- Our Gen2 BRZ is back on the dyne and back to testing. Here we look at the performance of Equal Length (JDL, Tomei, ACE) headers compared to Unequal Length (Borla).
We also tackle the well documented issue of silicone in the oil pickup. We show you guys how to go about this job and install an oil pan baffle while "you're in there"

You guys seem to be the best and most honest team working on this platform. I'm surprised you don't get more followers. Please keep going. I love it.
Thank you, much appreciated!
Hell yes, a new BRZ video!!!
I feel so lucky to have found your channel. This is such premium content!! I’m blown away that you don’t have 20x more subscribers or even more. I know you’re gonna have a major come up any day.
Thank you for the kind words and very happy you’re enjoying the content!
Fantastic, honest video. Thank you.
would love to see the Borla UEL compared to JDL’s catted UEL
Thanks for sharing, lots of great info here.
Thank you love your content as well!
i ended up wit the JDL UEL with a DT E85 tune. i absolutely love it and i can feel the push in torque in the mid range. now this car absolutely loves running 3-6k
Just had a customer drop off an untuned car and was able to feel how the stock tune and motor pulled compared to ours. You can definitely notice a difference from tuning and headers even on pump gas.
The best, most honest, logically presented tuning facts I have ever seen presented on this platform. Outstanding job sir.
Thank you!
Good data
For the science!
I just did a skunk2 el alpha header on my first gen. I ceramic coated the header as well so i dont cook my oil. I also have a Motiv over pipe, fujitsubo dual resonated mid pipe and blitz nur spec v2 cat back. HAvnt gotten it dyno tuned yet have a appointment to do so in Nov. But there is a noticeable differences in the feel of the car with acceleration and the free revving nature of the car. I wish you were in salt lake city so I can come to you guys for my dyno tune!
Nice setup! We have tuned quite a few of these cars remotely and can definitely help you with a remote tune. Here’s the link. www.stratifiedauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=324_325&products_id=1087
Finally!!!!
I felt like this kind of video should have been done before, where a lot of popular headers are measured. Now we have an idea objectively how they perform.
I suspected the borla would do so well cause there’s a old forum post that compared it to the jdl uel and the borla did better at the low end. Most people denied the results causer the jdl had a oem cat back (which shouldn’t make much of a difference). Also because the borla built quality isn’t nearly as good. Would like to see a confirming graph though
Having said that I wish the JDL and Tomei UEL were also compared. EL aren’t interesting cause we all know Ace is king already
We gravitated towards the EL due to their performance on the Gen1 car. Would love to test a few other UEL headers to further firm up the understanding and conclusions here.
More to come on this car.
Thank you for the reply! Hope you get to do those two UEL headers. Also would like to see a gutted oem gen2 header. Lastly, I wonder if the second revision Borla uel with the slightly better quality would measure better
If ACE Is best why don't these guys test it??
I was wondering if the Tomei UEL header will provide similar torque gains as the Borla one, since the tubes seem thinner in Tomei.
Sounds like the perfect solution will be a JDL UEL. The EL design doesnt seem to be living up to the reputation of making more power. To top it off they have a WORSE torque dip. That is great news because UEL sounds so much better anyways. 😂
Also would be great to see a CATTED header for comparison. I actually have a catted JDL UEL, so I would love to see how something like that sizes up. I dont think the cat costs it much if anything.
The uel is also less expensive.
Look up sme equal length 4-2-1 header. Better than uel
@@Joshold Nah. Their advertising says so, but actual owners with real world dynos show it isnt any better.
@@boost331 have you seen the dyno video of them testing it? Racefix
Great video! Would love to see you guys test the HKS header and exhaust products. They look to good to be true so independent testing would amazing! Is there any HKS testing in the pipeline?
We’ve just dyno tuned a gen1 with the hks turbo kit. And it delivered. Video coming for that. It was a customer car.
The HKS exhaust is worth it just for the sound. Not quiet, but not obnoxious.
Damn, seems these borla uels are discontinued. Hopefully someone makes an equivalent soon.
It will be interesting to see how it compares to the de-cat version of the stock header as it’s already a slight UEL design with bigger piping diameter. Since the header is very close the oil pan, I quite like the heat shield came from the stock header and hoping de-cat stock header is the best choice for this mod.
Some thermal coating would definitely be a good idea.
@@stratifiedauto I had my tomei coated and wrapped in the gen1 86 but still see the oil temp running higher than gen2 with stock header at the track day. I believe you have tested the gen2 stock header flows better than gen1. Hence it leads me to think de-cat of gen2 stock header is as good as aftermarket header while maintaining the heat shield.
Did you tune for each header individually or use the same tune on all? It is well known headers like the ACE require vastly different AVCS tables.
Yes, each header was tuned for to optimize the output and reduce the torque dip.
Inductive Nut Buster was my nickname in culinary school
Sounds like a fun school!
Would love to see how the HKS headers would do.
Another header to try is the new (Off The Line) OTL equal length. What octane was used during the dyno runs? Are you guys going to experiment with a flex-fuel sensor and e-blend? Thx!
We have a video on that out already. This was 93 for consistency. Our local e9 93
The one that made 2hp more at peak then a tuned stock car lol
I'm curious if you'd get any top end gains switching to a 3" exhaust, I know on other 2.4Ls such as K24 or F22 see gains there. It's 20% larger volume wise after all.
There could be. I haven’t tested this change at this power level.
@@stratifiedauto HKS Hi Power 32016-BT003 is a great sounding affordable 3" option that doesn't drone and isn't overly loud other than cold start.
Hello and a wonderful day in BC. I go FA20DIT with 11k km yet I see some metal shading like glitters. Now my concern here what oil you will recommend or what oil do you used in your car? To avoid this metal shading please any thoughts..thank you in advance
I use high quality synthetic in OEM weight for street use and one step more viscous for track or hard driving.
Driven DI oils if you have the money otherwise Royal Purple. Ive tried many oils and I have not got anything better than these two. Id run 5w30/40 in a WRX
@@jakethesnake1503 DI means what ?sorry I’m slow In that. Rotella 6 was car and diesel truck in one..
Would be lovely if you can do a stock header + stock cat + aftermarket catback + K&N filter. in some countries (like mine), it is illegal to change the stock header and cat. yes life sucks. hahahahah
Did you perform any testing of the Greddy baffle after install?
Yes we have a video very close to release.
base on all these result, I'm assuming 2nd gen header is really well done compare to first gen. all you need to do is decat the stock header
If you could tell me which software you used to crack the ecu it would help a lot!!
We used ecutek to tune the BRZ
I'm sorry was the Christmas music playing while he was taking off the headers?
It’s like Christmas with so many headers 🎄
The east way to remove the RTV on the pan is to use a 3M Roloc white disc. I wouldn’t use it on the upper pan, but it chews right through the RTV on the pan. For the upper pan, it’s just miserable scraping like you did
Good tip!
What do you guys tune these cars with? Open flash or ECUtek?
Ecutek. The best stock ECU tuning suite for them.
@@stratifiedauto that is what I thought, do you guys offer remote tuning?
Where can I get a Borla UEL? also, are the ones that you are testing for the FA20 engine?
The one we are using here is discontinued.
@@stratifiedauto Do you want to sell it? I would be interested. That Borla was specifically for the FA20 or the FA24?
It was never made for the 2.4
Have you guys tuned the PLM header? I know they have a gen2 spec with larger primaries, and they are very cheap. Far from the quality of the headers tested here, but would be interesting to see how the budget option compares.
It’s hard to find a middle of the road header. That being said I am not sure if we will see anything breakout from what we’ve already seen. As we tune more of these gen2 cars we will keep growing the database.
PLM builds knock offs of other companies' products.
What is the acceleration times of these tuned vs stock?
Check out some of our other dyno videos as we show how much a 4th gear sweep is shortened once you have bolt ons and a tune.
Why is there no gasket available... I get that the RTV is used throughout the block but yea a gasket would resolve this issue. If there is one can some one let me know?
Manufacturers cut costs by not using them in areas you are unlikely to remove. In this case removing the oil pan has become a necessity in these cars due to the silicone clogging issue.
@@stratifiedauto Thank you for your information. Do you think it will be made by a third party in the future or it is just not possible?
The oil pan mating surface is not wide or flat enough. It would likely leak.
FA24 needs larger pipes than FA20. As we've seen countless times there's a 25% power increase and 20% capacity increase between the two engines. Using FA20 headers is essentially like putting LS2 headers on a LS7. We're the JDL headers designed specifically for the FA24? I'd expect 48mm (1 7/8") primaries.
Yes these were their 2.4l specific ones.
has any company developed an oil pan gasket for this car?
Not that I am aware of.
Those Borlas look like they'd leave a lot of space for a higher capacity oil pan. 🤔
how did teh JDL compare to stock?
Stock was before tuning. So we didn’t have an apples to apples.
@@stratifiedauto would like to see stock untuned vs JDL w tune though
I would be interested in the HKS equal length. They made the most power on the GEN 1. They also had minimal torque dip.
Did they make a gen2 version?
@@stratifiedauto GReddy or HKS if not both have recently come out with a gen 2 header. Seems HKS by the comments but there is a JDM gen 2 header on the market
What’s the I.D. of the pipe?
@@you_can_fuck_your_own_ass_69 that was the O.D. I’d imagine the I.D. is much closer once you take away the coating and possibly wall thickness.
If wasn't for this I would bet my life that uel would look bad next to el
We had different expectations as well. This is why we test and tune.
Wouldn't it be better just to get some cork sheet and make a proper gasket up instead of silicone?
The surface is not designed to hold a gasket like that and will likely leak.
Wire wheel will remove the silicone real quick
I wonder if Linus Tech Tips ever complains about the noise.
They bring us cars.
5 mm smaller is better for throttle response most headers and exhaust are too big
Please look into plastic razors, painful to see you scraping a surface with a normal razor
What about a 4 2 1 header
This is what these are.
@@stratifiedauto that UEL is 4-1 and EL is 4-2-1
Are we going to ignore the highly possible damage that UEL can cause to your engine?
Is there evidence of this happening and what would be damaged?
Stop saying BR"zed." You're not from New Zealand, it's so pretentious
He's from Canada and we also say Zed....
Easy to think the USA is the center of the universe when really it's the one that stands out from the norm.
We say BR Zed in Australia also. Must be a commonwealth nation thing with English.
who cares. everyone says GR 'eighty six' instead of the *proper* GR 'eight six' ... doesnt matter just let it go, you sound pretentious telling people what is proper or not.
@@yawny9710 isn't that what you're doing?
In Malaysia we say BRZed too
