    Saw him do this today while someone held up the whiteboard at a fundraiser for Senate race in NC. He then auctioned it off to my neighbor, signed it, and posed with her and the map while giving her a smooch. It was delightful.

    He used to have a televised version of his radio show on The Sundance Channel and the show opener was him drawing the map on clear glass. He's not tracing.

    The moment where I was really impressed was when Franken drew West Virginia. The easiest way to do that would be to draw the shapes of the states all around it; but Franken drew West Virginia first, without hesitation. He's got the cartographic knack.

    I notice that most folks who would attempt this can get their home state and its context pretty near perfect. Which he does. Every time he does this he gets the KY, VA, NC, TN area kind of out of whack, but other than that, I give it an A grade.

    @vulcanliner no, i read in national geographic that he does hav a method for it. their is a sort of trick to drawing it and it makes pretty easy to memorize the U.S. map. i even tried the trick and it's really not that hard!!! and how do u know he has it lightly traced out?

    I personally did not agree with Gore v. Bush. I believed this was a state issue and both Justice Souter and Justice Stevens agreed that a state court should of been allowed to decide this issue not the U.S. Supreme Court. The Rehnquist Court participated in the most judicial restraint of any court in the U.S. Supreme Court's history, except where exactly was that restraint in this case?

    Well I agree with that to a certain extent. My point was that in different countries, people learn about different things. All I was getting at is that in your country, knowing the boarders of your states is impressive, but for other countries, including mine, it is seen as rudimentary. In Canada, we have Social Studies, but in America, I think you would have history and Geography as two separate courses. Am I correct?

      I can. However, my news notoriety is long gone and yet his remains. I got national attention back in 2010 after I saw this video. I then called up my local news station and it went nationwide. I need to figure out how to get the original news cast on to utube. I drew all 50 states, their capitals, the largest cities, and state nicknames in 90 seconds.

    I wish I could draw. I have no problem roughly drawing the shape of each state and pin pointing where each capitol is in each state and locating each on a map, but drawing? tip of the chapeau, Senator.

    I think he did. He didn't draw its tip really close to the mitten of Michigan, but if you pause carefully at the close-up, you can see it sitting right there on top of Wisconsin.
    ...I stopped typing to watch it full-screen, and right after drawing Wisconsin & the UP, about 0:10 or 0:11 he turns to the audience to make a comment and then turns back to draw the line between the two.

    Before politics, Alf Franken was a comedian and satirist, so naturally, throughout his campaign and public speeches, he incorporates his skill of captivating the audience with a simple gag. It's a tool for capturing the interest and attention of his audience to deliver a message greater than just drawing a map. Basically just an icebreaker.
