    I'm Filipino , married to a Filipina (2nd nuptial) and we live in the US. She's the eldest in her family while i'm the youngest in mine. I understand the family structure dynamics in Filipino culture i.e. the role of siblings in a hierarchy. Here's an example, being eldest and despite being married she still feels a need to support her family. Every other month she sends a door-to-door box filled with "stuff" back to her family in the Philippines and other gestures to support to her family. I tolerate it, its just the way responsibility is placed on the eldest. While me being a youngest, didn't have to do any of that stuff.

    • @jaysphilippines
      @jaysphilippines  6 місяців тому +2

      yes, its hard on many in the family who have a responsibility that only some people will ever understand. I took time to understand it myself. it is an adjustment. hope you are doing well, appreciate you,, jay

    Thanks again for sharing your story Jay! Watching your videos and seeing your beautiful family, we don't know the trials and tribulations you have had to go through to get to where you are today. I will make my third trip to the Philippines in January and hopefully make it my final stop in 2026. I have learned a lot in the past few years about the Philippines. One of the most important things I learned is the loyalty a Filipina has to her family. She will sacrifice having a better life if that is what it takes to help her family. I would have the same issue with the car situation. Like you, I would have no problem taking care of my daughter and even paying for the car. But, that is not my responsibility. I have six brothers and four sisters. We are a close knit Latino family in South Texas. We all do well financially and some of us do really well. My father passed away 11 years ago. None of us have to give money to take care of my mother. She takes care of herself because she can. We do all the family things together but she does not need our financial backing. The Filipino and Latino cultures are very similar, but we are responsible for ourselves only and not responsible to our mother and father and brothers and sisters who have not done well. We help because we want to, not as an obligation. I think the difference is that there are so many social safety nets here that don't exist in the Philippines.

    Am a Filipina, it is not exactly a culture. It is a practice in the lowlands. In other parts of the Philippines like us, here in the Cordillera Region, they don't impose on the children to finance parents and other siblings. Be careful too, you in laws might abuse asking for more especially when your wife starts making money. They might be dependent on her. This also happens when a member of a Cordillera family marries in the lowlands like where your married. My daughter inlaw is a lowlander but she comes from a "well-to-do" family , so, they dont need help.

    you think that people are laughing at you, that is not true.
    the truth is, there are so many babies who grew up crying coz their american fathers have left their mothers even before they were born.
    they are called amerasiaons, and most of them are in san angeles, pampanga.
    or in subic, olongapo.
    coz the american military base used to be there.
    american soldiers used to have sex with prostitutes there.
    and maybe they did not know they were impregnating everyone.
    so now, there are so many amerasians, grown up now, who grew up without fathers.
    some of them are even celebrities now.
    coz filipinos fiind them beautiful, the filipino concept of beauty is the western type of appearance.
    those prostitutes didnt know how to have pregnancy control.
    coz it used to be taboo here.
    it used to be that the religious discouraged it and we all thought it was bad.
    women also in the philippines are very virginal, especially just recent decvades ago. it is all changing nowadays but just recenlty, no.
    women here used to value virginity before marriage as if it's the greatest treasure they have.
    and women who had sex before marriage or had sex with multiple men, used to be frowned upon or looked down on.
    and those girls used to be looked at as if they will never be loved by any man anymore, coz they will always be treated like dirty trash, even the rape victims who did not have anything to do with what happened to them.
    that was before.
    before, virgins were the norm.
    now, not anymore.
    but the change was slow and hard before it came to this.
    before, filipinas who had sex with men thought the men loved them.
    even if they were prostitutes.
    i mean, theres a lot of differences in dating, and with what the american men must be doing to them back in the day, maybe the women were thinking that those americans loved them!
    idk, i might be wrong, but you could ask your wife or the elders regarding what iom saying. idk if they will be able to explain it, but they know this.
    you are lucky about adelaine but she is also very very lucky to find someone like you, someone with faith in Jesus, and someone who cant bear anymore the thought of his own baby not knowing him and not growing up with hium. the girl is so l ucky toi have you coz many americans have left so many filipino women who bore thier babies.
    and you ar aslso so blessed to have adelaine and your baby.
    she is kind and pure and honest.
    she is not a money whore.
    you two, you three, are blessed.

Once a son or daughter has graduated from school and started to work it seems they are obligated to provide support to the family or take care of the whole family. I don't want to do that to my son. Filipino culture or just economic hardship?...............if you are the eldest in the family and you come from a very poor family, you are expected by your Parents to help them in their daily chores from running errand, washing the clothes, etc. to providing food on the table and sometimes financing to help send siblings to schools specially if the eldest have a stable job. Also, to most Son/Daughters it is one way of showing their appreciation for their Parents specially if coming from a poor family and the Parents have to work hard just to send him/her to College and graduate is the proudest moment for any poor filipino Parents. But for the rich and well educated Filipino families, you don't see this happens. Every poor filipino can relate to this. I for one.......although the second to the eldest. After graduating from a University and was able to get a job after that, I still help my Parents. After I got married, that's when the regular financial assistance stopped. I only provide financial help in times of an emergency.

    • @jaysphilippines
      @jaysphilippines  5 місяців тому +1

      i wouldnt say its out of the norm. I cant really say though to be honest. I have never met anyone who told me they did it. To me it comes down to your gut feeling, if it is bothering you i guess you would have to do it to get that doubt over with. but i never had that feeling or thought. Its takes a real special girl to do that, those girls would typically have something about them that would cast doubt. I am in louisville till end of august them off to PHI, for a few weeks solo. then we will all go back for holidays again like last year.
