    The age old question, what is better, a red dot + magnifier or a LPVO (low power variable optic). In this video we explore the pros and cons of each optic system. The LPVO is a Vortex Viper Gen 2 1-6, on a Radian Defense Model 1. The competitor is a EOTech EXPS-3 with a G33 magnifier, both of which are on Unity Fast Mounts. The magnifier gun is a Type A Rifle 11.5 Pro model. Suppressor on the Type A is an OSS Helix 556. We hope you enjoy and chime in down in the comments.

    Good rule of thumb if you are unsure what will work best on your setup: if you’re in an urban area rock the Eotech+magnifier combo. Rural areas then rock the lpvo. My reasoning is you’re less likely to take longer shots in an urban area but when you do then the magnifier can get it done. LPVO is a better choice if you’d take more shots at distance rather than inside 100yards. Just my 2 cents

    I’ve ran numerous optics for Duty/Combat/Training. I feel you guys missed a very important variable in the equation here: Multiple threat engagements at varied/unknown distances. This would have really taken this comparison to some Big Brain level sh!t. The EOTech is a combat optic while the LPVO is a Competition Gun Masterclass. Additionally - I have seen EOTechs get destroyed and still project the reticle to make shots on shattered glass
    The divide is in the POU with the LPVO letting designated marksmen be viable in CQB, while the EOTech uses a “Battle Zero” of 50/200 or 36/300 to make combat hits with long range being an after-thought (enter magnifier)
    The biggest question is: “Are you doing DMR sh!t?”
    Yes - get the LPVO
    No - Get the EOTech
    FYI, I run an ACOG/off set RMR on a URGI 14.5

    Let me start by saying great video!! Keep up the awesome content!!
    I'm a police officer in San Antonio, I was fortunate to have experimented with the LPVO's, ACOG's & Magnifier/red dot set ups.
    90% of my LE training is inside 100 yards. So I picked the Magnifier/red dot set up here's why.
    Red dots are hands down the best optic for CQB or inside 100 yeards. It's also easier to learn and to be honest CQB stuff is fun! I tend to gravitate more towards this because of its simplicity.
    Note: the Red dot/magnifier is not great for distance shooting. The 2 MOA becomes enlarged with the magnifier and can throw your shot off at 250+ meters... but in law enforcement it's rare that you EVER have to engage at long distances, If you do, be prepared to explain WHY!!
    ACOG. Well this was my favorite till I had to spend more money on a rmr for CQB. My buddies who deployed to Afghanistan mentioned this to be their favorite optic. The acog is the best for its durability, mid range shooting, and it looks so dam good! Looms like a 4k movie!! Also, its a dam ACOG! ACOG was way ahead of it times!! And was used in the middle east so that speaks volumes.
    Note: Best for Mid range, unknown terrain, best sight picture. Not so great for CQB.
    LPVO. I personally trained with this for work and was quick to hate it for CQB / inside of 50 meters. YEA, you can get good if you train ALOT with it! I know LE officers/SWAT officers who train all day and run LPVO's and love them. My issue is the cost, weight, durability, eye relief and I dont have alot of time to be training like special forces or SWAT guys (twice a week or more). One SWAT officer told me he'd rather run a cheap red dot/magnifier set up then a cheap LPVO...
    Note: LPVO's are know to be the the jack of all trades... "Good at everything, master at none"
    Hope this helped! God bless and safe training!

    Having both, I prefer an E0-Tech and magnifier. The reticle is awesome. Zero for 5/200. The bottom hash mark is basically my 7-10 yard hold, center is 50-200 yards, and just hold a tad high for 300. 400+ is just a bit higher. Its fast. As cool as the Unity mounts are, the lower 1/3 of the EXPS3-0 is fine. No need for mounts and you can save a lot of money.... and that money can go toward irons and batteries. LOL I also found I hate messing with power rings even with a throw lever on an LPVO. Flipping the G33 to the side is fast and easier than a stiff power ring. If you run a 5x magnifier, then you're right there with a 1-6. Even with a 3x, you gain a lot of capability. I've also fund that certain LPVO's get smashed easy... if you roll like a cave man. Both have their places... both work... you just gotta know what you want to do with your rifle.

    I agree with alot of your point. In. A civilian application, shtf role, I'm not engaging anything past 300 yards (talking defensive shooting). I can reliably hit out to 300 with a red dot so that's what I train with but I do have rifles set up with lvpo's. Where I live you travel 5 minutes one direction and you're in the city, 5 minutes the other and farm land or vast sections of forrest so having the ability to glass and identify potential combatants is a good thing. I will say that if you train with the lvpo you can run it just as fast as a red dot.
    With the magnifier, I have a buddy who was a sof guy for 20 years and he said he and his guys never ran the magnifier on the rifle. They would stow it on they're cargo pocket or PC and pull it out only if they needed it.

    Eotech with a 36 yard zero and a G33 for me

    • @DTS-6906
      @DTS-6906 3 роки тому +1

      I’ve been running the EOTech and a G33 Magnifier on my 16” Colt M4 L.E. and I can honestly say I love the accuracy and the ease of use for the set up! It works fast and accurately in a variety of situations from a CQB out to distance 250yds. Plus. Also, I have the standard Colt M4 “flip-up front sight” and a Buttler “flip-up Rear Sight” mounted directly underneath of my G33 Magnifier (for back up use only). So should my optics get damages or batteries go dead; I can simply flip the Magnifier to the side and pop up the rear sight and I can see the front sight dirrectly through my EOTech Holographic and still be able to engauge rather quickly at good distances.
      I’ve looked at several of the LVPO’s and have considered mounting one on another Rifle with a 45 degree canted Red Dot. I just am not sure if I want to go with a FFP or a SFP set up and which reticle version that I really want to go with; as they all vary in power and looks. Seriously want to see one with the “TRYBE Optics Enhancer /Magnification Doubler” added to the front of the LVPO; just to see what kind of magnification picture you’ll get especially when the LVPO is powered up.
      Which would be better with the doubler: FFP vs: SFP?, 1x4, 6, or 8 magnification? clear or fuzzy sight picture? Balance of rifle once added? ect.

    • @flyinb45
      @flyinb45 3 роки тому +1

      @@DTS-6906 I don't have any experience with the Trybe unit. FFP is going to give you an accurate bullet drop and ranging reticle at any magnification. SFP you'd be accurate at full magnification and you'd have to figure out your dope at each interval other than that. This is all based of course on you zeroing the optic at the recommended distance and using the same or similar to recommended ammo.

    Weight of the eotech exps 3-0 is like 11oz Unity mount is 2-3 oz magnifier and FTC is another 12-15 oz depending on magnification. People who say the lpvo weighs so much are funny lol. Aimpoint Unity setup vs lpvo the only real killer is the weight. That being said the Achilles heel of the aimpoint is the function knob. If that breaks or is damaged you have nothing. There’s a video of a guy destroying a swamp Fox lpvo where he literally had to bend it back straight with a crowbar. And there was still a reticle. It’s hard to argue the robust construction of modern lpvos. And all the same guys complaining about a durable lpvo being too expensive are the same people spending 800$ on a red dot 😂 personally I own both red dot on any 10.5-11.5. 12.5-16 inch gets an lpvo and anything longer will be a high mag optic. No clue why people argue which is better, it’s like arguing if a Glock 17 is better than a 19😂 both are made for different things. If I’m going to be clearing buildings I want a RDS if I’m hiking up and down mountains I want an acog. And if I have no idea where and when the fight will occur, I run an lpvo. But different strokes for different folks

I gots a Nikkon 1x4 LPVO (unfortunately without the BDC, but I made my choice!) AND technically the EOTECH is a holographic sight which sucks up the battery life more than a true red dot, right? With the EXPS&G33 i like that combo on 11.5’s that i had set up for 0-250/300 max. Then on my reece style set up i run an TA31 aurora acss acog on a adm 2.04” height qd mount's with an arisaka defense offset 1.93” height offset rmr/HE508T V2 Elite for 0-600 yards. I only run an LPVO 1-8x pa platinum acss raptor m2 on my .308 pof Revolution due the fact i dont mind the weight on it with it set up for 0-800 yards. However the reece set ups i have with mounts are 16-17oz all in vs the 35+ ounces for the 1-8x. But given the light weight of the rifle is 6.75lbs naked and just under 12lbs with suppressor, atlas bipod, modlite oks/reptilia 18650 body/ds00tailcap/ut hot button, bfg sling, and the pa platinum 1-8x with reptile offset 45deg top cap for a he508t v2 elite witht the geissele mount is more than accepable weight for a 16” .308. So in short i try and keep the weight of my rifle relative to what the intended distances i plan to use it for. as just like any other tool there is one tool for every job. I may just be a weekend shooter but like having multiple specialized set up that excell at the task they were built for than to have a “do it all” rifle that is adiquate at most tasks yet excells at none.
