I can already imagine how a dnd campaign with a Copper Dragon would go:
    - Need strong magical item
    - Hear a nearby metallic dragon has it
    - Metallic means nice equals possibility of trade
    - Meet dragon, gain quest instead
    - Go on an arduous journey
    - Near the end meet a dude who researches dragons
    - Hear him mention about copper dragons' tendency to fuck with people
    - See as the realization slowly hits the players faces

    • @FanOfMostEverything
      @FanOfMostEverything 5 років тому +839

And then, to make sure the players don't kill you, have the researcher turn out to be the dragon. After all, he's going to want to be able to see their faces.

Copper dragons are the best! All their things are hilarious. Look at the text for the area surrounding their lair:
"Tiny beasts such as rodents and birds that are normally unable to speak gain the magical ability to speak and understand Draconic while within 1 mile of the dragon’s lair. These creatures speak well of the dragon, but can’t divulge its whereabouts.
    "
    also
"Intelligent creatures within 1 mile of the dragon’s lair are prone to fits of giggling. Even serious matters suddenly seem amusing."
    ALSO
"Magic carvings of the dragon’s smiling visage can be seen worked into stone terrain and objects within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair."
    Like what the fuck!!

  • @connordarvall8482

Essentially, you can sum up every metallic dragon by what they do with message spells:
Gold: Want to know if you've found any evil.
Silver: Is writing a "biography" about your travels with maybe a bit of artistic license.
Bronze: Just making sure you're not doing anything illegal.
Brass: No reason, just wants to chat for a few hours.
Copper: Yells a meme from 5 years ago and hangs up.

I am currently using the opening town of a campaign as a Home for Ancient Metallic Dragons in disguise.
It was a normal City State; then the Copper dragon became a Tavern owner and Bar Keep to both protect her hoard and to get adventurers to leave her be about treasures and things. Then a Bronze Dragon removed a tyrant that had led the town under guise as Reguileoldt (read as re-guy old) Endeskaise (read as In Disguise) the first... every 49 years he shifts form to be the next and hires family's to act the part until a certain age is reached then returns them with lots of cash to there homes else where.
Any who, An Ancient Silver acts as the black smith and clothes maker/cobbler so he can make set pieces for his hero patrons. An Ancient Brass Dragon is the Port head so he can converse with the most people about business is fine because its still people willing to talk. The Gold dragon is head of security. other races know nothing of this and buy into the disguises. Most other dragons will sense them if they came and if they are willing to play nice they are welcome to live in Ainscrad.
The players just found out about the Barkeep... Tonight I see what they do to her.

@@justafan9206 Phil "Harmony" Anthropist; is my most unique Bard character.
amongst other things he is a Bard, and an Albino Tiefling. The thing is he has cloth wrapped around his face so people can see his mouth and hair; he always wears an elaborate set of Eastern Clothing (Think 1600's Samurai clothes). and a pair of Alabasta spider silk gloves.
All people see him playing is a weird 13 string instrument that looks like a wider version of a Guitar as its thickness is to accomodate the extra strings... what people hear though is a full set of instruments and back up singers, yet its just him.
He is in fact not a humble Bard, nor a kind hearted traveling priest, nor any other of his many identities he uses... for you see he is a deeply cursed immortal King, having been under his curse for over 10K years; and thanks to this curse he cannot solve any national level or worse threat, or even act against the forces of Evil directly; despite being a level 100 ultra hard core badass of 5 classes maxed at 20 each; he must observe as the world crumbles around him and his ideals of Harmony and peace are robbed from him until an impossible task can occur.
He is an NPC I made for a one shot like mini series style campaign. He was cursed by Cronus the God of time because all those years ago plus a few Phil promised to make Cronus a house hold name and a major religon in order to become ultimately powerful and know many things and topal the Tyrant that once ruled this land... Cronus pulled through on his end but Phil lied and said he owed his victory to no God but good old fashioned try hard training. Well Gods would obvious curse you for such blatant disregard of there assistance.
Now he is cursed to see every heroes attempt to save his people, and is forgotten by those that look away from him, so until a hero realizes his situation despite the many Earth shattering threats that follow him; and that despite Cronus sicking a Chrosphinx on them every time (An advanced and exceptionally annoying creature I made. Its MO, is to max range spell cast into the parties camp or rooms at the Inn; preventing rest periods from happening, actively trying to kill the party with exaustion... then as a legendary action it loops time up to a week before with a dream lie haze over memorys of that time frame.
However the party I used it against lucked out as I rolled a 1 on its stealth check. It may have Greater invisibility at will but it stubbed a toe type of thing and made noise... and well its designed to be weak to direct confrontation since its so stealthy and capable of maintaining long time use of magic for winning battles of Attrition.
A favored tactic of theirs is to caste Tsunami on a camp site to wash tents and gear into rivers nearby. Using Delayed Fireball at a point where the campfire hides the budding fireball for 10 rounds to blast burnning shrapnel everywhere to burn peoples things and attack. Or summoning a flock of faeries (quickling's) to harass the party all night or to scatter weapons and gear and other general mayham.
It can cast 9+ times a day each spell level except 8th and 9th which is still like 7ish times so it is pretty hard to deal with multi concentration spells as well as all kinds of summons and spells of harassment.
On top of that annoying monster I had 6 other plots going on at once to act as distraction for the party so the simple task of seeing whats wrong at a local shrine is low priority and overlooked.
Those plots included a Gnoll Super Invasion; Goblins hunting the locals to treat them as livestock and provide food bribes against the Gnolls; Hag Covanents working with Cultists to raise Demon armies; Evil Gods trying to incarnate... you know light work for 16th level characters.
Phil was the Bard in the tavern the campaign starts at. He is playing "Yesterday" by the Beetles and everyone starts with a memory roll to see if they remember that they have already woke up or whatever here as Deja Vu hits them; that was my only clue about the looping time monster's pressence.
Phil actually has a pretty severe mutation from his demonic heritage... each opening on his body is a mouth and each hand has a mouth also; so 2 eyes/a nose/2 ears/ass/dick/each hand/each breast/belly button=12 mouths total and each mouth can replicate any one sound.
I think I might recycle him for another campaign but as far as bards go he was the one I had most fun making.

They literally acclimate themselves into mortal societies and live as the mortal races. Having families, and careers, and all that stuff. Then when people realize how weird it is that this person hasn't aged in 50 years, they move on and shed that life like a snake sheds it's skin. Literally, they shed the memories from their minds so they don't get all their past lives confused with each other.

4e may get a lot of flak, but the dracomonicons were some excellent source books. From the metallic one we got my favorite dragon: Mercury Dragons. They're basically like a chaotic neutral PC who easily gets board and starts doing weird shit to see what will happen, but if that person also lived in a volcano and could turn into Large or smaller creatures whenever they wanted. They also basically get Sneak Attack damage and their breath weapon makes them invisible to anyone hit by it for a short time. And of course they can just melt into a puddle and peace out down the drain if their latest "social experiment" didn't exactly go as planned. Because mercury. They look pretty cool, too.
Runner-up is Orium dragons, because they breathe snakes.
