The last time i watched this movie i remember trying to figure out what time period it was set in, but it's so fuckin elusive. The clothing and diegetic music seems 40s, the technology is pretty current for the time, the mention of abortion probably points towards 70s or later, the reference to jodie foster and then yoda means at least '80. I think it's intentionally misleading haha

The funniest thing is, me and my friend are really creeped out by the song that plays in the opening scene. The song is called "Closer" and it is basically about bondage and really violent sex. But, the actual song is played differently, and I didn't know it was the song while I was watching, and I heard the last line "You Bring me Closer To God" and I was mind blown, because I'm really freaked out by that song

They CLEARLY showed the picture of the device, and then the guy with a blanket on him with the device still attached, and the guy screaming “get this off of me!”....seriously guys, try paying better attention to the details in the film. This film is a masterpiece in my opinion. Everything about it is just first class. Seriously creepy intro with disturbing music really sets the tone, and the film is really creepy from start to finish. When I saw this in the cinema, I was floored. Nothing beats the first viewing. Afterwards, when women were lining up for the bathroom, they were silent. No one spoke afterwards. I've never seen this kind of reaction to a movie before or since. It was weird. But this movie just felt so real. It's so well made. I love it, but it creeps me out.

1995 was the year of great crime films: Se7en, Heat, & The Usual Suspects. All three are highly recommended for fans of The Dark Knight (2008). You can definitely see the influence. The city in this film can pretty much be assumed to be Gotham, and the antagonist has the tendencies of a Batman villain as well. Only more sadistic given the hard R-rating.

    SPOILER!!!
This movie has several hints for the ending if you notice. I remember watching it the first time, after they discovered the killer is that reporter that had took picture of Mills, I immediately knew either him or his wife would die at the end. In that stair scene, John Doe was pushed by Mills after took a picture of Mills and then Mills, on his rage, spelled his last name for John. Later, in the alley chase scene, after realized his place has been exposed by 2 cops (Mills and Somerset ), John about to kill Mills then heard Somerset called Mills and remembered he has heard this name before so John decided to spare Mills's life. John has a picture of Mills and his last name, he can easily find out everything about Mills. In the car, on the way to the place John said has 2 bodies, John intensified pissing off Mills and said Mills will be remember after this event, that's the hint for Mills's rage or wraith will be John's last masterpiece.

Really? I thought Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a huge let down. It was identical to the original and offered nothing new. Someone might argue saying, "It's a remake; how much different can they make it?" and I would tell them to watch Let the Right One In and Let Me In. That's how a remake is made. Fincher is one of the best, though.

God this movie is amazing. The best thing about it is the way you get images in your head about the sick things in this movie without Fincher ever actually showing a person being killed or anything. He puts everything in place but ultimately allows the viewer to use their imagination with it, which makes the movie even more haunting and twisted. Love this movie and love Fincher! Now they are both among the Top 5 directors working today.

An element of Seven that cannot be overlooked is it's musical score. It builds the dark, gritty feel of this film to a crescendo of fevered intensity while at the same time having moments of heartfelt warmth or haunted melancholy. Man! Completely agree with you. People often look at its darkness, but with Paltrow, even though she meets such a terrible end, and Freeman and Pitt's back and forth, sharing both irrational and rational fear of evil and what's to be done about it, those dogs, the 'vibrating home,' Pitt's eagerness, there's actually quite a bit of light in this movie. And woah, when Freeman delivers his last line, I get chills. Genuinely, it makes me feel warm, somehow, even though the final act seems to envelope us in hopelessness. Fucking amazing movie with knockout performances.

After so many years not seeing this movie (I tend to keep away from crime/investigating movies) I saw this on Netflix and decided to give it a watch. I now can claim that Se7en is one of my all time favorite movies. I have never had a movie make me feel the tension I was supposed to feel, I've never been so invested in a crime movie that was entirely a fictional movie. I was actually on the edge at my seat and screaming/crying at my screen during the climax/ending. I am so utterly lucky to have seen this movie where I was not spoiled about anything about the movie other than the basic plot of it. In fact, the reason I came to see your review is because I was so amazed by this movie that I had to see if anyone else felt the same way about this movie as me. Se7en was THAT incredible to me. A true classic of a movie and one that I adore and can rewatch over and over again.

Ernest Hemingway wan once wrote: “The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.” I agree with the second part.

Really looking forward to the remaining Fincher reviews. Can you review Requiem for a Dream and Memento after that? Thanks.

Alien 3 kicks ass. And it is perhaps the deepest one and the one that shows the human side of Ripley the best.

"If his head splits open and a UFO comes flying out, I want you to have expected it".. I swear, at that point of the film, I 'was' expecting something like that!
Great line from a brilliant film.

I just saw the movie after watching this review. And to be honest, I was sort of let down. The movie wasn't bad by any means, but to be honest I wasn't shocked by the ending. I think that watching the review "prepared" me for what was to come. I anticipated what was probably going to be in the box, especially when he said there were two bodies left, and the guys wife was pregnant. I think if I didn't watch this review on it and just came across the movie on my own, I would have been more shocked and awed. I was really looking forward to this movie too. I wanted to be impressed and really caught off guard by the twist at the end but I wasn't. Still a great movie. Just wish I was "dazzled" and "awed" like the majority of the people who saw it. I love when movies do that.

I thought the second bodie was john doe himself and not the baby... (because the baby has nothing to do with the 7 death.... I dont know whats the english word but you know what I mean ^^)

BlessTheKnife That's because you watched it 20 years after it came out and have probably seen all the movies that borrowed from it, including the trendy twist ending movies of the late 90's and early 2000's including 6th Sense.
At the time this came out...Many, many movies were trying to copy
Silence of the Lambs, doing the crazy genius, psycho killer villain.
Se&en was the movie that came out and did it right after 5 years of lame psychological thrillers from the Cape Fear remake to The Fan with Robert Deniro

+BlessTheKnife i think people were disgusted, not dazzled. no one was dazzled when they saw the ending. disturbed, disgusted, motionless

Speaking as someone who can watch Evil Dead or Dead Alive while eating and feel nothing, the Sloth scene in this movie still freaks me the hell out.
I don't know what it is exactly but it's just really disturbing on an emotional level.
