No it's not, Moe Shalizi spent the whole 20 minutes talking about marshmello being a brand and a character. I mean I dig his songs but there are many, many artists out there on Soundcloud better than him, but they didn't work on their brand, so no, It's all about what you look like.
Look at Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, and so on, but then look at TheFatRat, Illenium, Tobu, Jim Yosef, and many others, and you'd realize it's all about the character

Marshmello is a phase that every human, kid or teenager or adult or old, has to get through. Phase of happiness, phase of cheerfulness, phase, when you realize, that you actually can do everything to prove to the world what you're capable of and that you're useful anyway. He really invested much in himself, he got the fame, glory and success and he showed us that if only we'll put our hearts into it, we can reach any goal and make everything we wanted to. I think that many people would like to be closer to him more often, because he really is incredible, sweet, talented and just true guy, who's a living proof that everyone's life can be amazing and memorable, if you'd just "keep it mello".
