Now I am what one would call OBSESSED with Ed, and I personally think everything he does is perfect. This is a great cover, but in NO way better than the original. No one can touch it, the emotion Hozier brings to it can not be matched.
okay so i’ve been scrolling through these comments and it’s honestly irritating me a little bit. ed sheeran doesnt have to match up to hozier’s skill. they’re two completely different artists, different styles, different voices. of course ed is gonna make this song his own and put his own spin on it- he’s a naturally fast singer. the rasp and grain in his voice makes this cover so, so very good. for the people saying that hozier sung this better- OF COURSE HE DID! it’s his song!! this is HOZIER’S song, so of course his version will always be superior no matter what. ed was having fun with this cover. he added his own spins on it, stop hating on something that honestly is irrelevant. just pay attention to his amazing vocals. he twisted the song into his own. he made it much more angry and regretful, where as hozier’s original sounded so much more desperate and soulful. they’re two completely different people. of course ed’s version will sound different.

It wasn't a bad cover, it's just different from the original. Ed gave the song a new twist and personally I liked it, but I understand that some would prefer the original.
Guys its a cover he is meant to put his own spin on it, like be howard singing call me maybe. Covers would be pointless if they where sang the same as the original just with a different voice.
ClassicPork Mmm I can understand what you are saying, because the tempo is upbeat, but I feel the rasp of his voice conveys the pain it should...This is just Ed 100% I love Hozier and I love Ed, two completely different styles, but I love both versions. Even if the tempo is upbeat his rasp does counter the upbeat tempo to help show the pain.
I am seeing a lot of comments saying that Harry or zayn should cover this song and few of the comments appreciating Ed sheeran, so because of that I wanna say this that Ed sheerans voice is amazing!!!💛
He did faster than the original, but I personally think that's awesome sounds painful and makes me want to cry, I feel the anguish and despair of what occurs in the clip. Ed always killing it
+Gabriele Santos I find that whenever I play guitar slowly, I just feel uncomfortable and I feel the need to play it faster even if the song's not that fast. It's weird, but maybe it's the same thing with Sheeran.
I love how the pianist is so into the music that his body sways with every note. That passion is so infective. Also Ed has such great breath control, I'm taken aback❤️

I know this was a whole ago but I’m literally listening to all Ed’s songs and covers right know Bro people are saying this isn’t good this is amazing the point of a cover is to make it your own not to copy the original singing he’s making it to fit his voice and he sounds so good and the raspy parts just sound so good and raw
right. everyone saying he shouldve copied hoizer uhh like dudes prlly dont know the technicalities of singing. i like the orig better, but ed is my man.
Why do people think other commenters who don't share the same opinion as them are automatically 12 year olds who don't know what good music is?! And why do you think you can clarify truly what good music should sound like?! The original AND this cover are both incredibly amazing and sung beautifully by two amazing artists! Ed isn't trying to displace it or make it better, he's simply singing it! If people feel it's better, it's their opinion. And if people don't like it, no one's forcing you to listen to it. Just don't bash on an artist's style for once and either listen to it, or find music that's more your taste. P.s. don't assume a person doesn't know music because of their age... (I am not 12 -.- ... or younger!)
It is rather amusing that among all the pro/against comments, how very few people have actually taken the time to understand the meaning of the song and yet argue about the interpretation.
I really think the original is better. I love ed but he sounds happy while singing this? Almost doesn't seem like he paid attention to the lyrics of the song. It's supposed to be dark.
"ed, here, take this cool guitar" "but...i want my guitar." "ed, you can't, we already shot the intro, you can't-" "i want my guitar." (i know this isn't mine but i couldn't find the original one.)
He posted an image of a blue square on his Instagram and Twitter this morning. :) Also heard that we should be expecting a new album soon. :D (heard all this on Radio 1 this morning)
I would say each version is different. Ed’s cover still sounds awesome because he packs a lot power and emotion into it, making it catchy. Even though I like it, I still prefer Hozier because he creates this deep gothic yet holy feeling which is achieved through his combination of blues and choir.
Before I heard the original version, I heard this and Before hearing how slow the original is. I thought this was Ed's song at first, so when I heard the original, I didn't think that guy could lay it down like Ed.
Some people are so annoying. Of course Hozier sang this better,it's his song but that doesn't mean Ed did bad. Ed just covered this song,he's not challenging Hozier,he's just covering a song so stop commenting who sang it better
Yes - and the whole point of the song is an objection to the Church's behaviour. With lines like "Worship like a dog, at the shrine of your lies", I don't see how you can conclude it is anything but anti-religious. He is talking about the controlling subjugating nature of religion, whilst the foundations are based on lies and hypocrisy.
Chris Campbell I guess you could view it that way though my view is the song is not anti faith (as in not atheistic), but anti religious. A bit of a fine distinction to make as the church forms the foundation of Christianity. It is a bit like saying to the police that you weren't speeding, but were pressing the gas pedal a bit too much. But distinction at this level is subjective interpretation.
Everyone is talking about how they want Harry or Louis to cover take me to church. Don’t get me wrong I want it too but can we please appreciate Ed’s vocals?
I've never heard of Ed Sheeran before, but as a Hozier fan, that was an absolutely brilliant cover (lol, look at me trying to sound British on the BBC channel).
Hozier and Ed.. they both have soft voice that is like a spring weather, one moment it is so still and the next, it gives you an energy rushing through your body. I love both of them. And it is exciting to see one doing other's cover 🤤😪
I have made a terrible life choice trying to work while listening to two of these live lounges in a row with Ed Sheeran. I just can't stop singing along and dancing. Love that man's voice!
Honestly, the most talented artist of the modern day music industry! He has such a genuine passion for music. The fact he can drop into any cover and convey the emotional connection of those songs just proves that!
I think Ed Sheeran, as someone who puts a whole lot of emotion into his own songs and songwriting, knew exactly what the song was about and knew the emotions it was supposed to convey. And of course he managed to convey these emotions through his voice. You can hear the emotion he puts into the song. And just because it sounds slightly more 'cheery' that Hozier's haunting original, doesn't mean that Ed didn't put that emotion in. It's a cover and covers aren't supposed to mimic the original. Ed and Hozier have very different voices, granted. But that doesn't mean that Ed didn't manage to successfully convey the same emotions within the song. He did. It was a great cover. As are all his covers, and songs alike. Does it sound like Hozier's? No. Do they claim it is better than Hozier's? No, rarely does a cover ever achieve that. Does it still carry the same powerful expression of emotion and opinion? Of course it does. An artist, with their own music is always going to be able to express their emotions through the song, the lyrics they write, far better than any cover will. It's their lyrics, their music, their opinions, thoughts and feelings. But that doesn't mean that anyone covering a song can't relate and put raw emotion into the words as well. Ed did a great job and I wish people would stop complaining because it doesn't sound like Hozier's version. If you were expecting Hozier's take on the song, then you probably should have watched his video.
Anyone who says he ruined the song is instantly just saying it because they either don't like Ed Sheeran or he's too poppy for them. Reason being is that it is REALLY similar to the original! except for 2 things: 1) It's not as heavy/chilling and 2) There's not as much emotion in the voice. Everything else is fine. His vocals are on point, especially with "Amen", and instrumentally there isn't anything that stands out as bad. Ed Sheeran, for all his 'poppy' background, is a fantastic musician and singer and I think he's covered it well.
iDoHn the passing chords to chorus are G-F# | F#-F then to Em. this is exact how the pianist plays. And you can see actually Ed is the one who play the wrong note with his guitar. He hit the G chord when the pianist is playing the F#. that is why he out of tune.
Hozier has a higher voice than Ed Sheeran. You can tell Ed is singing at the top of his (chest voice) range here (especially in the chorus). Ambitious vocal for him but the character of Ed's voice shines in his dulcet tones with peaks of power - Thinking out Loud - perfect example.
Interesting considering hozier sings this song in a lower key live. Ed is singing it in the key it was originally composed. I have to hear hoz singing it live in its original key in order to compare. Otherwise I have to assume ed's range is higher than him
to all of you morons saying "it's too rushed " He isn't singing karaoke, he's covering a song with his style. Might I add he did a fantastic job, too! :)
I think Ed Sheeran did a fantastic job of the song. He totally changed it so it worked with his style. Changed it from more dark to a little upbeat. However don't get me wrong Hozier version I love. It has such soulful meaning. And just depth to it. Plus I like that the song is a little dark. I think Hozier version is still better. But Ed Sheeran made the right call to change the tempo and make it into a more upbeat and soulful song, more of his own.
the point of the song is for it to be deep and soulful, to change it to upbeat may as well be a sin considering the message the song was suppose to send
He sang really well but...it was like a lighter version of the original song and couldn't give me goosebumps that I get every single time I listen to the original version.
Personally feel the upbeat tempo does nothing for the song. Much prefer the original but the backing singers were an interesting addition. Giving it a bit of gospel flavour.
mitja klinc Thank you for stating the obvious about the tempo. I am well aware covers do not have to be the same but a difference in tempo can be the making or breaking of a cover, which in my opinion the faster tempo here, as I commented earlier, does nothing for the song.
Lucy Foster On re-listening to both, yeah they are similar but they do set a different feel to the song. This one seemed more joyful while the original is declamatory.
Obviously it's different, Ed has another voice, Hozier's one is more powerful. If Hozier had covered any song by ed it would have been really different. Ed has a calm voice, Hozier has a strong one. Also bmth covered billie eilish but it wasn't that good. Voices are different.
All these comments are so harsh ed never said he did it better than hozier he covered it cuz he loved the song so please stop putting this cover down because I'd really like to see any one of you do better.
there's really no point in comparing this to the original. both are good, but they have such different voices (styles and pitches) that there's nothing to compare. just enjoy both and respect both of their versions.
I love the original, I also love Ed. At first i was very confused with the tempo, i got into it a little more near the end though. But I feel like the tempo is a bit wrong for such a heavy song. Also it's a little too soon, the song is still so current and Hozier has a pretyt unique sound. All in all i do love that Ed tried his own take on this.
Ok second opinion. Listened to this a couple of time more and i'm now starting to get into it way more. It takes some getting used to, but actually it's not a bad cover.
same, I feel like Ed is trying to make it more happier and cheery, but when Hoizer sings it, you can really feel the emotions, but Ed is a great singer, but I feel like this type of music doesn't suit him.
Karla toledo If you listen to Ed's music there is a LOT of emotion in is songs. Ed's is a cover, cover being the prominent word so he changed it to make it faster. Personally I like them both but it's whatever your opinion is.
I saw people saying Hozier is much better at this song. Let me tell you something, first of all this song is Hozier's song, which means the way he says things will always come to ears familiar. Second of all, this cover is live lounge, which is live and i have seen couple of performances Hozier made live. He doesn't even sing it on the same tone as the original track. Don't compare live and soundtrack please. Ed Sheeran sings it perfect in my opinion.
I was gonna post something simular.. When you say tone you mean key. And your competly right! I can't find any live performances of Hozier where he performed it in the original key. Ed Sheran does however.
Stop comparing ed to hozier they are two VERY different artists. This cover is amazing because ed took this song and made it his own. Thats what a real artist does covers. Its not supposed to sound like hozier its supposed to sound like Ed and it did, and it was brilliant. So mission accomplished.
For all of you saying that Ed doesn't have the same match for this song, of course he doesn't! Hozier will always be the best at this because he wrote it! Besides, you don't need to sound just like Hozier. Ed added his own identity to the song, which made it sound great!
honestly i freaked the fck out when i saw this, it's one of my favorite songs and ed singing it is just... i'm speechless. i much prefer the original version, but this is BEAUTIFUL. wow.
Guys you should remember one thing: covering is not copying a song completely, it's more unique when you add your identity to it.
And Ed is def doing that. I like the cover, shoulda slowed it down just a notch, but otherwise I love it
Sure, but, lyrics mean something. Do you bebop to they lrics of Take Me To Church? So odd.
Exactly!!!!

okay so i’ve been scrolling through these comments and it’s honestly irritating me a little bit.
ed sheeran doesnt have to match up to hozier’s skill. they’re two completely different artists, different styles, different voices. of course ed is gonna make this song his own and put his own spin on it- he’s a naturally fast singer. the rasp and grain in his voice makes this cover so, so very good.

ed was having fun with this cover. he added his own spins on it, stop hating on something that honestly is irrelevant. just pay attention to his amazing vocals. he twisted the song into his own. he made it much more angry and regretful, where as hozier’s original sounded so much more desperate and soulful.
they’re two completely different people. of course ed’s version will sound different.

It's way to fast though so...

Diet Lam :P the story is really sad, but he sings it like he is happy and chipper.
ClassicPork I understand you, but he's not happy, he's just singing it differently with more energy.

One of my favorite songs covered by one of my favorite artists 👌 😍
Some people are so annoying. Of course Hozier sang this better,it's his song but that doesn't mean Ed did bad. Ed just covered this song,he's not challenging Hozier,he's just covering a song so stop commenting who sang it better
I adore the rasp he's got in his voice in this song!
This is the reason god made me.... TO LISTEN TO THIS COVER!!!
Ironic given the anti-religious nature of the song ;)
Yes - and the whole point of the song is an objection to the Church's behaviour. With lines like "Worship like a dog, at the shrine of your lies", I don't see how you can conclude it is anything but anti-religious. He is talking about the controlling subjugating nature of religion, whilst the foundations are based on lies and hypocrisy.
Bob Seddigh I reckon it was less anti-religion and more anti-church
don't take it far.. it's a good cover but god didn't make you to listen to this cover. let's be real..😂
But distinction at this level is subjective interpretation.
this song and his voice are so well suited

Everyone is talking about how they want Harry or Louis to cover take me to church. Don’t get me wrong I want it too but can we please appreciate Ed’s vocals?
Exactly, this man is something else!
THANK YOU
I've never heard of Ed Sheeran before, but as a Hozier fan, that was an absolutely brilliant cover (lol, look at me trying to sound British on the BBC channel).
+Michael Francis he's the best
You should listen to his music. He does tons of different styles; Pop, Ballard, Rap, and tons more!
+cheese4g Thats surprising that you have never heard of Ed Sheeran before he is amazing and very popular ! been around a lot longer than Hozier
+cheese4g You've "never heard" of the biggest hit in pop since Michael Jackson? Good one. He's the worlds biggest artist.
+UA-camr hahah (y) :)
Nobody can do Hozier's songs and make them sound as good as Hozier does..you need Dat Voice.
This comment is so spot on 👏
That’s why it’s a cover.
@@riverboatqueen9411 That’s why it’s not a particularly interesting cover.
Is it just me that's digging the pianist?
nope.
Yassssssss
ikr
def not just you! rawr!
No. Me too me too. He rocks!
Hozier and Ed.. they both have soft voice that is like a spring weather, one moment it is so still and the next, it gives you an energy rushing through your body.
I love both of them. And it is exciting to see one doing other's cover 🤤😪
Ed Sheeran isn't a singer.....he's the whole singing industry
Musically demonstrating
And ginger fucking pig whose sold their pants! 🤬🖕
Edsheeren fuivuvivivucù9eeueuueiehehejueoeie9eheiheueie
love the way the pianist poures his heart in the song at 2:01
I have made a terrible life choice trying to work while listening to two of these live lounges in a row with Ed Sheeran. I just can't stop singing along and dancing. Love that man's voice!
Honestly, the most talented artist of the modern day music industry! He has such a genuine passion for music. The fact he can drop into any cover and convey the emotional connection of those songs just proves that!
I acctually think this is a better version. Though both are brilliant I just love Eds voice.
thank god i'm not the only one
me too
There's no better version than the original one ... It's magical ! This one is too fast !
tim0france
YES...exactly what I thought too. Too fast of a tempo. Hoziers version is more haunting and emotional!
This hurts makes my heart ache because it's so fucking beautiful and his voice is so so filled with emotions
So true
I love how he managed to apply his own style without taking the songs essence away
play it at .75 it'll sound a bit more like the og version (p.s guitar will sound distorted)
Me ? Yes
I agree with that. He's technically brilliant but lacks emotion and the power of the hozier version.
-I miss this ginger teddy bear so much-
Cat Nicole he's back now !!!➗➗
Cat Nicole -hi-
Cat Nicole SAME! BUT HE'S BACK NOW
hey, can you tell what is the code to cut the words like you did?
use: ~~
I love both Hozier's and Ed's versions, they are both great, please stop hating Ed just because he made a cover in his own way
That rasp in his voice defines my existence. 😍
ughhhh he is so off tune at 1:05 why
***** Lol, it made me cringe when it happened.
It sounded so wrong
The piano chords are correct. Ed's first note is slightly sharper in the chorus but he got back on track right away. It is not the pianist's fault.
Chun Hong Cheng The pianist did fail the third chord. However, Ed was out of tune anyway.
iDoHn the passing chords to chorus are G-F# | F#-F then to Em. this is exact how the pianist plays. And you can see actually Ed is the one who play the wrong note with his guitar. He hit the G chord when the pianist is playing the F#. that is why he out of tune.
I feel like he could've changed it up abit like he's done in the past with other covers. But i ain't even mad bout this. Fuck this lad is a prodigy.
Jake! I was literally about to message you asking if you could cover a hozier song, preferably work song or cherry wine if you already haven't?
JAKEEEE
Jewel Natasha Yes? :)
MrStrato444 Ill see what I can do. Hozier is amazing!
Exactly
This is great done by Ed Sheeran in his own style!!
And greetings to all of you who stand up for him doing so!!
Hozier has a higher voice than Ed Sheeran.
You can tell Ed is singing at the top of his (chest voice) range here (especially in the chorus). Ambitious vocal for him but the character of Ed's voice shines in his dulcet tones with peaks of power - Thinking out Loud - perfect example.
damn singing is hella complex
sorry! over-analysis?
you´re the man
who the man?
Interesting considering hozier sings this song in a lower key live. Ed is singing it in the key it was originally composed. I have to hear hoz singing it live in its original key in order to compare. Otherwise I have to assume ed's range is higher than him
MY FAVOURITE SINGER SINGING MY FAVOURITE SONG! ☺
Half A Heart my fave song and fave singer too!!
I said that when I saw this!
same
He should be much more famous...
He writes so many fantastic songs
.... I'm, hoping you know he didnt write this.
+Zash of The Kyobi I think he/she was talking about Hozier.
no one can this sing better than hozier himself !! he looked flawless in this song
He is just amazing......no matter what he sings his raspiness in voice is dope
to all of you morons saying "it's too rushed " He isn't singing karaoke, he's covering a song with his style. Might I add he did a fantastic job, too! :)
Try listening to it on .75 speed
He sings live faster...i also dont know why
You got that right he is soooo good
I think Ed Sheeran did a fantastic job of the song.
The message was still sent regardless of the tempo. I think it was still dine extremely well. And I still like the original version better.
I like them both, to be honest Ed actually got me into this song but they are both really good!
Sometimes I just forget how talented Ed is and then I click on something like this...
He sang really well but...it was like a lighter version of the original song and couldn't give me goosebumps that I get every single time I listen to the original version.
his fucking voice dude fucking hell this cover is so good
Ed sheeran is my favorite make singer hands down omg!!! That's bae lol jp
Amen. Ed Sheeran resonates plenty ... and this performance did just that. Tiffany Jones Jax XIV *****
I don't wanna put my hand down 🙋🏼🙅🏼
Been mine since before he was famous, he is incredible isn't he :)
Personally feel the upbeat tempo does nothing for the song. Much prefer the original but the backing singers were an interesting addition. Giving it a bit of gospel flavour.
it is a cover it is not supposed to be the same tempo
the original has a similar gospel-style backup (which on the recording is also Hozier--his range is ridiculous and he used to sing in Anuna)
mitja klinc Thank you for stating the obvious about the tempo.
Agreed.
Ed sheeran makes any song sounds incredible with his voice
@@alistairhomewood7344 true😓
@@alistairhomewood7344 true
It's good at 0,75.
He can't really pull this song though.
Hozier is dimensions better.
Love the man but I have to agree, Ed didn't do a great job with this song. I wouldn't say Hozier is better, but he does sing this song better.
The point of covering a song isn’t to copy it completely...
@@jawshy2621 no one's saying it is
Obviously it's different, Ed has another voice, Hozier's one is more powerful. If Hozier had covered any song by ed it would have been really different. Ed has a calm voice, Hozier has a strong one. Also bmth covered billie eilish but it wasn't that good. Voices are different.
they speed up the song way to much
All these comments are so harsh ed never said he did it better than hozier he covered it cuz he loved the song so please stop putting this cover down because I'd really like to see any one of you do better.
Can this man get anymore perfect.
gosh i need to see this man perform live.
Whoever wrote the piano music for this cover..... Brilliant.
there's really no point in comparing this to the original. both are good, but they have such different voices (styles and pitches) that there's nothing to compare. just enjoy both and respect both of their versions.
I WANT SURE TO EXPECT BUT LITERALLY THE VERY FIRST LINE HE SINGS I WAS LIKE OH DAMN HES AMAZING
It takes some getting used to, but actually it's not a bad cover.
si hacen que lou o harry canten esta cancion todo el fandom los va a amar aun más
I love the Hoziers version more. I think he sing it more powerful and I could really feel it.
same, I feel like Ed is trying to make it more happier and cheery, but when Hoizer sings it, you can really feel the emotions, but Ed is a great singer, but I feel like this type of music doesn't suit him.
Karla toledo If you listen to Ed's music there is a LOT of emotion in is songs. Ed's is a cover, cover being the prominent word so he changed it to make it faster. Personally I like them both but it's whatever your opinion is.
Ik :)
Ed sings ‘ my lover’s got humour ‘

Hello
Ed Sheeran is a top tier artist. He can do the best out of ANYTHING. He is also so unproblematic and just professional♡♡
Ed Sheeran sings it perfect in my opinion.
thank you! 👏
Your welcome :)
Thank you.
Can Dedeoglu WOW,TRUE FAN HERE ~RESPECTED~
I was gonna post something simular.. When you say tone you mean key. And your competly right! I can't find any live performances of Hozier where he performed it in the original key. Ed Sheran does however.
Stop comparing ed to hozier they are two VERY different artists. This cover is amazing because ed took this song and made it his own. Thats what a real artist does covers. Its not supposed to sound like hozier its supposed to sound like Ed and it did, and it was brilliant. So mission accomplished.
Him and Sam smith are the best ever. They should do a duet.
I would die if that happened 😭😍
they have! UA-cam it, it should be on here
They have sung Stay with me together :) Search for it! x
This get recommended in 2020 anyone???
Hey
Yeah
In 2021 hahaha

Ed Sheeran version- relaxing
Demi Lovato version- powerful
Hozier version - out of world
❤❤❤❤❤ love them allll
Hozier must be proud.
haha
Guys. watch it in 1.25 speed. its CRAAAAZY good
its so intense
the intro at 1.25 speed and the rest of it is like he's OD'd on coffee! mega good though haha, its unreal
Its shit.
This meme needs to die.
For all of you saying that Ed doesn't have the same match for this song, of course he doesn't! Hozier will always be the best at this because he wrote it! Besides, you don't need to sound just like Hozier. Ed added his own identity to the song, which made it sound great!
honestly i freaked the fck out when i saw this, it's one of my favorite songs and ed singing it is just... i'm speechless. i much prefer the original version, but this is BEAUTIFUL. wow.
