      Hi from no Druids about- yes, it is THAT ODDBALL, NIGHTHAWK AT TOM WAITS' DINER, I really enjoyed that story. For me it conjured up images from a favorite oldie but goodie, ALFIE, with Michael Caine and Jane Asher and didn't the inimitable Cilla Black sing the song- Alfie- loved Cilla and Dusty Springfield and Sandi Shaw- Brit ladies with a dash of Billie Holiday- if I could write ghost stories music and musicians would be a theme- what is the difference between a theme, a meme and a conceit? Need to try to locate "How To" writing guides from college and university- seems like another woman's life. Sorry, up at 2am Ontario time- not unusual for me- if you'll pardon my wording- UA-cam gets on my case- I seemed to have lived my life, "ass backwards" - ALFIE, when our protagonist is sitting sipping tea being eye-balled by the lorry driver I replaced the joint at times with Michael Caine trying to pick up waifish Jane Asher- not that your story isn't descriptive- it is. Back to Oliver Sacks- no there's a brain I'd love to look about in- his dreams, day and night, his fantasies and his I.Q. I was trying to find something on reincarnation and the paranormal- he was interested in everything, wasn't he? Music precluded language- but of course! Doesn't surprise me- planning to re-read, Musicophilia- buy it. I used to have severe panic attacks and my safe place was our old library- the librarians all knew me but the city remodeled it and of course " new" tech- I still owe them, 1.00 and I doubt my card is good, and password- forget it! Books are an abominable price now- and I suspect the author doesn't reap a just reward for hard work...Are you adept in the other arts? I ask because I am nosy! No, it's just that the few writers I've met, could paint and were musical too- my "perfect" life once was, photo journalist then travel writer- but I of course romanticized that job- as a kid, never wanted to do the trad. stuff, get married, have 2 kids, 2 cars, 2 pets etc and be housewife- unless I WAS - SWEEP THE CAPE! UNDER COVER OF DAY, A WRITER! I have no imagination though and on all the drugs for depression and anxiety and then the ones for the side effects/affects- always get that wrong too, a human maracas! One last item been bothering me- I didn't mean to describe my imagined version of Jasper as looking like Edgar Allen Poe! A sort of odd looking little man- nope....Can we expect an original anytime soon? I probably shouldn't say this because not being well, went to see "Dracula" yesterday, bloodwork at the clinic, technician looked like Tom Waits! I wish....I haven't been able to really enjoy, a master, M.R. James- one story in particular rather bored me! Until I decided after months of dithering, Seaton's Aunt- now it's a favorite! Your interpretation and all his tales- Time for some caffeine, my cat, Moonfinn, ( yes, Frank Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit!?) a Siamese "thug" says, "cheerio Jasper" she just finished her late night snack of dog food...
      Namaste ( any ideas as to how to get Putin and Company out of The Ukraine? Playing B.B Gabor's, Nyet Nyet, Soviet hasn't worked-

    A cold captivating tale. As someone who lives in Northern Minnesota, I was immediately taken in & transported by your effective, complex, & keen story production. The part where the protagonist gets up to use the bathroom, & the sound of water splattering in a basin is heard:. I was like, did Jasper really just... & it's revealed to be him washing his hands... Brilliant & funny!! It's touches like that which make the listener realize how much work goes into your story narrations.. Not to mention the varying music, sound effects, & the subtle editing/mixing (and of course, the one-of-a-kind voice recitation), this is the stuff that rivals Hollywood😉! Oscar-nominated, indeed!

    • @EnCryptedHorror
      @EnCryptedHorror  2 роки тому +7

      Haha! I'm not sure if I fully understand it, but then I don't understand fully a lot of "strange fiction". I think the intention is sometimes that you shouldn't understand it. However, my interpretation (which may not be what the author intended) is this...
      SPOILERS...
      Reserved young man is recognised by superior at work as being cut from the same cloth as him - i.e. a bit of a "cold fish" as it were - and gets invited to his home on a weekend.
      When he gets there, it increasingly looks as if he's being recruited into some kind of religious cult - a cult that worships the cold and frost, instead of the usual sun-worshipping, and that anticipates an imminent ice age apocalypse for humanity (which its members will be prepared for). He is told that there can be six members of this arm of the snowflake cult, one for each room of the house, but they are looking for a replacement sixth member. When he goes upstairs and comes out of the bathroom he sees that a bedroom door has been pushed open, allowing him to see a fridge with its door open, chilling the room. The implication I took is that members of the cult not only worship at these fridges but may actually occupy them (perhaps the sixth member died of cold in such a fridge, perhaps there is a fridge in each bedroom, and maybe that's why Edith is so slow in appearing...).
      The young man is sufficiently creeped out so makes his excuses and leaves, but the cold has got into his bones. Even the bus fare in his pocket has turned frosty. But he thaws out among other people and, when he gets home, his experience of Bentley's chilly worldview seems to have imbued him with a new longing for warmth and human companionship.

      @@EnCryptedHorror Thank you for taking the time to give your take on it.
      I thought the fridge, conveniently deprived of shelves and such, was used to shove poor buggers in to as sacrifice to their 'Ice God'. ❄️
      The sense of relief as he started moving away from the house and warming up again was the only thing in the story I absolutely understood and felt.
      I think this needs another listen now that I have some extra info.

Monday morning, dark still and thanks to you, Master L'Estrange, I feel, if brave enough peering out my beveled glass front door window this street will have morphed into the claustrophobic, gloomy, "Gothic" Queen Ann, Shingle Style, as such houses are called in my little corner of the world- very attractive, spacious and often painted in cheerful hues- these houses could easily be the subject of another story....I digress...back to points more salient, ie The Story...Namaste

I am so excited because I looked to see how old it was and I just saw that it was new!!!! Cannot wait to listen, but I don’t usually listen to horror when going to sleep because of nightmares- when I do get nightmares, they tend to be sleep paralysis one’s! This is what happens when you over subscribe and maybe you posted it at a later hour so as to catch the American listeners. I really have to unsubscribe to a few channels! Very clever- what isn't included makes not one but two stories- the mundane is made malevolent by odd- I can't explain- nor do I want to inadvertently put "a spoiler" out. Certainly a different take on my favorite season! And snow- there are a few tales in the horror genre which do so, right? I think you've done The Snow? And there's a contemporary story in which snow people are "at it" when the lights go out and Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Public, go to bed hibernate as it were, video games have replaced books and candles...Thank you for a break from the common place! Still dark here thanks to the INHO, stupidity of bureaucracy- changing last year's "change" -the clocks! Despondency gets one nowhere though. You watch the animals, squirrels if you lucky to live within a "wildlife" zone still. I feel such compassion for those affected with S.A.D. even in summer, those brilliant watercolor sunrises- think Turner's use of light, how he had the ability to put "glow" into the sky- those mornings which before climate change were still "crisp" if you lived where I was born- those who love to fish are dressed in their peculiar waders etc, can loaded- everywhere YELLOW. Just the opposite to this story- London, which I try to travel too via TV and film seems so colorful, neon signs everywhere, Soho, probably not how I imagine it- once a mini "sin" city- I'll check out this author- such a poetic title, building up the expectations- won't spoil it. Gave me ideas for several stories, pastels or photos- if one was artistic- Master Strange, your stories esp "Visiting Hours" are as good or better than much that's published and lauded, most of the time unwarranted accolades- my most recent purchase- money is tight but the hype was irresistible so....I want a refund- I wasn't expecting The Master and Margarita, Mikhail Bulgakov, BUT THE HYPE SUGGESTED A CONTEMPORARY STORY, ALMOST ITS MATCH! No wonder TV and film too sadly are pointless so often- for a generation that spends so much time on SELF, character is left unexamined- pardon me, I did it again- join a book club says therapist! Yes? And get kicked out! And I feel caught between ages- insert LOUD, RASPY, "YUP" - Jack Russell "morning chant bark" good thing as I feel like....oh yeah it's Monday....I wish I was able to go to a job....Namaste ( write that novel) Your annoying "loonie" number 1 fan from The Frozen North. An empty freezer for those treasured tomes...I take back 84 Charring Cross Road! INHO awful, most of it...missing- and with such a cast! Shameful! The "zoo" is up. Have a most excellent day. Say a prayer for my brain will you? Seriously, something is very wrong and I've been avoiding all those tests- seems to amount to yet another damnable pill...

      Re: Soho, London. I think London is a city that gets pretty fair treatment in films and TV. Soho can be quite neon, and the city still has an energy and character that I enjoy whenever I visit. The suburbs beyond it however can be every bit as unnerving as this story suggests...
