Bird (Nia Long) gets fed up when her husband dances with another woman on their wedding day.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This hit domestic comedy-drama concerned the fortunes of an extended African-American family recalled through the eyes of young narrator Ahmad (Brandon Hammond). Ahmad's world revolves around his grandmother, Big Mama Joseph (Irma P. Hall) and her three daughters: workaholic attorney Teri (Vanessa Williams), newlywed salon owner Bird (Nia Long), and Ahmad's housewife mom, Maxine (Vivica A. Fox). Each sister is in turmoil. Teri has lost patience for her husband Miles (Michael Beach), who wants to quit the law and take up music. Bird doesn't realize that her husband Lem (Mekhi Phifer) is about to be humiliated by her ex-boyfriend (Mel Jackson). And while Maxine's relationship with her husband Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams) is going well, her relationship with her jealous sister Teri needs fixing. These conflicts boil over at Big Mama's traditional Sunday dinners, where the matriarch plays peacemaker. The ritual faces extinction, however, when Big Mama suffers a stroke -- but Ahmad is waiting in the wings to take her place. Soul Food launched the directing career of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native George Tillman, Jr., who based the script on his own family experiences. In the summer of 2000, Soul Food was spun off into a cable TV series.

And this was just the beginning of the movie. What a brilliant way to start of a good film that was made on a budget of only 7.5 million! It's still classic Black American film, I wish folks would bring it up more. The film depended solely on performances, and BOY did the talent deliver!

Now that I look back at this movie Ahmad and Teri was the only ones with sense. Ahmad was trying to keep the family together right along with big momma before she died then he had to take on her job basically. Teri was basically a ATM like she said “Automatically Teri’s Money” and basically got betrayed by her sister and her cousin.
Lol after rewatching last night. Ahmad didn’t have sense either but he was a child so it makes sense. Cause why ru inviting the home wrecking cousin to Sunday dinner at the end of the movie.

Not gonna lie as a kid I thought they all were family in real life.
To be fair, Vanessa and Vivica look NOTHING alike. Vanessa is light skinned with blue eyes and Vivica is dark brown like a Snickers bar and has Brown eyes. Nia looks nothing like Vanessa either. To be honestly fair, Gina looks much more like Nia and Vivica than Vanessa looks to either of them. Realistically speaking, looks wise, Vanessa should have played the Cousin who Faith, Bird, and Maxine use for money. Lookswise, Maxine should have been the oldest, Faith the Middle, and Bird the youngest, and Teri a Cousin who is the responsible only child who is a Rich Lawyer.....

Yeah I had the same experience some years ago and it was tough on our family as well but the best thing you can do is just pray and try to remember the good times that you had with her and take advantage of the family get-togethers but let some time pass by and slowly over time you would notice your family trying to do little small things to get together and try to recreate the love that you guys had when your Big Mama was with guys on earth and probably the family will come back together because that's the way it was meant to be and that's the way your big mama will want it and the family will realize it.. don't get me wrong you guys will always miss her BUT it will get a little easier over time and you'll see parts of her inside of every single one of you, which will make you laugh, smile and cherish those moments! .. So pray because light will shine soon again on your family and she is looking down from heaven!😊.. you're also in my prayers it may God be with you and your family!🙏😊😊😊
