  • The Old Track in Mount Van Hoevenberg, outside of Lake Placid, NY was known throughout the bobsled and skeleton world cup circuit as the most dangerous and fearsome track in the world. The majority of the non US athletes to slide this track, posting a fast time was not the objective - their hopes were to survive the race, and come away without any major injuries. In the sport of skeleton, this track is legendary.

I lived in a Lake Placid for a year. Good friend of mine is a 2 time Olympic slider. Was in St. Moritz for the World cup race in '03 and Konigsee for the World Championships in '04. Been to a bunch of races in Lake Placid, old track and new track. Cheers!

Hello Chris Gorski!! I remember you. I dabbled in bobsled/skeleton and stayed at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid in 1993 - 94. That track was rough. My name is Scott Cochran.

these were taken from the 1992 Skeleton World Cup in Lake Placid. These guys were the best in the game at this time. The track was vicious if you did not understand how to drive it.

This is so cool! I always thought it would have been neat to slide the old track but the new Lake Placid track still isn’t known for being the smoothest ride in North America. I’ve seen plenty of people thrown off their sled at Shady II. Still a rough track.

Good stuff! I slid skeleton on this track from about 1994-1997. One of the first few women to try the sport. still have my helmet with the scars of finish curve on it! LOL

Had the good fortune to slide Hoevenberg in a 4-man bob back in the 70s! Zig-Zag was RIPPER! Bobsleigh is a definate life highlight. But if skeleton had been an Olympic sport back then I'd have been hooked.

I've slid on the track built next to this one and watching this gives me pain. those are some really hard hits, I'd say good portion of those are getting into concussion territory

    Thats funny,
The one with the green helmet at 1,08 thats me! Laughing with my icehockey protection..! First all the others had to laugh, but on the finish they were begging me to use the suit! Good memories!! Would'nt have missed it for the world!

He is calling out where the guy is on the track so when he crashes, the emergency people know which curve to send the ambulance to!

I can't comment on your drug use, but only one known fatality and it was a very freak accident (a bobsled was being unloaded and slid into the track in front of an oncoming skeleton sled). Lugers tend to take flight when they crash (like the one in Vancouver) which opens lots of ugly options. The people you see here had a lot of huge bruises and some minor breaks.

This is nothing you should have seen it before they shortned the track. I was a bobsledder and slid on the track 80-87. People would crash in turn two.
