'll have to keep us updated on how this is going over the course of your year! We are coming from Abeka as well to get a more literature based style of curriculum. I thought about doing Beautiful Feet, but I went with Notgrass History and will be trying to make that a more independent style since I'm working full-time in the office. I'm curious if Beautiful Feet can be done independently as well. Did you look into Notgrass History? We're doing the America the Beautiful, so I might add some of the books recommended by Beautiful Feet based on the timeline to add as bonus work for their independent reading. Hmmmm....so many wonderful options! Totally geeking out on all the curriculum!

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler

I did! Every year I look into notgrass and WANT it to work, because everyone raves about it. Just hasn’t worked out for us yet, maybe one year! I think BFB could be done independently depending on how old your child is and how well they can read on their own

Wow what a great option for U.S. history! I agree there are so many good options, its hard to choose! I'd love to see (next year) a "day in the life" using this curriculum to see how you guys use it. Literature based curriculum is so much more interesting and helps the history come to life!
A solition to the world history dilemma may be getting one of those DK books that has a history timeline, that way you can look back at what was going on around the world at those times, and you can briefly discuss it. 😊

A good book to cover all areas over the same period is Abraham Lincoln’s World. So it starts with his life but also goes into issues all around the world and flips back and forth between stories. They also have George Washington’s World and a couple others.

Genevieve Foster’s books are excellent for connecting all parts of the world during different parts of the historical timeline. Some of the titles are: The World of Capt. John Smith, Abraham Lincoln’s World, George Washington’s World, and a few others.

@@thepracticalhomeschooler brilliant. Thank you for the planning sheet, looks a great plan. As someone else said here in the comments, I really like that you have planned for the rabbit trails. We use a lot of Sonlight and Bookshark programs, and without a schedule I know I could get off track. I decided for my boys Sonlight d & e looked too heavy, so to switch to BFB early US history primary looks so much more suitable and enjoyable, and we can still enjoy some of the books from those levels which I have already selected that will be ok for my younger, child who’s 8. Thanks again for sharing and making these videos, they are so helpful.

History has always been my Achilles heel of academics. I am SO not interested in history. I’ve never liked it through school and I am honestly delaying teaching it as long as possible lol 🤦‍♀️ Thankfully my kids are only 1st grade this year, so I feel like I can comfortably delay it for another year.
