What struck me the most from all this is that, in the end, Valentino himself, the guy who played such a significant role for Lamborghini for 40 years, in the end he said he couldn't afford the car that was made as a tribute to him and had his name on it. That's a huge fail on Lamborghini's part.

  • @billjanke72

The most amazing thing about this whole story is that Valentino said that he couldn't afford it and they didn't give him one. Why make a special edition and name it after your test driver then not even give him one or let him finance one? This is a HORRIBLE marketing blunder on Lamborghini's part. The car could have been the "Golden Watch" for a retirement gift. Such a missed opportunity. Even if they had a contract that he needed to go around and promote them as a "Consultant" I don't think he would have cared.

What a terrible blunder by Lambo. Now it's all very 1st world problems and all that, with a horrible atrocity going on in Ukraine etc. But this story strikes me as really poor form by a famous brand towards a lifelong servant. If Lamborghini was alive this would not have happened. And how did this guy allow the company (now a soulless entity) to plaster his name on cars and make money on his name without himself getting at least a bloody car as 'a gold watch' on his retirement. Had they all been manual (like they should have been), it would have been easy to explain them to a customer. "This is a "drivers" Gallardo. It is for the person who wants to control the car, not for the person who wants to look flash in a car that is really doing all the work for them. This is the Gallardo that even among other Gallardo owners makes you stand out. That's because this car listens to you, whereas the rest of these take your imput "under advisement". "
Any potential buyer who fancies himself an actual driver is going to want that, because he doesn't want a reason someone could say the car is doing all the work. It challenges the buyers skill, and most of the people financially affluent enough to buy these cars do NOT like being told that they aren't good enough.

    • @MrCROBosanceros

I agree with you, but! I live on Canada's west coast and most of the people who are buying cars like Lamborghini and other supercars are Chinese. Most of them look like teenagers and usually, they have stuffy toys on the dashboard. I don't think they want a manual transmission.

Once you're buying lamborghinis, cars are a status symbol not a mode of transport or fun. If people would've bought them manuel they would've made them manuel but the market showed they wouldn't sell. Its quite sad really, the manuel deserves to be put in these amazing cars

I had the pleasure of meeting Valentino in early 2013 when I was instructing at Circuit of The Americas for the Lamborghini Running of The Bulls. Valentino was there, acting as an ambassador for the brand and couldn't have been nicer. I've been a fan of him since before the 60 Minutes article, having read about him in Car and Driver back in the day, so to actually see him in person was so exciting! I was able to speak with him and have a photo with him atop the tower. COTA has very strict rules, and wouldn't let anyone, even Valentino, drive on track during the event without an instructor. So my buddy Patrick whom I had invited to fly out from California and work the event with me, ended up riding shotgun with Valentino for his hot laps. After he came back into the pits, I told my buddy it was so unfair that I invited him to work the event, and that HE was the one who got to ride with Valentino. My buddy was confused, and asked me who that was. He had no idea who Valentino Balboni was! Valentino was so humble and unassuming, never making a deal of it or acting like the automotive legend that he is! Yes, it is unforgivable that Lamborghini would make a tribute model named after this man, and never gift him one. Thanks for the story Ed!

and you know, I've never actually SEEN that man drive one actually, just pose next to it, which is probably why all the cars made under him suck.
kinda like what would lambo be like if it was made under Robert McNamara, instead of Lee Icococa, bland boring, and stupid, and if anything cool got through you knew it was a mistake that got through when he wasnt looking.

@@AP13P I ment in the sense that they've never changed the formula and done something different such as the Estoque or the Asteron Concept cars, they just always played it safe by making cheap knock off's of the cars that made them great
which is primarily the wedge shaped countach and its midengined format, just detuned and made easier to drive and easier to live with
which with a car where its whole appeal is its as raw as possible, flies in the face of what made it fun.
as when they took over they did three things, they started using metalic colors in place of hard solids to soften the edges of the cars, the rounded off all the edges and remove the color accents
and then put a heavy 4 wheel drive system on the cars to keep their road manners more managable, but with this they went too far and made them seem far more like audi's than lamborghini's
and the sound of the V10 engine didnt help either, it sounds nothing like a lamborghini should sound
and most ironically the audi offering the R8, not only looks better and features far more italian styling with its color accents, and features the engine that should have been in the gallardo from day one, the V8, which sounds so much better
its interior looks far more like a lamborghini should, while the lamborghini one just looks boring and dreary, like you'd expect from an audi car
hell if you look at Hoovie's car, the armadillo as I call them, the Murcie, I swear I have seen those perforated seats in a volkswaggen from the same time that car was made
vs say, look at the Tahiti Blue countach James May took for a spin in top gear, like you can change the colors all you like but it just doesnt look anything like it should.
like the design language and materials are all wrong, with winkleman gone however they are starting to get back on their feet and starting to look like lambo's again,
the countach, the new one, not withstanding, although even then that thing is far more based on the concept car than the actual car itself
which they ironically rebuilt a replica of, although with some work, and a few body kit people taking a crack at it, it might actually end up looking like a good looking car towards the end.
hell maybe all someone needs to do is redo the front clip and break up that front grill and respray it in a matt or a semi gloss red and it might look half okay really.
as they did what they always did, a metalic white sheen to detune the edges, so the design isnt coming through like it should.
like imagine that with the two tone accents of the 50th aniversary aventador they made, the only winkleman era aventador I ever liked, it might actually look pretty good with some work.
plus theirs gotta be some body options for it that can help it make look right in the front, as its funny the rears and the 3 quarters are fine, its just the front that seems off while on the lamborghini sien the car its based off of, the fronts fine and the rest looks wrong lol
like they should have just split the difference and called it something else lol

Mercedes and McLaren made 75 special editions of the Stirling Moss SLR. They were the final run of the SLR, all roofless speedsters, and they're worth between $2-3 million in the current market.
I don't have source on this, but I heard that when he was asked about the car he had no idea what the interviewer was talking about. Mercedes and McLaren seemingly put his name on it and he was never told anything about it.

I had dinner with Valentino after an event in St. Louis. Super nice guy, a great storyteller and a great ambassador for Lamborghini. It's a travesty he wasn't given one of the cars with taxes paid and free lifetime service. And IF they had made them all in manual trans they'd be THE most valuable and collectible Gallardo that was made. Look at what people are paying for manual trans Ferrari / Lamborghini etc. today.

Sounds like the equivalent of giving an oil exec a hybrid or EV for his retirement, then decaling his name on the side. Great story as always and hopefully the exec who approved this travesty (or wouldn't sign off on giving him a car) got similar treatment at their retirement.

If they weren't jumping up and down to get out of the 5.0L and into a 5.2L... I just don't know what to say about that. The 5.0L was a traditional supercar motor, which meant that it was fragile and had a limited lifespan, while the 5.2L was (and still is) a truly reliable production car engine that was designed and built to actually be driven.

Well, sounds like him and you both got robbed. You got screwed on that auction and he got screwed because some bean counter couldn't figure out that writing off one car in the marketing budget was the right thing to do. This sounds like when GM stopped handing Burt Reynolds a Trans Am every year. Even when Pontiac was shuttered, they should have still sent him a Vette or a CTS-V or something else from Cadillac. The Bandit sold more cars than any one man ever did. He still selling them. :)

Turns out someone came in having seen it on the lot and offered market price and the salesman sold it.

Weird how a Lamborghini enthusiast didn't jump at the chance to buy Balboni a car. You would not only get to meet and presumably hang out with the legend, but could have likely had him autograph and maybe even hot lap your personal car which would give it provenance of its own. That story would be worth every penny of the purchase price to buy the man a car.

Maybe you should check out how many vinyl records are being sold nowadays... I'm far from a niche listener and I'm listening to one right now. They've outsold cds for years now. Walk through any Target and you'll see an aisle of them... they wouldn't do that sort of merchandising if they weren't making appropriate sales off that space.
