Add Bluetooth to an old stereo receiver for $2 (No soldering)

  • This is a quick review of an inexpensive Bluetooth audio receiver. It turned out to be a great product! For less than the cost of a cup of coffee, you can add Bluetooth to your vintage audio receiver or old pair of computer speakers. All it needs is micro USB power and an audio cable - no soldering required. The one thing it doesn't come with is a case, but it is so small and lightweight, I was able to tie the audio/power cables down behind the receiver and it holds the board in place. This will be a welcome addition to my Yamaha R-N301 and outdoor speakers, which did not come with Bluetooth capability. The chip that this thing is based on has a logo that looks like "JL" and the number "AS19AP1Z420-25C4".

    This is a great solution. I'm comfortable around circuit boards and electronics, and this is just a no-brainer. I might try to find a small plastic box but this is so small I can tuck it back and no one will see it anyway!

      I just checked that site and today they have some Bluetooth modules in the $2-3 price range with a case included! Anyway, good luck and thanks for watching/commenting on the video.

    Thanks for this video, I just installed on to both of my OEM radios of my Honda Prelude and CRV!
    I had to solder into the L and R channel of the Prelude's radio since there were no rca cable inputs but otherwise, it was easy.

    Thanks for this. It's very helpful. But I am trying to solve the opposite problem, and wondering if you can suggest anything. I want to use my vintage receiver to broadcast to remote bluetooth speakers. I want to play my vinyl, tape, cds on my stereo and send it to bluetooth speakers somewhere else in the house. I am already using my Aux for my cd player. Maybe I can add a splitter there? Or at one of my two tape monitor outpusts? Many thanks!

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, they make affordable Bluetooth transmitters. The UA-cam channel Techmoan recently reviewed such a device in a video about transmitting from a vintage audio system to a sound bar. (Search Amazon for "1Mii Bluetooth Transmitter" to see the device he was using...). You should be able to connect a bluetooth transmitter to the tape monitor record/out jacks on the receiver, and it should transmit whatever signal the receiver is playing: phono, aux or tuner. (Transmitting a tape signal might be a little tricky since you are using the tape monitor outs you'd have to set it in copy 1->2 mode.). Anyway thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @DrFlippin

    how is the sound quality? - Is it quite a step down from a direct wired analog input? I'd like to add decent sound (spotify) from my phone to my old stereo receiver. Can anyone recommend a good set-up if this $2 rig isn't it for my need? 🤔

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  2 роки тому

      Techmoan recently did a video about a "1mii b310" Bluetooth receiver that is nicer than this, but still under $100: ua-cam.com/video/ZlI3yB2N9Pg/v-deo.html
      For an even higher quality (and more expensive) setup, check out an "Arylic S50 Pro+" which has been positively reviewed by a lot of audiophiles on UA-cam...

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  2 роки тому

      Not sure about the new version, but this board uses USB 5V so to power it from 12V you would need something like a car charger... Thanks for watching!

      I agree, grab any obsolete 5v car charger (eg iPhone 3 or 4) take it out of the case, chop off the stretchy cable, a bit of wire and hot glue and you're done 👍

      Thanks for watching! If you search Amazon for "bluetooth 12v car transmitter" you can find several options for around $20 which would take the Bluetooth signal and transmit it on an unused FM Frequency to your car radio. (Never tried this myself, but no reason why it shouldn't work...)

    Any suggestions for adding this to a 15 year old stereo that does NOT have any sort of auxiliary input, either 3.5mm OR coax cable? No "input" whatsoever. ONLY headphones connection! (How frigging lame!) Using in garage, extended speaker wiring so that the garage has a TRUE stereo effect, with speakers at each end of the garage. Very nice sound overall, would just LOVE it to be able to have at least a wired and/or Bluetooth connection to stream XM radio through!

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  3 роки тому +2

      Hmmm that's a tough one. Without having to do any internal wiring on the stereo, one thing you might try is to find an FM transmitter, then hook the output of the Bluetooth receiver to the input of the FM transmitter. Actually, a quick search on Amazon for "fm transmitter" shows they have devices for under $20 that would take Bluetooth and transmit it to the stereo. The only drawback is since they are made for cars, they have those 12-volt plugs - but can probably be powered by a 12VDC wall adapter... I haven't tried something like this before, I just put one of those devices on my Amazon list, maybe that would be a good subject for a future video.... Thanks for watching!

    • @Guillotines_For_Globalists
      @Guillotines_For_Globalists 3 роки тому

      @@ACBMemphis Thanks for the suggestion. I actually do have a 12 volt to cigarette plug "dongle" from an old Garmin GPS circa 2007 when they used to combine them in box. Basically it's a low amperage 12 volt wall adapter but instead of having a proprietary power plug it just has the usual cigarette plug on the other end. That may work to power an automotive style FM transmitter from 120 volts household.
      However with that being said I remember my friends who had FM transmitters back in the day in their cars, they were always full of trouble. Static, distortion, etc. I always went for the wired route - either replacing my head unit with one that had an auxiliary in port, or using the in-line antenna adapter with a switch to select between auxiliary in and FM antenna input.
      Unless technology has changed, the FM transmitters of 15 years ago really sucked ass!
      PS, the stereo in question is a TEAC MC-D3. It has a tape player (which doesn't work - tape adapter would have been the preferred route!) and a CD player as well. But absolutely no input line connections. Only a single headphones out connection on the front. For the era of this stereo I find it odd that it doesn't have an aux input, actually. Everything else from this era did. Early-mid 2000s to be exact. It's unusual. They must have really cheaped out on this to omit it.

      @@viva_jaime I would be very, very careful attaching to old 1960s internal wiring. An easier solution would be just leave it running all the time it should use very little power. But hypothetically speaking, I'd probably cut the end off an extension cord and tap into switched AC power within the unit, i.e. a panel light or something and just put a 5v USB power brick inside the cabinet.
