This kind of reminds me of a song my daddy wrote, I think yall may have covered it. The Blackbirds and the Crows. Same premise anyway. Ya'll are excellent musicians. I miss my dad so much, Don Humphries.
Thank you for doing his song.🕊

Carolyn sounds like a former girl friend of mine who ended up the same way.Head on collision with an 18 wheeler.

In much of the south back then, and even in some places today, the age of consent was 14 with a parents permission. 40-24 is 16, 30-16 is 14. So this would have been barely legal at the time. For most of human history before this, it wouldn’t have been seen as such a problem as today, but we like to give long childhoods today. And that doesn’t stop this from being really fucking gross.

Unfortunate still a reality for some women. Even as certain women age, they are taught to look for an old(er) man. I find that old way of thinking offensive.
In the case of Carolyn, she did the right thing. He plucked her from her childhood and he reaped what he sowed. Shame on him.
I know it's just a song but there is truth in the lyrics.

Jesus christ i can’t believe they wrote this song and performed it. He groomed a child and still positions himself as the victim of the relationship. Guess you really can’t judge the actions of the past (the 90’s) with the standards of today (30 years later).

Brother this song is much much older than this recording and it isn’t written by the people performing 😂

In Texas as late as the Early 2000s the Age of consent was 14 with her father’s consent.
This song was written probably a century ago in it’s first iterations and back then a 14 year old bride was completely acceptable if not a little strange. Most women still got married in their 16-20 year old range back then, and most men between 18-30
