I just watched it the other day for the first time! I've been hearing the "what's in the box" line for years and had no idea what it was all about! I'm so glad it wasn't spoiled for me because I loved the F out of this film!
The Lust scene was just brilliantly done. David Fincher directed Se7en to perfection. My favourite director, and Se7en is my favourite film alongside The Dark Knight.

To this day, Seven is a movie that looks that it could take place anytime. It's timeless and the killings are sick. The killer is priceless and perfect. The actor who does the role of the killer does it PERFECT. Damn he is scary in this film
The last time i watched this movie i remember trying to figure out what time period it was set in, but it's so fuckin elusive. The clothing and diegetic music seems 40s, the technology is pretty current for the time, the mention of abortion probably points towards 70s or later, the reference to jodie foster and then yoda means at least '80. I think it's intentionally misleading haha
The funniest thing is, me and my friend are really creeped out by the song that plays in the opening scene. The song is called "Closer" and it is basically about bondage and really violent sex. But, the actual song is played differently, and I didn't know it was the song while I was watching, and I heard the last line "You Bring me Closer To God" and I was mind blown, because I'm really freaked out by that song
Sean Johnson The original is by Nine Inch Nails, the remix was unreleased for the longest time, but it has now surfaced and you can listen to it on Spotify. Look for the Closer - Unrecalled mix. If definitely set the tone for the movie!
Sanjay Raju how did you not understand it? They CLEARLY showed the picture of the device, and then the guy with a blanket on him with the device still attached, and the guy screaming “get this off of me!”....seriously guys, try paying better attention to the details in the film. The director doesn’t need to spoon feed you. The fact that fincher DIDNT actually show the lust kill taking place, but only the aftermath makes it all the more disturbing.
@@greggately5782 Another thing was the text. He said " ( I translate from the German Version because I live in Germany and saw it in German, so the spelling could be different than the english Version ) Oh God Ohhh God he had a gun to my head and told me to fuck her. He was sweaty and was stuttering and shaking so bad. You could just feel the horror the entire time.
This film is a masterpiece in my opinion. Everything about it is just first class. Seriously creepy intro with disturbing music really sets the tone, and the film is really creepy from start to finish. When I saw this in the cinema, I was floored. Nothing beats the first viewing. Afterwards, when women were lining up for the bathroom, they were silent. No one spoke afterwards. I've never seen this kind of reaction to a movie before or since. It was weird. But this movie just felt so real. It's so well made. I love it, but it creeps me out.

1995 was the year of great crime films: Se7en, Heat, & The Usual Suspects. All three are highly recommended for fans of The Dark Knight (2008). You can definitely see the influence. The city in this film can pretty much be assumed to be Gotham, and the antagonist has the tendencies of a Batman villain as well. Only more sadistic given the hard R-rating.
Harsh Parmar That's a decade, actually. lol But yeah, 1994 alone had The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Leon: The Professional, Natural Born Killers, Ed Wood, Speed, True Lies, The Crow, Interview with the Vampire, Drunken Master 2, The Mask, Stargate, Legends of the Fall, Heavenly Creatures, Fist of Legend, Clear and Present Danger, Clerks, Dumb & Dumber, etc... But a ton of audience favorites came from the 80's as well.
I love the scene when they’re going out to the countryside and John Doe is confessing his crimes. The police car cage is used like a confessional booth lattice. It’s very fitting given the themes of the movie.
SPOILER!!! This movie has several hints for the ending if you notice. I remember watching it the first time, after they discovered the killer is that reporter that had took picture of Mills, I immediately knew either him or his wife would die at the end. In that stair scene, John Doe was pushed by Mills after took a picture of Mills and then Mills, on his rage, spelled his last name for John. Later, in the alley chase scene, after realized his place has been exposed by 2 cops (Mills and Somerset ), John about to kill Mills then heard Somerset called Mills and remembered he has heard this name before so John decided to spare Mills's life. John has a picture of Mills and his last name, he can easily find out everything about Mills. In the car, on the way to the place John said has 2 bodies, John intensified pissing off Mills and said Mills will be remember after this event, that's the hint for Mills's rage or wraith will be John's last masterpiece.

This has been one of my favorite films ever since I first saw it. The fact that it is all about suggestion is the key to its greatness. "Seven" is the greatest proof that something can be utterly grotesque and also be a stunning work of art.
Great Analysis Chris, as always. Here are my top 10 favorite movies of all time: 10: Dancer in the Dark(2000) 9: Barry Lyndon(1975) 8: Metropolis(1927) 7: Carrie(1976) 6: Citizen Kane(1941) 5: Rosemary's Baby(1968) 4:A Clockwork Orange(1971) 3: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) 2: Psycho(1960) 1: The Shining(1980) Take me 3 years to finally decide what are the best movies ever(in my personal opinion).
You nailed this review. By far, this is my favorite film. The different atmosphere they create for each sin is just incredible. I've never been more engrossed in a film, though Memento is a close second.
Wouldn't be much point to reviewing Nolan's movies. I'm certain he already has done TDK, TDKR and Inception. Most likely Batman Begins, too, which only leaves The Prestige and Memento. And that one black and white movie of his. But I would love to see his review on The Prestige, now that I think about it.
David is one of my favorite directors as well...just the way he makes his movies are all so...unique?? And are just oscar-worthy films. Girl with the dragon tattoo has be my favorite movie made by him but Se7en was great as well. Nice video Chris :)
Really? I thought Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a huge let down. It was identical to the original and offered nothing new. Someone might argue saying, "It's a remake; how much different can they make it?" and I would tell them to watch Let the Right One In and Let Me In. That's how a remake is made. Fincher is one of the best, though.
07foxmulder Accuracy is what makes book-to-film adaptations so well done to me. Wether it be a remake of another film adapting the book as well, it's still accurate to its source material.
C. Pasta What's the point of remaking something when it's going to be identical to the original? It just seemed like Hollywood was pandering to the lazy people out there who didn't want to read subtitles and to cash in on a trend.
I want to mention the: "this is not even my desk" scene. Get me every time. And the ending, the final minute, the last sentences between the captain and Freeman and the quote of Hemingway, no music, just sirens and darkness fading... Its one of my favorite ending of all time.
I don't think 'Donnie Darko' should really be explained. Its a mesmeric film of stunning intelligence and confidence, and a triumph for the American independent movement; but to give the film an entirely logical and definite answer would be to do it a disservice.
robertlutece1912 I don't buy it, don't you feel awe when finding out how things work? To me it makes it all the more wonderful, from a tree to the universe to Donnie Darko.
Part of what scares me about this movie is that Morgan Freeman's character (Somerset) is a seasoned detective who has seen all kinds of horrific crimes. And yet, this serial killer genuinely frightens him and makes him question everything he's ever learned or experienced.
"One of the greatest movies of all time" is a tall order, but Se7en is certainly one of the most original and eery films of all time. Acted to perfection, tone is sublime. Certainly one of the defining films of the decade of the '90s.
I love this review in a certain aspect; It's common knowledge that a certain actor didn't want to be mentioned in the film credits (until the end), and the fact that you didn't mention his name or his picture in this video just shows a lot of respect to that idea, and the respect to the ideology of film and the people who make these films.
WHAT'S IN THE BOXXXX....WHAT IN THE BOXX.......WHAT'S In the boxxxxxx......................... Countered with: How did it get burn...how did it get burn....HOW DID IT GET Burnnn.........
Chris, I gotta tell ya man. I genuinely appreciate what you do. I've seen these movies countless times but you make me excited to watch them again. For that I thank you good sir.
I absolutely love Se7en is one if my favorites. The reason I loved Prisoners so much was because it reminded me of Se7en. Also I don't care what anyone says I love Zodiac aswell and I can't wait till Gone Girl.
10nomak That's the point. It's not fiction. It's based heavily on real life events. The Zodiac Killer existed. He killed. He got away with it. If they told you who the killer was, it wouldn't be true to the events that occurred.
An element of Seven that cannot be overlooked is it's musical score. It builds the dark, gritty feel of this film to a crescendo of fevered intensity while at the same time having moments of heartfelt warmth or haunted melancholy. This film has always had a "tumblers in a lock" feeling for me, where each part clicks into place perfectly.
I just finished watching this movie for the first time and when it ended I just sat on my couch in awe for a good 5-10 minutes watching the credits roll
God this movie is amazing. The best thing about it is the way you get images in your head about the sick things in this movie without Fincher ever actually showing a person being killed or anything. He puts everything in place but ultimately allows the viewer to use their imagination with it, which makes the movie even more haunting and twisted. Love this movie and love Fincher! I can't wait to watch your other reviews of his films, Chris.
I've not seen anyone appreciate the artistry of the closing credits for Se7en. Most people only remember the opening credits, which undoubtedly was excellent.
What the hell man? Did you not talk about the villain's amazing performance for spoiler reasons? I hope that's why cause otherwise you did not do that man justice. I didn't mention him by name in case it was for spoiler reasons :)
Just saw this last night. Really entertaining movie. Several minutes before the climax, I knew what was ultimately going to happen. But seeing it come full circle is still enthralling as hell. And hearing Kevin Spacey explain why he does the things he do makes you think twice about the world as it is, and how it operates.
Amazing review Chris. Your passion for movies is TRULY fantastic and i am so proud of your success! I love you Chris! Keep up the amazing work! I am ALWAYS watching.
"Drenched in dread" is a good way to put it. I couldn't agree with you more about Se7en. It's special, and I don't think I can bear to watch it a second time. It really gets in you.
Please, oh please review Memento. I can tell, just by this review that you love it and i do too. I also feel like Se7en to David Fincher is like Memento to Christopher Nolan. Their first film wasn't that amazing, (But Following is a trillion times better than Alien 3) then these directors got to make their own film with a better budget and better actors, to show their true potential. Now they are both among the Top 5 directors working today.
Fantastic review, Chris. This is IMO David Fincher's magnum opus and is also one of my favorite films of all time. The acting, writing, directing, cinematography, music, and tension were all top notch and the climax is one of the most nail-biting, suspenseful endings I've ever seen. Can't wait for more Fincher movie reviews!
Rixa Cherimoya I'm not referring to any movie from 89. I'm talking about the SE7EN. That's how good the ending was. It was so good, it affected me before it happened
Sir, Se7en came out in 95, so you couldn't have even known about the ending at that point because even FINCHER didn't know about it. Sorry. Flawed logic.
The history of how 7even finally came to be is super interesting. Not to give anything away, but it was almost a *COMPLETELY* different movie starring Sylvester Stallone.... don't think I need to say more.
i've seen it as a little child and i sweaar i thought the scene would have been in it before seeing it again when i got older, because that knife dildo photo left a deep impression on me
Burpy I was commenting on what YOU said about the film, my dear sir, and was saying that if someone wanted to actually see what happened, they would have to be a disgusting, sick person. If you were joking, great. I didn't understand that it was a joke, but fine. However, please don't respond to my comment on what YOU said by saying that I must be the "sicko". That's extremely disrespectful.
I watched for the first time last night (don’t ask me how!! I just didn’t know it existed) and i loved it soooooo much i want to erase it from my memory and watch it all over again. It was just PERFECT. The perfect amount of gore. Not too much that you can’t watch any more. Gave me room to breathe after the sloth scene. Run time wasn’t ridiculously long. Ending is just beyooooond. Just an all around perfect movie. I can’t really fault it. Of course the technical aspects are also crazy good.
In Borderlands 2, there’s a box that randomly spawns in some places. If you open it, you hear a voice say “AWW, WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!” and inside the box is a gun called Gwen’s Head. If a movie can get an elaborate reference like that in a game, I’d say it can safely be called iconic.
So glad you reviewed this, I've just watched it for the first time, wow... What an ending I was shocked and hoping it wouldnt be what I thought it was!!

Chris, would you be so kind as to give me those critic’s names.
And addresses.
This, silence of the lambs, and american psycho are my favorite freaking serial killer movies ever!!!!
So true! Those Are my favorites too :)
I honestly think silence of the lamb is overrated.
Tuosma It's a good movie! Anthonoy Hopkins gives a incredible performance:D But it's not as scary as it was when it came out IMO:)
Manhunter!
silence of the lambs is overrated
Not surprisingly, David Fincher has also directed Fight Club, Zodiac, and 7 episodes of Mindhunter. One of my favorites in the business.
David is one of my favorite directors as well...just the way he makes his movies are all so...unique?? And are just oscar-worthy films. Girl with the dragon tattoo has be my favorite movie made by him but Se7en was great as well. Nice video Chris :)
Dude se7en was a crazy movie
DaTruth2014 Indeed it was. That's one of the reasons why it was so damn good! :D
Please create a Donnie Darko Explained video.
Jake gyllenhaal is in a lot of confusing movies. Source code, Donnie darko, enemy
And people said inception was confusing, Donnie Dario is confusing as hell. I think it's all about alternate dimensions but still
I don't think 'Donnie Darko' should really be explained. Its a mesmeric film of stunning intelligence and confidence, and a triumph for the American independent movement; but to give the film an entirely logical and definite answer would be to do it a disservice.
robertlutece1912 exactly, we don't need things explained to us, we already have speilberg and tarantino dumbing down audiences.
robertlutece1912 I don't buy it, don't you feel awe when finding out how things work? To me it makes it all the more wonderful, from a tree to the universe to Donnie Darko.
Part of what scares me about this movie is that Morgan Freeman's character (Somerset) is a seasoned detective who has seen all kinds of horrific crimes. And yet, this serial killer genuinely frightens him and makes him question everything he's ever learned or experienced.
What's in the box?????!!!!!
DRM
His wife's head SPOILER BITCH!
The Mystery Box Dude what the fuck? thanks for spoiling the ACTUAL ending
10nomak Im just doing my job.
"It's a souvenir, your wife's pretty head!"
"One of the greatest movies of all time" is a tall order, but Se7en is certainly one of the most original and eery films of all time. Acted to perfection, tone is sublime. Certainly one of the defining films of the decade of the '90s.
Is it really? Name 5 better movies? Interested to hear what they are 🙂
There's one really similar, I think it's the bone collector
"Jennifer 8" (1992) is somewhat similar in style and mood. Great movie!
I love this review in a certain aspect; It's common knowledge that a certain actor didn't want to be mentioned in the film credits (until the end), and the fact that you didn't mention his name or his picture in this video just shows a lot of respect to that idea, and the respect to the ideology of film and the people who make these films.
Chris Stuckmann’s other two favorite movies are
1. Zodiac and
2. The girl with the dragon tattoo.
Both directed by David fincher.
Wow man didn't know you loved this movie so much haha
hahaha xD
I was just thinking, either this city is a gritty version of Gotham OR it's Hell.
WHAT'S IN THE BOXXXX....WHAT IN THE BOXX.......WHAT'S In the boxxxxxx.........................
Countered with:
How did it get burn...how did it get burn....HOW DID IT GET Burnnn.........
uh, a shark or something?
Seven is a masterpiece
Yeah! One of the best movies of all time!
Chris, I gotta tell ya man. I genuinely appreciate what you do. I've seen these movies countless times but you make me excited to watch them again. For that I thank you good sir.
Yes!!! Keep these ones coming! Love this segment!
Badass review Chris! One of my favorite movies as well. Also nice editing on this video. Especially when you got under the covers.
I absolutely love Se7en is one if my favorites. The reason I loved Prisoners so much was because it reminded me of Se7en. Also I don't care what anyone says I love Zodiac aswell and I can't wait till Gone Girl.
I agree 100% with all said.
Prisoners is an outstanding movie very underrated. Jake and Hugh were phenomenal and Paul Dano!
The review's too short, need more detail for this masterpiece.
ALSO ZODIAC
I haven't seen that yet
Zodiac was really good for first half but after RDJ was cut from the film it kinda lost me sine the actul killer was vague.
I have to say while Zodiac had some really powerful scenes I think it did drag a little bit by the end.
10nomak
That's the point. It's not fiction. It's based heavily on real life events. The Zodiac Killer existed. He killed. He got away with it. If they told you who the killer was, it wouldn't be true to the events that occurred.
Are you on the Robert Downey jr bandwagon?
An element of Seven that cannot be overlooked is it's musical score. It builds the dark, gritty feel of this film to a crescendo of fevered intensity while at the same time having moments of heartfelt warmth or haunted melancholy. This film has always had a "tumblers in a lock" feeling for me, where each part clicks into place perfectly.
That's actually the first thing I noticed about this film; it has amazing ambiance music.
Dr Famine
Agreed, the ambient score sets the tone and really sticks with you. Within 30 seconds, it will put you right back in to the movie's mood.
This is one of your best reviews, great job Chris.
Again you review one of my 10/10 movies, great job!
I get chills whenever I hear John Doe’s, “DETECTIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!!!” scream.
What the hell man? Did you not talk about the villain's amazing performance for spoiler reasons? I hope that's why cause otherwise you did not do that man justice. I didn't mention him by name in case it was for spoiler reasons :)
kevin spacey is as creepy irl as in his movies
Looking foward to your reviews, Chris. Fincher is one of my favorite directors.
This movie is fucked up but really good, Kevin Spader is great
Spacey*
*Spacey
Keyser Soze*
Frank underwood*
Vein Tootflute*
Sincerely, one of the best movies ever made. That's not hyperbole. A true masterpiece.
Why didnt he mention Kevin Spacey in the whole review his performance was so sick and twisted the acting was so fucking good...
Probably because he didn't want to reveal the identity of the murderer
Pancratius Of Old That makes sense, you're probably right :)
Zvonko Mocic
It's confirmed. He doesn't have his name displayed at the beginning of the movie at all, because they didn't want to give it away.
Fincher is a fucking genius man...
Zvonko Mocic
Slažem se
"Drenched in dread" is a good way to put it. I couldn't agree with you more about Se7en. It's special, and I don't think I can bear to watch it a second time. It really gets in you.
Please, oh please review Memento. I can tell, just by this review that you love it and i do too.
I also feel like Se7en to David Fincher is like Memento to Christopher Nolan. Their first film wasn't that amazing, (But Following is a trillion times better than Alien 3) then these directors got to make their own film with a better budget and better actors, to show their true potential.
Now they are both among the Top 5 directors working today.
I agree
Fantastic review, Chris. This is IMO David Fincher's magnum opus and is also one of my favorite films of all time. The acting, writing, directing, cinematography, music, and tension were all top notch and the climax is one of the most nail-biting, suspenseful endings I've ever seen. Can't wait for more Fincher movie reviews!
Se7en also has one of the best foot chase sequences in all of film and yet no one ever mentions it in their reviews. Inconceivable.
One of your best reviews, incredibly on the mark!
You should review A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES. It's also a bit noir, and awesome.
He's said that he watched it late and couldn't review it, he said he'd give it a B+
Didn't know it. In which video he said that? Thanks.
He tweeted it.
garner montgomery Ah, nice then.
Agreed really surprisingly good movie!
I'm excited for your David fincher reviews! Especially Fight Club :D
I've been saying Se7en has the greatest ending to a movie since '89.
what movie are you referring to from 89?
Rixa Cherimoya I'm not referring to any movie from 89. I'm talking about the SE7EN. That's how good the ending was. It was so good, it affected me before it happened
Down In Front xDDD oh, okay
Sir, Se7en came out in 95, so you couldn't have even known about the ending at that point because even FINCHER didn't know about it.
Sorry. Flawed logic.
I'm sorry you missed out on sarcasm, or just didn't bother to read my previous comment.
Also, sorry for your lack of sense of humor.
I've only noticed after like 4 years of this review being out that Chris never spoils the actor playing the killer, fucking brilliant
No wonder I had loved Gone Girl. Didn't know it was directed by David Fincher as well.
Really looking forward to the remaining Fincher reviews. Can you review Requiem for a Dream and Memento after that? Thanks.
Favourite film, director and actor (Brad Pitt).
I swear I thought of the city as William Somerset's own personal purgatory. He just relives the last two weeks of his retirement over and over.
The history of how 7even finally came to be is super interesting. Not to give anything away, but it was almost a *COMPLETELY* different movie starring Sylvester Stallone.... don't think I need to say more.
Stallone was best in "Copland".
My local theater just played this for the their classic movie night and holy shit this movie is gnarly. Especially the sloth murder. Bruh
My top 5 favorite david fincher films:
1: se7en
2: fight club
3: the social network
4: zodiac
5: the girl with the dragon tattoo
Agreed.
Awesome review Chris. I watched this for the first time last year. FUCKING Awesome!
EPIC T SHIRT!! And obviously, epic review. Good job.
“Oh. He didn’t know.” God that line is so haunting and effective
i wanted to see what happened with the lust.
i've seen it as a little child and i sweaar i thought the scene would have been in it before seeing it again when i got older, because that knife dildo photo left a deep impression on me
Darin Michael seem like you projecting your feelings onto my comment , my comment was a joke, but thank for letting us know how you really feel sicko.
You're sick
Burpy I was commenting on what YOU said about the film, my dear sir, and was saying that if someone wanted to actually see what happened, they would have to be a disgusting, sick person.
If you were joking, great. I didn't understand that it was a joke, but fine. However, please don't respond to my comment on what YOU said by saying that I must be the "sicko". That's extremely disrespectful.
Darin Michael you were extremely disrespectful you hipocrite
Chris you should do the same thing with Paul Thomas Anderson's movies. Inherent Vice is coming out in December
This is one of those movies that will stay with you forever after the credits roll.
Look at that, this video came out
Se7en years ago lol
Please do a film analysis for this movie! Thanks Chris, you've got quite an eye and great taste!
Definitely one of the best movies ever made. That and the usual suspects
djguy100 both have Kevin spacey
Zachary's Channel both made in 1995
In Borderlands 2, there’s a box that randomly spawns in some places. If you open it, you hear a voice say “AWW, WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!” and inside the box is a gun called Gwen’s Head. If a movie can get an elaborate reference like that in a game, I’d say it can safely be called iconic.
WHAT'S IN THE F*CKING BOX?!
It's been exactly 7 years this review came out
Ernest Hemingway wan once wrote: “The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.” I agree with the second part.
So glad you reviewed this, I've just watched it for the first time, wow... What an ending I was shocked and hoping it wouldnt be what I thought it was!!
Seven is a Masterpiece... Case Closed !!!
I love david fincher flicks (except for panic room), espcially se7en fight club social network & zodiac but I´m not sure if he can keep it up with this new one..
