For my voice, I tuned UP to FCF. No strings broke 🙂 Fits my voice and has a bit more volume.
What gauge strings and VSL?
This tuning is the same intervals as DAD but down a step so it's Ideal for Transposing.
Amazing info! I had figured out on my own that the fingerings were the same when I had re-tuned down when in the 1-5-8 tunings. The way you presented this information was easy to understand. I learned so much in just this one video.

Mine is tuned to C because I started on piano and it relates to all the white notes.
I also notice the 3rd is always on the string under the root (rapping back around to the melody string for the L-shape) so you can always find it that way and flatten or sharpen as required.

What a very helpful presentation, and well done!! Choosing your tuning is a big deal... and knowing what to learn when starting out, is something worth spending some time to consider, especially if singing is a major concern. In terms of what you want to do: Which tunings also resonate the best? Which tunings make playing chords with fingerstyle the easiest? with a pick, the easiest? Strumming the best sounding? Why learn something that you may want to unlearn later?...Your TIME, along with your Health.. are two precious resourcest best not wasted. For celtic aires.. DAD or DADGAD perhaps? but for lyrical song.. Open G, (TaroPatch) or C as above...? But what seems nice about DAD on three strings, is that it is easy to drop down to CGC,,, or just start at CGC which sounds richer, and capo up to DAD when needed.. really works. I just tuned my tenor guitar to G2 C3 G3 C4..which means I can learn a great deal from Bing Futch... and then have an extra low G2 string to take it to another level. I am also using a label making machine to make note markers on each fret as a learning aid. I make whole notes in one color, and half notes in gray., but all as dim as I can, so I have to "guess", but can easily check,.. to force myself to learn them and not just "read" them. Which means you can label your frets in any tuning that you want to.

Glad you enjoyed it! Also, along with the visual markers, listen for the intervals between notes and use them to guide you as well. Between the ear and the eye, you can really lock it in!

Do you have a Chord chart? It would be nice to "tune down" to CGC and strum along with someone playing guitar. Also what song book did you mention about CGC tuning ?
