The inimitable Jaco, why oh why do we lose these talents so early. I had a dear friend, the best bass player I have ever played together with. Gone to cancer two years now, makes my heart ache to think of it. He loved Jaco, turned me a guitar player on to him, and like Jaco he always strived to stretch the limits of what could be done within the context of the music style he happened to be playing at the time. R.I.P. my Brothers.
One of my favorite songs of all times. Teen Town is my favorite song of all times. cucumber slumber w/ Alfonso Johnson on bass w / Weather Report. Stanley Clarke's, School Days, Silly Putty, Willie Weeks solo in Everything is Everything "Donnie Hathaway. Just to name a few.
This piece is one of my all-time best. If you want to see another one search for Chad Smith. He plays it at the Buddy Rich Memorial concert. Only the top drummers were invited.
Thats because he is playing an artificial harmonic, a fretted note that is dampened with the plucking hand. He can control the length because its just like a normal note, its all in the plucking hand. Sick Stuff, Jaco, Thank You!!! RIP...
Especially true since Jaco always listed Paul McCartny as one of his influences. Jaco was great, but people often forget what he stood for. In his own words, "keep an open mind man, as long as its good, who, cares." Jaco played in a variety of genre's including rock, country and western, jazz, funk, salsa, and classical.
Jaco was not the focus of the group, but his voice was so unique, that it stood out to be noticed! He was the most recognizably different player of his day, and I loved all of the players from that era, not just Jaco! Clarke, Squire, Jamerson, babbit, kay, Meeks, Mims, et al!
In the Dutch Language, there's a great saying: "Over smaak valt niet te twisten". Translated it means something like "You can't argue about personal taste (of food, of music, etc.)". I think that should be a message to all the haters trying to convince us to like another genre of music or another artist: "Over smaak valt niet te twisten." So don't waste your time trying.
i never was a fan of jaco's birdland. i have only heard the one studio of album version. i didn't like it at first but i love it. i always thought the drummer made this song have life. i like buddy rich's version. but the drummer changes and reminds me of smokin' from boston a little and jaco makes the song a lot more awesome.
I was born too late! ...again! I feel like the magic moments of music happened before these days. I Would easily swap hybrid engines, Facebook, 100MBit Internet and electric cigarettes for Wishbone Ash, Jaco Pastorius, Creedence and a genuiene meeting with actual musicianship. I've not quite reached 20 years btw...
douche noun 1. (Medicine) a stream of water or air directed onto the body surface or into a body cavity, for cleansing or medical purposes 2. (Medicine) the application of such a stream of water or air 3. (Medicine) an instrument, such as a special syringe, for applying a douche verb (Medicine) to cleanse or treat or be cleansed or treated by means of a douche
While Jaco always listed Paul McCartny as one of his influences, I think you should know that Jaco also composed a plethora of Jazz tunes. No, there is no comparison between genre's. Paul was Paul, and Jaco was Jaco, but Jaco was also a very accomplished composer.
Paul was a great song writer with a great voice, not a bass player...brilliant. Right place/right time. Jaco was pure natural self taught genius A jazz bassist he stand alone. Oh yeah and one messed up dude, manic depressive/bypolar whatever. In the end,Wrong place wrong time...
do mean the organ bass riff or the harmonics? :D if you mean the high notes that jaco plays, they are called harmonics. there are many ways to play them, i personally play them with pressing my right thumb against the string while plucking with my finger.
i don't think zawinul has enough keyboards, jaco enough groove in the world to run through, shorter anymore soul to display, and erskine any more erskine to be... fantastic all around
This isn't the original lineup for Birdland. They're missing Manolo Badrena, and Peter Erskine has replaced Alex Acuna. And I doubt Jaco was high on anything other than music here, although his erratic behavior was starting to show up around this time
Really miss "Weather Report" What a beautiful version of "Birdland" and the best bass player the world has ever seen, Jaco P... R.I.P.
Words can not express how great weather report was and its music still is. Really...it's beyond word!
Has to be one of the most amazing group of musicians to make music together... ever. Absolute magic.

Perhaps Jaco was a to fine carcter for this world. If you see his appearings on videos you find him as a very nice and humble person.
LOVE THIS VERSION...
@RLHubner
The drummer is the world famous Peter Erskine, who first recognized and supported Dave Weckl as a great talent, as Erskine himself is.
Dude, I love when Jaco sings, it's funny!
Especially true since Jaco always listed Paul McCartny as one of his influences. Jaco was great, but people often forget what he stood for. I love Peter Erskine's sweater

Joe Zawinul, Jaco Pastorius & Miles Davis... That's going to be my "reception committee" when I get there...
What a good that was!!!
Happy Birthday Jaco, miss you.
I've never heard a shuffle version of Birdland. Wow. Nice.

Jaco is simply the best, RIP.
Trippy, I make you absolutely right :)
i started as a guitar player, so i do false by using my index finger to set the note and pluck with my thumb.
I was born too late!

Bird did it, Birf did it! Ah Joey and Jaco, why did you have to leave us here alone?
@Account3of7 true i wish i was born earlier for all the good music so i could it live
My favorite joke is, "couldn't he afford a new bass?!" :-D
They proved that a band didn't need a hot lead guitar to make it happen.
Oh my !!,if this don't make ya wanna get up & dance around- yo as good as dead ,sure gets to me anyway.!!
I've never said this before because it's usually not warranted, but how can you dislike this?!
Classic!
joeyyyyyyy!!!!! thank belsebud those dudes met!
it's a shame talent like this died to young
Shorter was just checking in to be sure that the next | % | was the last. Inever knew that was Pastorius singing on that track until seeing this.

I think "The Chicken" is more of a get up and dance tune, this one seems more like a sit back and relax sort of tune.
Yeah he was more crazy than an addict. Anyway it was a great shame that he died so young, he was an incredible talent.
@repsac371 Only Wayne Shorter sounds like that, but yes, that's what he looks like as well. He's an angel btw. peace
Also, El grupo did a cool cover if you're into that jazz/fusion/gocrazyandhavefun stuff
Whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! That's all I can say.
@trojanluck88 god bless jaco im shure the world loved him

@ZOMBIELANDakaUSA i love your username so much
i thought peter erskine was wearing a shirt....
I totally agree with this one. Jaco was the better bassist but paul is the better songwriter composer. They are both equal musically.
Could Jaco ever pull his pants even higher?! LOL
just joking. respect.
This isn't the original lineup for Birdland. They're missing Manolo Badrena, and Peter Erskine has replaced Alex Acuna.
And I doubt Jaco was high on anything other than music here, although his erratic behavior was starting to show up around this time
