I had to educate myself to your point about rights to the show. According to what I have been able to research, it seems that they (Amazon) did in fact get permission from the estate of Tolkien (in the same way one would seek rights to the countless films about Elvis presley just for example) and wrote only according to the unfinished tales of the second age which Tolkien hadn't finished anyways before his death. I suppose it's up to a personal opinion as to whether or not it disrespects his legacy. But it seems to me that they had family and experts around to help bring the show to life and that's as good as it gets if you're going to do something like that for someone who is long passed. Do you think Tolkien would have wanted his work to die with him? I think he would have appreciated that it's carried forward for new generations and modern audiences.
