    I love that companies REFUSE to use screws to hold down the rear cover, but literally cover in the insides with screws and then glue the battery in place, where they use plastic clamps to cover a connector. It is like they know which parts will need to be replaced and have made those parts as hard/dangerous to replace as possible...

    • @osamu_90
      @osamu_90 11 місяців тому +7

      Not trying to defend these practices, but you can't use screws to hold down the rear cover unless you fancy marketing a phone without water resistance (which I don't think is going to sell well at all).

    When you go to do the Flip 4 note that you may need to transfer the magnets from the original frame to the new one or the inner screen may go dark when turned on. When lifting screens you should use a iflex opening tool or a quanli opening tool, that metal pry tool with the handle is far too thick and will increase your screen failure rate when lifting. You should also inject IPA into the edges of the display as these screens are not effected by it and the adhesive with heat and ipa will literally fall off.

    While it might have 18 months warranty left on it, Samsung's flip phone warranty (Samsung Flip and Fold are in this category) doesn't cover the screen in any way, so any type of screen damage either accidental or manufacturer's defects have to be paid in full by the customer, unless you take out an extended warranty of sorts which in most cases costs far more than a screen replacement

    The different screw behind the screen isnt a screw holding in the plastic cover. it holds the sim tray in place. easy to keep separate if you lay your screws out in order. i usually throw a couple thin strips of double sided tape on the back of the battery to ensure it doesnt loosen in the future with exposure to heat. i would also recommend an AOD jig, makes opening most samsungs a dream. otherwise, excellent video as usual.

    Great repair job.
    When I begun with my electronic work, first as hobby and then as career, most of the devices I worked on used vacuum tubes. Successive technological transitions were painless though; but when we arrived to smartphone and tablets, the single thing I couldn't wrap my head around was... The use of glue to keep the devices together.
    Use of glue has been despised for generations of design engineers.
    If we had our way, all smartphones would have a 3 mm bezel all around, hiding the screws utilised to keep the screen and the back cover attached to the frame. I guarantee that no-one would complain of that bezel. Glue - blah!

    • @xonor13
      @xonor13 11 місяців тому +9

      Yup, glue is the worst design decision for repairability, but is the cheapest for production. I miss the good old days when iPhones used to have the bezel you mentioned, that were held together by two screws. When the screws were removed you could easily suction cup the screen off popping the retention clips. However, nothing beats the age when you could just pop the back off by hand in less than a second to replace your battery.

    Even though the repairability cost of folding phones is really high and it's unnecessarily complicated tech, I just got the Fold4 with a pretty nice discount, since the shop is selling out their stock to stock up on Fold5's, and I gotta say, the multitasking capabilities and just usability alone on that huge screen is just amazing. And then you fold it in half and it fits in any pocket. It's just awesome and well worth the money I paid for it, which is about half it's original launch price.

    With this Fold, I've seen this countless times. The inner screen protector starts to peel, so the customer tries to peel the protector off. Resulting in them digging too deep and destroying the screen.
    Samsung actually had to change the outer display adhesive as no technician could get it off with their provided display removal tool.
    Unfortunately my store broke quite a bit of them.

    I find it really funny that a guy who'se gluing the screen together with some stuff he bought at the hardware store projects this much confidence about his professionalism.

      what are you on about? I suppose you expect a glue fairy blessed by the gods of samsung, apple, and the like to come down from on high and bestow someone with some specialty glue that only they are allowed to hand out.

      I'm pretty sure they optimize the process to a micrometer in order to make sure they can get a very good yield that meets their water resistance spec in production.@@ram89572

    Very interesting. I wonder how much they're investing in the search for even stronger adhesives. The trivial saving for doing it yourself is another insult from Samsung, unless their technicians are paid a pittance.

    My phone recently got repaired, and now the back cover is slightly loose, as in I can easily put a spudger in between the inside and the back plate. Is this fixable by buying the same adhesive template you bought and heating / applying it myself? Really don't feel like losing my phone again for a week

    Congratulations, you are a "licensed technician"! I also noticed that the sim tray was attached via flex cable, does that mean it's upgradeable?

      I only hope that some day, there will be an available SIM tray upgrade, user installable, with a Micro SD card slot piggybacked to it. BTW, my LG V20 has that arrangement, although you have to open the door and lift the battery out to access it. BTW, my Fold 4 and V20 are networked together, along with the other wi-fi capable devices in my apartment.

    3:20 i have noticed that you sometimes cause damage because you use the wrong tools. When folding the copper back, use a soft tool or even your fingers, you wont leave grooves from the pick

    I wonder if the high temp adhesive is an anti repair measure.

    • @thehellkeeper5674
      @thehellkeeper5674 11 місяців тому +1

      It's not. It's a very thin adhesive so it needs high temp resistance otherwise the screen could fall off if the phone were to overheat for whatever reason

    • @HobkinBoi
      @HobkinBoi 11 місяців тому

      @@thehellkeeper5674 I don't recall most other devices having that issue with the screen being detached like that, and they don't require extremely high temperatures to soften up.

    • @thehellkeeper5674
      @thehellkeeper5674 11 місяців тому

      @HobkinBoi the outer screen on the folds is particularly thin and so is the bezel so there isn't mich room for the tape, the outer tape is less than 2mm wide

    You did a factory reset phone from recovery mode and then use it without previous owner pass (FRP) ? Or you just skipped that part( entering seller's info ) ?

    Yea definitely an expensive repair for DIY. I ended up taking the z fold 4 refurb to Cityphones (a samsung authorised repair place in melbourne) and yeah while it felt like paying twice, it still works out cheaper than a brand new z fold! When they do it, new batteries are alao included in the price.
