  • Hey everyone, in this video I talk about one of my favorite series I have ever read. The Terra Ignota quartet by Ada Palmer.
Politics, Philosophy, History, Theology and Technology, this one has it all. If you are a fan of history and those big philosophical ideas this one's for you.
This is spoiler free and I try to highlight some of the world building that is ever present throughout this 4 book series.

Terra Ignota was the first sci-fi book series I ever enjoyed enough to re-read(I'm usually more on the fantasy side of things), and also the most complex books that I've enjoyed for now(I'm 20). I first read it last spring and now I'm on book 4 in my re-read.
It's not perfect, but it's super unique, ambitious, and talks about so many interesting ideas.
It's also surprisingly funny at times. For example, in book 4(sort of spoiler), when Romanova briefly restores communications with the rest of the world, the first person that they talk to is Felix Faust(one of the hive leaders). However, they only have the sound, not the video, so instead, it just shows the image that Faust chose for when he doesn't have the video(like you can do on Zoom). That image is a photo of him when he was 16. He's over 100 years old here. They should be having a serious conversation, but at first, they're all giggling because of that photo, which Faust neglected to change after decades, and it's unclear if he left it intentionally unchanged or not lol.

I had the amazing good fortune of coming across this series completely by accident. I went to the library looking for a specific other book, which turned out not to be on the shelf. I asked a library staff person for recommendations and they suggested "Too Like the Lightning." Blew my mind! It was much more challenging than anything I'd read in a long time, but I couldn't abandon it because I had to know what happened. Get to the end and find out it's the first in a series of four 😳 Now having read the whole series I'm about to start my re-read because, as you said, now I know who all the characters are so I have to go back and pick up everything I missed the first time through. So glad that library staff person put this in my hands!

I’m currently on my 3 reading of the entire series. If you haven’t read it at least twice, you really should. SO MUCH of the earlier books change in your perception after you learn about later events. It really is like reading entirely new books.

Perhaps the Stars is worth the effort. Absolutely thrilling read. I recommend the series to everyone. It does everything you could possibly want in scifi. Should've won best series, can't wait for her next.

I'm with you! I keep telling everyone to read this and I think only one person has taken me up on it. I know this is a bold statement...but I wouldn't be surprised it this gains and gains in reputation until it's considered one of the literary classics of our era.

@@michaelfschein2 It is odd to me how it hasn't blown up more. I get that it may not be for everyone but it is so damn good. I feel like on my 3rd or 4th reread of the series I'll finally absorb all of what it has to offer

@@bookmeridian I know. But it is dense. And it has gotten some attention. Wired loves it (that's where I read about it). This may be hyperbole but I think like Moby Dick or Ulysses, it's one of those works that will make its brilliance clear over time. And then we'll be able to tell people we recognized it first.

@@michaelfschein2 also I feel like out of all the speculative fiction / science fiction I have read about near or far futures, Palmers somehow feels the most plausible in a lot of aspects of the technology and a real "utopian" possibility

Nice to see a whole series overview of this. I've had Too Like the Lightning since it came out but have never gotten too it, probably intimidated by things I heard about the denseness. It had some buzz on SFF Booktube when it was coming out but the buzz didn't continue long after release. I did not even realize it was quartet, I thought it was a trilogy at most, that's how much I stopped hearing about it. This definitely makes me want to pull the first book off the shelf.

It is well worth it...I have been taking my time...it is like a rich and decadent dessert that I have to consume in small bites...and then take time to savor each bite!

The denseness isn't a chore, it's just endless fascination. Once you get a sort of handle on how to understand the world, you'll just want to know more and more.
