This quest is absolutely maddening. One of the riddles asks you to go back to the area where you got your first seeker token. Imagine being 30 hours into the game and a NPC is asking you to remember where you first picked up a collectable. There's no cutscene or map marker. You just have to remember.

Yeah the way the scales darken her face when she goes for that creepy stare is so well done. Also, look at her pupils. They dilate as she relaxes again. Superbly animated.

The head tilt and dilating pupils are probably a reference to some birds especially parrots. Some species dilate their eyes very quickly and tilt their heads a lot at odd angles to look around. As disturbing as her expressions are they kinda remind me of pet parakeets I had as a kid. They tilt their heads and dilate their eyes like that a lot.
Exactly what I was thinking. For larger parrots like macaws or amazons that have been trained to speak I always notice a change in the size of the pupils when they say something.
Yea! It's called "eye pinning" and it's because the muscles controlling a bird's eye are striated and are voluntarily controlled, unlike mammal's smooth eye muscles. Birds use it as a form of nonverbal communication. Scientists still aren't sure if all birds can consciously control their pupils, but it reminds me of how humans move their eyebrows to convey emotions. You aren't really aware you're doing it, it's just a natural movement.
You know what? With all the feathers on her, the animators probably figured giving her more avian mannerisms would simultaneously make sense and feel somewhat uncanny since they involve a human face. Using parrot body language makes particular sense since they're rather clever, talkative birds.
That Sphinx got me thinking unwise.
Whoever designed this is a genius.

Other than the Finder's Token quest (which I fortunately still managed), I strongly agree. I had to look up a guide for three of these riddles, but I've never had such incredible highs from a game as the relief I felt from when I first gave her that vial and she started staring at me and questioning my choice, only to smile and congratulate me. Holy shit, the release of tension is so well designed. These riddles are ridiculously good, and that Sphinx is superbly animated and voice acted.
I believe daigo ikeno was her character designer, mans a living legend ☺️

my only nitpick on this otherwise flawless rendition of the sphinx, its that they either didnt bother, or more likely, didnt have time to do proper lip synch.
I've never played the game but I think it's supposed to be like that. Being able to talk without having your lips touch is quite unsettling

@kauaichan That was good as well but I liked the yeeting the guy off the cliff best because it was actually quite smart for the riddle, The sphinx didn't want a simple duel, yet who would want to fight someone using a ring which weakens you to the biggest extent possible. Solution? Don't fight. Just throw your opponent off the cliff and allow him to fight gravity. 🤯

15:12 you can actually bring the guy to the sphinx instead of taking the amphora to him, if you don't want to risk breaking it (Wilburgur did this in his recent DD II stream). Just gotta pick him up and either fast travel or go on foot back to her (and you can still carry him even if you choose to fast travel). He's got a slight bit of unique dialogue, being bewildered as to why you took him there, but then he'll see the amphora, thank you, and take it with him. It's a nice detail to that particular puzzle, kinda removes the challenge if you don't go on foot, but it's cool that the devs considered that as a way to solve it
The amphora also has the secret in how to defeat the Sphinx without resorting to the Arrow of Unmaking. Depicting weapons and wounds all across its body... except for the face.

I like that we have 2 choices, either let her go and she doesn't kill you but kills other adventurers who try the game of wits or that you can fight her. I'd honestly let her live because I befriend monsters more than humans lol
To be honest, i let her live because she offer's a choice, she don't make you do the riddles, she even said that fighting is no needed. And you know, we can kill her very easily, but the ting just melted my heart on the idea of a Cosmic being if knowledge and wisdom, I can't be the man who destroyed this, it's not right. I think is the only character that i really was worried about, and of course the main pawn

@@arthurratziel5851 We can't actually kill her. When we ''slay'' her, all she does is dissipate in golden light and congratulate you, saying she hopes you'll meet again. It was just another riddle to solve.
@@arthurratziel5851 you can't kill her. Her body isn't her real body. You find some scrolls and stuff detailing an old mage who cleared her riddles and then figured out that battling her was one too, as she never put anything to lose up and you risk everything to defeat an illusion.

She was the best match for the Arisen tbh. Both are divine beings, neither can die, and both are 500 IQ individuals whose brains are like grindstones for each other. Wilhemina is just a 304 and Ulrika is nice but she's not the Arisen's equal. Sphinx is love, Sphinx is life.

@@Jinnyfir This is a Greek Sphinx though, not an Egyptian one. The Egyptian one is either male or genderless, and has no wings. The Greek one is female and has wings.
@@TheStraightestWhitest okay that's fair, but that doesn't mean the designer didn't take liberties and pull from both mythologies. I mean, the Greek sphinx is supposed to have the wings of an eagle, but in DD2, the sphinx's wings are clearly inspired by a peacock, but eye feathers are technically on a peacock's tail, not it's wings.
You're not wrong about sphinxes, but that doesn't mean the designer was trying to be strict with the mythology either.
@@Jinnyfir They took some liberties, but that's local even to the myths themselves. In the original Greek tale, there's only one Sphinx. But some others simply made it a creature. The wings also vary similarly.

GOOD NEWS!! I couldn't remember where my first token was so I failed that, but I did the other 4 riddles and she ended up flying off... I jumped on her back and went to the new location and she lets tell her how many riddles you solved, I put 6 stone statue on the stump and she allowed me to do the other quests now without doing the first token quest

Despite pretending to be super sad about you attacking her, she actually likes it and views it as just another riddle. If you hit her chest area, she flies away. But if you hit only the backside, she'll remain in the fight and allow you to ''slay'' her. Eventually when you win, she just says ''That will do'', adopts a sexy pose, congratulates you for figuring out the final riddle and says she hopes you'll meet again since she can't recall being so entertained, and then disappears giving you the key and your exp/dcp. So don't worry. You're not really hurting her.

It IS NOT how many riddles you have solved, but how many riddles were possible to solve. I didn't get the "go to where you found the first seeker token" riddle, i couldnt remember. So I didnt count that one in the total. It was wrong, and the sphinx flew away. So riddles you may have got wrong still count as "riddles you've solved".
