40 years later, this special event still brings me to tears. Two great leaders, both experiencing setbacks, misjudgements even. Both loved and cared for their country and citizens. Seemed the Reagan's deeply liked and respected both Indira and Rajiv.

After all is said and done, current PM came from a less than humble background and grew up in a time of poverty, sanctions from the west, challenges of being a developing economy, etc. He did fight all odds and manage to complete his academic journey and political education but for obvious reasons lacks the fluency in English unlike Indira Gandhi (R.I.P). She, on the other hand was the daughter of a very prominent political figure who had seen the rest of the civilised, elevated and golden-era blessed world. Whilst these were the reasons as to how she appeared refined, she did have some flaws. It is said that she allowed corruption to exist to some extent and even enjoyed the privileges that came with the power vested in her. Current PM may have had to allow corruption to exist for the reason pounding the mind of every idealist: We have a very VERY complex political machinery. But he is no less than a man of action and rigidity. Look where the county stands globally post 2014. We’re the only subcontinent that is not in as bad a shape as our eastern, western and southern neighbours. We’re the 3rd (or 4th) most powerful Asian country. You could credit the efforts of past 20th century leaders for that, but the way I see it, most of the credit for today’s situation goes to PM Modi. He’s by far the best leader we’ve ever had.

How old are you young man, just wanted to let you know I personally had a chance to listen to her when she came to my hospital, listening to her personally was magical, she walked away from me and smiled and left, one opportunity to meet this great lady,
I am fortunate to witness it
I had the opportunity to see her in person four times from a reasonably close distance. First time as an eight years old kid in early 1972 when she visited Kolkata after India's decisive victory over Pakistan in December 1971. She was traveling in an open Willys Jeep her hands folded in Namaste gesture with the crowd cheering her and showering flowers and garlands at her. She was stopping at important intersections to greet people. Then as a young man in 1980 at an election rally in huge open area called Park Circus maidan near our place. She gave such a great and mesmerizing speech. Then again in 1981 during an official visit to Kolkata when she was traveling seated next to the driver in a white Ambassador car with the windows down. Again in Kolkata in 1983 when she was visiting an auditorium in Kolkata to attend some function. We took up position on the wall of a building just opposite the auditorium main get just to get a glimpse of her. She got down wearing a simple whitish cotton saree with green borders, and waved to us with that brilliant smile. Mrs Gandhi was an example of grace, dignity, modesty, simplicity charm, elegance, beauty, intelligence and kindness personified. A woman of great substance and statesmanship. Although a lot of tirade against her by the present Government is doing its round in the social media and misguiding the present generation, she should be fondly remembered by all Indians. She had an immense contribution in the growth and development of India.
