Although I've seen Cheap Trick live since 1977, I've always thought that this song, and "wherever would I be", should have gotten more radio airplay and became a big hit!!!!!!!
Way better than 'The Flame' as it's an actual Cheap Trick song they wrote in-house, and if you are a long time CT fan, it shows. I honestly cringe a bit each time I see them and they have to do the required play of 'The Flame' when I'd love to see so many other CT songs like this live. The '97 album was a CT masterpiece but unfortunately Red Ant publisher went belly up before promoting it at all.
@@IRgEEK I feel the same way about hearing them play The Flame live. All I can think about are all of the amazing songs from their catalog that I wish they would have played instead.
Having been born and Raised in Rockford. I haven't been back home in 10 years. But seeing Images of State st with the Midway Theater or 1st Avenue overpass on the railroad tracks. Brings a whole new meaning to this song for me. Cause the Rockford that I grew up in back in the 80's is long gone and I have to sadly say Goodbye to it.
Criminally overlooked classic CT track. This is the song that should have shot straight to #1 instead of "The Flame". I really think that if their label at the time (Red Ant) hadn't gone teats-up 2 weeks after this album was released, this song would have been promoted enough for it to catch fire. CT '97 is easily their "comeback kid" album, and along with "Rockford" their best post-70's work. They were really on fire at this time. I saw them on this tour and they played with a *LOT* of heart.
No, I agree. It definitely is one of their best songs. Every bit as much a classic as "Surrender", "Oh Candy", or "Dream Police". It just didn't catch on because their label at the time went under right after this album was released, so it wasn't really promoted. This song has all the right ingredients. Pretty much a perfect power pop gem. I've been a huge fan since '78, and I would definitely put this one up there with their best late 70's output.
Daxx does a phenomenal job but… I was lax on my Cheap Trick for some years and for some listened to just “All Shook Up” and the albums prior to it so for no good reason this is new to me today. This song sounds, looks and feels like Cheap Trick to me. The original lineup will always by my favorite. Though having seen the band with Jon Brant and with Daxx I know they put out great music no matter what lineup.
It's good to see Bun E. Carlos on drums. And Rick Nielsen hamming it up as usual. Saw them in concert in 1979. I remember Rick bringing out the checkerboard muti-neck guitar. These guys have stuck together for a long time. (Correction made)
I think the only reason it wasn't a big hit was because their label at the time folded right after the album was released. The song was never promoted. And then they just dropped it from their live set after the initial tour for the album, for god knows what reason.
It come and go... here and there you hear it you may ignore it... the more you slip out the more it pulls your emotion ...listening for wish and haze with shy ness laughing say good bye ... very nice song i hope i was in this moment from past.. but then its over
Fun fact: The young blonde girl in this clip is Holland Zander, daughter of frontman Robin Zander. She grew into a beautiful young lady fronting her own band; look up any clip by 'The Snaggs' on UA-cam and you'll see for yourself...
I have no idea why it was ever dropped from their set. I saw them do this one on the tour they did for the '97 album and it went over really well live. I'd much rather hear them do this than anything from the '86-'94 period.
How does it feel to be better How does it feel to be on your own Oh tell me that you came to say goodbye Everybody wants to laugh When you feel bad Seems like the only way when the nights won’t pass When you’re so sad If you can’t go back And you can’t look down Everything comes to mind It’s a breakdown The way things seem to slide It’s a free fall When you’re so sad If you can’t go back And you can’t look down How does it feel to be better How does it feel to be on your own Oh tell me why did you take the time Walk away, tell those lies Why dod you waste your time To tell me that you came to say goodbye
after 3 releases in the last 2 years, I have backtracked. Love '97. A fan since In Color, then again, backtracked to Cheap Trick('77). Have seen so many live shows - where they shine the best. The 80's, between family and less than their best, lost track. Glad to be back on board and looking forward to more live shows.
and the boy in the video (at 3:03) is Daxx Nielsen...now the drummer for Cheap Trick and son of Rick Nielsen...founder, writer and guitar player for Cheap Trick.
This album is much better than "Special One". It was one of the greatest returns to form I've ever listened to with any band. Special One was ok. A few good tracks, but it wasn't exactly what I'd call 'special'. Now "Rockford" was a killer album.
American radio will always choose the lowest common denominator. The simple fact that "The Flame" was a #1 hit and this song flew under everybody's radar speaks volumes on that.
Another great song/album but 2 weeks after the release Red Ant went belly up! Rick refers to this as the Dead Ant era! It's to bad because this album rocked!
Yep. This album was/is easily one of the all time greatest "return to form" albums ever. I remember listening to it for the first time right after it came out in '97, and being absolutely ecstatic that Cheap Trick *FINALLY* sounded like the Cheap Trick I fell in love with in the late 70's again, after a very long period of going astray. I saw them when they toured this album and they were on fire. You could tell they were back. Unfortunately Red Ant folded at the worst possible time. Too bad another label didn't pick the album up immediately and promote it properly. I have no doubt this song would have been a hit, and probably "Hard To Tell" as well.
¿Es mi imaginación o el Sr. Tom cambió su personalidad? Siento que a finales de los noventa fue cuando empezó a cambiar algo en él. Solo es curiosidad 😜 Por cierto, es una de mis canciones favoritas 😍
Longtime CT fan here since '78. As much as I think Bun E is one of those amazing drummers who's shoes, no one can fill... I've still been enjoying their albums they've made with Daxx. They still write great songs. Let's put it this way... I'd much rather listen to the latest albums without Bun E than I would to literally any of the albums from '86 through '94 that Bun E did play on. And I say this as someone who thinks Bun E Carlos is one of the top 3 greatest drummers in the history of rock and roll.
Although I've seen Cheap Trick live since 1977, I've always thought that this song, and "wherever would I be", should have gotten more radio airplay and became a big hit!!!!!!!
This song is a favorite; it should be in their live set...every night! It puts 'the Flame' to shame!
The Flame is a steaming hunk of SHIT compared to this song. Too bad money still has the final say.
The Flame is a great song. So is this one. It's not an either/or thing.
Way better than 'The Flame' as it's an actual Cheap Trick song they wrote in-house, and if you are a long time CT fan, it shows.
I honestly cringe a bit each time I see them and they have to do the required play of 'The Flame' when I'd love to see so many other CT songs like this live.

One of my favorites that I've been replaying on Caset first since I first heard it at sixteen. It never disappoints.

Summed up this single and period perfectly.
One of the best songs they've ever written...i love this song
not one of the best songs they ever wrote, but its alright

Me too love it, shoulda been a Big Hit ‼️💜
I agree this is one of their best songs. Also one of their best albums!

Well Tom Petersson has been back since 1987, so it's still all good. Daxx is ok, but yeah, I still miss Bun
Tom's smile at 1:16 could get me thru a lot, even this pandemic.
Thanks guys!
Right??? Love Tom
I really appreciate Tom Petersons bass playing....Saw them in concert when this album came out

Yup, Rick lost that beard in the early 2000's
I'm watching it in 2020 and not for the first or last time either! Really great song!
Love seeing these videos again. I miss my "buddies". I've seen them 37 times, but not in the last 2 years, sadly. Favorite band ever! LOVE YOU!
As close to perfect as Cheap Trick has come. My favorite.
this is far from perfect, but its good
I wish they would do stuff live from this album, especially this song. This song should have been a really big hit for them.
I think the only reason it wasn't a big hit was because their label at the time folded right after the album was released. The song was never promoted. And then they just dropped it from their live set after the initial tour for the album, for god knows what reason.
I saw them multiple times when they were touring in support of this album... Incredible show every time!
I saw them a few months ago in Hot Springs Arkansas and I couldn't believe it, they played 4 in a row from this album! It was a GREAT show!
Finally into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
How does it feel?
I met the band so many years ago and so happy for them rock on.
My favorite CT single. Love this song and album. Wish they would play this in concert!
truly UNDERRATED power pop, great song
Most underrated Cheap Trick album!
Yep. This one, and "Rockford".
It come and go... here and there you hear it you may ignore it... the more you slip out the more it pulls your emotion ...listening for wish and haze with shy ness laughing say good bye ... very nice song i hope i was in this moment from past.. but then its over

I actually cried listening to this song.

Great band..Great song...greatest era...I'm 😥
I remember when this video premiered, I thought it was one of their best music videos, and another great song.
one of their best songs!!
As a longtime fan since '78, I agree. This one's a classic.
Great Lp too! I wish they would release it on Vinyl! I would own 2 pod those! Love the “ Guitar” album! As I do all Cheap Trick.

Tom Peterson's and Bun E. are magical here.

n probably in rockford!
Cool! Thanks for confirming, I thought that it looked like her 😊.
I wish they would put this song in their setlist.
I have no idea why it was ever dropped from their set. I saw them do this one on the tour they did for the '97 album and it went over really well live. I'd much rather hear them do this than anything from the '86-'94 period.
This is a great tune from an album filled with great tunes! Thanks for the share!
A Cheap Trick Classic from '96.
97
Great song. I wish they'd do it live again...
That 97 self titled album is in their top 5. Great top to bottom. Plus it had some of there best straight ahead rock ever.
they made this video in ROCKFORD, ILL, mine and CHEAP TRICKS hometown
I'm going to see them at North Star Casino in Bowler Wisconsin. I would love it if they played this song.
Cheap Trick is the BEST!
@🤘🤘🎸 🎸
This song has a 60s feel to it. Kinds sounds like a beatles song. Came out the same time as that movie 'that thing you do'
Most of Cheap Trick's songs have a Beatles-like vibe to them. One of their biggest influences, along with Roy Wood and the Move.
Man that was a good album, too.
Brilliant pop song. BRILLIANT!

I Love this song!
Great song ...from one of the best! Cheap Trick!!
Love. Watching September 2018.

Great song !
So. Good. ⚡️⚡️It’s a freefall xx
21 years ago today this video was shot, where have the years gone?
How does it feel to be better
How does it feel to be on your own
Oh tell me that you came to say goodbye
Everybody wants to laugh
When you feel bad
Seems like the only way when the nights won’t pass
When you’re so sad
If you can’t go back
And you can’t look down
Everything comes to mind
It’s a breakdown
The way things seem to slide
It’s a free fall
When you’re so sad
If you can’t go back
And you can’t look down
How does it feel to be better
How does it feel to be on your own
Oh tell me why did you take the time
Walk away, tell those lies
Why dod you waste your time
To tell me that you came to say goodbye
Top notch song.
Awesome LP! Great song too....too bad label went bye bye before they could properly promote the CD.
Cheap Trick should just change their name to Priceless Miracle.
Well done yet again Gentlemen.
Wow! I will see them for the fifth time this coming July.
Love this song - wicked :-) x
Perfect popsong...sounds like The Posies...

to me they lose the shock value of the initial hits but still very good nevertheless ,everyone ages but they'll never get old
"shock value"?
It's not Cheap Trick without Bun E.
That ship has sailed. Daxx is doing an exemplary job.
