CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bernie (Angela Bassett) ransacks John's closet and burns his clothes along with his car.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A surprise Hollywood hit, this film is based on the novel of the same name by Terry McMillan and centers on four well-to-do African-American women and their relationships with men and one another. All of them are "holding their breath" until the day they can feel comfortable in a committed relationship with a man. Robin (Lela Rochon) is the long-time mistress of Russell (Leon), who keeps reneging on his promise to leave his wife for her. She dumps him to find a man she can have to herself, but her dates with a reliable but unattractive business partner (Wendell Pierce) and a drug addict (Mykelti Williamson) send her back to Russell. Savannah (Whitney Houston) is a successful television producer who also believes that her married lover Kenneth (Dennis Haysbert) will leave his wife. Bernadine (Angela Bassett) is a wealthy woman who abandoned her own career to raise a family. Her husband is now leaving her to marry a white woman. Gloria (Loretta Devine) is a beauty salon owner and single mother raising a teenage son. After years alone, she falls in love with a new neighbor, Marvin (Gregory Hines). The women share their stories over lunches and conversations at Gloria's salon.

I swear that Angela Bassett is legendary!! She made you feel Bernadette's grief and mad at the same time!!! This scene of a woman scorn will always be ICONIC!!
She should have got an Oscar for this part ... lol lol !!
You are right about that it will ALWAYS be remembered in my mind.
I felt her pain
Yes she did.
Angela Bassett, you either love her or have no idea who she is.
That moment you find out she was told to improvise this whole scene.
Ojo Momoko really!?!? oh wow!!
Ojo Momoko seriously??
Ojo Momoko REALLY😲
Are you for real? Angela has some damn good, grade A+ acting skills. How the Fuc did she not get an Oscar for this?
Speechless ... lawd she is beyond excellent....
“Well guess what John?! You’re the muthafuckin improper influence!” 😍😍
That’s my part lol
She KILLED this scene I have chills
Lol my favorite part!!!
I read this right when she said it lol
This is why women especially black women need to put ourselves FIRST !
Yes 👏🏾 we have no other choice
Child, this has nothing to do with "black" which is.why this.movie.gets no love. People are sick of hearing about "black black black" like seriously are black women the only type of.women to.get cheated on? Get real and get out of fantacy land.
@@whitealliance9540 ...This movie was about the struggles of black women. What are you taking about?
@@whitealliance9540 Why are you even here?
White Alliance
Until you've walked in the shoes of a black woman, close your mouth.
"GET YO SHIT, GET YOOO SHIT!"
This scene will never get old.
Eleanor Aristide Lol😂 that's why she get paid
I don’t know why but that particular phrase popped in my head randomly. Now here I am
@@casr.b.2411 I actually had to use it!
A great scene
😂
The fact that she didn't even get an Osar nod. Shows that the Academy does not even make an effort to pay attention to black movies.
most of the academy members are white older men.
i'm white and i agree with you a hundred percent
Christopher Cherry this scene hurts
Christopher Cherry totally agree with you! Hey and Loretta shoulda gotten a nod. If this movie woulda been made now they woulda gotten nods. And prob wins. Angela shoulda gotten that academy award for wlgtdwi?
I have said the same thing for years. Anyone who follows the academy knows that this scene alone should have garnered her a nomination at least.
Best movie scene ever of a woman scorn...A woman who gives you your children, bend over backwards for you, there for your highs and lows, who tries her best to look attractive, keeps her mind and ambitions in check, gave you her best yeara, stays loyal and honest....And it's still not good enough for whatever reason. She really shoes her pain, betrayal, anger and confusion here, I love this.
KatKost Most definitely 💯💯💯
True
Facts
KatKost I’ve had a similar event in my life! Before my husband came into my life, I spent 3 1/2 years devoted to a man (even got engaged, but told him I wanted to finish getting my bachelor’s degree before planning marriage), only to find out from his MOTHER he was engaged to another woman at the same time a week before I was a bridesmaid at my best friend’s wedding! To make matters worse, I even found their engagement announcement in the local paper for the county where his other fiancé lived!
I didn’t burn the stuff he had left at my apartment, but I sure wanted to! Instead, practicality and sanity prevailed-I sold what could be sold, and his clothes ended up in a Goodwill donation box at the mall. The ring he’d given me was later used for a down payment on the ring that my husband gave me, and we just celebrated our 20th anniversary this year. So if I ever bump into my ex again, I’ll flip the script and THANK him for being a lying, two-timing, chickenshit Mama’s boy!
Men give women children not women give men children.
Ain't no way she was acting. This scene gives you goosebumps and chills man
The voice of all betrayed women right here. Thank you Angela.
YAS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you betta say it. This scene truly speaks to the emotional betrayal many women have and experience.
Alrune La Brune I think all women can relate to this at some point we tend to give everything up for love sometimes and get shafted in the end. A truly stellar performance one of my favourite actresses
Yep
@@goddessravenlovelife7452 Burn my things down because you're upset, you'll go missing. The police will never find you.
@@alphabogeyman7462 I wouldn’t expect anything less from someone who endorses violence against women no matter what they do. Your comment is even more concerning.I don’t agree with the way she handled it but I understand why she feels that way and at least her anger is not been taken out on a woman like most domestic violence cases which I might add some involve men being victims of other men .
Angela should have 10 oscars she so damn talented it truly is incredible
Ayysia Dansby ain't she I like her in this movie she was bad in this movie
She's a good actor
RahynHollywoodVEVO he's a good actor too!
Shes amazing
The Oscar's sucks, many people should of have gotten oscars. Angela Basset and Cicely Tyson are one of those few I've read and seen do stunning works in movies and yet got only a few oscars. It's a shame really.
This scene always give me the chills because you feel the pain and hurt in her heart. She should have won a Oscar for this role alone.
Angela is a force of nature on screen. She should have been rewarded with Oscars and Globes...... gifted actress.
That's what happens when you give your heart, soul all yourself to someone and they betray/ backstabbing you ..done!
Wow! Way to go on generalizing all black women over a movie lol. This comment is not racist at all. Sorry to bust your little bubble, but all women from all races get cheated on, not just black women. And each woman reaction is different from the other (whether black, white or Asian). If you have issues with black women, deal with it and deal with your anger, hate or whatever you have there - bc it seems there's alot of judgment on this subject on your end, and especially black women. One or 5 black women reaction or attitude is not all black women attitude toward life or relationships. Life is full of backstabber, cheaters, liars, etc...They come in all colors and sizes - who deserves to be cheated, hurt, backstabbed bc theyre outspoken?. Best wishes
Truth hurts doesn't it... you mad or nah?
C Aubrey your vocabulary is not that bright. First of all the word generally means "generally" not all.
Secondly this is just a scoach of how black women used to clown black men in the media. They got on the Phil Donahue show, Rowanda Show, Ricci Lane, Steve Harvey, Queen Latifah, Wendy Williams, Rapheal all of the same rhetoric on national TV that *black man ain't shit!*
Oprah built an Empire off of this she still is going around today saying that black men are too weak and intimidated if women in their 40s can't find a man
But this is an inconvenience to you so you'll just act like this never happened and play the victim even though black women are praising this movie in the comment section but they'll get mad and throw in uproar if there was to be a Hollywood video of black man clowning them.
Thats what happen when evil people betray you. God dont like ugly behavior---there are consequences.
they need to bring back the black movies like dis today
Qawie Wilcher Was she really?
I doubt it. Black women are in crisis control mode because they're single rates are reaching critical levels. Furthermore if they make another movie like this then it will just blow out the notion that the war between black men and women is one-sided. It will be really bad news.
colbalt95 and who's fault is that?
motjon as individuals black men. As a collector black women. Just wait till the welfare Cuts happen we will see how strong and independent some of these single mothers are.
colbalt95 you sound deranged lol
Her pain in this scene is so raw it touches your soul.
She killed it 💀this scene just shows how good of an actress Angela Bassett is. Every movie she's ever played in she does a great job playing the characters Tina Turner, vampire in Brooklyn, American horror stories the list goes on she is an amazing actress
One of the most underappreciated actresses of our time. This scene resonates with me in so many ways.
Tyler Talks! I appreciate her
*underappreciated for our time*
What time do you come from where Angela Bassett was "underappreciated"? Hell, she was (and still is) the voice for ALL pissed off black females because of this scene alone...and she's underappreciated?
Agreed
With her interpreting Tina Turner and played other movies WHY HAVEN'T THIS WOMAN WON AN AWARD!!!!!!! She gives me chills and feel her when she's emotional. I love Angela Bassett she's the best actress in my eyes.
She's good I like her
Lily Lily the one that got paid was Terry McMillan she wrote the the movie 🎞📽🎬
Lily Lily hollywood like mediocrity
Lily Lily Glenn Close is another fantastic actress who hasn't won an Oscar yet. Everything has it's time.
Her and Leonardo DiCaprio act so much better than everyone else that no award IS an award
“I was your white woman for 11 years” We black men is a trip sometimes.
Child you look like you taking all the damn black men for yourself 😂😂😂 I smell sugar.
@@whitealliance9540 bless you, lmbo
@@WaffleHouse365 lmao i was just teasing! I freakin love this movie and you have a nice smile.
@@whitealliance9540 oh you're good, it was funny, wasn't offended at all, and thank you!
Meaning?
I just found out I was cheated on after 7 years together , my heart l/ world is completely shattered, and the first thing I could think of after I found was to watch this scene over and over and over again , thank you Angela
💔
How are you now? Just wondering
One of THE BEST scenes EVER! But they missed the best part, when she does the "fuck wit me" walk away from the burning car.
white liberals are always supportive of black people irrational behavior, its so entertaining specially when done by a crazy bitch.
Negative. I don't fully understand your message but it I'm assuming its of violent nature , bias, derogatory, homophobic or ineffectual. Since we are on a evaluation mood I would like to ask you a simple question. What prompted you to assume that my comment reflects my political views or identifies my sexual orientation ?
I'm confident that you dint have the faculty of reasoning, therefore you become defensive, you lose your temperament leading to a inordinate opinion illogical yet entertaining. You are a Proof that evolution can go in reverse.
Actually, she helped him build up his business from scratch. She wasn't really a housewife. She actually went to business school to acquire more knowledge for his own benefit, then he dumped her for a white woman.
itsjemmabond Exactly!!
James Raymond Yassssssss!!!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! She can fucking ACT!!! All I hear is her pain. She explained how selfish and upity her husband is for thinking "White is better" But the part about her kids though... tbh broke my heart. He passed that attitude to his kids. WRONG.
Thank you D clark. When she said that it really touched my heart we can't be the only two who feels that way? if so that's very sad!
That part killed me too...
Yes that was wrong on his part tears you up for him passing that mentality on.. and when she said " I was yo white woman for eleven years that hit hard A black woman scorn
FIRST of all, this was cut off WAY too early. That strut she does when she walks away from the car burning behind her is legendary!! And maybe it's just me, but does anyone else think that mask that fell behind her in the car, was symbolism for something? like John being a fool or something I don't know. I always notice that thing and I wonder if it could have been placed there on purpose.
Yup...that mask was definitely symbolism of Him being fake throughout the marriage!
Yes
Yes I peeped the mask too. I too think it’s some type of symbolism movies are full of them. Maybe it represents him wearing a different “mask” or face for all those years and yet it turns out he was a different person with a different agenda all the while.
No woman should ever have to experience this. Every woman deserves to be loved. Forever and always.
She deserved an Oscar for this role
Agreed 💯
She deserved an Oscar for nearly every film she's been in.
+Legion Ivory I agree she is a good darn actress
She OWED the last season of ER. She's stinking brilliant.
For Every Film She Has Ever Been In!!!!
This scene is classic. I went to see this on opening night in 1995. Even White women cheered Angela Bassett for burning her husband's stuff, as well as slapping that chick for stealing her man. The dichotomy between the film and reality.
LMAO. Wow!!! White women were cheering? Well I've never!!! LMAO
Joshua Goodlow my white mother loves this movie 😹😹😹 especially this part 😭😭
Joshua Goodlow this film crosses race and culture lines all women can relate on some level. This is exactly what I wanted to do to my ex after he cheated on me so many times and basically was too busy out and about to settle for family life with his daughter and I do I left best decision I ever did it’s taken all this time to get my life back. All the stress and pain I got an auto immune illness that was the cost
@@joshuaattractsmoney Why would that be a surprise to you. White people like this movie. Black women aren't the only ones who get cheated on.
queen of domination the night I went see it the black women were clapping you swore she won a academy award
What is this woman's secret?..... Angela Bassett looks the same in 2017 as she did in 1995!
Money and good genes!
It’s called Black Girl Magic and Black Don’t Crack. 💯
No drugs or alcohol can give a younger appearance too.
@@justacup8676 Hell I'm 42 and I wanna look like her.
No she doesnt. She looks good but not that good. You are over selling it...
This is hands down one of the most iconic and well played movie scenes in cinema history.
how can a great women like this not get an oscar!
spoder man *WOMAN. WOMEN- plural. More than one woman or in a group.
Especially after playing the queen in Black Panther 😃
She was nominated for an Oscar for What Loves Got to Do With It.......she won a Golden Globe for Black Panther and she also won a Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild and many other awards but give her time, I'm sure she will eventually win an Oscar there are many, many great actors Black and White who have not ever been nominated.
I know why not this movie?❤️❤️
She's seriously so damn beautiful
The music score in this scene perfectly captures her emotions. It’s melancholic.
What was the name of this music score for this scene it sounded sad and beautiful at the same time and can you put a link to the song score.
What’s the name of the movie score!?
I loveeee that Angela Bassett improvised this whole thing ! My jaw dropped when she told the interviewer on actors on actors that and I had to come back and watch and see if it was as good as I remembered
Yo hell knows no fury like a woman scorned....
💯💯💯
Whew Chile! It’ll knock the devils socks off! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Angela is so glorious when she's angry. I get chills every time I watch this scene.❤️❤️❤️
She is way overdue for a Oscar
Indeed
Or an Emmy at least . But when she stirred a reaction from moviegoers with this scene no awarded need.
I love that she improvised these lines and it came out beautifully
how many shoes this dude needs
Sita Rules17 LMAO! 💜😂
The funny thing is all of his shoes are exactly the same.
narcissist
Sita Rules17 His closet is bigger than my first APARTMENT!
When a man has more than three pairs of shoes, BEWARE!!!
;-p
Whitaker's direction is just brilliant on this monologue. The fact that the language is directed to someone in the room yet she is saying it on her own while ripping those clothes off those hangers is just unbelievable.
Yes in the book this is all interior narration and Bernadine is a much more timid reserved character. The fact that she makes it work saying everything out loud is nothing short of brilliant.
Angela Bassett never, NEVER disappoints. She is such a great actress.
There’s no Actress that can compare to Angela Bassett her work is phenomenal 👏🏾😍
Black men...this is how alot BLACK WOMEN really feel...WE need to Treat them as the Queens They are and stop selling out the race..im not not a woman but i felt this shit..MY mother went through the same thing
GOLD- FACE not our fault, not our problem. You seem to not understand the reality of second-wave feminism where women said that they didn't need men and then divorce an astronomical rates and raised the child by themselves through laws that actively discriminated against men, before then we had the highest family system.
GOLD- FACE today there are two million less African American men than women that means since women wanted to become a man's equal, they are going to have to become competitive if they want a Dependable man just like what men did when we treated them like Queens. Shit didn't just fall out of proportion for no reason. They asked for this
colbalt95 Who is they?? I didn't ask for anything. Stop categorizing.
@Cobalt95 thanks for telling the truth. Guys like Gold-Face always and i mean always ignore the truth in what you just said, either intentionally or on purpose. Well said Bro. Agreed!
Actually gold-face i could care less how they feel, not my problem. This is the bed they made by getting in bed with the white liberal feminist movement.
I didnt' understand this scene when i was young. now that I am in a relationship I do know what women go through a lot an still men underestimate us an don't appreciate us nor do they give us compliments
+Anthony L what the fuck does that have to do with anything? You're probably who she's talking about. Fuck boy.
jay bee
Shante Barze. i feel u on that ..
You're talking about chivalry. I seem to recall when women made a point in society that they were strong independent don'tneed no man, divorced in astronomical amounts and emasculated a Man by taking his kids and alimony that women do not appreciate men anymore.
Stop waiting for a man to compliment or appreciate you because they never will. Just go for yours like men go for theirs.
23 years later and this is still the best scene in ALL of movie history! I felt all of this - mad right along with her! Lol. I forgot she was acting!!!
She’s my favorite actress ICONIC as ever!! Oscars can suck it because she did THAT!! ❤️
I heard that she improved this whole scene 🔥
Not surprised in the least it was so raw and badass ! She’s such a queen 👑🙌🏼

I am going through the betrayal of my husband of 10 years abandoning me. He left and won’t come back. He can’t even look me in the eye. He refuses to see me. On top of that he is constantly cheating on me so I can divorce him. He literally schemed to get out of the marriage. He is not the same person I married and he is a complete stranger now. When I tell you the emotional trauma this man is putting me through I thank god everyday I have the emotional spiritual and physical support that is literally keeping me out of the looney house. I felt exactly how she felt in this scene even though I didn’t burn anything LOL. But I am starting to realize that I loved that man more than I loved God and myself and that was a problem. If he wants to destroy his life that’s on him. I have to be patient and let him reap what he is sowing. In the meantime I am maintaining but I honestly think I will have to attend therapy because this experience traumatized me. I know there are good men out there but going through this will cause you to doubt that. The pain of infidelity is so large. I also struggle with knowing this is not my fault. I also struggle with half of an income now. But I know that I will overpower this and see him leaving as a blessing. But because I invested so much time into the marriage it hurts!
This scene right here is peak cinema. How many years now and everytime I watch it I feel all the emotions all over again. Wow!
This scene is ICONIC 😭
Greatest scene ever.
Iconic!!!!
Waiting to Exhale, Tina Turner, Bosman and Lena, Malcolm X, etc, etc, where are her oscars??!!
